Book Description
In order for the ideal of international trade to become reality, customs procedures dating back centuries must be eliminated and replaced with modernized practices designed to foster cooperation and efficiency in world trade. The International Customs Modernization Process (ICMP), detailed in this remarkable book, will do just that. With the aid of modern technology and business practices, nations and industries will benefit through improved enforcement of customs, more streamlined trade of goods, and overall growth of economies. The ICMP is an 11 step process that begins by improving the fundamentals. It then outlines three enabling processes and concludes with implementation and integration of the process and a vision of the promised future.
Customer Reviews:
A "must read" book for Customs practioners and businessmen!.......1999-01-15
I served as the Commissioner of the U.S. Customs Service from 1993 until 1997 and was actively involved in efforts to modernize the organization, with the goal of making it the most efficient and effective customs administration in the world. I regret that this book was not available during my tenure as Commissioner. The book is a virtual road map that outlines in a clear, concise and organized manner the step-by-step approach that would, if properly followed, lead any Customs organization to world class status. The book is an absolute must read for anyone currently in a leadership position in a Customs administration anywhere in the world. But it is also very useful for anyone who has an interest in seeing products and services moved freely and quickly into and out of countries around the world with a minimum of red tape, but in a manner that is consistent with national and international law.

Book Description
Conceptually sophisticated and exceptionally musical, Harmonic Practice in Tonal Music provides a thorough treatment of harmony and voice-leading principles in tonal music. Taking a linear functional approach, Professor Gauldin uses clear explanations and outstanding musical examples to show students how individual chords function in the overall structure of a piece, explaining how both harmonic and melodic forces contribute to the development of musical ideas.
For the Second Edition, Professor Gauldin has undertaken a comprehensive revision that responds directly to the suggestions of instructors. The new text emphasizes fundamental concepts, using a more effective organization and simpler, more accessible language to bring the most important ideas and information to the foreground.
Customer Reviews:
This textbook is very unclear.......2006-03-29
As a student studying AP music theory in high school using this book, I do not recommend it. Aside from all of the inaccuracies and odd terms that Gauldin has seemingly made up on his own, there are many occurances of terms that he describes for paragraphs but doesn't define...ANYWHERE. On a humorous note, in the glossary in the back, the term arco (bowed notes on string instruments) is spelled acro. Don't buy this book; it is not clear or concise at all.
There are much better books.......2004-07-20
I was in Cambridge when, looking at Heffers, I met this book. I was preparing a Harmony course merging Schönberg with Kostka/Payne, and I was looking for something practical and rich of examples; so the title kept my attention. Then I was called outside in a hurry, and without thinking very much, I bought the volume. What a mistake! First of all it is full of errors: from real ones (a major sixth doesn't have 8 semitones) to typographical (almost all the headnotes are wrong). Moreover terms and rules are absolutely non-standard. And, as a cherry on the cake, when, in the appendix, he tries to explain some "Fundamentals of Acoustic, he reveals a great deal of ignorance, defining a logarithm base 10 (where he needed a logarithm base 2), confusing energy with amplitude, and giving vague explanations of the length of an instrument. Definitely, there are better books!
College Music Theory.......2004-04-27
This is the theory book my university uses for it's theory courses. We use it for Theory 1 through Theory 4 (2 years). I've loved this book with what I've studied this far. I do agree with those who have said you have to be ambitious to take on this book on your own. Our professors do well with their explanations and play the exerpts on piano (they use the pre-recorded examples when it's above their abilities). In combination with a good teachers, this book is awesome. I could personally sit in a theory class all day with this book, but then again, I'm a major music dork.
There are better theory texts out there..........2002-02-12
I am currently a TA at a university and have been forced to use this book for my class. Forced, mind you, is the operative word here. Of my own free will, I would never have chosen this book. Gauldin often uses terms that are not "standard" in the theory world and even gives an entirely new definition and usage for a term that IS standard. Trying to do suspensions the way Gauldin lays them out (especially in the accompanying workbook) is like doing a crossword puzzle. The student first has to figure out if things go up and down or sideways. I have seen more students unecessarily confused by this book.
Now, granted, another one of my issues with this book might simply be my own personal bias. I am not a Schenkerian. I have never seen the importance in reducing everything interesting in tonal music to I-V-I and mi-re-do. To this end, I have found much of this book completely useless. The harmony is introduced far too slowly with over-emphasis placed on voice-leading reductions rather than "real" music. I would suggest that anyone who actually wants to somewhat learn theory, especially those not in a classroom situation, look into something along the lines of the Kostka/Payne book. I also know one review stated the Gauldin text was vastly superior to the Piston/DeVoto. In that, I have to agree. Simply adding some actual musical examples makes this book a better choice than the Piston. However, I still do not recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn theory.
A Comprehensive Theory Text for Modern Students..........2001-07-08
I quite enjoy professor Gauldin's harmony text. It was comprehensive and yes, as the publisher's review states concise. Personally, I studied theory/harmony out of several different texts (Benjamin, et.al.; Siegmeister; Kostka; Piston) as an undergraduate and on my own time and I find Gauldin's to be one of the best I have come across. While in theory pedagogy class I was able to study and dissect over two dozen texts from various regions and time periods. "Harmonic Practice..." is a modern text which is great today for the modern student. The use of basic Schenker reductions is an excellent idea and one that helps the students realize linear aspects of the music that many past harmony texts either ignore or too briefly discuss. Gauldin gives a nice balance of both the vertical and linear aspects of music throughout this text (it reminds somewhat, although much better, of Elie Siegmeister's "Harmony & Melody"). The overall appearance of the book is very similar to many of the current high school texts that students use today. This is a comfortable approach for students coming into theory for the first time or with little background in the area. Many of the reviews I have read seem to be critical in areas they know little of. Yes, Gauldin presents the basics (scales, chords, etc.), but many, many undergraduate level texts do so in order for review. Also, many critics have discussed professor Gauldin's scale building on 5ths. While this is in the text it is not the primary focus on scale construction, merely a footnote (p. 27). Overall this is a very good theory text for undergrauates which could and eventually will use some improvements (the misprint in the bass of the second mm. in Ex. 10 p. 107). This book gives much insight into many aspects of beginning theory, basic Schenker principles, voice-leading, form (the excursions are a great idea), and analysis that many other books in this field often neglect. Like most popular theroy texts, "Harmonic Practice" is excellent for an undergrad program, so long as the students have a teacher with a strong foundation in theory. I highly recommend this text.

Customer Reviews:
Good anthropological study.......2006-02-28
This book is not a 90210 guide. It is a great anthropological study of the show phenomenon and it's impact on the female audience. It also investigates the typical issues that young women are concerned with, using the show as the vehicle for honest and unguarded conversation. It brings forward interesting points that every young feminist should be aware of. A great read for a 1990's woman who enjoyed the show and is interested in gender studies.
Not what I thought it would be.......2003-06-10
I am an avid fan of "Beverly Hills 90210," and I thought that this book would be a perfect combination of intellectuality and my love of pop culture. I was sadly mistaken.
This book nearly put me to sleep. Although I thought it was interesting to read scenes that I had viewed myself and read other people's reactions to them, I was quite bored by all of the technical reading in it. I figured it would be more analysis and study rather than just a presentation of the facts. I would definitely NOT recommend this as something that anyone should buy.
HOW COULD A SHOW HOLD SO WELL FOR TEN YEARS.......2000-05-24
THE BOOK EXPLAINS WELL ALL THE ISSUES AND CHARACTER BUILDING DURING YEARS OF THE SHOW. SOME OF THE CHAPTERS ARE HARD TO FINISH BECAUSE THEY GO IN DEEP THOUGHTS ABOUT WOMEN, AND IDENTITY MAKING IT SOUD LIKE A TEXT BOOK, BUT AFTER I FINISH THOSE CHAPTERS I RELAIZED HOW IMPORTANT THEY WERE IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE SUCESS OF THE SHOW, THE TECNIQUE OF THE WRITERS AND PRODUCERS OF THE SHOW. AS A SHOW BUSINESS LOVER AND WORKER I RECOMEND THE BOOK TO EVERY WOMAN AND TV PROFESSIONAL.

SORRY BRIAN - IF YOU HAD A MIND ABLE TO FUNCTION..........2000-04-17
... You would see that however poorly writen, this book is a GEM in a difficult area of collection. Anyone who has this books needs to be thrilled at its rarity, and taken by its clarity. This IS the capstone of my Twin Peaks collection. A great, rare find. Just because one pseudo-fan cannot find it does not mean it is not worth its weight in gold. You remind me today of a small mexican chihuahua.

Poorly written.......2000-02-18
I think if this author maybe had a proofreader to go over the work before it was published, it wouldn't be so aggravating to read it. Misspellings and bad grammar abound...the most unprofessional book I have ever read for that reason. On a good note, the episode synopses were nice to have, but you can get a lot of this info on the web nowadays anyway.

Book Description
ASP.NET in a Nutshell is a concise, one-volume reference to everything you need to make effective use of ASP.NET. An invaluable resource that goes beyond the published documentation to highlight little-known details, stress practical uses for particular features, and provide real-world examples that show how features can be used in a working application, ASP.NET in a Nutshell is the definitive guide for developers of both applications and web services. Updated for Visual Studio .NET 2003, the 2nd edition of this book includes fresh information on application and web service development, custom controls, data access, security, deployment, and error handling, new material on web application development for mobile devices, plus an overview of the class libraries. For developers who still use Microsoft's older ASP technology, this book also provides information for migrating to ASP.NET. The material in ASP.NET in a Nutshell is presented in three sections:
- A fast-paced introduction to ASP.NET that examines topics such as building ASP.NET applications, developing web services, creating custom controls and user controls for maximum code reuse, debugging and handling errors, understanding ASP.NET security, and configuring and deploying an ASP.NET application
- A detailed reference to the properties, methods, and events of the most frequently used ASP.NET classes which include the Page class and the new .NET classes, such as HttpApplicationState and HttpSessionState, which correspond to the intrinsic objects in classic ASP. Configuration settings in web.config are also documented
- A Quick Reference to the types (the classes, structures, interfaces, delegates, events, and enumerations) found in web-related namespaces to the .NET Framework Class Library.
Like other books in the "In a Nutshell" series, ASP.NET in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition, offers the facts, including critical background information, in a no-nonsense manner that users will refer to again and again. With its wealth of up-to-date information, ASP.NET in a Nutshell is a book that web developers will refer to again and again.
Customer Reviews:
Fairly good structure; Mostly for VB.NET programmers.......2004-10-01
I concur with other reviewers on the following points:
1) The organization is good and focuses strictly on the relevant web classes in .NET.
2) The documentation, however, is more or less a repeat of ASP.NET information from MSDN. In a lot of O'Reilly Nutshell books, the authors typically add more insight to the classes they cover that the official documentation does not. With this book, I really did not get that impression.
If you need an offline version of the MSDN documentation, this is great. Another detraction is that the book does not come with a documentation add-in CD like the other .NET in a Nutshell books.
3) The most egregious fault with this book is that the authors do NOT tell you that the book is mostly in VB.NET syntax. I'm trying to learn C# and the book's latter parts is all VB.NET. I really wish the authors were upfront about this, so I could save myself some money. *sigh*
Future ASP.NET Authors: If you're going to write about ASP.NET, please specify, somewhere on the cover or in the introduction, the language you will be using for examples.
C# programmers may be better off reading other ASP.NET books, which usually are in C# (or at least tell you upfront which language is being used).
Poorly planned, I don't know who this book is for.......2004-08-07
The description of this book says it's for ASP developers transitioning to ASP.NET. I have worked with ASP for over a year, and this book was pretty much useless. The only redeeming factor was that I was able to get it from my local library, so I found out before it cost me any cash. The first part of the book delves into topics with zero explanation, and very little code, so you don't have a chance to get your feet wet with actual code, and the topics are dull and dry. The last portion of the book looks like it would be a nice reference, but honestly, why would you buy a book like this for a reference? Isn't that what the 'net is for?
Two thumbs down. I'm working through a Sam's teach yourself in 21 days book and it is significantly better for anyone transitioning from classic ASP or learning ASP.NET from scratch,
O'Reilly at it's best.......2004-03-02
I've been reading O'Reilly since the days of the tiny fifty page staple-bound brown Nutshell books that covered shell commands and the first version of Perl. This book is that has taken that same approach to data condensation and applied it to everything you need to know about ASP.NET. And extend they have at almost a thousand pages it is far heavier than the original books, but that doesn't make it any less worthwhile.
The first section covers all of the conceptual introductions to the topics, .NET controls, web services, configuration and security and all of the basics. The second section covers each section of the class library in a concise and consistent form that make it so much easier to grab for the book before you even press F1 to bring up the MSDN. Where necessary they include code fragments to demonstrate the point along with the explanatory text but it is never overblown or unnecessary.
This isn't light bedtime reading but it is an invaluable reference to sit next to the keyboard of any ASP.NET programmer.
No CD with VS add-in.......2003-11-06
Just bought the 2nd edition and I was looking forward to the CD with the Visual Studio .Net doc'n plug-in, but when I received the book it didn't have the CD. I called O'Reilly and customer support told me that they had decided not to include the CD, and Amazon just has an old image of the cover (O'Reilly has the "old" cover image too then!).
I had installed the add-in for other O'Reilly nutshell books (ADO.Net and Windows Forms) and found them to be useful, and thus I was disappointed that this book is not including the CD. Perhaps O'Reilly is planning to sell a plug-in for all of the FCL, and that is why the CD was pulled...
I buy a lot of books this one is one of the best.......2003-06-25
I really liked this book and its format. Perhaps it was just me but everytime I was looking for a particular solution I found it quickly. The book unlike some other nutshell books actaully does a very very good job of explaining the concepts as you code which is exactly the way I like to work.
Book Description
A sweeping and dramatic history of the last half century of conflict in the Middle East from an award-winning journalist who has covered the region for over thirty years, The Great War for Civilisation unflinchingly chronicles the tragedy of the region from the Algerian Civil War to the Iranian Revolution; from the American hostage crisis in Beirut to the Iran-Iraq War; from the 1991 Gulf War to the American invasion of Iraq in 2003. A book of searing drama as well as lucid, incisive analysis, The Great War for Civilisation is a work of major importance for today's world.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, honest and shocking.......2007-10-07
The book "The great war for civilisation", by Robert Fisk, is wonderful, mostly for its vivid and honest telling of the history the author has lived in thr last 40 years.
Even not having finished its reading (it's a 1,100 pages book!), I can see the author does not leaves "stone on stone" (translated from a Portuguese sentence). He show how ignorant people of developed countries can be (to make a monument in Vincennes, indiana, USA, to USS Vincennes, which blowed up a civil plane, killing 290 people, is terrible!), and how dishonest governments like Reagan's and Thatcher's were. Please, divulge this book!
A Great Book for Civilisation.......2007-10-06
It's hard to exaggerate when trying to accord sufficient praise for this great book. As a pure work of journalistic reportage it seems impossible to beat, let alone come near to its level of sincerity, humanity and scope. I don't know how Mr. Fisk was able to collate and make such sense of so much material, and survive the ordeal.
Whatever one's own proclivities may be in the world of politics and religion, I don't think anyone could quarrel with the author's many observations, which are so clearly animated by an overriding sense of outrage at the callous and sensless brutality which he has so often witnessed in person in the countries where he has been a reporter.
He tries his best to be impartial, and indeed it is virtually impossible to know where the truth lies in a world of spin and manipulation. However, he clearly shows a penchant for the Muslim argument in the Middle East, and certainly there must be a lot to be said in his favour, even if he is not always wholly convincing.
This, however, is but a quibble compared with the might and majesty of this splendid book, which I would recommend anyone who is in any way concerned with the Arab world to read, and learn from.
Detailed and well-written account.......2007-10-03
Fisk's narrative pulls no punches, and does a superb job of recounting events ranging from the Iran-Iraq War to the Armenian genocide the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan to the Palestinian Israeli conflict to the current War in Iraq -- as well as many other events relevant to the contemporary Middle East (and U.S. foreign policy in the region).
I found the account to be depressing at times, but for those who are looking for a thought-provoking, and engaging narrative this is a great place to start. No easy answers, and plenty of information to digest. The best kind of reading.
A Must Read.......2007-09-02
I read every word in this book. At first I was skeptical that it could all be true, but on completion I believe it is. I highly recommend this book to all.
It is an excellent way to learn just how big a mistake was made by the US and GB in trying to overthrow the goverment in Iraq and establish a puppet democracy.
grat book, must read if u wanna learn about the middle east.......2007-08-29
here is a writer who lived in the middle east, who walked the streets and breathed the air, who talked to all the big heads and saw all the battles...he is not your typical expert who appear on CNN/Fox News... he has in-depth knowledge, i wish alan dershowitz can learn from him

A "reader friendly" analytical survey and presentation.......2003-08-10
Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, And The Struggle For Racial Uplift by Jacqueline M. Moore (Associate Professor of History at Austin College, Sherman, Texas) is an informed and informative depiction of two remarkable and quiet different men who helped shape Black American history. Placing each man's work in historical context, and studying the debate conflict of ideas that both had and alternatives to either one's point of view, Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, And The Struggle For Racial Uplift is an intelligently written, scholarly, evenhanded, and "reader friendly" analytical survey and presentation which is strongly recommended for students of Black Studies, as well as non-specialist general readers with an interest in the contributions of Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois to American society and culture.

Book Description
A major concern among ecologists in and outside the ASEAN region is the degradation of the environment, and the overexploitation of freshwater and marine resources. There is as yet no indication that freshwater and marine resources are being managed on a sustainable basis, and loss of wetlands, whether freshwater swamps or mangrove swamps, is a major problem in the ASEAN region. Reclamation of mangrove swamps for aquaculture and agriculture seems to be a continuous activity here and the status of marine parks should also be examined in the light of recent resort development acitivities on small islands.
This volume contains numerous recommendations for the promotion of ecological studies and regional cooperation in marine, freshwater ecology and conservation, with special emphasis on the common water masses like the Strait of Malacca, Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea.
