          Book Description

Women's employment is on the increase throughout Europe, and more women are going into managerial and professional ocupations. These changes are both cause and consequence of wider changes in the family, relations between the sexes, and social attitudes more generally. However, differences in national policies and attitudes mean that trends in women's employment show considerable variation across Europe. Restructuring Gender Relations and Employment investigates the differences in women's employment across Europe and explores the possibilities and limits of structural change and development. The book seeks to develop a new framework for the investigation of the changing mosaic of employment, family lives, and gender relations in contemporary Europe.

                Book Description

Every golfer knows the feeling: Anything that can go right will go WAY, WAY right. To hit a truly awful shot, mere incompetence is not enough…you really need an audience. Back in the early days of the game, when the first rules were written and the basics of etiquette formulated, there appeared a series of shrewd and rueful observations about golf that were nearly always attributed to a mysterious individual named Murphy. As time passed, these canny precepts found their way into the culture at large—but the roots of Murphy’s Laws clearly lie in this sport that’s tailor-made to expose the fundamental malevolence of the cosmos. Here they are, collected—for all lovers of the links to ponder when they’re in the rough!

Now a standard in music education literature, this in-depth study takes the fear out of playing in time signatures other than 4/4. In a methodical manner, this book aids in rounding out any player's rhythmic and reading vocabulary. Perfect for all musicians wanting to play odd times with ease.

5 out of 5 stars How Odd Time Is !.......2000-06-11

This book is from 1968 but it's still a very good book to start your Odd Time studies with. You have to know how to read music to use it (if dont know how to do that you could check out the books by Robert Starer).

Although written by a very famous drummer this is not a drumset book, but an exercise book written to develop your sight reading skill and understanding of Odd Rhythms, and it is suitable for everyone no matter what instrument you play, the examples are not melodic, just written on one note, so the focus is on the Rhythm, and the examples are from simple to quite complicated.

The book deals with Rhythms in 3,5,6,7,8,9 and 12, with either the quarter or eighth or sixteenth note as the basic pulse. There are sections dealing with changing metres also. The book is about 130 pages so there is a lot of stuff here, the exercices start simple and then gradualy get more complicated.

                      A fine book, Highly Recommended.

Other good rhythm book Authors are Alan Dworsky, Gary Hess, Peter Magadini, Reinhard Flatichler, Gary Chaffee and Gavin Harrison.

                        Book Description

Staging Place: The Geography of Modern Drama reimagines the content and continuities of theater history and exposes underlying dialogues between "home and homelessness, belonging and exile"--a century-long struggle with the meaning and power of place, which the author terms "geopathology." By reading canonical works in conjunction with contemporary ones, Chaudhuri charts the evolution of a dramatic paradigm with profound theatrical and thematic implications.
Chaudhuri starts with a discussion of a "poetics of exile" in early modern drama, where the figure of home is constructed as a locus of two conflicting impulses: the desire to find a stable site for individual identity and the desire to deterritorialize the self. By mid-century, she argues, a new discourse of "failed homecoming" begins to displace this geopathic model and replace the poetics of exile with a grim anti-poetics of immigration. She then employs postmodern and postcolonial theories of place and culture to define the emerging multiculturalism as a creative reworking of the figures of home, homecoming, homelessness, immigration and exile.
"This is a book of real originality. Its treatment of space in modern drama is elegant and powerful. . . ." --William B. Worthen, Northwestern University
"Staging Place is a powerfully written book, deft in its handling of familiar and unfamiliar plays alike and eclectic in its use of theatrical sources." --Essays in Theatre/ Études théâtrales
"This sophisticated and well-written study for graduate students and their teachers explores modern drama's preoccupation with the seemingly irreconcilable discontinuities between the notions of home and homelessness, belonging and exile. . . . The readings of individual plays are fresh and invigorating. . . ." --Choice

2 out of 5 stars CLASSIC TV BUT NOT A CLASSIC BOOK.......2004-01-19

This book is a collection of lists. But many of the lists are nonsense lists that are just cute attempts at humor.

The highlight of the book was the 100 greatest sitcom episodes. Even if I could figure out their formula the list is at best controversial. As another reviewer indicated some of the episodes that made it made no sense to me. The number one episode in the list was not even, in my opinion, the number one show for the series. It was a good episode but ...

TV Land is a great network. "TV Land To Go" is not a great book.

2 out of 5 stars Based in Opinion.......2003-08-09

The book seems to be grounded primarily in one person's personal opinion rather than a public opinion poll. You will cringe to see what episodes made it to this list, and you'll be disappointed that some shows never even made it. This book is only a moderately enjoyable bathroom read. Several inexcusable factual errors forced me to put the book to rest in a recycle bin.

4 out of 5 stars A tongue-in-cheek look at TV from the TV Land perspective.......2003-03-29

Within the pages of Tom Hill's "TV Land to Go: The Big Book of TV Lists, TV Lore, and TV Bests" you will find a list of the Worst Possible Men's Softball Team (composed of classic TV stars). We are talking a battery comprised of pitcher Jack Benny and catcher Paul Lynde and a keystone combination of David Hyde Pierce (Niles Crane) and Howard McNear (Floyd the Barber). If that does not give you a clear picture of the level of insanity provided within the pages of this volume, then nothing is going to accomplish that task and you should just go back to watching the tube.

Tom Hill is the creative director and head writer at TV Land, where he claims responsibility for the network's trademark tongue-in-cheek on-air promotions. By no means is this a definitive look at television even though The Top 100 Sitcom Episodes of All Time are determined by using an actual scientific formula (patent pending) called The Big TV Satisfaction Ratio, which involves such factors as SyndicoDurability, Comic Valence, and Emotional Resonance along with more fun things like Celebrity, Gimmickry, Theme Song and Kitsch. But do you really need to go through all of that mathematical computation to put "Chuckles Bites the Dust" from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" at the top of the list? Besides, as soon as you see there is nothing from "I Love Lucy" in the Top 10 you know there is a serious flaw here. Still, it is fun to recognize classic episodes and to hear about ones that you missed and you have to admire the idea that anything from "Hogan's Heroes" or "Family Affair" should be anywhere on this list.

"TV Land to Go" does have some utility for students of the history of television, especially from a popular culture perspective, but this is ultimately more of a celebration of the medium than a critical study. Most of what you will find here is pure opinion (e.g., TV 15's Greatest Grumps) or outright fiction (e.g., The Innovators of TV Land), but there are attempts at more traditional academic research, such as the reading of the choreography of the "Brady Bunch" opening. The result is a fun book that you can pick up and leaf through and fun something of interest, whether it be The 11 Greatest Hair Crises in TV History (#7 Laura blabbing that Alan Brady is bald) or The 9 Best Production Slates (#1 Jack Webb's Mark VII Hammer).

The team behind Professional Active Server Pages 2.0 has written a definitive guide for the latest version of ASP included with Windows 2000. This lengthy text offers a comprehensive look at the technology and is geared toward seasoned professionals looking to truly master this important development platform. The team of authors touch on almost every topic a working ASP coder might be interested in, including what to do when "it all goes wrong."

This title is divided into six sections that focus on key aspects of ASP: the basics, ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), building components for ASP, integration with BackOffice, security/performance/scalability, and reference material. This organization makes the book useful for both lengthy reads and quick daily reference. The index and set of appendices are also quite comprehensive.

Code snippets of judicious size and summary boxes with key information such as errors and function calls make the reading productive without being distracting. Most of the material is presented in a structured topical tutorial; however, an excellent XML newspaper case study provides a real-world perspective on XML and ASP.

While a number of working programmers authored this guide, the group's expertise has been well-integrated to read consistently. The team provides some error-preventing programming procedures such as formatting and indenting code, being "Explicit" about declarations, converting variables to the appropriate data types, using good variable naming conventions, encapsulating script, and more. Whether you're looking for information on utilizing components, implementing certificates, or working with Active Directory, you'll find answers in this fine work. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: ASP basics and versions, Active Server Components, ADO, XML data, components, COM/COM+, ASP Script Components, C++ component issues, ADSI and Active Directory, Message Queue Server, Collaboration Data Objects, Exchange Server integration, certificates, performance optimization, site load balancing, and ASP Object Model.

                          Book Description

This book is about Active Server Pages 3.0, as included with Windows 2000. However, because ASP is now a core part of so many Web-oriented features within Windows, this book covers a far wider area than just how ASP works. ASP is maturing all the time to encompass more integration with other Windows services and software, and so there are many other areas that impinge directly on the use and performance of ASP.

In particular this involves the Windows operating system itself, including the new security features of Windows 2000, and the Internet server software that comes with Windows 2000 - Internet Information Server (IIS). On top of this are the other less obvious services, which also have a direct or indirect effect on the way that ASP works. These include COM+, the various Internet service administration tools, and (indirectly) the many other services and installed software packages that either provide additional functionality to ASP, or which have interfaces that are available for use in ASP.

So, as well as chapters all about the roots of ASP, the base object structure, and how it's used, you'll also see chapters that demonstrate the many different ways that ASP integrates seamlessly with other software and services in Windows. One of the most obvious of these is access to data in a relational database or other type of data store (such as Active Directory), and you'll see several chapters devoted to these topics.

We'll also explore the intimate relationship between Internet Information Server and COM and the new COM+, and see how ASP has changed the way that it hosts and executes external components to provide better performance and scalability. This also affects the way that components are designed and built, and we'll be exploring this topic in some depth as well.

3 out of 5 stars Good for reference, not for studying........2003-12-10

This book covers most of topic you may need. So, you can use it as a reference on ASP3. But it is not for beginner or for studying from a ground. It is quite hard-to-read, not explained in-depth, and it made me quite ???.

5 out of 5 stars Need to know ASP? Get this book........2003-08-01

A bit outdated now with .Net, but I still get this ol' book out once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST book for classical ASP.......2003-04-23

Obsolete??? Hardly. As I write this review, new Web page technologies are being matured: jsp, php, chm (yech). New models are being matured: Servlets, STRUTS, .NET. Classical ASP 3.0 is still quick, fast and necessary for small to medium businesses, even enterprise-level webpages. There's no better book to learn all the standards, applications, basics, and advanced capabilities of ASP than THIS book.

I love Wrox. I started with their Beginning ASP 2.0 book (how I learned). This book, a bit more advanced but in the beginning level, is still all you need to get things going from single tiered applications to multi-tiered, database driven apps. It goes into COM objects and other MS Services like Index. Really a one-stop book.

With this book and Google you have all the reference you need.

Note: ASP 3.0 is in no way, shape, or form similar to ASP.net.

A small, tiny complaint about this book is that it can be a bit wordy...just a tad. And the index in the back could use a bit more improvement. The info's still in there.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, A True God Send.......2003-04-19

If this book had nothing more than the asptable component in chapter 16, it would still be worth the extremely high price of all wrox press books. But the book has so many useful examples that you can build on.

My only experience has been a few intranets. And I always had bought the beginners series books because I didn't feel I was at the professional level. Well, this book showed me the reason I felt that way was because I didn't know the power of ASP.

If you have been playing around with ASP and really want to move forward, stop playing with the beginners and harness the power of ASP.

4 out of 5 stars good reference book.......2003-02-03

As you I go along developing my web app, this book answers most of my questions, fexample, how to unload/load your application when you want to unload your dll from the application and vice versa. Before finding the answer in this book, I just rebooted the server. Along the way, it always answers my question to perplexing problems that I stumble upon, i.e why isn't my web app preserved the session id.

I have to admit that this is not a book that I would read on spare time. I don't know whether it's the flow of the structure or what. But I always get lost in the "too much" information supplied. Hence I cannot give it 5 stars.

For reference, this is a book to keep if you're developing ASP for one reason; as you become more comfortable with ASP, this book provides answers to your "no-more" beginner questions.

Drawing on a remarkable range of primary sources, this book reveals the first president's exalted public stature, his near deification by the American people, and the cult which surrounded him as much during his own lifetime as it did over the next two centuries.

A Great and Good Man, a fascinating collection of documents from Washington's era, demonstrates the remarkable esteem in which Washington was held. Here we see Washington as he stood before and was addressed by the nation-praised by politicians, advised by foreigners, and lionized by citizens. In Washington's own letters and addresses we also glimpse the canny side of Washington, a man who was careful with his public image and was a shrewd gamesman in the political arena.

                                    Book Description

How we see the world - our attitudes and assumptions about it - profoundly affects the way we deal with it. This book is written by an interdisciplinary team of ecologists, nature conservationists and environmental philosophers. It seeks to make the connection between the theoretical approaches to the valuation of the natural world and how these work in practice.
