A Great Overview and Introduction.......2006-02-27

Lankford has done a marvelous job in bringing together the conflicting currents of the folk scene in the United States before, during, and after its glory days.

From the perspective of elapsed time, he traces the multiple streams that gave rise to the revival and flowering of the "old" music as well as the emergence of the "new" (or "new song") folk music.

It is a good introduction to anyone interested in music. While I disagree with some of his implied conclusions and question some of his cause-effect relationships, he does present the material in a straightforward linear manner. The echoes of some of the issues he raises are still felt in the folk community today.

It was a pretty good book. the only thing i can find wrong with it is that since its kinda old, it only goes up to the middle of the 4th season, right when they find out charlie has cancer. It has a lot of stuff like what bailey is thinking that i wouldnt have never guessed from the show. I'm glad i got it. I wouldnt have know what they were talking about though if i hadnt seen the actual episodes that the stuff was taked from. overall, it was a good book. i read it in one night, i couldnt put it down. it has some nice pics in it too.

I have always loved Scott Wolf. He has been my favorite actor for 3 years. I guess you could kind of say that he is my inspiration. His acting gets me through a day. I love Scott Wolf.

It's a great book. Great detail about his feelings/emotions that you don't see Bailey express on the show about certain topics. (ex: intervention, Owen's birthday party, car crash) If you don't watch Party of Five, don't buy the book. You'll be lost from the very first page! It doesn't describe the relationship between characters at all! Oh well, great book otherwise!

The guide is very detailed and informative. It tells step by step how to play each stage and how to obtain all the 007 moves. I highly recommend this guide to the serious Bond player.

Great companion, but not complete.......2004-08-13

You can always trust Prima when it comes to game guides, and you can still trust them. This guide has everything for someone playing through EoN for their first time. Maps that layout entire levels, pointing out important things like weapon pick ups and bond moments. And the walkthrough itself will get you through any level, single player and co-op. It isn't whats in the guide that made me shy of giving it five stars or calling it a must-buy, but what they left out. First off, there are three difficulty levels, operative, agent, and 00agent. this guide is for agent only. It points out armor locations and objectives for agent. It doesn't point out which objectives are left out in operative, or which armor locations aren't there in 00agent. Sometimes htere will be another person here or there on 00 that there isn't on agent, but it still gets left out. Another thing that's missing, a section on how to get the gold awards. If you cant quite get 450,000 points on the last mission, it will take more than the listed bond moments to get you there. Another problem is that there really isn't a guide for getting platinum medals on the levels. There are paragrpah long tips at the end of a mission walkthrough on how to get platinum, but no real guide. The largest problem I had with this guide was that it was either too vague or nonchalant about how to obtain the gold and platinum medals throughout the game, and basically left you guessing once you tried to unlock them. This guide is only good (but very good) for getting to the last level on agent, and ignores helping you unlocking the awards.

It's alright, but..........2004-03-02

This is not a bad guide at all, but first of all, it's a universal guide, covering all three consoles. This is fine, except that I prefer a guide tailored to my own system, so that instead of the guide saying, "press Action to...whatever," it says, "press X or Circle..."

Also, the guide assumes you'll play the game at the second difficulty level and doesn't account for the fact that some people, me included, play at the easy level at first. The guide is then very confusing, because it tells you to do stuff that the game doesn't want you to. There really should have been two sections, detailing the Easy and the Hard walkthroughs separately.

Though it can be tricky, the game itself is awesome. The guide on the other hand could have been better.

This is great! The guide offers the ultimate walk through of 007: everything or nothing! If you are having trouble locating an objective, or just want a basic overview of the game this is for you. There are sections on multiplayer strategy, and general sigle player stratgey. The guide has detailed maps of each level. If I was you I would get out and buy this guide and the game also because they are gonna go quick!

A Field Guide To 4th Generation Warfare.......2007-06-30

Would you go hiking without a map? Would you work on your car without a manual? Then why would you even think about going to the Middle East without this book? Poole once again sets the standard in the industry for explaining the tactics, history, and mindset of the Islamic Extremist. From military commander to field grunt to civilian contractor, if you're headed to a desert combat zone do yourself a favor and BUY this book! I also suggest you read this book with a highlighter in hand...but you may just end up highlighting everything. This book undoubtedly has saved lives and will save more in the future!

Al Queda explained.......2007-05-25

Once again H. John Poole has pulled aside the Middle East veil of mystery to show us how the Muslim militants go about their business. Known as the "War on Terror" aka "4th Generation warfare", radical Muslim militants have worked out the ways to challenge the West collectively, on - and off the battlefield. Thus far, their efforts have cost the U.S.of A., not only lives, but billions of dollars, sowing anxiety and terror. How have they accomplished this with slender resources? Against the most technologically advanced armed forces in the world? Poole tells us how.
The book is divided into three parts:
The initial part updates the reader on the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan to the summer of 2005. How the Muslim militants have survived and continue to succeed against coalition armed forces without tactical victory, hi-tech resources or heavy arms; all the while they suffer heavy casualties and continue to burn through the resources - and resolve of the West - are addressed.
The next part examines, through the lense of ancient oriental texts on the principles of warfare, the stratagems employed by the militants. These are the most illuminating chapters: now the daily events in Iraq and Afghanistan make sense if one understands the militants' operational philosophy. Poole's explanations of tactical actions clarifies how these militants are playing "the Game" against coalition forces. What makes no sense militarily in Western understanding of warfare are perfectly acceptable to furthering these militants' ends.
The final section's chapters provide approaches to dealing with "4th Generation Warfare" situations, which Western military forces are more and more wont to encounter. Many of Poole's recommendations reflect the U.S. Marines' experience with the Combined Action Program (CAP)used in Vietnam during the 1960s. Essentially, special Marine units operated with Vietnamese local forces at the village level to root out and undermine the Viet Cong insurgency. He contrasts this approach to the reliance on hi-tech and heavy fire power, the preferred operational mode of U.S. forces. Further, Poole (pp 278-294) describes the changes in tactical philosophy that must come about if U.S. ground forces are to prevail against their current enemy. This, to my mind, is the best part of the book.
Poole's views on training and tactics in the last chapter, come closer to dealing with military cultural reform than in his previous wotks. While he addresses these subjects in other books, these last pages in MILITANT TRICKS come the furthest to combining these previous discussions into a coherent whole which reflects the grunt's eye-level ground view.
Hopefully, the powers-that-be are reading his works - effecting the necessary changes.

A must read for depolying servicemembers.......2007-04-23

This book was kindly donated to my unit by the publishers when I was a Company Commander before I deployed. Everyone over here should read it. Regardless of how much money our government spends on high-tech equipment and contracts, until we gain a better understanding of our opponents sociological and theological motivations we will continue to waste a lot of our military resources. LTC Poole's emphasis on taking a humanistic approach and integrating our forces with the locals is sound, provided that the local forces are properly vetted and aren't infiltrated by insurgents.

Understanding OEF/OIF True Enemies.......2007-03-23

This is the best book I have read so far on where and who the real enemy is and who is behind and against the U.S. supporting democracy and the liberation of the people of Iraq.
Breaks down in detail who is Sunni and who is Shiite.
How they work and how they are fighting U.S. Forces together.
How the real enemy is Iran with many proxies to gain control of Iraq.
How the U.S. must change to deal with fighting in Irregular Warfare now and for decades to come.
How the enemy is capitalizing on U.S. democratically controlled Congress to gain victory.

Heading over to OIF II in a few months, active duty CDR O5 who will be working in support of the bravest of the brave (EOD Forces defeating IED's). This book was instrumental in developing a understanding of what is really going on.

I would recommend this book for all Officers and enlisted personnel heading to fight this fight from E1 up.

Good explanation of a confusing subject.......2006-07-14

The book gives a good acccount of the various Islamic militant factions and their interactions. The opinions seemed a bit "armchair general" and opinionated at times, but they made several good points. I'd recommend the book although it had the following drawbacks for me:
-The insertion of outside material to back up the author's words made for a sometimes disjointed read
-The sprinkling of "God (Christian) & country", stereotyping, etc. seemed unnecessary
-20% of the material was a repetition/reiteration of a particular point (not sure if this was to beef up the number of pages or to compensate for a shakey arguement)

This book is a good one to keep in your library. As is covers topics of gear design, manufactring and touches a bit on the failure mechanism of the gear.

The standard reference on gear engineering.......2006-08-18

One of my two favorite gear books (the other being Drago's Fubdamentals of Gear Design). The 1983 edition is thorough, comprehensive and very readable for a reference book. Surprisingly for an American book of that time, it covers the metric system and standards (ISO, etc.) used in Europe and elsewhere. While the technical standards used in the book have been updated/replaced, it is still current in many areas and lays a solid conceptual basis for gear design.

I was tempted to buy the 1994 edition, but I browsed through it and did not find significant additions--and the printing quality was poor (as other reviewers pointed out). Still buying either edition is a first basic step for those interested in gear design.

Dudley has also written other widely read books in the field like the 1954 edition of this book and the 1962 Gear Handbook (as editor).

Great book at its time.......2005-09-11

This book was probably the best you could buy for introducing gear technology in 1983 (and probably still is). The only problem is that it is scanned pages from the original so all pictures are poor, especially pictures of gear failures cant be copied. At some pages there are also small white dots that covers the text but they are not so many that you get disturbed by them.
If this book would have been a reprint of the original and not scanned it would have been a killer. I do wish for this book to be updated to modern standards.
Anyway, it is still worth the money and should not be missing from a gear designers bookshelf.

The printing quality is poor, try to find the 1984 original.......2004-12-21

The book contents might be excellent. I regreted to
buy the copy by CRC press. It seems to me that CRC press
photocopied the original 1984 version by McGraw-Hill.
The pictures looks terrible.

I recommend to purchase the copy by the other press.

Handbook Of Pratical Gear Design.......2000-06-10

Anyone who engineers or specifies gears or gear drives would benefit from this book. Information on the design and function of gears is found in this well thought out text book. This book (written 1983) is greatly expanded and updated from the original (1954) version that I read in 1973. At this time, Handbook of Practical Gear Design is not quite the state of the art in gear engineering it is an excellent resource. All types of gearing are discussed. Read all the articles completely because the last part of the articles usually has newer information. (for example: the article on Hunting Teeth on page 3.8.) This is one of the great books in gear engineering and I consider this book a basic source in gaining the knowledge of great gear design.

Pretty old books. First volume is just trig tables that your calculator will give you. Next two volumes have all the gear formulas, but not a lot of explanation on how to apply them.
