Book Description
A companion volume to Rogers's Insurance in the Soviet Union (Praeger Publishers, 1986), this new work provides an in-depth examination of the operations of insurance industries in eastern European socialist countries. Rogers covers the administrative structure of insurance programs, the types of policies written, the insurance markets, and the extent of insurance protection. These topics provide the background to his discussion of two important issues: the transition from private to public insurance in socialist countries and the influence of the Soviet Union. In the latter case, there is explicit recognition by Soviet writers that practices in Eastern Europe have resulted in modifications of Soviet practices.

Fifty issues--collected into 15 volumes that total 2,000 pages--the Hernandez brothers' Love and Rockets is an enormous achievement that helped to create a new audience for comics. Notable for their strong female characters and their focus on relationships, rather than on traditional comic-book 'action', the stories collected in this volume, and the rest of the series, show how the comic format can be used to create characters and situations as detailed and compelling as in any novel.
Reviewers have compared Gilbert Hernandez's work--set in the fictional Latin American town of Palomar--with that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Robert Altman. Reading his brother Jaime's work--most of which focuses on a group of Southern California Mexican American women--is like reading Tolstoy, if only Tolstoy had written about twenty-something punk girls. Love and Rockets has certainly earned its legendary reputation among the comic-book cognoscenti, and deserves to be read by an even wider audience. Welcome to the world of Los Bros Hernandez.

Book Description
Addressing such topics as the use and abuse of "American" images and the image of the United States itself, as a place, a product or an idea, this issue of Performance Research assesses the implications of America and its powerful impact on contemporary European culture. As it deconstructs American film, art, and performance from a variety of perspectives, On America debates the aesthetic forms and political strategies of the United States and the problems related to cultural predominance and displacement, identity and aesthetic practice.
Combining exciting and disturbing visual content with texts contributed by some of the world's most renowned scholars and performers, Performance Research provides a unique forum for multinational discourse among artists and academics. Now in its third year, this acclaimed journal is required reading for any serious student or practitioner working in the realm of performance.

Customer Reviews:
Engineer.......2007-09-06
This is a very good book for someone interested in the CATV industry.
It gives you a good explanation of the technologies that allow CATV companies the ability to provide all the services now available.
It does this in one book, so that you don't have to hunt through several books to find what you need, when you need it.
comprehensive but major reservations.......2006-11-24
This encyclopedic reference appears to do a good job of spanning the tremendous range of technology comprising satellite transmission and reception ("transception"); head-end organization; regional and "last mile" distribution; and set-top box technology, steering (unfortunately) way clear of the hardware, firmware, and software issues associated with providing modern unidirectional and bidirectional digital services atop multiple tuners in home network (including up-and-coming IPTV) environments supporting slavable hard drives. HOWEVER, being an electrical engineer and, therefore, having naturally started with the chapter on modulation and analog detection, I was WOEFULLY disappointed. It is fine to author mathematical treatments with a heavy hand ("It is imperative that one understand ...," etc.), but one had better know what one is talking about. This is clearly not the case. Where mathematics are presented as putative groundwork for some forthcoming exposition, they are erroneous and weak. Irrelevant theorems from high-school trigonometry are cited as if they are the be-all and end-all of signal analysis. The description of run-of-the-mill Fourier analysis is flawed and terminologically imprecise. The Nyquist theorem is casually referred to as "Harry Nyquist's rule" and cited as if it were a side-effect rather than a vital principle--a principle that is clearly way beyond the authors' understanding, insofar as I never saw any development of the sampling theorem or the expansion of bandlimited functions in terms of sinc (no, NOT sync) pulses. Now, when I studied communication systems, it was critical to have a crystalline understanding of how the signal and power spectra morphed as one proceeds from block to block throughout the (analog or digital) system. Yet, the authors are unable to do this, muffing through vague mention of "X Hz of single sideband and Y Hz of double sideband" and obfuscatory, misleading diagrams of time-domain phenomena accompanied with similarly vague notions of orthogonal this or quadrature that but--you guessed it--steering clear of any precise mathematical exposition (a la Hilbert transforms or diagrams that clearly indicate signal spectra, satellite spectra, aliased sidelobes, etc.) while fumbling through discussions of "two layers" of filtering that attempt to lump transmission "filtering" and reception "filtering" into one logical task without asserting or fully executing any conceptual paradigm whereby the one logically inverts the other. Where is the sampling theorem? Where is the fundamental mathematical expression of amplitude modulation? Where is a clear diagram that demonstrates how the I, Q, and L analog TV signals are multiplexed? Why is there discussion of envelope detection without any mention of the Schwarz inequality? "Constellations" of QAM, QPSK, etc., "signals" are diagrammed without the merest mention of what one is actually looking at, viz., message vectors in Kotelnikoff space based upon an eigenvalue expansion achieved via Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization. What really blew me away, though, was--brief though it was--the most nonsensical statement of all: The authors were discussing various directions in digital compression, and I saw a subchapter heading entitled, "Fractals." I said to myself, "Wow! That's great! I wonder what they've managed and how." Well, the "explanation" was nothing more than, "Fractals are really useful; the only problem is in figuring out the equations." That's like a math student telling his teacher, "I've got the solution to the problem! The only thing I'm missing is the detailed algebraic expansion!"
Comprehensive (2nd Edition).......2005-08-23
Well done compilation that is approachable while covering a lot of ground. If you need one book that touches on all the technology aspects of the cable industry and can fit on your bookshelf, this is it. I highly recommend it.
Excellent tutorial and reference.......2003-10-28
This book is a remarkable survey of a very broad field. It is necessarily somewhat superficial in its coverage of some of the more abstruse topics, but provides the necessary essentials an engineer needs to operate in the cable television environment. Unlike mere compendia of archival publications, this book has a consistent pedagogical viewpoint and notation. It is oriented towards practicing engineers, providing just enough theory to support successful problem solving. I recommend it to anyone working in the field.
At last a fully comprehensive CATV handbook.......2001-03-07
In a quick growing market, and with daily technological improvements like cable television, the lack of a thoroughly comprehensive compilation was being noticed. This book, a kind of Bible for that specific area of telecommunications engineering, could approach a vast variety of technical and operational issues for the CATV industry. A vade mecum (lat. ¨goes with me¨, means essential) for every CATV engineer or technician.

Most histories of the Seven Years' War focus on either the European or the North American theatre of the war. William Fowler's Empires at War is original, and praiseworthy, because he troubles to set the North American conflict in the European context. Bravo! Written in lively and engaging prose, Empires at War tells the story of what Fowler calls the "first world war." By keeping one foot in the North American wilderness and the other in the courts of Europe, Fowler makes a strong claim for the critical importance of early Canadian history to the history of the world. Fowler is also to be praised for the prominent role he assigns to the First Nations of eastern North America, who fought according to their own agendas and not merely as French or British auxiliaries. A third strength of this work is to found in Fowler's willingness to shatter myths. For example, many American historians have chosen to ignore George Washington's shameful conduct at Jumonville Glen, or they have looked for excuses for it. Fowler, to his credit, lays the blame right where it belongs: "It remains an open question why Washington felt compelled to attack a sleeping camp without warning at a time when two nations were at peace." Fowler is particularly good at fleshing out all of his characters: General Jeffrey Amherst is ruthless and brutal; James Wolfe nervous and complaining; the Marquis de Montcalm pessimistic and defeatist. The Seven Years' War led directly to the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the rise of Great Britain as a 19th-century superpower. It is vitally important that we learn more about these connections, and Fowler's Empires at War is a great place to start. --William Newbigging
Customer Reviews:
God it's great to read a well written book!.......2007-07-21
Although not as detailed as CRUCIBLE OF WAR, it covered the world wide conflict, bringing the players to life, providing an understanding of the strategies, and a continuity to the history. I would rank this as one of the best overviews I've ever read. I only wish I'd gotten the hard-copy since the maps and illustrations suffer in the paperback version.
An excellent review of a global conflict.......2006-12-14
This book is an excellent display of how the French and Indian war fits into a European context. The only reason I would not give it five stars is that it loses the global context that is really essential to the war. Fowler covers not only the crucial Indian involvement but the sheer hopelessness of a French Victory. He clearly lays out how the war unfolded and what each side had to gain. He shows how the British reorganize their systems in America and bring about an eventual victory. The British victory is put in the context of what it means for the American Revolution a little over a decade away.
This is an informative book, great job Mr. Fowler!!!!.......2006-06-27
William Fowler has done it again folks! He has managed a quite, impossible task, to write an informative history of the Seven Years' War and made it interesting.
I came upon this book while researching a paper on Canadian History. Once I had read the first chapter of "Empires At War..." I had made up my mind, I would write my paper on the Seven Years' War.
This book was a page turner, mostly because of the language that Mr. Fowler used. I have read many books on the subject of the Seven Years' War but none are presented in such a way as to make them interesting to anyone who doesn't find history exciting.
Mr. Fowler's book gives detailed descriptions of several key battles in the struggle for North America. He also offers an overview of Pontiac's Rebellion.
I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Colonial history. I found that Mr. Fowler did a good job of representing the "Canadian" perspective, however, he concentrates mostly on the British and French views. I would also recommend this book to people who are mildly interested in history, as it is so well written that anyone would be interested.
Good Review of the War For Empire.......2006-02-12
The book is an awesome interpretation of the French and Indian War.The author explains some little known facts on the war such as the reason that the French built better forts than the English(due to the presence of Italian engineers in their ranks such as Bourlamaque nee Bourlamacci). There are a few minor errors such as the Battle of Grant's Hill, but overall, this is a very fine book.
Great perspective on the French and Indian War.......2006-01-10
In his introduction, Fowler states, that the French and Indian War was the first world war. I would most defiantly agree with this statement. The French and Indian War went far beyond the continent of America. Battles, although on a smaller scale, occurred at the same time on the contents of Africa, Asia, and the India sub-continent. The numbers of troops, ships, and of course money were considered astronomical in those days.
As he clearly demonstrates in his book the amount of land, wealth, and potential of controlling America were the key factors in causing the war. Fowler integrates the politics of the Native Americas, English (and the colonists), and the French astonishingly well. He lays out clearly the goal of his side and how the various factions attempted to achieve those ends. From blunders, the surrendering of Fort Necessity, to successes, the Battle of Quebec, Fowler covers all aspects superbly.
Overall an excellent read and highly recommend and readable. I would just like to comment that here one can see the United States' gradual climb to the top of the world power food-chain; an event that would culminate at the end of World War II.

A building stone for Cognitive Science and for NLP.......2001-07-02
As you will be able to read in the new Foreword by Donald Broadbent of the University of Oxford, this book has had a major impact on psychology and helped achieve the switch to cognitive psychology. This book triggered much of the research that lead to Ulric Neisser's book "Cognitive Psychology". The five stars I gave are related to the importance of this book - when reading this book in 2001, without taking this background into account, I would still rate it 4 stars.
This book argues that our behavior is guided by our plans. People move from sub-goal to sub-goal until their purposes are achieved. A basic concept to explain that is the feedback loop which comes from engineering and is know as the TOTE model inside the NLP community. When NLPers try to model a person's strategy (e.g. for taking a decision), they are in fact looking for the basic building blocks of the TOTE. This books contains a chapter on "Plans for Speaking", showing the link between Miller and Chomsky, another father of modern cogintive science (and NLP).
Of course, if you just want to grasp the basic concept, there is no need to read this book given that many books that are linked to practical applications of cogitive science (such as NLP) will include the model. For instance, the first part of the third chapter of my book "7 Steps on Emotional Intelligence" is built around on the TOTE model.
I consider this book a "must" for any scolar of cognitive science in general and of NLP in particular that wants some background on their domain.
Patrick E.C. Merlevede, MSc -- co-author of "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence"
