Disappointment if looking for a Christian perspective.......2005-12-30

If you want a good laugh, some interesting, rather way-out advice, and don't expect to reach maturity before you are 30, the Pocket Guide to Adulthood is for you. Aiming to inculcate some useful information through humor, this secular book has quite a hodgepodge of advice: how to cook eggs; don't take Hollywood's advice about first dates; changing a flat tire; an amazing card trick; recipe for a butt-kickin' fruit smoothie; living bling free; urban legends; how to play poker; beware financial procrastination; buying groceries; home maintenance; and taking a good photograph.

Christian humorist, sometime expert on end times, and author of other Pocket Guides, Jason Boyett knows how to entertain with words, often using modern slang (which may be slightly offensive to people not quite up to today). His aim is to help his reader cope with the demands of a more mature life.

I enjoyed reading this little book but was disappointed when subjects failed to mature into the Christian perspective. The advice formulae in the Pocket Guide to Adulthood make it a possible reference volume in topics non-spiritual. A credible and excellent resource on entertainment!.......2003-04-14

I would have to disagree with the previous commentary that "Death by Entertainment" is not a credible resource of information on the entertainment industry. On the contrary, I found Holly McClure's book to be uniquely informative, full of helpful information, interesting examples, and one of the few books with a chapter devoted to helping parents teach their children to be discerning when it comes to the media.

Holly's approach is a practical one for the average person who wants to be informed, offering advice from a moral and ethical perspective rather than one from the popular culture. Her advice obviously comes from her years of professional experience in the business and more importantly, from being a parent herself, which is why I enjoyed her book.

I found Holly McClure's stories and antidotes fascinating, her tales about Hollywood extremely interesting and her information well documented, using resources that obviously deal with the entertainment industry. She clearly states that her book is designed for the average reader and concerned parent who want to be more informed about the media, giving no pretense that it is a complete guide. I particularly enjoyed her practical tips on recognizing media influences and I gleaned a lot from her "Raising your kids to be media savvy" applications for parents.

Holly's book has opened my eyes to the areas of entertainment and media that invade our everyday lives and she has given me important and practical advice I can follow.

I felt Holly McClure's book "Death by Entertainment" accomplished what the author set out to do, inform anyone interested in learning how Hollywood and the media influences our children, families and culture. I think this is an important tool for anyone who wants an eye-opening account of how our culture is effected by the media and a 'must-have' for parents, youth groups and teachers (like myself) to own.

This book is very informative and should be read by every parent. This is a great novel for the christian family.
It is amazing what our kids getting from the media and the psychological effect that it has on them. Despite other reviever's comments, I highly recommend this book.

Worst book I ever attempted to read........2001-10-17

I bought "Death by Entertainment" hoping it would be a resource for me and my family about protecting ourselves from the massive influence of the media. This is what Holly McClure was claiming to do with this book. I was hoping at very least it would have given me some perspective of what's going on with mass media. It did neither.
Holly didn't even attempt to disguise her agenda of only promoting Judeo-Christian values while claiming any other alternative to her beliefs is wrong. It appeared to me that the only movies and other media she approved of were that which were consistent with her own narrow minded views. She did not want mass media to lose it's grip on us; she wanted instead for mass media to teach us her views and her views only.
I could not finish this book because after several chapters it was apparent that she had no credible information to back up her conclusions on most issues. (I'm sorry Holly but USA Today and Entertainment Weekly are not worthy sources of research.) I skipped to sections further in the book hoping that it would improve but it did not. Many of her drawn conclusions were not supported by the evidence she provided. (I'm sorry again Holly, but the top twenty word searches on Yahoo! doesn't represent the surfing habits of 100% of Internet users. So you can't conclude that 90% of surfers are looking for what 18 of the top 20 word searches are on Yahoo!.)
I can't recommend this book to anyone unless they were looking for Christian propaganda. This book consists of nothing more than Holly's opinions that are not supported nor substantiated by reliable evidence. (Holly again, if you are going to accuse James Cameron of tampering with the MPAA to get a PG-13 rating for Titanic you'd better provide some proof, else it's a witch hunt. I am not saying that what you are claiming isn't true, I'm saying that for me to believe it you need to offer compelling evidence.) With that said, does anybody want to buy my copy? Real cheap?

a worthy update.......2005-08-06

Has it already been twenty years since the first edition of this book came out?! When it did so, it was soon regarded as a classic. The intervening years have done nothing to diminish that assessment. Turkle has updated it to form this second edition.

By and large, her analysis in 1984 proved on the mark. As computers have improved in power, and become smaller and more portable, their users tend to identify with them. And here it should be said that the cellphones of today are considered, and are indeed, computers in the context of this text. Certainly, a typical cellphone has a raw computational capacity exceeding the personal computers of 1984.

To some readers, the most puzzling thing may be why some users so identify with their computers, or half-jokingly, attribute personalities to them. There seems to be some innate urge in many people for this.

Needless to say, suppose we project out another 20 years. The trend is for more such behaviour. The sophistication and personalisation possible in those future mobile machines makes this inevitable. And this is even NOT assuming any breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, which might endow the devices with true personalities.

A little bit of an open door........2002-04-26

A classic in the field of human/computer interaction, it suffers a bit from its age (although I was delighted to read about the way children interacted with Merlin and Simon, given that I was a child who had interacted with both of the above). Children are so much more saturated with computers and computer technology than when the book was written, that I wonder how the observations will have changed.

I'm a fan of Turkle, so I just loved it. It's just one of the first deep books written about human-computer interaction.

Priceless Early Look at Hackers with "The Right Stuff".......2000-04-08

This is "the" book that described the true origin of "hacking" as in "pushing the edge of the envelope" by writing a complex program in six lines of code instead of ten. This is a really superior piece of work about computer cultures and the people that belong to them. It is a wonderfully readable book with magnificent insights into the psychology of the young people at the bleeding edge of the computer frontier.

A bold academic foray into a new media.......1997-08-12

Turkle's seminal text examines the social implications of our increasingly computer-suffused lives. With a strong emphasis on individual interactions with computers, this ethnography describes an emerging post-modern computer culture, and goes on to interpret it in philosophical terms. A bit utopian, very smart, acts as a bit of a pre-quel to her recent work, Life on the Screen

"I cannot speak too highly of this book- the overall standard of presentation and production is excellent. It should be on the reading list of all university biology and environmental science courses, since it is the products of such courses who must deal with the major challenge facing our own species in the next 50 years: the sensible stewardship of the remaining forests. It also merits a place in school libraries, and will serve to provide a wealth of information to the concerned later day reader who seeks accesible, up-to-date information on the complexities of forest conservation."
