Horribly Mis-titled.......2003-03-18

The title does not reflect the book's subject. Rather than treating its alleged topic, modern soldering, it attempts to be an everything book for technicians.

In soldering, your first indication that you've made a good solder joint is the visual inspection. With a book on this topic, I'd expect at least some pictures of good and bad solder joint examples, and photos of the various types of joints and packages the technician may encounter. But, the few graphics are limited to schematics of audio amplifiers and also to primitive line drawings of a few chip packages.

I definitely do not recommend this book for soldering, and there are excellent books on fundamental electronics that are so much better than what's presented here. The publisher should have limited the book's scope and required a better presentation.

The reason I bought this book is because I'm writing a seminar to help local praise leaders and bands to improve their worship skills. I have several books on praise and worship and have attended several seminars but none compares like this one in practical concepts and examples. Where other books talk about Bible worship models and the theology of praise and worship, this book gets knee deep in the details of planning, running and managing a Worship Band. It includes practical concepts like how should guitars/keyboards voice their chords, how to build a music repertoire, modulations, how to get the singers to sing right, how to plan the practice to get the most out of it, etc.
In short, this book is nothing but practical concepts and examples of what it takes (musically) to manage a Praise Band... I LOVE IT

The term "Cold War" has long been associated with the "red menace" of communism at home and abroad. Yet as Lee Bernstein shows in this illuminating study, during the 1950s the threat posed by organized crime preoccupied Americans at least as much as the fear of communist subversion. At the beginning of the decade, the televised hearings of Senator Estes Kefauver's crime committee, focusing on colorful mob figures such as Lucky Luciano and Frank Costello, attracted far more attention than the spy trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. In the years that followed, public concern about gangsters and racketeering continued unabated, even after the anticommunist fever of McCarthyism had begun to subside.

Drawing on a broad range of evidence, from government records to films, television shows, and pulp novels, Bernstein explains how the campaign against organized crime, like the crusade against communism, reflected deep social and political anxieties. Just as the inquisitions of Senator McCarthy fed on popular fears of international conspiracy and alien infiltration, the anticrime investigations of the 1950s raised the specter of a foreign-based criminal cartel-- the Sicilian Mafia --preying on a vulnerable American public. In both cases, the association of the foreign-born with criminal or un-American activity led to the creation of state and local citizens committees and to calls for new restrictions on immigration. Labor unions also came under attack, particularly after the McClellan Committee and its chief counsel, Robert F. Kennedy, claimed to have found a link between the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, led by Jimmy Hoffa, and the Mafia.

As Bernstein points out, despite significant changes in the way organized crime actually operated, and despite repeated protests from Italian Americans, the popular image of the sinister gangster persisted, because it served a more profound need. In an era marked by widespread uncertainty and rapid social change, the fight against a common enemy, real or imagined, helped forge a Cold War consensus across shifting lines of race, class, and ethnicity by redefining what it meant to be an American.

Iron Chef is the most ingenious TV show ever created, well, the REAL original IC show, at any rate.

The over-the top cheesy quality, the bad-English dubbing, the dumb air-head actresses(who sometimes come up with surprising smart comments); the exotic ingredients, and of course--the challenges. The stuff that no normal person would ever cook, or dream of touching on his dinner plate.
The combination of sports arena quality and the sideshow of Prices Right, equals=valuable hours of your life spent on watching TV!

the book is very in depth, though not quite a "cook" book, the only true thing it lacks it the statistical point. Who won the battles, etc.

I am very disappointed in Food Network for not continuing to buy more Iron Chef shows and or continuing to show the reruns; and not to make them into DVDs....instead they're being despots and forcing us to watch that horrible horrible horrible mutant child that came out of that so called "chef".
Yet again, an original anime/comedy/whatever show is ruined...just like how they mangled Godzilla. the "Other Thing" show lacks the corny flavor, the second commentator (Fuki-San was awesome), the REAL chairman, a REAL Chef, REAL ingredients; Fun challengers, (ok, Ming Tsai was funny, but that's it);my respect for Ming grew after watching that only good episode...he was funny, relaxed, self-assured and he kicked Flay's butt!!
awful musical score (sure the soundtrack of the ONLY incarnation of IC was from.....movie, Backdraft), pathetic judges (they ALL annoy me, for some reason).

watching the "OTher Thing" gives me a stomach ache, a headache....and I keep rambling.

SCOUR THE EARTH for lost videos/tapes/bootlegs of the ONLY IRON CHEF. If you're a true fan, don't even bother watching "Other Thing".

Die-hard Iron Chef fan's souvenier.......2006-07-20

This is one of the few but worthwhile memento's of the now defunct TV series, Iron Chef. While some fans are disappointed that there are few recipes, the book is about the show and the people. Interviews abound from not only the Iron Chef, but the cast and crew as well. There is even a statistics chart in the back detailing the wins and losses of Iron Chef battles. If you still love Iron Chef and want something memorable, this is the book.

A Magnificent Book for Fans.......2005-09-09

If you have ever had anything more than a passing interest with Iron Chef before, this is certainly a book worth picking up. The book itself is packed with gorgeous photos, plenty of interviews, and a staggering amount of information about the show itself, particular episodes, and even recipes. Granted, most people won't necessarily be using this book as a typical cookbook, but the added recipes just feel like a bonus on top of an already excellent book.

All in all, I was delightfully satisfied with this gem. Also, if you're looking for a bargain and are not sure about the book itself as far as quality is concerned, I highly suggest taking a look at the Used section here at Amazon. I picked up my copy that way for a fantastic $1.98 last year for pristine quality and even now the prices for the Used copies are in the same ballpark.

good comprehensive overview of the series.......2005-03-04

This is a rather nice little collector's item for fans of the show and even those who are just simply curious about its hype. It provides a fairly informative history of the show, nice illustrations throughout, recipes, "battle" ratings, and even restaurant location and information for selected chefs on the show.
The best sections were the personal interviews from various contributors to the show.

If you get one Bryce book, this is the one. I didn't really get much use out of the program until this one. It's all dog-eared and covered with sticky-notes now. It clarifies a lot of things and brings up helpful stuff not even included in the manual. You can read through or bounce around looking for topics you need right away.

Susan Kitchens sets the bar.......2005-09-07

I have been a multimedia producer for over 20 years, and this is easily the best in depth, "Beyond the basics" software book I have ever read. Susan Kitchens writting is informative and a pleasure to read. Even though she never got a chance to write the 5.0 version, everything in this book still applies to the current version. As another reviewer so aptly put it, this is the "Bible" for Byce users. I have read other books since this one, and they were abysmal! Trust all the good ratings of this book. I only wish Mrs. Kitchens was writting ALL 3D software books! My copy of this book is well-worn and dog eared! If you own any version of Bryce 4-> you must own this. The fact that it is in it's 3rd addition should tell you all you need!

Exellent Book ... its a bible!.......2002-09-01

This is a wealth of information and the content is applicable to new users who want to improve their skills or old-timers who want to add to their skills or have a great reference.

As far as third-party books about software goes, this book is well worth the purchase.

As far as reviews go, if you use Bryce then this book is your next purchase. I can't imagine anyone who loves the software would not find this the only book they need in order to get the best results with Bryce.

Delayed over and over to the point of obsolescence.......2002-08-21

I had this book preordered for about two years before it finally came out AFTER Bryce 5 shipped. You're better off getting a cheap copy of Real World Bryce 3 and waiting for Susan to put out RW Bryce 5... after Bryce 6 ships.

A big thumbs down for being out of date due to extreme author lag.

This book is amazing. It incorporates all aspects of the Bryce experience including terrain, sky, rainbows, haze, lighting, lattices, and more. I have Bryce 5, but this is still a great companion. Metaballs and trees (the big differences from 4 to 5) are pretty self-explanatory. If you're thinking about getting this..

STOP!!!!

Just get it.
