I love Dave Barry and I loved this book! Intelligent and witty. Quirky and unusual. Great illustrations too.
Book Description
Life changed for Michael Francis at the age of 21 when Paul McCartney walked into his father's boxing gym to watch his friend preparing for a fight. Paul hired Michael as his security guard, beginning a thirty-year music business career in which he worked with such legendary names as Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, The Osmonds, Sheena Easton, Frank Sinatra, Bon Jovi, Cher, and Kiss. As tour manager, Michael was responsible for every aspect of their safety and their comfort, from making sure they were not mobbed on stage to making sure they got paid. To some of them he became close. He was best man at Jon Bon Jovi's wedding, and provided personal security for Cher at her Malibu home. He shared their wildest excesses, their highs and their lows; he saw their fears, and all too often, their loneliness and paranoia. Sometimes hilarious, frequently shocking, always perceptive, Star Man is the outrageous, uncompromising, and brutally honest story of one man's life with the biggest stars of rock.

There really weren't any interesting chapters to this book, I look at it as "tabloid crap." What happened to the privacy agreement between this "security man" and the ones he protected? Not much for "protection" if he can't wait to blab about his former clients. There is nothing in this book that you probably haven't imagined or read in the tabloids so save your money and just look for fan websites.

Book Description
This volume [is] loaded with fresh and useful insights. Highly recommended.
- Choice
This book was written to help the growing number of students whom traditional methods don't reach. Compositionists can either continue to hold the high ground against the influences of popular culture or, as Diane Penrod's book argues, accommodate it creatively, turning its pervasiveness in film, videos, cyberspace, and language itself into engaging, immediately useful writing instruction.
The fourteen essays in this anthology address a host of issues: What is cultural studies and how does it benefit composition? What can we do with it? How does this approach help students think and write creatively? The first seven essays present perspectives on the intersection of pop culture with politics. In the four essays that follow, the authors challenge the concept of interdisciplinarity in the writing classroom through the use of computers and other visual and aural technologies. The final essays discuss the impact of the language of the university on our students' decisions. In each of these essays, the classroom becomes a site where changes in students' thinking and writing take place.

Britcoms for Beginners.......2004-01-03
I love britcoms, and British television in general, as much as anyone, but this book is lacking in one key are: no episode guide to any of the series! As far as I'm concerned, this should be the most important part of a book like this, and its omission is a big flaw. Without episode guides, it's simply a overview of Britcoms for beginners. It would only require one sentence for each episode and since some of the series are only 12 or 20 episodes it wouldn't have taken up much space. Still, if you just want a simple overview of Britcoms and a bit of trivia, it's ok.
Good overall view, not too specific.......2003-03-06
This will tell you about a bunch of them, and some you've never heard of, but not too much on one program. If you're just getting into Britcoms, this is a good primer that will introduce you to the genre that so many of us think is far superior to the drivel on American TV!
Britcom-hahahahahahaha!.......2003-01-29
There's quite a bit of interesting trivia and information in the booklet. It mentions the noteworthy shows of the 70s, 80s, and the 90s. If you want to blend in England or watch popular British telly, this is the book to get. Also the book notes some useful information on how it differs from American television, so I reckon that this might be a good read for students of television.
An excellent book for the Anglophiles among us.......2002-02-01
It's almost inarguable that Britain has more than its share of classic sitcoms: Are You Being Served?, The Good Life (Good Neighbors to Americans), To the Manor Born, Fawlty Towers, Yes, Minister, Black Adder, Red Dwarf, Absolutely Fabulous . . . the list goes on and on.
This book is a splendid overview of most of these that have made it to America. Each one gets several pages of text and a few photographs. The text provides an overview of the series concept, how it came about, and usually an episode summary or two to give one a flavor of the series. I found that I learned a little bit about the series I had seen and had some fond memories brought back. I also felt that I got a good idea of what the unfamiliar series were like.
An excellent book for the Anglophiles among us.
best of britcoms.......2001-12-30
i love british comedy..this book is well described and has been loaned many times..a keeper.

Customer Reviews:
Very concise writing.......2006-08-25
I've had the distinct pleasure of being taught by Ms. Casteel for SQL. I later used this book on my own to learn PL/SQL and it is the closest text you will get to having her actually sitting in her room. If you want examples that follow a specific path to building one concept upon another. This textbook is implemented in my local Authorized Oracle Academic Initiative Center so you know you will be getting quality instruction in PL?SQL with this book. I think it beats OraclePress hands down for its accuracy and in-depth description of each concept. Get this book if you ever thought the other publishers tend to be too vague in conveying PL/SQL to you. Worth the money.
Information from the Author.......2004-01-19
This is a text book - this book is written specifically for college classes. Any books you see that are published by Course Technology are text books.
This book is written in a format that user's with only SQL knowledge and are brand new to PL/SQL can learn the fundamentals of PL/SQL programming. The text covers all the concepts for the Oracle9i PL/SQL program units certification exam. Every chapter contains hands-on exercises to illustrate each concept. The data files for the book can be downloaded from the publishers web site. Chapters covering dynamic SQL and programming with Oracle object technology is also included.
Thanks for your interest!
Reads like a textbook.......2003-10-09
This book is a text book. It has good exercises to learn from. It is a little difficult to use as a reference book. It could use some more tables and examples.

Superbly Well Written.......2005-05-26
Bulusu Lakshman gets a standing ovation for a brillantly written book. If your PL/SQL skills lag behind Oracle 9i, then this book will bring you up to date with clearly written text and excellent examples.
It should really be billed as more of an advanced text on PL/SQL, as the beginner is likely to have a difficult time if Bulusu's work is his first exposure to PL/SQL.
However, for the veteran PL/SQL developer who does not know reference cursors, cursor expressions, bulk binding, dynamic SQL, etc., this is the book to lead you to clear understanding.
Kudos to Bulusu Lakshman.
One of the best books I have ever read.......2004-04-28
This book really makes PL/SQL concepts very clear. I was actully refreshing my PL/SQL concepts after 3 years and this book was very helpful to me. The way each and every topic is presented in here left no doubt about that topic in my mind. This book is worth reading even for them who are new to PL/SQL. All the topics starting from Cursors, Packages, Stored Procedures, Functions, Triggers, Exceptions....etc are presented in the most conceptual and clear format.
Some nuances.......2003-11-21
I've just finished the first 100 pages of the book, so my views are definitely incomplete. Nevertheless, I would like to share some of my feelings toward this book:
1. Many code fragments are repeated unnecessarily, making the book a bit too thick (around 670 pages)
2. In avergage, I think, every page contains a "Tip" or "Caution" box, which I think should tell you some important insights from the author. However, most of the tips are as simple as "Never fetch from a cursor before opening it" or "Don't fetch from an already closed cursor". Maybe I'm too picky, but it's really annoying (and time-consuming) to read so many plain-simple tips.
3. The formatting of code is terrible. Although code formatting is a personl style issue, I think the author/formatter should at least make sure the parenthesis are easily identified, and each "successive" indentations are of the same length (say, each level of identation = 3 spaces). But this book fails to do so.
On the other hand, as far as I've read, the content is mostly correct, and the code fragments run as expected.
One of the better books among its peers.......2003-11-09
I like the organization of this book as well as its focus on Oracle 9i's new PL/SQL functionality. If you have prior experience with PL/SQL and need to get up to speed with the latest features quickly, this is the right book for you. I like the coverage on Native Dynamic SQL, Bulk Binds, and Object Relational features. The sample code is very helpful to demo the new language syntax. To me this book has been serving as a handy reference as I code for Oracle 9i for the first time.
Book Description
Tactics of the Crescent Moon comes none too soon for deployed U.S. service personnel. Little, if any, of their battlefield intelligence has been tactically interpreted. U.S. analysts are generally more interested in the enemy's strategic or technological capabilities. Even if those analysts did want to tactically assess the information, most lack the infantry and historical background to do so. This book fills that void. It revealsfor the first time in any detailthe most common small-unit maneuvers of the Iraqi and Afghan resistance fighters. Its author is a retired infantryman and recognized authority on guerrilla warfare. He has traveled the world extensively and still trains active-duty U.S. units.
Tactics of the Crescent Moon could save many lives (if not turn the tide of war) in the Middle East. It is a heavily researched, well-illustrated, and spell-binding account of how Muslim militants fight. While the book delves mainly into their tactical method, it also uncovers their cultural orientation. This nail-biting nonfiction covers events as recent as 15 September 2004.
Customer Reviews:
Understand what we're up against.......2007-02-27
If you want to truly understand how difficult it is to fight and win in the Middle East, then this book is required reading. Far too often we get watered-down information out of the press and on the Internet but the tactics of our Eastern adversaries go unmentioned. We know of suicide bombs, but where did this tactic originate? Which group in the Middle East is the most proficient at close-range combat? Where does Al Qaeda excel and what is the role of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard? Are Sunni and Shia groups always adversaries, or will they work together when faced with a common enemy?
This book gives countless examples of diffent tactics in different areas of the world from Afghanistan to Chechnya to the Levant. It illustrates the strengths of our adversaries and addresses our own weaknesses as a "Western" army. Finally, Poole makes recommendations on how we can win this fight through better light infantry tactics and restrained use of preparatory fire and air power.
It is in my opinion the best book yet on this "4th Generation" warfare. It is an outstanding read and will make you an expert amongst your friends when discussing the current state of military affairs in the Middle East.
After reading this book I sent it to my old ROTC school.......2006-11-28
I would highly encourage any person who is Battalion staff or lower to read this book. All Army and Marine personnel should read this book on the jet flying them to Iraq or Afghanistan. This book will give a typical soldier or marine a good snap shot of how the Eastern combat mind thinks. Also, unlike much propaganda to the contrary, the Islamic soldiers fight using Eastern techniques. There is more hand-to-hand fighting than in the past. American's just can't call in their massive fire support because the targets may not be easy to hit.
This book is great for privates, sergeants, lieutenants, and captains. I don't know if the advice will be taken if it's read at the level of battalion or above. That is where the "rubber no longer meets the road". The staff disconnect from the soldiers begins.
For all war fighters this book is a must read. All ROTC departments, Marine, and Army infantry should have this book as required reading.
A must read for those who leave the wire.......2006-11-21
During seven months in Falluja in 2005 I spent approximately 150 days in the city. The history alone in this book showed us just how much we may have been underestimating our enemies, and that if they followed their classical influences they could have done much more damage.
The history is priceless dating back to influences of the Samarai and how it came to bring the original Middle Eastern assassins, and how today's suicide bombers are like those in the past, only they have explosives instead of knives, and do not need as much skill.
John Poole had spent close to 30 years in the Marine Corps leading men as both a gunnery sergeant (when enlisted) and a Lt Colonel (when commissioned). He saw Vietnam first hand, and left feeling that he could have done more for the men he'd led. Although the officers that are in charge of teaching battle field skills are not fast to accept his methods the men on the ground who deal with the enemies in the streets of Iraqi cities know he is right.
Timely and practical.......2006-11-10
As a retired military officer, I think highly of Poole's books, including this one - he provides practical information that could save lives if they were required reading for our troops being sent to Iraq and Afghanistan.
All warfighters should read this.......2006-09-15
This book should be read by a variety of folks that desire to understand even a little bit more about what is happening and happening to US in the middle east. It is not a book that spends countless pages complaining about the state of union. This book will enable the tip of the spear as we are so fond of referring to our fighting forces, concise and credible information with regard to the mindset of their opposing forces. I have been told over and over, that you cannot defeat an opponent unless you understand how he/she thinks. It does shed some light on how the military-industrial complex is steering the people of many countries wrong by proposing extensive, expensive weapon systems that separate the men from the battle and advertise a zero loss of life war for our side. (Both sides should just throw rocks, it'll be simpler) And above all it mentions the one issue that is generating higher and higher turnover rates, ARMCHAIR war fighters, and the military personnel system, that rewards compliance and not innovation, that condones individualist and fails to properly reward teamwork. Battles should be fought from front to back and not the reverse as we are doing. I recommend this book to all, and not just to those in uniform.

Book Description
Izzy's Fire: Finding Humanity in the Holocaust tells the harrowing yet hope-filled true story of five Lithuanian Jewish families during the Holocaust who escaped Kovno Ghetto and were ultimately hidden -- and saved -- by a Catholic farm family. All 13 Jews ended up living in a 9'x12'x4' underground hole as World War II raged around them. Some lived underground for about seven months.
Beasley draws from personal interviews, research and numerous memoirs, including extensive memoirs from Israel "Izzy" Ipson, who helped his family escape from Kovno Ghetto, one of the most notorious killing fields for Jews in Lithuania. The Ipps, as they were known then, relocated to Richmond following their liberation and later changed their name to Ipson. The story has been re-created at the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond, Virginia.
Dr. Michael Berenbaum, project director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (1988-1993) and author of The World Must Know: The History of the Holocaust as Told in the United States Memorial Holocaust Museum, says, "Izzy's Fire is filled with the passion of one woman determined to do justice to the story of another woman who lived in hiding throughout the war years. The war has soul. One feels the intensity of the struggle to survive. One senses the decency of those who were ready to rescue and the evil that haunted a mother and father and their young child in the dangerous world they lived. Nancy Wright Beasley has told a powerful story with dignified restraint. She has given voice to an underreported side of the Holocaust - life in hiding."
Adriana Trigiani, author of the best selling Big Stone Gap trilogy, offered early praise for the book. According to Trigiani, "Nancy is a passionate, dedicated writer who has written a searing story, sure to capture readers with Izzy's Fire. She proves herself to be a storyteller who uses firsthand accounts and research with equal resolve."
Izzy's Fire, which encompasses Virginia Standards of Learning at a variety of levels, will be taught as a pilot project in several eighth grade language arts classes in Chesterfield County public schools during the 2004-05 school term.

out of the frying pan into the fire.......2005-08-10
Rebeccasreads highly recommends IZZY'S FIRE as a compelling account of how a Lithuanian Jewish couple & their son survived the Nazi occupation, & hide for 3 years in a Catholic farmer's root cellar. & then surviving the Communist "liberation" of their homeland.
Beasley draws from personal interviews, research & numerous memoirs, including those from Israel "Izzy" Ipson, who helped his family escape from Kovno Ghetto, one of the most notorious killing fields for Jews in Lithuania. The Ipps, as they were known then, relocated to Richmond following their liberation and later changed their name to Ipson. Their story has been re-created at the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond, Virginia.
IZZY'S FIRE is Eta's answer to those who say the Holocaust never happened, & is a tribute to personal bravery & the unquenchable resources of compassion, quick-wittedness & sheer determination to live, with a lot of luck thrown in.
Complete with maps & photos, IZZY'S FIRE is a story for all time.
The triumphant true story of a holocaust survivor and members of her family.......2005-07-04
Izzy's Fire: Finding Humanity In The Holocaust is the triumphant true story of a holocaust survivor and members of her family escaped the Kovno Ghetto in Lithuania, survived trials and successfully hid until the war's end in a hiding places granted them by a Catholic farmer. She, her husband, and other refugees dug a hole between two potato cellars, and with the unselfish aid of that selfless, risk taking Catholic family, miraculously survived the Holocaust. Afterward she and her husband emigrated to America and encountered a joyful reunion decades later. Izzy's Fire gives voice to those who survived the Holocaust in hiding, and is a welcome addition to Holocaust studies shelves.
Required reading for all high school students. .......2005-05-05
There are many people today that feel "entitled" due to race, relegion or the condition of the home in which they were born. This is a story about a family who's life was turned upside down by war; who lived in barns, potato holes and lived in fear of being murdered as was the fate of many of their family members. Through perserverance and a strong faith in God, they were able to get to America and lived the "american story" of pulling themselves up from poverty to owning a successful business. All young people need to read this story.
Excellent, excellent, excelent!.......2005-03-09
Izzy's Fire is by far one of the best books I've ever read. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering of this family in the ghetto in Lithuania. The book was extremely well written and was very hard to put down once I started it. Kudos to Ms. Beasley on a job well done! I can't wait until her next book. This is a must read.
Putting a face to the horrors of inhumanity.......2005-01-12
In all honesty, I had never read a book about holocaust survivors. Sure, I learned about the brutal, senseless mass murder of millions of Jews and seen those horrid, deplorable images of dead bodies of Jews lying around strewn while German soldiers looked on in glee in History class. But NEVER have I read a personal account, and it was far more devastating to my sense of humanity than I could ever imagine.
From the first pages of Izzy's Fire, by Nancy Wright Beasley, I was enthralled with Izzy Ipson and his family's story as well as those of their friends and family. Ms. Beasley did an awesome job of bringing their story to life for me, but more so making their story, their journey through hell, mine. I connected with these people because I am a wife and mother. I thought and later asked myself after I had read the story, would we have survived something like this? Would my husband have risked his life day in and day out, like Izzy, to save my son, and me and to provide safety and food for us? Would my son have endured as Jay did?
Edna lost two babies, one during the roundup in Lithuania and one after their escape to the United States. How did she keep her sanity? Was she made of steel? No! Ms. Beasley brilliantly displayed Edna's moments of fear, happiness, and extreme stress, like when her step-father, mother, her sister Minnie and their sons Fievel and Chaim were put on board the truck heading for certain death. It was only the knowing that Izzy would surely not live without them that made Edna not board that train with her son, and of course, Jay's stubborn desire to live to see his father. No one was without pain in this story; not even the reader.
I left the reading knowing the Ipson's persevered because of their faith and strength in God and one another. Even when faced with the knowledge that their families were executed, they still had one another to get them through, and that's what they needed. Not even hiding out in a make-shift shelter in a potato patch with 7 other people could break their spirit and resolve.
I cannot tell you exactly how many heroes are in this story. From the German and Jewish Ghetto soldiers who risked their lives to give information and ways to escape to not only Izzy but to others as well to the Gentiles (non-Jews) who risked their lives to hide their fellow human beings. In short, Ms. Beasley is by far one of the most powerful and genuine storytellers whose best gift, I believe, is letting the voice of the characters tell their own story. In no way does her voice intrude upon the essence of Izzy's story.
I recommend Izzy's Fire without abandon to anyone who wants to read about real people, real life, and real issues. It should be required reading in the public schools across America to help not only put a face and name to the horror's of the evil that man can do, but to also demonstrate the resilience of man to overcome when the odds are stacked against him. This book sent me running to the Holocaust Museum; it brought History alive for me, and it will do the same to you.

Book Description
Discovering Complexity offers an account of scientific discovery that aims to be psychologically and historically realistic. Drawing on cases from a number of life sciences, including biochemistry, genetics, and neuroscience, this study of the dynamics of theory development focuses on two psychological heuristics, decomposition and localization. William Bechtel and Robert Richardson identify a number of "choice-points" that scientists confront in developing mechanistic explanations and describe how different choices result in divergent explanatory models. According to Bechtel and Richardson's analysis, decomposition is the attempt to differentiate components of a system, while localization assigns responsibility for specific tasks to these components. The book examines in detail the usefulness of these heuristics in biological science, but also discusses their fallibility: underlying their use is the sometimes false assumption that nature is significantly decomposable and hierarchical. When a system does not appear to be decomposable, a classic response has been to abandon the pursuit of mechanistic explanation and to settle for accurate descriptions of phenomena. More recently, with advances in mathematical modeling, an alternative has emerged. Described in this work is an approach to explanation that appeals to interactions between simple components, rather than assigning functions to individual components.
