Book Description
Drawing heavily on contributing cultural and ethnic factors, this book analyzes Miami's fiscal insolvency since 1996 and describes what led to the financial crisis, the explanations for the crisis, and the reasons for a slow recovery. Comparing Miami's insolvency with the earlier fiscal crises in Philadelphia, New York City, and Orange County, CA, the authors show the role of Miami's poor economic climate, the increasing ethnic influence, the emphasis on fiscal conservatism and a pay-as-you-go philosophy, the lack of standard and professional budgetary practices, and the corruption of several city officials. In conclusion, the authors consider Miami's outlook for the future. To fully understand Miami's original crisis and the extremely slow financial recovery, the authors believe it is necessary to explore how the dominant culture contributed to the city's financial problems. The authors show that structural features of the local government are less important than broader cultural and ethnic attitudes and practices.
Book Description
In this groundbreaking volume, Japan's most insightful contemporary labor analyst assesses the "light and shadow" of Japanese-style management, explaining why Japanese employees have stood apart from workers in other industrialized countries. Illustrating the intense combination of competition and community within Japanese workplaces, Kumazawa highlights dilemmas facing Japanese labor on the shop floor and in the labor movement. Highly critical of the hierarchical and undemocratic nature of Japanese industry, he offers a sympathetic view from the inside of the difficulties of surviving in the workplaces of contemporary Japan. Reviews and recollections of hundreds of '70s heavy metal bands are included in this reference guide to a decade of music.
Customer Reviews:
This is Very Good.........2007-03-02
And It's IN Stores I've seen..So..Why..The Price, is it NOT orderable? So Anyways..GOod..Mr. Popoff'S ( alistener..A scribe for a LONG time..)an honest Man..
Questionable inclusions and exclusions, too many holes.......2006-06-16
This is basically a cut and paste from his previous books, a Collectors Guide and Riffs Rule, which I prefer as they cover the artist's entire catalogue up until publication date.
I love his delightful descriptions, certainly not boring to read.
Please note, the man has no love for live albums, likes greatest hits, he loves punk ala the Stooges, but hates progressive metal like Hawkwind, Fates Warning, Rush, Queensyche etc.
His exclusion of bands then considered heavy metal like Wishbone Ash, Savoy Brown, Sensational Alex Harvey band etc are a major disappointment, especially when he includes other bands no longer considered metal like Mountain, or includes bands like Sonic Youth, which no one in the 1980's considered Heavy Metal.
Likewise, Progressive Rock was loved equally by heavy metal fans where bands like ELP, Jethro Tull and Yes were featured in other heavy metal reviews, but excluded here, yet he includes progressive rock bands like It Bites.
Similarly, southern rock ala Black Oak Arkansas and Lynyrd Skynrd were then considered metal, yet left out, but Blackfoot is left in.
You can't please everyone, but the questionable inclusions and exclusions and too many holes that don't justify such inclusions and exclusions result in a less than possitive review.
Martin Popoff, I love you........2006-02-16
Martin Popoff is the only kind of writer or reviewer worth a damn -- the kind with a writing style all his own, and opinions out the a$$. You will either love him or hate him, and I for one think he's one of the best descriptive writers ever produced by the human race. I read his reviews whenever I'm about to do some writing of my own, in the vain hope that he'll rub off on me. He knows more about metal than anyone else alive (although he certainly doesn't know everything about it) and has a distinct, historical authenticity backing up his choices of what's metal and not, and what's good or not, with a heavy dose of personal opinion of course. This is his best book, perhaps, because it's about the decade of his metal love genesis, the time period he knows the most. When you read this book (as you must if you care at all about metal), you will be full of adoration, fury, disgust, surprise, and above all curiosity about the tons of bands you never knew you needed to check out.
Four and a half stars really.......2005-11-26
For the aficionado of "traditional" heavy metal and heavy guitar driven music, (I never liked the term "hard rock") amongst whose number I am firmly ensconced, this book is a great read. The author rates a large number of albums from that much underrated decade, musically speaking, on two scales, heaviness, and personal taste. I don't necessarily agree with his rating of some albums on both counts, and given some obvious omissions, I struggle a little with inclusion of some bands. But that's the beauty of criticism, you won't always agree, but it gets you thinking. I must admit I took a punt on several albums I had never heard of before, based on the author's rating, and I have not been disappointed. I am still struggling with the absence of reviews of any Wishbone Ash albums. They rate a mention in one of the many indices, where the author sort of apologises for the absence of what were, and still are, one of the all time great guitar bands. But like I say, you are never going to agree with everything a critic says. All in all I highly recommend this book, which is the first of three enlarged volumes pulled from the original "Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal". The only question is, how much longer `til we see Volume 2, the 80's?
Sins of Omission.......2005-10-15
A nice idea, fairly well executed, but with inexcusable omissions. A book about 70s metal (or proto-metal) and no mention of Dark?! Perhaps even more conspicuous is the absence of any mention of Wishbone Ash, who pioneered the 'harmony guitar' style that Iron Maiden built a career on.
Also, there are bands on the accompanying CD that do not have entries in the actual book. Was this a mistake? And about the CD...why are there bands included on the CD that are given mediocre to poor ratings by Popoff in the book itself?
Book Description
** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED **
Taking an entertaining, intelligent look at the culturally influential 11-year television run of NYPD Blue, this examination includes a collection of essays on topics ranging from the series' portrayal of race relations in New York City to Sipowicz's famously thorny demeanor. A media critic, two police psychologists, and addiction, interrogation, and sex experts contribute essays that take an accessible, intelligent look at a show that has redefined the police drama genre. From insightful analysis of the show's evolution to lighthearted jabs at its quirks, this is a work that will deepen any fan's Blue experience.
Customer Reviews:
Not Enough Sipowicz.......2005-12-14
I was disappointed by this book. It was not what I thought it was going to be. I love NYPD Blue and I love Sipowicz. I think Sipowicz is the most interesting, complex, and real character on television. I found that many of the essays (the book is comprised of 16 essays on different themes in NYPD Blue) use Sipowicz and NYPD Blue merely as a launching pad to discuss more general topics. For example one chapter starts off discussing Sipowicz's interaction with AA, but then turns into an essay on AA, not on Sipowicz or NYPD Blue. There's not enough Sipowicz in this book for me.
This is awesome.......2005-05-14
Great book I love NYPD Blue and this is great with some good insight into the show. I love this and love Andy so you need to buy this now.

Customer Reviews:
run Snort on a linux machine.......2005-09-17
One would think sysadmins would not need a Dummies book on network protection. But apparently, some do appreciate a quick course, like that given here. It shows how Snort is available for all the main operating systems. Though the authors point out manifold advantages of running it under linux.
As in being able to reduce linux down to a minimal core system. This may be a significant consideration even if most of your machines are running Microsoft operating systems. Since your Snort machine needs to be as secure as possible. So throwing out optional linux packages reduces the risk of a serious bug in these compromising the machine. Plus, because you never know when your net might be attacked, Snort should run with as much uptime as possible. Routinely, linux boxes are capable of extended uptime. While in principle this is also true of Microsoft machines, in practice they tend to get rebooted far more often.
The book goes further into the actual usages of Snort. But you may want to consider the above as one of the best suggestions in the book.
Great way to get your feet wet........2004-10-18
If you want to get your feet wet or you've been tasked with deploying a snort system, this is a good way to start. In the typical, humorous, "for dummies" style, this book walks you through getting, setting up and using Snort and the ACID console.
The book also covers how to maintain and tweak the system, once it is up and running. A good effort by the authors.
Excellent Starter.......2004-08-25
This is a great book for getting startet on snort. I've used other NIDS, but never braved downloading Snort ofr Windows. This book not only provided very detailed step-by-step instructions it also detailed some very useful tools. I really like that its not OS-centric. And Snort's Great!

The hobo philosopher.......2007-09-05
After reading both of Mr. Pool's books on this subject, I felt that these books should be required reading for every World War II veteran - possibly all veterans. And now I would expand that recommendation to all who have ever fought in any war and to those who may be forced to do so in the future.
Reading such books will help to get through a lot of the "who harr" and hoopla of what most everybody "thinks" war is all about. "Where's the Money and Follow the Money" are always good questions - and invariably eye-opening.
Conclusions:
Fear of Communism or anti-Communism was the chief motivational concept behind the rise of Nazism and Adolf Hitler. From the man in the street to the captains of industry and the nobles and aristocrats the hatred, fear, and spirit of anti-Communism was common.
Patriotism and nationalism were the second strongest motivational characteristics of Hitler contributors inside Germany.
Industrialists, aristocrats, white Russian refugees and wealthy advocates of the capitalist system all around the world found cause in Hitler's anti-Communism.
The secret Thule Society is for me a new discovery. I had never before read of this group.
The Aryan and the anti-Jewish attitudes seem to be a whole other study. This book would suggest to me that anti-Communism was a bigger motivation for the monetary support of Nazism or Hitlerism.
prejudice.......2003-12-30
The book obviously is written from the point of view that Jews were not to blame for anything.
A significant part of the book is dedicated to Henry Ford Sr.'s warnings about the jewishation of the USA.
I've read Ford's book, a summary of his articles.
The book does not incite against Jews, it just explains increasing Jewish influence in the USA since 1880.
A book as `From prejudice to destruction', Jacob Katz, 1980, Cambridge MA (Katz is an Israeli lecturer), explains why Jews after they had become full citizens in Germany, and even after they no longer were religious, still remained Jews, a distinct social group.
`Christianity and the Holocaust of the Hungarian Jewry', Moshe Y Herclz, 1993 New York University press, describes how in Hungary Jews monopolised the press.
David Sinclair, `Hall of Mirrors', London, 2001 describes how Roosevelt's behavior in 1918 Versailles was influenced by New York bankers, who needed German reparations payments to France and Britain, so that these countries could pay back the WW I loans.
Last but not least, the Malaysian president in his statement to the conference of the Arab League a few months ago said about the same as Henry Ford Sr. published: 'Jews rule the world, by proxy'.
But with the obvious pro Jewish prejudice in mind it's not a bad book; that Hitler was in close contact with Ford can be read in: `Rudolf Hess, Briefe 1908-1933, Herausgegeben von Wolf Rüdiger Hess, Einführung und Kommentaren von Dirk Bavendamm, München 1987.
Several letters to and from Ford are mentioned, also about matters that needed personal contact.
An untruthful and unscholarly book.......2002-09-18
This book was comprised mainly from speculation and from rumors without true evidence to support the claims that were made. The author has admitted to not researching nor fully reviewing the sources and archives listed in his works cited. If you want to read a truthful, honarable scholarly work pertaining to the subject of Hitler and his financiers (or lack there of), you should take you time and read Henry Ashby Turner's "German Big Business and The Rise of Hitler." Don' waste your time on this "get rich quick" book.
Revealing work........2002-08-29
Pool is able to give us a compelling report about who really financed the Nazi-party and why Hitler had friends in high places, and that despite the fact that many first hand historical documents disappeared.
First, there was the fear for communism (Fritz Thyssen, Henri Deterding of Royal Dutch, Norman Montagu of the Bank of England ...). These people supported Hitler's party to win the working class and the ruined lower middle class away from communism.
Secondly, his anti-semitism (Henry Ford). Third, his racist/nationalist stance (the secret Thule society: a group of lawyers, judges, professors, policemen, aristocrats, scientists and businessmen). Fourth, friendly régimes (Mussolini).
And last but not least, the donations of his party members and his daily newspaper (a milk cow).
Pool gives us a penetrating picture of the political/economical situation in Germany after the First World War: the unbearable Versailles Treaty, the poverty, the unemployment, the hopeless division of the political parties and the plotting of von Papen and his backers, who supported Hitler when his party was losing support, for fear that his followers would jump over to the communists. Von Papen thought that after the elections, he would easily get rid of Hitler, a terrible mistake.
Pool convinced me of the ease with which money can subvert the democratic process.
One of the more controversial statements in this book is the reason of the abdication of King Edward VIII of England: not because of Mrs. Simpson, but because of his pro-Nazi attitude. This statement needed more underpinning.
A must-read for anyone interested in Nazi history........2002-02-17
Who Financed Hitler is well written and interesting to read. It brings out many facts not normally found in books about Hitler and Nazism. For instance, it explains that the Reichstag fire led to the passing of the Enabling Act which made Hitler a dictator.
Hitler blamed the fire on a plot by communists and had all 100 communist members of the Reichstag arrested. While they were in jail he had the Enabling Act passed by the Reichstag, which met elsewhere because of the damage to the Reichstag building. Without the 100 communist members present, Hitler had enough votes to get the Enabling Act passed.
Most texts on Nazism mention the Reichstag fire, and either leave it at that or just mention that the communist members of the Reichstag were arrested. They do not point out that with the communist members in jail, Hitler had enough votes to have the Enabling Act passed.
The book brings out many other facts about Hitler and Nazism that I have not seen elsewhere. The author, James Pool, is to be congratulated for doing much original research on the Nazi era.

Brings to life the human and creative nature of scientific discovery to the nonscientist.
Customer Reviews:
Great description of the scientist, his work and his world.......1998-10-01
The author follows the work of Anna, an immunologist. For those who like science, this will be a great opportunity for a view from whithin. Aside from the thrill of following scientific research in its evolution, the reader is exposed to the life of Anna, and gets to know something of her rich emotional life, and her great imagination, love for life and her dedication to her work. The strive to discover and break through new frontiers goes both externally, in seek of the mechanisms of the body, and internally, in search for the motivation to carry on despite the hardships. Im short, I loved it.
