Book Description
A behind-the-scenes look at people who make presidents talk.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting if a little overblown.......2000-05-04
"James Humes is over the top!" exclaims the introdcution (written by Humes pal and British MP Jonathon Aiken). Indeed he is. This book reflects that sentiment in both the positive and negative aspects, though on balance it is highly entertaining. Humes has many good stories to tell and tells them well. He does, however, give off the feel that there might be SOME exaggeration going on. Still, the book is quick and enjoyable to read.
Interesting memoirs........1997-06-24
The author, "lawyer, legislator, diplomat, author,
historian, actor, professor, and White House
speechwriter", recipient of the Order of the
British Empire and dance-partner with Queen
Elizabeth, seems to have been everywhere and met
everyone, most notably the several U.S. Presidents for who whom
he wrote speeches.
Humes' chatty narrative style, marred only by a
few regrettable typos, painlessly shares some
remarkable insights into high politics and
diplomacy, with such highlights as; Nixon's
candidate for "Deep Throat", and the real reason
Ford pardoned Nixon.
Not incidentally, Humes is today a professional
speaker whose tips on public speaking would be
well worth the price of admission here to anyone
who speaks publicly.
Very entertaining.

Book Description
A sensitive, startling portrait of the legendary singer-timed to hit stores just as the Kevin Spacey movie Beyond the Sea has kindled intense new interest in every aspect of Darin's life and tragically early death.By age 8 Bobby Darin knew he was doomed to die young. So he set out to become a showbiz legend by age 25. From his Grammy-winning smash hit "Mack the Knife" to his Oscar-nominated supporting role in Captain Newman, M.D., Darin left his mark on every aspect of show business that he touched. Now, 32 years after his death at age 37, we finally have an elegantly written, multilayered portrait of this brash, gifted artist. Author David Evanier has:o Interviewed all the key principals in the Darin saga and culled rare photographs from the singer's closest friendso Pored through scores of videotapes, audiotapes, recordings, documents, and filmso Re-created the rock-and-roll and Broadway showbusiness milieus of the 1950s that Darin emerged from, and the sharply changing musical, political, and cultural world of the 1960s that had such a profound impact on him.The result is a moving, insightful portrait of one of the greatest-and most complex-performers in the history of American entertainment, whose restless voice and spirit seem as alive today as ever.
Customer Reviews:
More like Roman Meal..................................................2007-09-17
This book was a difficult read because it was poorly written and edited. Bobby Darin was presented, and it may be a true picture, as a complete narcissist. Everything was about him, similar to the antics of many teens today. Unfortunately Darin was unable to grow out of it. Anyway, I would pick another of the several books available on Bobby Darin's life were I given the choice anew. This one was just plain disappointing.
Great Title.......2007-09-16
I have read all the available books and this one brought both my husband and self to tears at the end. A must for Darin Fans knowing none of us are perfect human beings, I pray for his soul every day.
Great read.......2006-07-13
To Lois Lane, et. all:
How would you have written this biography, sans the quotes from the people who knew him best? The form inherently lends itself to this technique, as any journalist will assure you.
The comparison between Evanier and McCullough is irrelevant. They are two completely different animals.
Glad I didn't take your misguided attempt at egalitarianism for gospel. I would've missed a great book, one I highly recommend to other Darin fans.
The Candle Burns At Both Ends.......2006-07-09
David Evanier's biography of Bobby Darin has many interesting sequences, telling of the singer/actor's struggle from the sidewalks of the Bronx to the big time in Hollywood. The heart condition that threatened to take his life before he reached thirty, propelled him to set out and achieve as much as he could in the limited time he had on earth, as well as the tortured, volatile relationship with his family, which is enough to move one to tears. Glowing reminices from friends elevates this biography. Despite his success, he never felt it was enough - he was constantly searching for other outlets through music, acting and politics.
But there are some negative aspects - namely, the writer's
description of Sandra Dee. He seems to paint her in a less that flattering light as a mentally disturbed, alcoholic starlet without any redeeming virtues or talent. As she was sexually abused as a child and prevented from having a normal childhood thanks to her controlling stage mother, she could hardly be expected to live a carefree, ideal life, much less while married to Darin. Evanier also downplays the intense love they shared, and doesn't seem to make any connection of the disentagration of the marriage to Darin's infedelities, grueling schedules that took him away from home from long periods of time, and Bobby's own demons, causing him to be restless and sometimes cruel. The blame falls on Dee, since she was suffering from alcoholism, anorexia, as well as a series of miscarriages, and as she was in very poor health in her last years, it seemed to have made her an ideal scapegoat. Very few people speak favorably about her, with the exception of the one person whom some would have thought would have slammed her - Bobby's close friend Steve Blauner. Although an arguement between Steve and Sandra is described, he rarely puts her down and shows some compassionate understanding. Dee sadly died not long after the book was published (she and son Dodd Darin did not particpate in it), and Blauner again spoke of her in very glowing terms. Also, the book erronously states her second film, "The Restless Years" as her debut, and of course, there is the annoying mistake of the reference to Bridget, rather than "Gidget" (attention, editing!). And there is a debate over Sandra's actual birthdate - was she 16 or 18 when she married Bobby?
Andrea Yeager, who would become Darin's second wife for a few brief months in 1973, is made out to be some kind of a flawless saint, when in fact, as soon as they got married, their relationship, which had been almost ideal, began to deteriorate. It also omits the fact that Bobby was in fact, unfaithful to her as well, getting Sandra pregnant again (resulting in her final miscarriage).
Bobby Darin wasn't perfect. Because of his medical condition, the painful revelation that the woman that he thought was his sister was actually his mother, and his own ruthless ambition, he could seem to be cold and cruel to those close to him - his family was often at the receiving end of that. But his touching love for his son Dodd, his passionate support of the Civil Rights movement, his devotion to his friends and the women that he loved and lost, not just his wives but also Connie Francis, and his unstoppable drive and talent endears him to our hearts. His indelible spirit and contributions to the world of music and film will never die, and will endure forever.
One of the more colorful Darin bios.......2006-01-06
I think this is one of the less dry more colorful Darin bios. The condom revelation alone would qualify it as colorful. Weird stuff...but in conjunction with other info available about Darin, and available Darin recordings, the assertion is credible. Incredible yet credible.
I really appreciate the fact that, unlike some other Darin Bios, it's not just a boring list of dates and events.
It relies a lot on interviews with devoted Darin boosters like Blauner and Wasser, but I love them for loving Darin and would welcome their input in any Darin bio.
Oh, and in response to an earlier reviewer who was sceptical; Sandra Dee was indeed just 16 when she married Darin. This bizarre fact is confirmed in son Dodd Darin's book "Dream Lovers."

"forgotton " king of comedy.......2005-10-02
As a child I watched Car 54 Where Are You ?, and then in later years I watched The Phil Silvers Show ( Sgt Bilko ) on the BBC - which they repeat regularly to this day. Perhaps one day they will show Car 54 again ?
It was strange to realise only recently ,that one man, Nat Hiken ,was responsible for both shows.
This excellent biography tells the story of how these shows came to be, and is a fascinating glimpse into the early days of TV. David Everitt gives great discriptions of the behind the scenes dramas, as well as analysing in an acessable way just why Hiken's work has stood the test of time.
If it is true that his work has largely been forgotton in America, then that is very sad. I notice that car 54 was released on video some years ago, and there is no authorised Bilko DVD . Shameful .
His attention to detail, and striving for perfection, created some outstanding comedy. However this was not without taking a toll on his health.
His premeture death, left us all the poorer.
I can't help but wonder what he would have made of today's sit-coms. All in all a great read .
Correction to Below.......2005-06-05
While I can sympathize with not buying a book if you believe it is sloppily written, jacket copy isn't written by the author but by some copy writer at the publishing company. It shouldn't have gone out like that (why didn't spellcheck catch it? probably it was written in the layout program and not the word processing one), but neither the author nor the editor are on the hook for this one.
A TV LEGEND and GREAT book!.......2003-08-24
THANKS so much to the Author for doing a book on one of the GREATEST people to grace the TELEVISION Screen! CAR 54, Where Are You? Is one of the BEST written and Expertly crafted TV Sitcoms to ever make it to the screen. I really feel sorry for people who have time to proof read sample pages on the internet and criticize mis-spelled words? From a GREAT book! Buy it!
You might want to rethink this Sample business........2001-12-27
This is more a review of the sample presentation on this page, since it is supposed to entice the reader into buying the book. I'm a person who was looking forward to buying the book and now I have my doubts.
Books cost a lot of money. While I'll put up with the sloppy grammar and spelling which are the spice of life for internet writers, if I pay for a book I expect decent proofreading. What is on the front flyleaf? In discussing Hiken's greatest creation, Sgt. Bilko, the editor allows the author to misspell "Sergeant." Three times. On the flyleaf, which is supposed to dazzle us.
And then Amazon compounds the sloppiness. In going through the sample pages, I find that pages 7 & 8 aren't even from this book.
Some people claim that demanding literacy and correct spelling from authors and editors is excessive. Well -- they probably wouldn't say "excessive"; they'd say it was "sucky". Or "suckee", if they wanted to be exotic. These people make my jaw drop.
I gave three stars because it's not fair to rate a book high or low when you haven't read it yet.
*******
Since writing the above, I've read the book. It's worth the three stars I gave it. It's pretty good; worth reading. But just because there IS a book on a hitherto uncovered topic doesn't automatically mean it's a GOOD book.

Security Is The New Watchword.......2005-02-01
A few years ago (I'm told) Bill Gates called all of the developers together and told them that the big thing it was necessary for Microsoft to do was to implement strong security systems in their mainstream products. I don't know if this is true, but the biggest changes in their 2003 series of products is greatly increased security emphasis.
Exchange Server is no exception. This book is oriented around how to get the most out of Exchange Server while protecting the security of the messaging system. It is written by a network security expert who worked closely with the Exchange Server development team. Published by Microsoft Press, this can be viewed as the definitive book on the subject.
Gotta have it........2004-05-28
In today's environment of spam, virus, and bad things in general, knowing how to protect yourself is a very valuable commodity.
Paul has managed to condense everything you need down to a nutshell, okay, maybe more like an acorn tree. But it's all in there.
Chapter 20 should be a must-read for anyone in messaging. It goes over some of the legal aspects of you and your messaging system. Most administrators don't realize the possible litigation that they can get themselves into. And sure, your company will protect you. When it comes to a 10 million dollar lawsuit or an employee, who's going to get the shaft?!
Ever worry about what permissions have been set on something? Take a look at Appendix B for an in-depth guide.
GREAT book on Exchange 2003 Security!!.......2004-05-25
If you're going to pick up a book on Microsoft Exchange Server security, this is *the* book for you. Great and comprehensive coverage on everything to do with Microsoft Exchange Server from one of the foremost Exchange Security experts in the industry. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in understanding what's entailed in Exchange-related security, including some ground-breaking content on compliance (Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPPA, SEC, etc.) and legislation pertaining to e-mail ... which alone is well worth the price of the book! Highly recommended!!
The only comprehensive Exchange security book.......2004-05-17
I admit to a certain degree of bias, being that I'm the author and all, but this really *is* the only book that takes a comprehensive approach to every aspect of Exchange security. The book covers physical and operational security, patch management, end-to-end transport security using IPsec and TLS, client-to-client security with S/MIME, and even security issues related to mobile devices like BlackBerrys and Windows Mobile smartphones. Sample chapters are available from a variety of places, including the book's companion website at e2ksecurity.com.
Great survey, readable, comprehensive.......2004-05-05
Good book! I'm not an Exchange admin, but I need to understand what the issues are in Exchange and Outlook security. I found the book very helpful in a couple of ways:
* covers 5.5. and 2K, even though the title says 2003
* covers life cycle issues like archiving and compliance
* covers Active Directory and Certificate issues
I was impressed that the book managed to combine enough detail to be valuable to technical users, with clear enough descriptions of the issues to make sense to non-techies.
Customer Reviews:
A good local history of England, and how to research it........1998-03-22
Dr. Tiller is a central figure in the renaissance of English local history studies that has taken place over the last 20 years. In this book, her unapologetic promotion of the "new" local history is strong. This "new" history usually concentrates on thematic studies of communities, and tracks individual lives within those communities. This tends to de-emphasize, for example, landscape studies, or those eras, so important for many of the places that we study, where tracking individuals is often impossible (e.g. Anglo-saxon or earlier periods). Whilst probably not "local history" in the true sense, Dr. Tiller seems to have little regard for the genealogists or those merely seeking nostalgia. We should remember that it is these motives, within the general public, that are the engines which drive the politicians to support the county record offices, which in turn, facilitate the serious studies that Dr. Tiller proposes. Unexpectedly, this book is in fact a good general introduction to the local history of England, as well as being a sophisticated "how to" volume. This is distinctive, therefore, amongst the fairly large bibliography on researching english local history that now exists. An interesting foil is provided by the recent book by Michael A. Williams, "Researching Local History", which is one man's journey around some of the later aspects of the subject. Professor Williams's is also a sophisticated "how to" volume but lacks Dr. Tiller's comprehensiveness.
If you want a single volume as a general introduction to the local history of England, then buy Tiller. As a bonus, you will also get a good guide to research techniques, that is probably about as good as any other that is available on this subject.

Book Description
One of the greatest stories of nineteenth-century America is its expansion into the lands west of the Mississippi. Now acclaimed author Page Stegner shows in one sweeping volume how the opening of the western frontier ignited and defined a young nation's spirit of enterprise and discovery. Winning the Wild West is an illustrated celebration of that epoch, rich in the deeds and exploits of legendary and forgotten characters, replete with hundreds of never-before-published artifacts and archival images reproduced in full color.
Stories of life on the frontier fire our imaginations, but Page Stegner looks upon this epic story with an unflinching gaze, recognizing, as Larry McMurtry notes in his foreword, how severe and equivocal the struggle to "win" the West was. Our great land was once filled with millions of buffalo that were needlessly slaughtered, the rivers of our heartland were also mismanaged, and California, the most western state, saw the complete eradication of native tribes now lost forever. The era's pioneers were often doing little more than clinging to life*with what little strength they had left.
From Lewis and Clark to the massacre at Wounded Knee, Page Stegner re-creates an engrossing, gorgeous panorama of trappers, wagon trains, cattle drives, guns, gold rushes, outlaws, lawmen, settlers, buffalo hunters, railroads, cowboy hats, and barbed wire-the hard lives of the people and the items they carried that made a new culture, a new society...a new nation.
Customer Reviews:
Great pictures, poor history.......2006-02-27
If you're buying the book simply to decorate the coffee table it will do. The paintings and photographs are stunning, but 90% of them can be found in the Time-Life Old West series and other common sources.
The historical research is questionable, however. In the segment on Texas history, for example, the author places Anuhuac southwest of Laredo. If you're in Vermont, where the author lives, looking at a map of Mexico, you'll find a town named Anuhuac in that general area. The Anuhuac that played a part in the Texas Revolution is actually several hundred miles further east near Houston. He also places Gonzales west of San Antonio. I live in Gonzales, and I unfortunately find myself occasionally having to visit San Antonio. In order to get home I have to travel east, not west, at a high rate of speed.
When it comes to Stegner's account of Indian/Anglo relations he is typical of his generation of "historians". "Indian good, white bad." A Comanche could rape, torture, mutilate and murder every man, woman and child in a non-Comanche family and still be acting within the Comanche moral code. In fact, he would be hailed as a hero within his culture. This is ingnored by Stegner's ilk, while any retaliation by Anglos is trumpeted as proof of American's genocidal tendencies.
If you can get it cheap for the pictures buy it. Otherwise let it go.
Save Your Money.......2005-03-22
This is an anti-American history of westward expansion. Stegner has an obvious contempt for those who fought for and settled the American west. The portion on the war with Mexico and the annexation of Texas reveal an ignorance of those involved and their motivations. If your looking for an objective historical account of westward expansion look somewhere else. If political correctness bordering on bigotry is your thing, this is the book for you. Great Illustrations.
A visually rich and satisfying history of the West.......2004-04-17
This is a really fine book covering the westward expansion of the American frontier during the 19th century. The quality of page design, richness of images (photos new and old, paintings by western artists, maps, posters), and the rich detail and freshness of the text make this a book that's a feast for the eye and the curious mind with every turn of the page.
As just one example, the chapter on cowboys and the open range includes reproductions of paintings by Charles Russell, Frederic Remington, and other western artists (including a two-page spread of Russell's dramatic "Smoke of a .45"); a page-long quote from "Teddy Blue" Abbot's "We Pointed Them North"; a map of the cattle drive trails and railroad lines; vintage photographs of cowboys on the trail, roping and branding cattle, breaking horses, as well as studio portraits of cowboys; two-page illustrated essays on Dodge City and its peace keepers, the Colt Revolver, the Stetson hat, Black cowboys, and vigilantes; and full-page color photographs of rolling grassland in the Black Hills, the high deserts east of the Southwest, and cattle under a big sky with snow covered mountains in the distance.
Stegner's book is both political and social history, and it captures both the triumphs and losses that represent the "winning" of the West, including the wars declared and undeclared against the Native American tribes. The strongest image in this regard is a vintage photograph of the mass burials at Wounded Knee in 1890. His book is also an album of brilliantly photographed color images of the western landscape -- plains, mountains, lakes, deserts, in all seasons. You understand that these breathtaking spaces are as much a part of the Western experience as the stories of the people who traversed and settled in them.
The nearly square format of the book gives the pages room to breathe, allowing the book to absorb a vast amount of textual and visual materials. Stegner's text is richly interlaced with quotations from 19th-century contemporaries and established historians. The credits pages are a distinguished list of sources including the Amon Carter Museum of Fort Worth, Texas; the Buffalo Bill Cody Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming; Harper's Weekly; and the Joslyn Art Museum of Omaha, Nebraska. There's an excellent bibliography of over 60 books about the West, from "Teddy Blue" Abbot's and Andy Adams' cowboy memoirs to "American Life Histories" by the WPA Project. There's also a handy index of over 550 items.
I highly recommend this book. It is 400 pages that will absorb anyone interested in the Western experience, whether they know a little or a lot about the subject.
One stop Wild West History.......2003-09-10
This is a great book. Wonderful in many ways including the great cover art and binding.
While no single volume could completely tell the story of westward expansion, this one makes a valiant attempt. If you could purchase just one book to help you understand the race across the west, this is it.
The text is full and specifically highlights the lives of many famous and infamous characters. Chapters are broken down by particular era, which allows you to look into those areas of greatest interest.
The book is filled with vivid photography. The landscapes are beautiful and breathtaking. Many artifacts are photographed and explained, offering a one stop Wild West museum. You couldn't find this many artifacts and historical photos in ten museums!
A great book. Enjoy reading it all or skimming through your favorite stories.

Book Description
In this lay reader's introduction to the most spectacular and devastating of all geological events, Rolf Schick describes how earthquakes and volcanoes are related, and how they are an integral part of Earth's structure. Tracing the latest findings and theories in plate tectonics, he helps readers ask and answer the basic questions: What was it during the formation of Earth that led to these phenomena? Why do they occur in certain areas and not in others? How can we, within reason, protect ourselves from their devastation? And how far have we come, and how far can we go, in predicting when they will strike? For the reader who wants a concise and accessible guide to what makes the ground shake and explode, this is the perfect introduction.

Book Description
Applying a Quality Approach to Clean Up a Shoreline... An incredible story of the success that can result when business, government and citizens unite to advance a common cause. By the end of the 1980s, the once beautiful and treasured New Jersey shoreline had become one of the most polluted coasts in the United States. Communities felt the frustration of record-high beach closings and disappearing wildlife. In one dramatic example, over 1,000 bottlenose dolphins washed ashore along the Atlantic coast for Florida to New Jersey. As the situation worsened, the challenging job of finding a solution was eventually taken up by an innovative partnership representing business, government, and private citizens. At the direction of Phillip Scanlan, who brought along his talent and Baldrige Award-winning experience as a quality vice president at AT&T, the group borrowed a successful tactic businesses had been using for years: They applied a total quality approach to clean up the shore and achieved a culture of continuous improvement. In The Dolphins Are Back, Phil Scanlan shares with you two compelling stories simultaneously: his experience implementing the industry-renowned quality methodology at AT&T, as well as the struggles and ultimate success of applying this same quality approach to cleaning up the New Jersey shore. In telling this story, Phil conveys the importance of recognizing the potential strength in relationships among business, government, and citizens. In a quality environment, these partnerships have the ability to tackle any seemingly complex and impossible task. If you're looking for an innovative but proven solution to a shared environmental problem, consider the powerful quality approach described in these pages. As Phil discovered early on in leading this tea, people are interested and want improvement. They just need an effective process model they can understand and apply.
Customer Reviews:
The Dolphins Are Back is a book to have.......1998-07-01
As a child I was intrigued by a set of nested building blocks received as a gift. When I opened the box, I first saw a single large cube with colorful images of animals on all sides. As I examined it further (bringing an array of quality tools to the situation), I realized that the cube contained a number of progressively smaller blocks. The gift, it turned out, was not just one cube, but a complete set of building blocks, each with its own theme and brilliant images.
Phil Scanlan's new book, "The Dolphins Are Back (Productivity Press 1998)", is very much like those blocks. It is at first look a book about a remarkable environmental cleanup project. In 1987-88, problems of water pollution had reached a critical point, as unprecedented numbers of dead and dying bottle-nosed dolphins washed ashore along the Atlantic coast from New Jersey to Florida. During this 12-month period, 740 animals were swept ashore and died, whereas in the course of a normal beach season, about three or four dead dolphins wash up. In New Jersey, the discovery of waste, debris and pollution also led to beach closings that destroyed vacation plans and threatened shore tourism. Ten years later, the dolphins are back, and New Jersey's shore ranks as one of the cleanest in the country. How was this feat accomplished? Phil Scanlan's book presents a detailed chronology and explanation of the steps through which the quality approach was utilized to bring about this most impressive outcome.
A closer look reveals that the The Dolphins Are Back is also an excellent textbook on the quality approach. It presents a comprehensive overview and detailed case study that illustrates the theory, concepts, strategies and tools of the continuous quality improvement approach.
Beyond this, the book is a tribute -- a tribute to AT&T and the leadership role the corporation has played nationally in advancing the cause of quality, and in generously contributing expertise and insight for the public good. It is also a trib! ute to the skilled and dedicated professionals from AT&T, and colleagues from Quality New Jersey, the QNJ Environment Focus Group and New Jersey state government who contributed their time and talent to the project.
Looking still further, The Dolphins is a testament to the power of teamwork and collaborative problem solving, and an inspirational reminder of what is possible when resources and expertise from the private and public sectors are brought together to address complex and critical issues of the day.
At its core, this is also a book about a teacher, Phil Scanlan. Between the lines it tells the story of a man whose insight, dedication and generosity have made a difference -- to the ecology of the Atlantic coast, New Jersey tourism, the quality movement nationally, and to the many people and organizations he has touched through his work.
So, The Dolphins Are Back is a book to have. It's a set of building blocks, each with its own theme and brilliance.
