Citizen participation..........2003-09-12
This book covers a huge set of techniques for citizen participation, then analyzes data from some citizen participation processes. Scholarly, but readable.
Book Description
This comprehensive history of trade unions in the New Zealand printing industry provides an absorbing insight into a century and a half of new Zealand history. From the early 1860s, when the first typographical unions were formed in Dunedin and Wellington, to 1996, when printers and journalists amalgamated with the Engineers Union to form the country's largest private sector trade union (the New Zealand Engineering, Printing, and Manufacturing Union) it addresses a number of fascinating stories. Issues discussed include changing technology and the question of worker control of change and the preservation of workers' pay and conditions; divisions between different groups of workers in the workplace and at the bargaining table; the place of politically conservative trade unions in New Zealand's labor history; and the growing involvement of Maori and women in unionism.
Book Description
Detailed study of the musical evolution of the seminal and enduring cult band New Order-best known for mega hit "Blue Monday"-album-by-album, song-by-song. The book also covers Joy Division, the band's earlier incarnation, and related bands and solo projects. Timed to coincide with the release of the long-awaited New Order studio album and tour and the filming of the biopic of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis featuring Jude Law in the title role.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting book for the casual to moderate New Order fan.......2005-06-08
As a fan of New Order and their side projects I found this book to be a pretty interesting collection of details, reviews and anecdotes about Joy Division, New Order and their various outside work. I learned quite a bit about the back story behind the fall of Factory and the switch to London records that I did not know about. If you have not been a slavish fan of the bands who clips articles from the music press you'll find this pretty entertaining. For die hard fans who spend all their time on worldinmotion.net and neworderonline.com there is little new here that hasn't been hashed over 1000x in the forums.
It's a quick read and contains nuggets about their career most people don't even know about (Be Music & the influence of their manager Rob Gretton R.I.P). it will keep you busy this summer while waiting for the follow up album to Waiting For the Siren's Call (not mentioned in the book BTW) that's been hotly discussed among NO fans and confirmed by the band.

Fantastic.......2004-03-05
I thought this book was absolutely fantastic. I mean it was like KICK ASS!
A collection of magazine articles..........2000-12-29
This was okay, but I got it as a gift and would not purchase it myself. It is basically a collection of magazine articles and gets pretty redundant. It isn't authorized or endorsed by Oprah or her company, and looks to be a shallow collection of reiterations of the same things. If you love Oprah, you already know everything in this book :-).

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good but technology moves on fast .......2007-09-09
Really a good book for someone that knows next to nothing about PCs. Explains everything very simply. The proof will be when I buy things and try to put it all together, but that could be a wee while yet. Highly recommended!
Very Out Dated.......2007-09-08
No SLI a 256 Vid card in a Ultimate Gaming Machine ? If you are a 1st time builder this book might help with explanations of what does what and how it does it. But if you are looking to build a Gaming PC thats dx 10 ready to play games such as COD 4 and Crysis go with a recent Maximumpc release.
Teriffic GUIDE.......2007-05-19
I bought this book several months ago, and have since built a new computer that I am typing on right now. :) This book is VERY helpful in getting you familiar with computer terms, and knowing what does what. Also in telling you how to shop and buy your computer parts.
I have seen complaints saying that this book is outdated and other such things. Well, it is, but that doesn't take very long to do in the computer world. But that still does not lower the quality or helpfullness of the book. You still will learn what to look for in parts. Online forums are also a big help. This book does alot of step by step instructions. But you also have to use some common sense, and look some things up online yourself, because you will most likely not build the exact computer that they build in the book. If you have a flexible mind, can read instructions that come with what you buy, and have some common sense, you will do just fine!
The only thing about this book that I did not like was several spelling and punctuation errors. There were also one or two sentances in the book, that were not actual sentances. You could still tell what they were saying though. Has anyone making this book heard of "proof reading"?
My concluding thought: This book is a TERIFFIC guide, and I will recommend it to anybody. Just be flexible and know that if you actually build a computer, things will not be EXACTALLY the same as how it is in the book. But everything you need to know is in there.
Worth the Money.......2007-03-25
I used this book as a guide to build my gaming computer. With the technology changing and new items coming out so fast, it's impossible for any book to be current for more than a few months. So use this book only as a guide and search for the most up to date info you'll need to build your computer.
A Worthwhile Addition to the Computer Builder's Library.......2007-01-27
I got my first computer in 1998 and have been learning ever since. I just got done building my own from scratch (this is 2007) and this book was a tremendous help. For some reason creating a RAID floppy setup disk boggled my mind. I could get no clear idea of what exactly the floppy was supposed to contain. (In my case it consists of 8 loose files -- not sure if this is true for everybody. My new motherboard's manual didn't even clear it all up. This book helped a little.) I didn't need or want a gaming PC but this book teaches you things you need to know whatever you are building. But between this book, tech support at ECS (motherboard manufacturer), their manual (written by someone not too proficient in clear concise expression in English), and their writing a tech-support reply, I managed.
It's like I told them at tech support. Everybody writes about RAID configuration like everyone not born in a cave already has one RAID install under his belt at conception.
Anyhow, once you do it, it's not that bad. :-) Kinda fun even. :-) Man over machine.
I guess what I am trying to say about this book is that it is not a stand-alone manual to teach you how to build a computer. It must be a PART of your library, not the only book on your shelf.
One minor criticism: The authors put their page file on the SATA drives (the ones that contain the operating system). According to the XP Help section you should place it on a different physical drive than the OS. So, I created this partition on the RAID drives that was supposed to contain the pagefile and now it's useless. I decided to use it for "Safekeeping" files (password lists, templates, address books, and the like) instead.
Get this book, but don't trust it to do all your thinking for you. OK?

Customer Reviews:
Good for the AFAST.......2007-08-14
This review is for anyone taking the Army's AFAST exam. I'm not sure how good this book is for other exams.
There are two reasons I recommend this book for the Army's AFAST exam;
First of all, you need to really practice the Complex Movements section of the test. It seems to make or break most test takers and is very hard to understand if you are unfamiliar with it. This practice alone makes the book worth it.
Second, the Army AFAST exam isn't really a hard exam, however it's graphics are so poor it makes it a hard exam. Therefore, using this book to teach yourself how the exam expects you to recognize its poor graphics pays off really well during exam time.
For these two reasons, I recommend this book. It's not a great 'review' book, however it will teach you how to take the test...which can be just as important.
Good but incomplete for people who struggle in math.......2007-07-15
Arco's Military Flight Aptitude Tests study guide gives you a good overview of the subjects that you will be tested on. If you have a strong backround in basic physics and math, then you should be able to get by with this book. But if you need extra help relearning math and physics, then I would recomend buying Kaplans GRE study guide, since it will actually teach you the concepts (I stink at math, so I really needed a book that put the concepts in simpler terms, so that I could do well on the math word problems).
Arco's MFAT just has sample questions, but it does teach you some stuff about the flight material you will need to learn. So I recomend you buy it, because you not going to find any book that can teach you some of the unique flight (and natical if your joining the Navy) material that you will find in Arco's book. But if you need a math and physics update, then buy Kaplans GRE study guide.
Hope this helps and good luck.
Far from perfect, but much better than the Cliffs Notes version........2007-01-16
While there are many things wrong with this test prep book, it is much better than the Cliffs Notes MFAT prep book. The Spatial Apperception in this book is slightly different than the corresponding section on the ASTB, but it is much better than the same part of the cliffs book where most of the questions have incorrect answers and are poorly presented. Use this in conjunction with the marine ASTB gouge, and whatever other gouge you can find at the AirWarriors website. And be sure to cram on the math as it is the most important part for your OAR. I got 65 OAR, and 8,7,7 on my first try.
good book for navy test.......2007-01-13
This book is good, but the best study guide is the marine one you can find online. this book also works well for the afoqt, but remember that they changed the test. There is no electric maze.
Good Book across the board.......2006-11-13
I am a recent college grad and was interested in joining the Navy to fly planes. I had no clue on what becoming an officer meant or what to expect on the journey to get there. The book gives you practice test for each branch of the military (navy army air force etc) for their entrance exams. I was studying for the ASVAB. If you have a basic understanding of math and take some time (about a week) to familiarize yourself with the test you'll do fine. The book also gave valuable info on different types of flight paths to go, ex. pilot, NFO. All in all if I had to do it again I'd probably purchase this book. However I found out later in my search online that you can actually download this book. I forgot which site it was but a few minutes to find it will probably save you a little bit of money in the end.

Customer Reviews:
not good at all for AFAST.......2007-09-07
If you are studying for the AFAST DO NOT use this book. The instrument and complex movement practice sections contain numerous grievous errors. The AFAST does not contain high level math test like this book indicates, but instead mechanical concepts. It is amazing that this book was published in this apparently unedited and misinformed state. The book the Army gave me to review 15 minutes prior to testing was way better. No one in my family will every buy a cliffs test prep book again for any reason. If someone fails the test because of this crappy book I hope they sue so it gets pulled from the shelves and other don't fall victim.
I hope yuo read these reviews before purchasing.......2007-08-28
Just like everyone else on here I am so pissed off. I will NEVER purchase another book from this publisher. I dont care if its the best book inthe world. Absolutely no excuse. They should refund everyones money and do a massive recall. This should be against the law. Im so pissed right now that all I can really think about is swear words. Thanks for absolutely &^%^%$# nothing.
Too many errors!!!.......2007-03-10
This, like any other study guide, is good to understand what will be on the test, and how to interperet information. However, the practice tests are filled with errors. One question will have a picture and the correct answer. A few questions later, the same exact picture, but a different answer. I bought it for the AFAST, and the "complex movements" section is worse. Again, good for understanding how it works, but terrible practice tests. Two same questions, two different answers...
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-15
In preparation for the Army AFAST test I bought this book and two other study guides - I'm so glad I got the other study guides because the CliffsTestPrep is FILLED with errors. In going through one section of a sample test there were two questions with more then one possible answer (i.e. answer A was identical to answer C), and one question with NO correct answer. These types of errors are filled throughout the book; whoever was the editor on this project did a horrible job!
Not as good as the ARCO Military Flight Aptitude Test.......2007-01-03
I got this book as a supplement to the ARCO book, to try to assist me in taking the ASTB. The Cliff book was just like all the other cliff notes I have ever bought, a brief summary, and nothing much else. I would not recommend this book to help you take the test. The ARCO had a much better bank of test questions. Its not like the test is hard, its just the CliffNotes book isnt really helpful in preperation
Book Description
If you are serious about embarking on a promising career as a pilot in the armed forces, you must pass a rigorous military flight aptitude test to enter elite flight school programs. In addition to the 9-Step LearningExpress Test Preparation System, Military Flight Aptitude Test helps you gain an edge over other applicants by practicing key test topics, such as mechanical comprehension, spatial apperception, cycle orientation, instrument comprehension, aviation and nautical information, reading and verbal skills practice, math knowledge, electrical and hidden mazes and other visual material, table and chart reading, general science basics, data interpretation, and more! This complete test preparation guide for military flight aptitude tests includes practice questions with complete answer explanations, as well as three full-length sample tests for the AFOQT, AFAST, and ASTB.
Customer Reviews:
Harder Than It Seems.......2004-10-04
I used this book to study for the Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTB) for the Navy OCS program. I took the test twice and I found that the math and verbal, and the mechanical reasoning parts of the test were a lot harder than the book made it seem. The spacial apperception part was pretty much right on, and the naval and aviation terms were on one test easier, and on the other a lot more difficult. I would reccommend a different book and also picking up a pilot's manual to just get an idea about aviation, because thats what the ASTB is largely geared towards.
Not helpful at all.......2001-11-25
This books was no help at all for the Army AFAST test. Questions are answered incorrectly in the answer key (Key lists C as the correct answer to Problem X, then gives the explanation as to why B was the correct answer), the Complex Movements practice questions are completely different than those on the test, and some of the pictures in the Cyclic Orientation practice questions appear to be sequenced in the incorrect order.
If you want a good book for these tests, stick with the ARCO book.
Not quite.......2001-10-24
The book just doesn't do it for the Navy and Marine Corps Aviation Battery. Not enough examples and the Spatial Apperception section was pretty haggard.
Book Description
U.S. Air Force officer candidates, ROTC cadets, and others preparing to take military flight aptitude tests will find the information theyÂ're looking for in this manual. TheyÂ'll also find six full-length practice tests with answers and explanations for all questions. That total gives applicants more practice tests than any other flight aptitude manual on the market. The tests are as follows: two practice AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualifying Tests); two practice AFAST (Army Alternate Flight Aptitude Selection Tests); and two practice ASTB (Navy/Marine Corps/Coast Guard Aviation Selection Test Batteries). This manual also provides general descriptions and overviews of all three tests, plus practice and review questions in all test topics. The topics include language comprehension, mathematics, mechanical comprehension, aviation information, nautical information, general science, and specific mental skills such as block counting, finding hidden figures and complex movements, cyclic orientation, and spatial apperception. The author also gives practical advice on effective study techniques, how to find information resources, and physical preparation.

Disease And Empire: the Health of European Troops in the Conquest of Africa

Plagues and Peoples
ASIN: 0521389224 |
Book Description
From the beginning of European trade and conquest overseas, Europeans have known they died from the effect of the strange "climate." Later, they came to understand that it was disease, not climate, that killed, but the fact remained that every trading voyage, every military expedition beyond Europe, had its price in European lives lost. For European soldiers in the tropics at the beginning of the nineteenth century, this added cost in deaths from disease--the "relocation cost"--meant a death rate at least twice that of soldiers who stayed home. This book is partly a statistical exposition of the changing death rates of European Algeria, the British West Indies, and southern India--by cause of death from disease--set against the comparable figures for those who stayed at home in France or Great Britain. About two-thirds of the book is devoted to a discussion of what Europeans at the time thought about the possible causes of relocation costs and what they did to remedy them in actual medical practice in the colonies.
Book Description
Open Innovation describes an emergent model of innovation in which firms draw on research and development that may lie outside their own boundaries. In some cases, such as open source software, this research and development can take place in a non-proprietary manner. Henry Chesbrough and his collaborators investigate this phenomenon, linking the practice of innovation to the established body of innovation research, showing what's new and what's familiar in the process. Offering theoretical explanations for the use (and limits) of open innovation, the book examines the applicability of the concept, implications for the boundaries of firms, the potential of open innovation to prove successful, and implications for intellectual property policies and practices. The book will be key reading for academics, researchers, and graduate students of innovation and technology management.
