This book examines the influence of local public services on the economics of cities. The relationship between economic development and urbanization is indisputable; less clear, however, are the ways in which cities directly contribute to economic growth and employment creation. Current economic thinking holds that the ability of cities to create wealth depends on 'agglomeration economies;" that is, the geographic concentration of industries and people which enables economic actors to come together, interact, and become productive. However, this ability to promote productive interaction depends on several factors, one of which is the provision of local public services. The book argues that the quality of local services significantly influences the productivity of a city, and of its business firms. Inferior local services increase the cost of interaction, erode the effects of agglomeration, and diminish wealth-creation potential. This study attempts to assess the costs of inferior local public services to firms. Based on surveys conducted in five cities-Belo Horizonte (Brazil), Montreal (Canada), Puebla (Mexico), San José (Costa Rica), and San Salvador (El Salvador)-it examines the complex issues surrounding local service provision, and illustrates how inferior local services affect firms and, in turn, the ability of firms to contribute to wealth.

            Book Description

A great deal of economic success of Southeast Asian economies is attributed to privatisation. Through the mechanism of privatisation, these economies have successfully integrated themselves with dominant metropolitan capitalist countries. The underlying interlinkages have remained vital for the ASEAN miracle. The studies presented here are pointers to the fact that in the ASEAN countries, like anywhere else in the world, privatisation exercise could not prove itself to be unmixed blessing. It has given rise to many issues which the authors analyse. This book describes the privatisation experiences of five original ASEAN economies: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The present collection of studies is an assortment of both micro and macro aspects of privatisation in the ASEAN region. The privatisation experiences of these countries are studied from a series of interrelated perspectives, and various dimensions of privatisation, e.g. processes and modes, implications and effects, and contemporary issues and challenges, are elaborated with facts and figures. The relevant developments and associated issues are addressed in such a way that readers will be in a position to make a comparative analysis of the models of privatisation in these countries.

              Book Description

Over 800 cartoonists worldwide celebrated 24 Hour Comics Day this year, when cartoonists are challenged to try to create 24 pages of comics in 24 straight hours. Nat Gertler, founder of the day, sifted through the hundreds of submitted stories to find 24 gems, in a range of genres including humor, horror, western and autobiography. Some come from well-established comics creators like Zander Cannon (Top Ten, Replacement God) and Ben Avery (Imaginaries, The Hedge Knight), others come from people who have never created a comics story before. And for those who have not noticed the rise of the female cartoonists, half of the stories chosen for the book are from women, whether pros like Lea Hernandez (Hardy Boys, Cathedral Child) and Svetlana Chmakova (creator of Tokyopop's Dramacon) or brand new voices on the comics scene.

A wild feast for any fan of rock and roll and contemporary art, Stones by Kruger captures the essence of the British rockers on canvas. Considered the finest caricature painter in the world, Sebastian Kruger created a remarkable collection of surreal, humorous portraits of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman, Ron Wood, and Charlie Watts — inspired by a lengthy tour with the band. These masterfully rendered paintings depict the musicians in a variety of poses and situations, running the gamut from pensive and introspective to wild and raunchy. Includes 80 color illustrations.

Making use of newly-researched archival materials, this collection of original essays on wartime and post-war US foreign policy re-evaluates well-known crises and documents many less familiar aspects of the nation's mid-twentieth century conflicts. Leading diplomatic historians address familiar subjects from new angles. They offer new evidence about the risks run and the costs incurred in the prosecution of the Cold War, from Korea to the Caribbean. And they provide an up-to-date accounting of mid-twentieth century American diplomacy's global purposes and consequences.

Since MTV is a purveyor of primarily ahistorical and context-free broadcasting, it is easy for media aficionados (and certainly sophisticated business people) to turn their noses up at a book with this title. But in fact, this is a great book about the building of one of the world's most successful businesses. Replace the names of the various rock-stars with "respectable" commodities (like automobiles, chicken parts, bits or widgets), and there are great lessons to be learned about how innovative businesses generally, and innovative broadcasting specifically, are created in this millennial era. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Enthusiastic, if biased, look at the ascent of pop culture.......2000-08-02

In this slightly overdone docudrama, McGrath lays down the history of MTV, charting the evolution of the most significant cultural influence during the eighties, and explaining its surprising success.

Starting with the founders -- or "pioneers," as McGrath calls them -- we are given a closer look at the rebellious mentality which gave birth to MTV, the discouraging conditions posed by a fledgling cable television industry, and the cultural factors which explain the wild success of the MTV phenomenon. But for all of this, I've got to say that this book fell short in a number of places.

Rather than provide a factual account of the network's history and evolution, McGrath frequently displays a strong bias in his interpretation of 1980's culture, and his writing often becomes more creative than analytical, as he ascribes internal monologues to the various executives and celebrities involved in the MTV saga. The information which he provides is both interesting and well-supported, but he strays from the analytical angle far too often for this to be a strong resource text. Personally, I find the explanations of the mechanics of business, and specifically the media industry, to be quite interesting, and a good introduction to media economics.

While I found the story itself interesting, and admittedly exciting in some places, I think McGrath should have focused more closely on the facts, and less on the one-liners.

                  4 out of 5 stars A page-turner.......1999-06-23

I was not expecting this to be so insightful of a book about the television business. Unexpectedly insightful.

PHP is an open-source, HTML-embedded scripting language that allows you to handle tasks such as processing form input and working with databases directly in your HTML pages, rather than through CGI scripts.

The PHP Pocket Reference is both a handy introduction to PHP syntax and structure and a quick reference to the vast array of functions provided by PHP. This small book acts as a perfect tutorial for learning the basics of developing Web applications with PHP.

2 out of 5 stars Out of date & needing improvement.......2007-05-07

O'Reilly must sell a ton of these. Why not get a new author willing to do a good job of updating and improving. We all owe Lerdorf a lot for starting PHP in the first place. Having said that, O'Reilly needs to get an author who can update this and make it a useful reference. PHP is now on version 5.2 and this book is on version 4. It is nearly useless. I try to use this book from time to time, but never seem to find the information I need. Ie: Each function in the reference section needs at least two sentences of explanation, not a half sentence.

PHP needs a couple of good current reference books. Where are they?

                  1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book.......2006-10-14

What went wrong? I have many of the O'Reilly pocket references and I bought this one on the assumption it would measure up to the others. It doesn't.

Starts out promising but once it reaches page 34 the remainder is unorganize junk with no examples, no hint of what you would use it for.

Shame on O'Reilly for putting this out under their name; they have done their faithful customers who buy on their name's reputation a disservice.

You need a no stars category for this book!

2 out of 5 stars not really worth it.......2006-08-06

it seems like a handy thing and all but if you have an internet connection open when you code (presumably, since you're doing web development), the php.net documentation is much more helpful... not sure why anybody would use this. not even sure why i really bought this. i guess it looks good with all of the other little o'reilly guides that i own but it really was a waste of 5 dollars...

4 out of 5 stars Short Review of "PHP Pocket Reference", 2nd Edition.......2005-07-16

This is a very good small concise reference to PHP 4. Most of the book consists of a summary of the basics of the PHP language plus a function reference to about 1400 PHP functions. If you are in need of a handy reference to PHP 4, this pocket reference would be an excellent companion for "Programming PHP" (which is a fuller reference to PHP and is also published by O'Reilly).

I would not get this pocket reference unless you are already somewhat familiar with PHP and already own "Programming PHP" (or rough equivalent). This book, though well written, is not designed as an introduction to PHP. Oh, and you need to be OK with it not covering PHP 5.

If you want more detail, you could take a look at my somewhat longer review on the Oakland Perl Mongers site.

                  1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2004-07-07

Don't buy this book; you won't use it. The function explanations are rarely more than a sentence, and worst of all they are many times self-referential.

"string urlencode(string str) - URL-ecodes a string." The function name makes that clear, but what does that mean, if you don't already know? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of referring to a book for clarification?

"array pathinfo(string path) - Returns information about a certain string." Does that description clarify anything beyond the function name?

They should have trimmed out more functions and included more information about the most important ones. Sadly, this is also the book used in Dreamweaver MX 2004 for online help, which is frustrating.

                      Book Description

The second volume of A Cycle of the West, dealing with the tragic defeat of the Plains Indians, includes The Song of the Indian Wars (1925) and The Song of the Messiah (1935). The former tells of "the period of migration and the last great fight for the bison pastures between the invading white race and the Sioux, the Cheyenne, and the Arapahoe," while the latter concerns "the conquered people and the worldly end of the last great dream." It closes with the battle of Wounded Knee, ending Indian resistance on the Plains.

                      5 out of 5 stars Superb Technique.......2005-02-08

I had the good fortune to meet Dr. Neihardt when I was 15. We had been discussing poetry in my high school literature class, focusing on meaning in the poetry we read. I asked Dr. Neihardt what he considered the most important thing in writing poetry, expecting to hear something about philosophy or emotion or, at least, meaning. "Technique," he answered. As I look at his work I can see what he meant. His magnum opus, A Cycle of the West, is an example of the finest of the writing art. In keeping with his view that poetry is a vocal art and with his background of absorbing Homer in the Greek and Virgil in the Latin as a kid, he titles the five divisions of the work as songs: The Song of Three Friends, The Song of Hugh Glass, The song of Jed Smith, The Song of the Indian Wars, and The Song of the Messiah. Dr. Neihardt adopted a rule to apply throughout his work: the entire work would be in iambic pentameter with rhymed couplets. The entire work, properly termed an epic poem, required faithful daily application for thirty years of his life. On some of those days he could progress only five lines. He described to me how he often had to revise whole hard-won sections he thought he had gotten to be good but on the next day's review, weren't. One should not forget the difficult research Neihardt had to do, too. Travel in the early 1900s was very difficult, and Neihardt covered thousands of miles to get his material for the Cycle. All the advice one reads from Strunk and White, Barzun, and others is reflected in every sentence of the Cycle. Every word does all the work that can be gotten out of it. The reader is placed on scene in every sentence. Scene, description, and summary are subtly blended everywhere. The passage of time is also smoothly handled. Neihardt achieved mood through technique. He would often select dark and bright words as needed. He used every rhetorical tool. One will not find inert material anywhere, either. The extremely few adverbs and adjectives Neihardt allowed into his work are indispensable, and each one is there to take the place of many words. Beyond this, though, the Cycle fulfills its job of allowing for a captivating, smoothly flowing recital aloud. The reader will stumble on no clumsy wording. An example from the end of his Song of the Indian Wars, where Crazy Horse is taken off to be buried by his parents: "And when the morning heard the meadowlark/ The last great Sioux rode silently away./ Before the pony drag on which he lay/ An old man tottered. Bowed above the bier,/A little wrinkled woman kept the rear/ With not a sound and nothing in her eyes./ (white space) Who knows the crumbling summit where he lies/ Alone among the badlands? Kiotes prowl/ About it, and the voices of the owl/ Assume the day-long sorrow of the crows,/ These many grasses and these many snows." Powerful stuff! It's all that good. Little wonder it was selected for inclusion in The Best Books of the World from Homer to Hemingway.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding poetic review of the white race's journey west........1998-10-27

A true mystic's view, inspired by his subconscious, this rhymed couplet volume of five songs shows the process of the take over of the Native American lands. This recital of the facts and details of the westward expansion focuses on five distinct times, commencing with the Ashley-Henry expedition and culminating with the Native American "Ghost Dancers" attempt to return their lands to the people as a whole, rather than to individuals or companies.

Neihardt neither praises nor condemns the expansion itself but shows how it occurred, warts and all. While sympathetic to the Native American cause, Neihardt judges neither the white man nor the Plains folk.

Neihardt praises the beauty of the human form, spirit and tenacity. He sees the beauty underneath the blemishes that are all too obvious. He shows the power of perseverence in his song of Hugh Glass. He shows the love and jealousy of two men in the shooting of the cup. He shows the Native American subjugation through religion as no other writer could.

His simple rhyming couplets that extend for five full length books, reveal the mystical relationship Neihardt had not only with Native Americans but also with the Earth and all of her denizens.

From his early days as a Kansas farm boy to his later years as a professor of literature, Neihardt has sustained this objective but sympathetic view from the Native American's eyes.

Only John Gneisenau Neihardt could hear the songs from the Wind, the Earth, the Moon, the Sun, the Spirits of the Fathers and Grandfathers that went before and then place them on paper, for those who cared to listen, to hear them.

This compendium of information, data, insight and welt geist is not only accurate in detail but is also related in a gracious flowing poetry that, while beautiful on the page, also sings on the lips of the intuitive aloud reader.
