Blows the Lid Off of Certain Economic Fantasies.......2005-01-18

Ever wonder just how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? Well, Susan George goes the distance in explaining both the how and the why of this phenomenon, on a global context. Her book, A Fate Worse Than Debt, outlines just how a few select countries continue to accrue wealth, while a vast majority sink deeper into the abyss of poverty and insecurity.

Ms. George sees debt as the great, unsung cause of increased hunger, a lack of food security, and a generally deepening level of misery for the vast majority of the world's population. She approaches the topic from the standpoints of food security, economic development, and equity. All three, she has found, have a common cause: crushing debt burdens imposed by rich country donor elites and their rich counterpart recipients in the poor countries. She sums up the situation best by saying, "The elites, either out of stupidity, cupidity, or lack of foresight, racked up debt, and when they could not pay, transferred the burden to the larger nation." Though she goes to great lengths to distance herself from the 'vast conspiracy theory of history', what she documents throughout the book amounts to a veritable conspiracy of criminal proportions. In her defense, every single assertion she makes about how the economic (mal)development assistance programs worked back then, as they still do now, were later fully corroborated by an entrenched member of the economic development establishmment in his memorable book, Confessions of an Economic Hitman.

Ms. George explains the problems in very clear, common-sense terms using the then available information. Since then, the problem has gotten much worse, however, but the debtor nations are making payments on their debt. The truly shocking thing was to learn the true nature of this debt- almost all of the nations involved went into debt in an attempt to finance prestige projects, ape the West through misguided modernization schemes, or to purchase things they did not really need, meanwhile very basic needs such as for infrastructure, health and education (those things that really would have helped the poor) went unheeded.

While there is little historical depth to the book (again, her attempt to distance herself from the Vast Conspiracy Theory of History), she does present example after example of how official development assistance hurts the people all involved say they are trying to help. As such, it does much to dispel the prevailing notion that many in the Third World are simply do-nothing deadbeats looking for a handout to squander. Instead, many hardworking people in these countries have found it harder to make ends meet because they are burdened with the consequences of someone else's stupidity- they literally pay for the idiotic ideas that their leaders put into motion.

In the end, the issues she presents boils down to a question of priorities and self-interest. The needs and wants of a rich and elite minority (often educated abroad and having sizable assets in other countries) in-country take precedence over the very real day to day needs of the poor majority. While investments in economic growth uniformly benefit this minority and the foreign investment community, economic development could (and indeed would) benefit everyone, rich and poor alike, by setting the stage for continued, sustained growth. In the two decades or so that this book has been around, we have seen the consequences of such destructive self-interest. In Brazil, for example, you have a rich and isolated minority living in fear of poor hordes pressing upon their gated, high security communities (or is this the USA!?!). Everywhere one looks, we now have a polarized world rife with conflict, but as long as debt gets serviced, no matter how crushing the burden on the average citizen, no intervention (economic or military) is required. Perhaps it is time that all of us thought about a more enlightened self-interest, one that would avert total disaster- aka The Economic Apocalypse, as opposed to managing small (but increasingly more frequent) economic disasters here and there.

Anyone looking to understand some of the economic reasons for the failure of official development assistance to the Third World must read this book first. The book also contains a list of highly informative source materials, though somewhat dated, for further reading. In sum, this book does much to release some of the hot air surrounding techno-economic fixes to many of the problems in the world. We really can't rely on technological quick fixes or economic palliatives to bring relief to much of the suffering humanity when self-interest works counter to these measures.

What Price is Peace?.......2001-11-15

I agree 100% with the previous reviewer, about this book changing your life. This book, along with others like 'Man Made Famine' show the truth is worse than fiction. And pseudo liberals like Sting with their cheesy 'sponsor a child' stuff is NO GOOD.Makes us first world feels less guilty about the 'third world' (which means, the overexploited Non white world). And this books goes real deep, with the facts and quotes (from Banks, Multinations the power brokers) and leaves us with the question. What Price for Peace, am I prepared to allow say, Ghana develop it's Gold and Diamond mines knowing that if it does it put my Middle Class standard of living at risk? Really what is the price of peace.

There are not many books for chromatic harmonica so I was pleased to find this intro. It covers music notation and has well paced exercises even for those who already know how to read music. I did not give it 5 stars because I think it could have benefitted from having more well known tunes to practice besides the music drills. I am sorry I did not know there was the possibility of purchasing the version with a CD.

I wasn't expecting much for only $5.95. However, I was blown away at the quality of just the CD alone. It contains 27 songs with soft acoustic guitar accompaniment to Phil's clear harmonica playing. He does not blow you away by showing off his harmonica skills. It is a pleasant CD to just listen to if you like the sound of the harmonica. It is easy to pick up your own chromatic harmonica in the key of C and play along with him. Each song is repeated three times so it gives you a good chance to practice the song. By the end of the third time through you are getting the hang of it.

I would have paid $15 just to get the CD. The book includes all 27 songs with the harmonica tabs. This is a great package for anyone wanting to move up to the chromatic harmonica.

This is an excellent and affordable introduction to the chromatic harmonica for all players, whether on a tight budget or not. The book offers a nice overview of music theory in general while presenting the fundamentals of harmonica technique in a clear and practical manner. Inclusion of a CD makes the package a truly remarkable deal and speeds up the learning curve tremendously. Of course, there are books that go into greater depth, but this is a winner for beginning players.

Effective to learn TCP/IP programming best practices.......2007-08-14

Not all of the 44 tips are exceptional. Some of them are pretty trivial such as "Read Stevens books" or "consult RFCs" but about 35 tips are very good. The author knows well this topic and explains very well the reasons behind these tips. I am sure that all these good tips can be found in the TCP/IP Illustrated books but if you do not have the time to read 3 volumes consisting of about 2000 pages, this less than 300 pages book will provide a nice synthesis of TCP/IP programming good practices.

excellent for developing network programs.......2006-08-16

I bought this about 4 years ago. It was extremely helpful for the socket programs that I have had to develop. I don't do TCP/IP socket programming full time, but this helped me to develop several robust applications. I used it to develop a BGP peering monitor application as a server that also uses sockets for remote reporting. I also used it in developing an active network probing application that looks for forwarding plane faults, making use of various active sending and recieving sockets: UDP, raw and ICMP.

entry-level textbook disguised as "tips".......2006-07-21

I don't know why this book is rated so highly. There's nothing wrong with the content (what little there is), but I feel that it's misrepresented as a book for intermediate level network programmers. I was expecting discussion on when to use select() vs. multi-threaded vs. single-threaded servers, for example. But this book is more for beginners (Tip #1, "Understand the difference between connectionless and connection-oriented protocols").

I also feel that the title is misleading. I was expecting a book of specific tips on par with Scott Meyers' Effective C++/STL series which are vastly superior references on their own topics).

It's decent as a textbook, once you realize that's what this is. But it's still pretty shallow, and definitely not worth the high price tag.

Perfect reference for network programmers.......2006-03-01

This book is a perfect addition to the library of any network programmer. It brings the balance between practicality and knowledge to a topic as TCP/IP Programming. If you want more knowledge go with Stevens, but if you want to learn fast or to review some concepts or even have a reference book, this is your book.

If want to do network programming without getting too deeply into every network programming concept, this book will show you how to code simple and fast with very good reference examples. It will also give you tips that will help you to avoid network programming mistakes that can lead to network buffer overflows.

This book has a perfect balance of brevity and depth. Anything shorter would have been superficial, anything deeper would begin to compete with Stevens' Unix Network Programming (and lose). As is, this book fits very well for developers who do occasional TCP/IP development, but still need to develop reliable, industrial-grade software.

Engaging and entertaining.......2005-08-10

A fascinating insight into the mind and career of the world's biggest movie star. With exhaustive (and exhausting!) descriptions of Jackie's brutal Peking opera training and early days as a stuntman and actor, almost everything you want to know about Jackie is here.

Not that there aren't omissions - his illegitimate son Jaycee, now trying to make a name for himself as an actor, is never mentioned. Jackie is also quick to take credit (he claims 'Half a Loaf of Kung Fu' and 'Snake in the Eagle's Shadow' were the first kung fu comedies, which they weren't) and slow to give it out (he describes his opera brothers' film 'The Prodigal Son,' arguably the best kung fu movie ever made, as "solid"). But Jackie's charisma and determination shine through on every page, and you can't help but admire the guy. A must read for Jackie fans and aficionados of Hong Kong cinema.

Is there a better man living?.......2005-02-07

Dood tottally I'm not kidding, Jackie Chan is like a god amongst men, a god who makes flawed movies in his old age (flawed is polite considering the horrible movies he's currently putting out). Man Jackie Chan is so great it makes my balls sweat whenever I think about it, in this book he talks about how he and his crew broke into an amusement park to steal... not money but bread crumbs!!! Becuase Master wanted his students to work hard, this is not a book for weaklings, they will fret and feel weak as they learn of the heroic and disciplined exploits of my man JACKIE FING CHAN! Man in this book he talks about how some dudes wanted to fight, but he didn't cuase Master taught him only to fight for show and not fight for violence. Man the world would be a better place if we all had to read this book. Mandatory reading for High Schools this should be.

Jackie Chan Rocks My Socks.......2005-02-01

Jackie Chan has had a very eventful life. When he was a child he lived in on an ambassadors mansion in Hong Kong. Soon he was sent to a Cantonese Opera school, which was a boarding school where he was trained, day and night for over 10 years of his young life, in the ways of Chinese Opera. Chinese Opera is not the same Opera you and I may think of it as, but instead is a very acrobatic physically demanding show. He then went into the stuntman business, which was a very difficult road for him. For many years he struggled with finding work but he soon became a much wanted stuntman. Eventually he went into small acting parts, which led to bigger acting parts. Soon enough he was a huge success in Hong Kong, and eventually got married to a famous Chinese actress. Jackie still travels a lot and his wife is a stay at home wife who raises his son.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading. It is full of constant action and keeps your attention. I Am Jackie Chan is an easy read and fast paced I was unable to put it down, except of course when class was over.

True insight into Jackie Chan's world........2005-01-08

If you are a Jackie fan, you definitely owe it to yourself to read this book. Straight from the source, honest and at times brutal, Jackie's autobiography will give you great insight into his life and his long struggle to become one of the greatest stars in the world. It is a fascinating look into a culture and world that may be very alien to some readers, and provides interesting insight into the development of martial arts cinema in Hong Kong, the rough life and work of its stars (and stunt performers), and of course Jackie himself. You'll see, through his eyes and his words, why he has pushed himself so hard and continues to do so.

He is honest in his opinions and you may find yourself not always pleased or in agreement with his view on things, but he owns up to many of the mistakes he's made in his life and you have to respect him for that honesty.

Read, enjoy, and learn to appreciate Jackie Chan on an entirely new level.

Natalie is a Poet's Poet.......2005-01-10

Natalie Goldberg is an artist, teacher and Poet. I knew about the first two from her books on writing and her book of paintings; However, I was thrilled to find that she is also a Poet. In my opinion, she is mostly a Poet. I read her novel, "Banana Rose," and a novelist she is not. However, her poetry sings. I say this because there are lines that can stand alone with their beauty:
"aspen leaf quaking in the quiet of the world..."
"the cold the lonely face of yearning/and spring broken through the bounty of wingless trees"
"and the dark bounty of coal about to burst into diamonds"
For these three lines alone (from 3 separate poems), this book is worth its weight in gold. The paintings in the book are pure New Mexico, and if you like Southwest art, you will enjoy them. They add to the beauty of the book. I would highly recommend this book to any poetry lover; and I'd highly recommend Natalie publish more poetry.

Terribly Disappointed.......2003-08-13

I've read and loved all of Ms. Goldberg's books, but this one was a huge disappointment. I've never read such rotten poetry, I'm very sad to say. The art work was good, but childish. This book has nothing in common with the glowing editorial review here at Amazon. I would never have purchased this book if I'd looked it over in a book store. If you want a good book by Ms. Goldberg, buy "Wild Mind" or "Writing Down the Bones".

This is an awesome book and i highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know what it's like to be chronicaly ill.

This is an engaging, lucid story by an intelligent man with heart and honesty ... not to mention a mischievous twinkle in his eye! While most of us have not suffered the wrenching health challenges the author recounts, this book is a good companion to anyone who is looking for friendship and encouragement on a hard journey. Certainly, care givers and family should give this book to those who want to know they are not alone in the face of cystic fibrosis, cancer, depression, or other hardships. Charlie knows the icy stare of mortality. And like a hockey ruffian, gives it a full-body check and goes out for beers afterward. Way to go, Charlie!

I was delightfully surprised at the effect this book had on me. I couldn't seem to put it down! I've had a rough time in the past 3-4 years but the ambition displayed in the book showed how differently one can perceive their troubles and turn them into triumph. I admired this portrayal of strength and tenacity.

Wonderful account of a man with great courage........2000-10-09

Overcoming greats odds, the author elequently tells the story of his fight against Cystic Fibrosis that ultimately leads to a double lung transplant.

Mr. Tolchin recounts the trials of growing up with CF and all the procedures, medical problems and hospital stays that he encountered. His tale includes all the medical staff and friends that support him during his journey and the importance humanity and human contact has to medical science.

His story is one of triumph, and displays how important family and friends are to overcoming difficult situations. Charlie's not the only hero in this book. He is quick to point out all the people who inspired him along the way. It is here where the books succeeds and inspires. The team effort is unbelievable.

Great reference for lungs, this is a wonderful factual book about lungs.
Anytime you need to learn breathing, look for it. In the My Body series, they have some 3-d pictures, a gollsery, information about a part of you, and more!
