Both the insurance consumer and seller often find it extremely difficult to properly assess the type of product sold in the marketplace. In order to shed some light on today's insurance markets and their regulation, David Lereah examines both property-liability (accident) insurance markets and bank (FDIC) markets in the context of information problems, and evaluates the effects of existing regulations on market participants. Lereah's probing study concludes that the government, aside from assuring industry stability, should act as an information center so that the competitive insurance market can be free to effectively allocate the marketing and selling of insurance.

Down Beat Up Beat and not much else.......2006-08-20

I bought this book because it was written by same author who wrote "Beyond the Downbeat." I thought DB/ UB was sort of prerequisite to BTD. It was not. I would not say it was money well spent.

Only covers beat patterns.......2004-09-08

If you want to know every beat pattern, this is the book for you. I was looking for a more in-depth look at cueing, cut-offs, how to use both hands. I found it slightly helpful but covered very very little. I read the entire book in 9 minutes.

Superb behind the scenes book and a real new edition.......1998-10-26

All Babylon 5 fans hear to this: you will really understand how our favourite series was set up, designed and came to life. The book is detailed and written for those who don't have a clue of any behind-the-scenes jargon. It really puts all fans inside the TV series, makes them a part of the building process. Also, if any of the readers has already bought the previous edition, please do spare the money and buy this really new edi- tion: it includes the complete Season 4 episode list and more (new) photos of the Season 4 episodes, plus real updates in the data. It comes to wonder then how the same duo (author, publisher) didn't thought of a real new edition of "The A-Z Guide to Babylon 5" but they reprinted the previous book as a ... "new edition".

If only there were more books like it..........1998-03-07

Creating Babylon 5 is the sort of coverage B5 has deserved --but not gotten-- for years. It is worth the price for the pictures alone, but David Bassom's text can more than compete for your attention. His writing is as strong here as in the A-Z Guide to Babylon 5. Worth every cent.

Photo Shop Elements Crafts.......2006-02-05

This Book is so fun and easy to use. It was written to be use with Photo Shop Elements 3, but it can be used with any photo editing program. The instructions are great and easy to follow. I did all the crafts in Paint Shop Pro X,and my friend did hers in Elements.
If you like to do fun crafts with your digital photos. this is a great book to have on your shelf.
Included in the instructions the author even gives you the names of the products you will need to complete each projects, and you can download the graphics from their web site.

Fun Projects Help You Learn Adobe Photoshop Elements.......2006-01-24

Books applying graphic software to craft projects aren't very numerous. Perhaps this is because authors of books about graphic software aren't familiar with traditional crafts. But when I opened this book, it was immediately evident by the way the material was presented that Elizabeth Bulger is at least familiar with traditional crafting; if not a crafter herself. Throughout her book, crafters will recognize the same simple presentation as found in craft books of all kinds.

Of course, by necessity, Bulger first explains the Adobe Photoshop Elements techniques, especially layers and selections, that she uses in the rest of the book. Her explanations aren't dry and laborious as those you will find in some books about graphic software and to make it even easier to follow along, you can download the example images from her accompanying website.

After a brief introduction to the software, Bulger offers a variety of fourteen projects which can be created using Photoshop Elements 3 or 4. Written from the traditional crafter's point of view, each project is an opportunity to practice new techniques. I love candles, so my favorite was the votive project. However, I could see the great small business potential of Bulger's technique for making a needlepoint canvas from a photo of the family pet. All of the projects can be completed with basic crafting supplies and inkjet printing papers. Bulger accompanies her step-by-step instructions with several photos showing the progression of the project. Here are the projects from the book--postcard, gift box, votive, journal cover, apron, placemat, canning jar label, needlepoint pillow, gift bucket, CD cover, ceramic tiles, Christmas ornament, gift wrapping and coasters.

They suffered an extraordinarily high casualty rate. Ten entire teams disappeared and another fourteen were overrun and annihilated. Many of the missions run by SOG fighters were rescues and attempted rescues of fellow soldiers and downed helicopter pilots who supported SOG missions.

In Secret Commandos, a riveting account of his years in SOG from 1969 to 1971, John Plaster describes his own remarkable covert missions as well as those of dozens of his comrades. He takes readers from his grueling training for SOG to his heart-stopping first assignments to his experiences as a SOG veteran and team leader. I had chills after reading the first three pages. The action is incredible. I was on pins and needles, like it was all happening for the first time right in front of me. Plaster also conveyed his love for his friends through these pages. There were several places that I cried just for feeling the sacrifice of these incredible, selfless warriors. I love this book.

Great Book!.......2007-02-19

I loved this book- couldn't put it down. I liked it even better than Maj. Plaster's other book, 'SOG-The Secret Wars of America's Commandos in Vietnam', which was itself a doggone fine book. Based on what I've read to this point, this is the difinitive book on SOG in Vietnam. But I did come away with a question after reading it: How did those guys move through the jungle so quietly with cannonballs for gonads?

I had no idea.......2007-01-12

I am not old enough to remember the tail end of Vietnam. Most of what I know came from history class or the movies. But this book allowed me to read about a part of the Vietnam war, I did not know existed. In fact, I believe a lot of people had no idea what was taking place in Cambodia and in Laos during this time period. Special forces, secret missions, thousands of North Vietnamese in "de-militarized" areas and only the Green Berets to keep them in check. Experience the first hand accounts of american special forces units as they are dropped deep behind enemy territory only to be hunted and attacked by forces who outnumber them significantly. Overall, the book is extemly interesting and a different kind of read. Real soldiers in real situtations, where any mistep means death.

Extraordinary bravery wasted in Washington.......2006-08-26

Having spent more than enough time in SEA before Plaster got there, I could relate to his willingness to fight the good fight to fight Communist aggression since I've been there and done that.
What was truly remarkable about this book is that despite the fact that his efforts to win the battles on the field of battle were really for naught, he does not spend much time dealing with the "cut and run" crowd in Washington who made any victory impossible. The willingness of his teams to insert into the forbidden zones of Cambodia and Laos in order to protect the boots on the ground further down the Ho Chi Minh trail, at a time when Congress shaking in its shoes seems remarkable even to this day. The personal stories to confront the enemy in the face of almost certain death will leave you shaking your head. But this is the military that one former president "loathed" as he visited Moscow and committed a felony in lying to his draft board in order to maintain his "political viability."

The bravery and dedication of men like Plaster was not only undermined, but desecrated as the draft dodgers and phony heroes with four months of service in the theater went back to testify in front of Congressional committees who did more to assist the Viet Cong than anything that the Soviets or Chinese did at the time. What a waste of brave men who gave their all while those who gave nothing rose to elected office on the bodies of their fellow Americans. Plaster names all the brave men who died during his tour of duty as he sings "Hey Blue" to acknowledge their deaths, and it is a list far too long. His detailed accounts of his many missions would make a great movie, but Hollywood has no taste for true bravery when it has important issues to deal with, like orcas in a tank.

This is a well written book, but it is too kind to those who stabbed men like Plaster and his fellow SOG teammates in the back and dishonored their patriotism and sacrifice. But nothing has changed. The same kind of heroism is being undermined today as politicians in Washington demand a similar end in Iraq, without a single minute of thought to their last "victory" in ending the war in Vietnam, costing millions of lives as they ran away. But their grandfathers did the same when they carried Chamberlain on their shoulders as he delivered "Peace in our time" and sent 80,000,000 humans to their deaths in the process.

Another great read..........2006-08-14

While both of Plaster's other books outline the historical aspects of this unit, I feel closer to these men, in a way, after reading this book. I can almost hear Pete "Fat Albert" Wilson bursting through the door bellowing "Wine for my troops," and I can nearly place Bob Howard's raked smile after defying the odds along the Trail.

While John's other books stand alone in their own historical significance to SOG, this book delivers the intensity of sudden combat and the heartbreaking tragedy of losing close friends like Pete Wilson, Fred Krupa, and Chuck Hein.

All of John's books have proven to be an invaluable asset to my research on SOG.

A Difficult, but Rewarding Life.......2003-07-22

Black Days, Black Dust is a very human story of an African- American man who battles the dangers of working in a series of coal mines over a period of many years. At times endearing and at times disturbing, this memoir frames an important time and place in American culture. The book is definitely affecting, and the accounts of the dangers working in the mines are brought to life succinctly.

An interesting personal "conversation".......2002-06-14

One of the joys of life is the opportunity to have a conversation with someone whose life experiences are vastly different from our own. My curiosity about the real-world work life of an underground coal miner, ... plus a chance web search, led me to Black Days, Black Dust. What a gem!

In reading this book it almost seemed like I was having a 'personal conversation' while sitting on the miner's front porch. It is a true account of 40 years of working underground in the coal fields. Very interesting account of every day life in a coal town (both above and below ground). It is a world apart from today's high-rise city office worker, ...yet curiously in other ways, there are many similarities!

I grew up in Pennsylvania, in the coal country. When a friend told me about Black Days, I thought I would give it a try. I'm glad I did. I have heard and read much of the way of life in 20th century Appalachia, but never had it tied together in a single book. If you are curious about life in the beginning of the last century; about the workings of the coal industry or simply want an insight into "How things used to be in West Virginia" try Black Days. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
