        Book Description

This provocative book makes the case that trade unions must intervene in economic restructuring in order to halt the erosion of job quality in today's economy. The author, who is a professor at the Kogod College of Business Administration at The American University in Washington, D.C., specializes in labor-management relations and the social responsibilities of business and has brought both of these disciplines into focus for this book. Jacobs forcefully argues that collective bargaining is not merely a means to determine wages and benefits, but is also a powerful social tool that can move the corporation toward more socially responsible and responsive forms. While American unions are currently very weak, their regeneration should be a matter of public concern. Jacobs considers shopfloor organization, health-care delivery, and public education in the United States, as well as the process of democratization in Poland and South Africa, and explains how "transformational bargaining" by trade unions may promote favorable outcomes. The author explores the conventional wisdom in industrial relations theory and argues that business unionism, which focuses on "bread and butter," is not an adequate model for American labor. Instead, unions can and must negotiate profound change in organizations. Unions can win bargains that preserve jobs, alter product lines, extend ownership, and redraw organizational boundaries. These possibilities are illuminated in case studies on such topics as auto manufacturing, public schools and Italian unionism.

          5 out of 5 stars A Masterful Musician.......2005-10-17

I am a professional musician, and have always enjoyed Randy Newman's music -- but getting a good look at the actual sheet music made me appreciate him even more. The music is complex and subtle, and a powerful work of art.

          5 out of 5 stars Really perfect.......2004-11-05

The kind of transcriptions we are all looking for. Perfect, super. I'm anxiuos to come back to home to play them. Randy is great: in words, notes and message. I wait for a next book, specially to see if Memo to my son is there, you know.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally transcripted, and a good selection.......2003-10-17

There are three reasons why this book deserves five stars:

          1) The transcriptions are extremely good. Instead of an interpretation that sounds dubiously like the melody line, the piano parts have been reproduced from Newman's own archives. Some of them are not EXACTLY what Newman plays, but for the most part they are.

          2) The selection of songs is such that consideration has gone into what is 'fun' to play on the piano. Included is music from Newman's entire career, from 'Davy the Fat Boy' through to 'Bleeding All Over the Place'. Thought has been put into which songs work best on the piano and which ones are not repetitious.

          3) The lyrics have been expertly aligned with the music and the music itself is clear and well presented.

For these reasons, the Randy Newman Anthology is a superlative songbook compared to the plethora of dodgy chord-based songbooks out there. Randy Newman's 'Bad Love' songbook is also very good.

For a true Newman fan this book will never get old.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Randy Newman...........2003-04-25

...Then this book is a must-have! Not only is it full of otherwise impossible-to-find songs (I spent nearly ten years looking for "Gainesville" after losing my copy), it includes an invaluable introduction by Michael Roth, probably the world's greatest expert on Newman. Roth's advice on just how to approach Newman's scores is borne of decades of collaboration with the composer and will help you give that "Newman feel" to your playing. For singers, this book offers a wealth of little-known gems to add to your repertoire. Yes, it doesn't include a lot of his big hits, but you can find those anywhere. This is the book I've been waiting for.

4 out of 5 stars Sing & Play Like Randy.......2001-05-24

Like Randy Newman's music? This book may be for you. It includes lyrics, tab and piano accompaniment, which follow Randy's recorded versions fairly well (at least for the songs on his album with "Sail Away"). For instance, on "Dancing Bear" the arrangement has a vocal line with a piano accompaniment which is pretty much what Randy plays. You can sound just like him if you want, or of course take it somewhere else. The book is at an intermediate level.

The songbook includes the following songs: Burn On, Cowboy, Davy The Fat Boy, I Think It's Going To Rain Today, It's Lonely At The Top, Living Without You, Mama Told Me Not To Come, Political Science, Simon Smith And The Amazing Dancing Bear, Feels Like Home, Baltimore, In Germany Before The War, Miami, Real Emotional Girl, Same Girl, Song For The Dead, You've Got A Friend In Me, Sail Away, Old Man, The God Song That's Why I Love Mankind, You Can Leave Your Hat On, Guilty, Rednecks, Marie, Louisiana 1927, One More Hour, I Love L A, Short People, It's Money That Matters, Dixie Flyer, I Want You To Hurt Like I Do, I Love To See You Smile, Gainesville, Bleeding All Over The Place, Sandman's Coming.

This collection includes songs and several suites--piano adaptations of Newman's instrumental film music that shows a different side than his songs. Each piece contains historical and contextual comments from Randy Newman.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but full of tracks that are difficult to find.......2007-05-11

This second volume of Randy Newman sheet music is of the same high quality that Volume One was. The transcriptions are accurate and each song is detailed in the key it was recorded in. There are some excellent selections in this book, including 'Laugh and Be Happy', 'My Life is Good', 'Make Up Your Mind', 'The Ballad of the Three Amigos' and the two instrumental tracks from 'Avalon' and 'Awakenings'.

Perhaps the only 'problem', if you can call it that, is that the selections are mainly from particular movie soundtracks. I am a huge fan of Randy's songwriting and have all of his albums (including the box-set 'Guilty', which does have some of the film scores reproduced on Volume 2); however, I have not tracked down the soundtracks from 'Monsters Inc', 'Toy Story' and 'James and Giant Peach', for example. Further, the theatre piece 'The Education of Randy Newman' is, to the best of my knowledge, not available for public release. There is a song in the Volume 2 anthology called 'Stupid Little Songs' which is from that theatrical piece; however, given its unavailability, we really have no idea (apart from the how the music reads on the page) how Randy sings it or how it should go. Therefore, half of the music in this book is kind of inaccessible, in a sense of the word. You will need to be diligent to hunt down the other tracks that are not as easily accessible should you wish to play the music in Volume 2 as confidently and assuredly as you would with the music in Volume 1.

Nevertheless, it's Randy, and he writes well. I love his music and any addition to his sheet music ouevre is welcomed with open arms.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of Randy Newman songs.......2006-11-10

This collection of Randy Newman tunes is excellent, and a must-have for any Randy Newman fan interested in Randy's film work, or his knack for writing great songs. Buy it.

            Book Description

Dateline -- Paramount Pictures announces the formation of its own television network, with a new Star Trek program as its cornerstone. The year is not 1994, but 1977 and the new series titled Star Trek Phase II would have reunited almost all of The Original Series cast members. A footnote in Star Trek history, few people realize how close Star Trek Phase II came to full-scale production.

All of the actors were signed except Leonard Nimoy, whose Spock character would have been replaced by a young Vulcan, Xon. Sets and props were designed and constructed. New models, including a never seen model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, were built. A special effects company was hired, and scripts were written, including a two-hour teleplay that would have been the pilot for the series. But, the plans for the network were canceled, and Paramount decided to shift gears to feature film production, shutting down the television series -- less than two weeks before the beginning of principal photography. The result of this decision was Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

This is the story of the lost Star Trek series. Including full behind-the-series information on the show that almost-but didn't-happen. Full of never-before-seen color artwork, storyboards, blueprints, technical information and photos: Star Trek Phase II reveals the vision behind Gene Roddenberry's lost glimpse of the future.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars You don't need to worry, Gene........2004-04-04

Rewind to 1977, when Star Trek was entering its seventh year of syndication, creator of the Original Series and the 22-episode Star Trek animated series, Gene Roddenberry, conceived of a new live Star Trek series. The show was called Star Trek Phase II, and Paramount decided to have the show on their new network. Sets and props and costumes were designed and tested. The writers also wrote a two-hour teleplay which is the pilot for Phase II. The cast almost reunited, but without Leonard Nimoy.

When principal photography almost started, Paramount decided to cancel the network and the series. Instead of having Star Wars cancel them out, they decided to have a movie instead of a pilot... thus begins the story of the lost Star Trek series. They made the first episode of Phase II, which was "In Thy Image, Parts I and II" into the first movie, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." Several Phase II stories are in this book and the design of the never-seen-before U.S.S. Enterprise are shown. The book is 360 pages of information on the almost-but-didn't happen Star Trek series.

Hold on, Gene, there is some way to salvage the pieces of the Phase II sets. Now, fast forward to 2001-2004 where Star Trek movies are made more better on DVD. Watch the text commentary by Michael and Denise Okuda on the Original cast films, where they reveal stuff about Phase II, like what pieces were used in the six Trek films and "Nemesis." This great pair is more than you need for a Star Trek series.

4 out of 5 stars The Missing Link!.......2001-10-28

"Star Trek: Phase II" was a planned series that would pick up where The Original Series left off. This project never materialized, but the ideas and concepts were later used in The Motion Picture and The Next Generation.

This book is an interesting slice of the life of the Star Trek Saga, and you are given a peep-hole into the mind of Gene Rodenberry: what he wanted to do and where he was going.

The illustrations are superb and well worth the pice.

Personally, it is refreshing to see the gap between the Original Series and the later spin-offs filled. You sense that something severe has happened between "Turnabout Intruder" and "Encounter at Farpoint." The movies and the novels try to bridge the gap, but this book makes the link seamless.

This book is Sci-Fi's "Lucy," the missing link!

            4 out of 5 stars Good info.......2001-06-20

This book contained information about the transformation from TOS to the making of "phase II", a TV series that eventually was scrapped and the pilot was morphed into ST:TMP. I found the information to be interesting, and would recommend it to any Star Trek fan, especially those of TOS.

Most interesting to me was the analyses of how the scrapped Phase II produced characters and scripts that were eventually seen on ST:TNG. Xon "became" Data, Ilia "became" Troi, and Decker=Riker is fairly obvious. Additionally, scripts like "The Child" that were written for Phase II, were later filmed for ST:TNG.

Also included is the full first draft script of the pilot for Phase II, which again morphed int ST:TMP. It's interesting to see how the drafts change and (mostly) become stronger. Furthermore, are 4-8 page descriptions of all each story that would have been in Phase IIs first season.

I do recommend this book for any Trek fan. The background information is limited, as the majority of the book is the scripts, but it is still an interesting piece of ST history.

4 out of 5 stars Star Trek Phase II: The Lost Series.......2001-02-13

Books like these seldom hit the bookshelves here so I bought it the first time I saw it and was not disappointed. The content is interesting specially for Original Series fans. It gives you an insight into Roddenberry's vision after the first three seasons. It even includes sketches, scripts, plots, behind-the-scene info. The story-telling is a little dull. Then again, this is not a novel, so I believe an exception is in order. All-in-all, an exceptional piece of literature.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of interesting information, though a little dry.......1999-06-15

A fascinating look behind-the-scenes of the Trek that never was. Much of this information has been revealed before, but there is still plenty of information that will be new to even the seasoned Trek veteran. The scripts are a nice addition to the book as well. My only complaint is that the writing style tends to be a bit dry. This may have made a better documentary than a book.

            5 out of 5 stars People's "Primer" for 21st Century.......2005-11-24

I completely disagreed with the "know it alls" that trash this book. This is in fact the people's "primer" for the 21st Century. In the industrial era one needed to learn reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. Today one needs to know how to find the needle in the haystack. While Google is still in the 4th grade, it will evolve quickly in the next few years, and the Google founders appear well on their way to making all of the world's information available to anyone anywhere. This will itself change the world.

This is a tremendous resource, and I do not consider it outdated because it is still the best available orientation to Google. I do agree that there are online supplements that can update the knowledge in this book and cover emerging capabilities from Google.

Bottom line: Google is central to all our lives now, this book is a useful jump start to anyone who wishes to leverage all of Google, not just the 10% most people see. For advanced IT people, I recommend Stephen Arnold's book, "The Google Legacy," available from Infonortics.co.uk, or at IOP '06 in January 2006.

But this information can easily be found anywhere on the Internet. The only chapter I found useful was the advanced searching portion. I read that in less than five minutes, however, and I am far from being a speed reader.

Also, it is only a matter of time before the information becomes outdated. It may already be outdated. Google is constantly changing and being updated (Google Labs) and a lot of this book will be useless by next year.

Finally, Google is very easy and simple to learn. Anyone can be a "power searcher" after learning just a few short lessons. You don't have to spend this much money to get a book that you can read in about five minutes.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book!.......2005-07-30

Fritz Schneider, Nancy Blachman and Eric Fredricksen did indeed an excellent job with this book.

Every chapter is full of valuable information and has helped me to discover that Google is not just the search engine I had been so used to for many years. Before reading this book I had no idea abouth all the things that can be done with Google. No wonder the authors named this book "How to Do EVERYTHING with Google."

I was particularly surprised by discovering the Google Calculator, and got so exited that decided to write an online keyboard for the calculator (...)

I loved the note at the end of Chapter 3 that says: "The Calculator is even rumored to hold the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Just ask!"

I believe this is a must book in this information era. Don't lose your time trying to use Google to find what Google can do, get the bigger picture first by reading this book, and then start the adventure. You will be surprised.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - Google Has Much To Offer.......2004-08-04

I purchased this book at the recommendation of my grandson, our family's resident hacker and wiz. I have to say I learned quite a bit about google by reading this book. Although I would not call myself a google expert, I will say that I am now a "power user". This books is not only thorough but written well enough that a non technical person such as myself can read it. Excellent job. Well done!

                Book Description

March 23, 2003: U.S. Marines from the Task Force Tarawa are caught up in one of the most unexpected battles of the Iraq War. What started off as a routine maneuver to secure two key bridges in the town of Nasiriyah in southern Iraq degenerated into a nightmarish twenty-four-hour urban clash in which eighteen young Marines lost their lives and more than thirty-five others were wounded. It was the single heaviest loss suffered by the U.S. military during the initial combat phase of the war.

On that fateful day, Marines came across the burned-out remains of a U.S. Army convoy that had been ambushed by Saddam Hussein’s forces outside Nasiriyah. In an attempt to rescue the missing soldiers and seize the bridges before the Iraqis could destroy them, the Marines decided to advance their attack on the city by twenty-four hours. What happened next is a gripping and gruesome tale of military blunders, tragedy, and heroism.

Huge M1 tanks leading the attack were rendered ineffective when they became mired in an open sewer. Then a company of Marines took a wrong turn and ended up on a deadly stretch of road where their armored personal carriers were hit by devastating rocket-propelled grenade fire. USAF planes called in for fire support play their own part in the unfolding cataclysm when they accidentally strafed the vehicles. The attempt to rescue the dead and dying stranded in “ambush alley” only drew more Marines into the slaughter.

This was not a battle of modern technology, but a brutal close-quarter urban knife fight that tested the Marines’ resolve and training to the limit. At the heart of the drama were the fifty or so young Marines, most of whom had never been to war, who were embroiled in a battle of epic proportions from which neither their commanders nor the technological might of the U.S. military could save them.

With a novelist’s gift for pace and tension, Tim Pritchard brilliantly captures the chaos, panic, and courage of the fight for Nasiriyah, bringing back in full force the day that a perfunctory task turned into a battle for survival.

"Ambush Alley" is a gut-wrenching account of unadulterated terror that's hard to read yet impossible to put down. London-based journalist and filmmaker Tim Pritchard, who was embedded with US troops during the initial stages of the American-led invasion of Iraq, paints a compelling picture of one of the costliest battles of the Iraq war that will at turns anger, horrify, and sadden, regardless of one's political views."

5 out of 5 stars A gripping, personal telling of courage, chaos and combat.......2007-09-23

A friend gave me this book after a lengthly conversation about the Iraq war. I am not a typical reader of war history, so the book stayed on the bottom of my bedside pile. Then one day, I picked it up to check out a few pages. Two days later, after completing the book, I called my friend to thank him for sharing this extraordinary and unfortunate story of battle and of what these soldiers face. My heart goes out to our courageous troops during these tremendously difficult and conflicting times.
Thanks, Tim Pritchard, for telling this story.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary accounting told by Tim Pritchard.......2007-07-23

I loved Mr. Pritchard's account of an extraordinary time in Iraq. Mr. Pritchard manages to capture his audience by providing details and unique insights on how life in Iraq was for American troops in the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq.

His account of the soldiers in this conflict is remarkable and I highly recommend this book to historians, war buffs and others who are just interested in learning more about a war that is often only understood in political terms.

I give this book a big thumbs up and five stars and I look forward to reading other books from this author.

3 out of 5 stars Needs more details.......2007-06-18

Pritchard has done a nice job writing about such an important conflict.

I have to ask all the former and current soldiers out there: are (or were) we always so messed up or do I just have selective memory?

What this book needs, and why I only gave it thre stars, is more focus during the critical small-unit battles. It seems like 1/2 the book just says over and over again about figures running out and taking pot shots and marinese not sure what was happening. Now, while that may be what transpired, books like Blackhawk Down do a much better job at capturing the chaos.

I mean we know so little of what happened on the North Bridge, but we get to know that it was hell for them. Ony at the alamo, does Pritchard go into depth on the smaller details that reallys seem to make or break this type of book.

For example, please see Not a good day to die or We were soldiers once and young (clearly the book, not the DVD). Also, Generation Kill does nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Ambush Alley- Well worth reading.......2007-04-11

This book was so interesting that I purchased additional copies for gifts to my two sons. As is often said, the plan is good only until the first shot is fired. This book illustrates this very well and shows that Ambush Alley was a prime example of not only what can go wrong but also of the ingenuity, dedication and bravery of the American fighting men and women to overcome the bad things that can happen in battle.

                    Book Description

What duty do we have to stop others from doing wrong? The question is intelligible in almost any culture, but few seek to answer it in a rigorous fashion. The most striking exception is found in the Islamic tradition where "commanding right and forbidding wrong" is a central moral tenet. Michael Cook's comprehensive and compelling analysis represents the first sustained attempt to chart the history of Islamic reflection on this obligation and to explain its relevance for politics and ideology in the contemporary Islamic world.

What kind of duty do we have to try to stop other people doing wrong? The question is intelligible in just about any culture, but few of them seek to answer it in a rigorous fashion. The most striking exception is found in the Islamic tradition, where 'commanding right' and 'forbidding wrong' is a central moral tenet already mentioned in the Koran. As an historian of Islam whose research has ranged widely over space and time, Michael Cook is well placed to interpret this complex subject. His book represents the first sustained attempt to map the history of Islamic reflection on this obligation. It covers the origins of Muslim thinking about 'forbidding wrong', the relevant doctrinal developments over the centuries, and its significance in Sunni and Shi'ite thought today. In this way the book contributes to the understanding of Islamic thought, its relevance to contemporary Islamic politics and ideology, and raises fundamental questions for the comparative study of ethics.

                    5 out of 5 stars Monumental Work.......2002-03-26

Cook has achieved something special in this work. He demonstrates that he is a rare and gifted scholar with an awesome ability to intregrate vast seas of thought into one coherent whole. This work covers "Commanding Right and Forbidding Wrong" from its origins in the Koran up until modern times, though he focuses upon the classical period throughout the vast majority of his book. All sects with a significant body of material are represented. Why this topic?-- Basically, this doctrine has historically proved to be the major foundation of any Islamic social ethic; therefore, how it is concieved usually predetermines how one thinks justice ought to be established in this word or by whom it should be established. Cook possesses a talent for giving seemingly distant and irrelevant doctrines a timely relation to today insofar as his studies illuminates how two different cultures approach moral actions in their respective societies. Parts of this book are vast and copiously detailed; however, it was exhaustively documented and extremely efficiently organized throughout. Thus, it is enormously accessible and immensely useful for reference as well. The high price is unfortunate, but it is without a doubt worth the money for anyone interested in Islamics.

                        Book Description

This timely reference provides an integrated, ultidisciplinary approach to CVD on a relatively fundamental level, enabling researchers with a basic background in any engineering field to readily understand and apply CVD techniques. At the same time, it becomes the first work to address CVD from the perspective of the properties of thin films and show how to achieve these properties by understanding and modifying deposition conditions.
