Passtrack Life, Accident and health insurance.......2004-08-20
This book is typical of many text books; dry and confusing. The material is presented in a dry and boring fashion. You will NOT want to read this book for any reason other than passing the insurance exam.
Good combination of Life & Health (Accident & Disability).......2002-07-06
Combines the Dearborne Pastrack Health Insurance & Life Insurance License Exam Manuals.
Overall it is a good study guide (I passed using this book with 2 weeks of leisurely at home study), but the test section could be revamped - it did not include enough questions that were like the ones on the actual exam (I took an Experior Online state exam).

Book Description
Most countries apply some form of restrictions to local government budgeting and borrowing, but in various forms and to varying degrees. These restrictions are considered necessary components of a fiscal federalism involving some sort of central government control in local affairs, a design which can be termed `administrative federalism'. In this comprehensive book Bernard Dafflon introduces the reader to the institutional complexities of fiscal controls in European local public finance.
The authors comprehensively explore the issues of government budgeting and borrowing, with the ultimate aim of understanding how mechanisms of fiscal discipline are established and function. Ten European countries are scrutinized on the basis of ten key issues including local budgetary policy-making, the policy effects of local budget deficits and public debt, the rules of amortization and debt installment, whether extensive fiscal controls promote budget accountability and discipline, and how the Maastricht criteria concerning deficit and debt can be implemented. They go on to highlight the complicated mix of rules, administrative routines and cooperative arrangements through which each country implements their individual budget controls. Although these arrangements have been successful in avoiding serious fiscal imbalance in the last twenty years, the authors argue that their impact on the broader goals of the government sector remains a more contentious question.
This book offers a broad understanding of the rich institutional variations and elaborate fiscal designs in Europe from a comparative perspective. It will be welcomed by political scientists, public sector managers and economists, and scholars, practitioners and advanced students of public policy and fiscal studies.

Gaze into my mind..........2007-08-23
I first came across this book last year and I was very very pleased with it then. I saw it this time and I had no choice but to purchase it. Though a lot of people may read it and think, "this makes absolutely no sense", the book has a lot of worth while one sentence phrases that will make you think. Though it may start a little rough, the book has some great inside to the way a lot of beautiful people and people in general view moments in life.

Interesting insight into Human Emotions.......2006-08-09
This book is beautifully illustrated with lines of poetic insight into the human experience. At times it is funny, sad, quirky, edgy and always brutally honest. It forces the reader to stop and think about the one-liners such as "I'm practicing being a better person on you" and "Being self-important is all I have." Every page caused a new emotional response. Don't let the brevity of print on each page fool you into just flipping through this like a coffee table book. This is something which a reader can easily pore through several times. I plan on reading it again and again.

CNN: about as bad as Fox News.......2005-08-03
There was a time when CNN was a channel I watched regularly. Because they're so desperate for ratings, they've decided to ape Fox News. They have the drunk, psycho blowhard Nancy Disgrace. They have airheads like Robin Meade, who wears WAY TOO MUCH makeup and is as phony as the day is long ("Good Morning, Sunshine!" - she's talking to a REMOTE, UNMANNED TELEVISION CAMERA!) and Erica Hill (who wears her hair like as a stiff, UGLY helmet) who try and act like they're actually "there with you"; like they're your "friends". Very deceptive. To their credit, they did fire the bow-tied moron and Bill Hemmer. Thank God Judy Woodruff is gone (Hey, Larry King: FOLLOW HER LEAD!) They never should have hired Soledad O'Brien. It was a horrible mistake booting the sexy Paula Zahn from mornings. CNN and other 24 hr news channels are only at their best when providing live, unscripted coverage, where they don't have a chance to can their comments. Instead of providing REAL news, viewers are subjected to "human interest stories" like young blondes who go missing, exploiting them for all their worth. CNN is the equivalent of "reality" tv - which is to say: GARBAGE. If you want some real news visit Democracy Now - THAT'S worth watching.
This is a Good Book!.......2005-05-17
See first hand as CNN struggles to be objective in reporting, not as easy as one may think. There are many great stories in the book about the personalities which make up the news. There are lessons in reporting that are very applicable today. I found many parallels to the radio business. I recommend this book to any news reporter who cares about details.

This is an absolutely great book for fans of CNN or anyone in the media. It contains tons of inspiring quotes and great behind-the-scenes stories.
I wouuld highly recommend it.
Book Description
In this second edition of the indispensable SAS for Forecasting Time Series, Brocklebank and Dickey show you how SAS performs univariate and multivariate time series analysis. Taking a tutorial approach, the authors focus on the procedures that most effectively bring results: the advanced procedures ARIMA, SPECTRA, STATESPACE, and VARMAX. They demonstrate the interrelationship of SAS/ETS procedures with a discussion of how the choice of a procedure depends on the data to be analyzed and the results desired. With this book, you will learn to model and forecast simple autoregressive (AR) processes using PROC ARIMA, and you will learn to fit autoregressive and vector ARMA processes using the STATESPACE and VARMAX procedures. Other topics covered include detecting sinusoidal components in time series models, performing bivariate cross-spectral analysis, and comparing these frequency-based results with the time domain transfer function methodology. New and updated examples in the second edition include retail sales with seasonality, ARCH models for stock prices with changing volatility, vector autoregression and cointegration models, intervention analysis for product recall data, expanded discussion of unit root tests and nonstationarity, and expanded discussion of frequency domain analysis and cycles in data.

< 0.......2005-11-27
I had had much higher expectations for a book written by two Ph. D. econometricians. Instead of an angry-movie-critic-style harangue, let me just recommend making a print-out of selected chapters of SAS/ETS User's Guide - available online - describing the procedures that you (may) need, such as MODEL, FORECAST, ARIMA, VARMAX, UTC and STATESPACE.
Ugh!.......2004-10-14
The SAS Institute's Books by Users series contains many excellent manuals. The ones by Paul Allison (on survival analysis and on logistic regression) and by Stokes, Davis and Koch (categorical data analysis) are particularly well-written and illuminating. Unfortunately, Brocklebank and Dickey's contribution on time series analysis falls far short of the mean.
The problem is not the statistical content, which is quite reliable, but rather than explanatory style. Chapters are disorganized, with many ideas introduced before being explained. Furthermore, the authors have adopted an unfortunate habit of constantly referring to "you" (i.e., the reader). "You" will do this. "You" will decide to do that. In many case, it was far from clear why such decisions would be made.
The most serious problem, though, is the treatment of SAS code. This is supposed to be a book about ideas AND about syntax. But code is repeatedly presented with any kind of line-by-line explantion. Readers ("you" again) are left to wonder what the various elements of code mean, and how they control the computations done.
I was very disappointed with this book. Unfortunately, the only alternative is to use the SAS documentation, and that's not really a very good alternative.
Excellent.......2004-02-24
If you're interested in advanced methods of forecasting time series data using SAS then this is the book to have. It is loaded with examples and interpretation of output as well as a nice concise explanation of theory. Everything you would expect from such renowned authors.
This manual needs a chapter on forecast accuracy........2003-07-28
While the publishers describe SAS for Forecasting Time Series as a manual, the authors have provided more than SAS statements and the resulting outputs. Theoretical explanations, equations, and matrix algebra forms of equations fill the book. This superb manual is the product of the Research and Development Director of Analytic Solutions at SAS and of the Professor of Statistics who was the co-inventor of the Dickey-Fuller test. In addition to the coverage of the essential univariate and multivariate time series analysis topics (e.g., ARIMA models), the authors included entire chapters or large portions of chapters on: Cointegration, State Space Modeling, Spectral Analysis, and Data Mining.
My only disappointment with this manual was the lack of an entire chapter on forecast accuracy. Four pages of references did not include a single reference to articles about forecasting competitions. The authors could have: (1) held back recent data in their examples (2) made forecasts with their best models (3) explained how to identify significant changes over time in error terms, standard errors, and in correlations (4) explained when and how to re-calculate model parameters (5) discussed the choice of unbiased forecast accuracy measures for comparing forecasts from ARIMA and regression models.
Book Description
The events in Iraq in 1941 had crucial strategic consequences. The country's oil reserves were a highly coveted prize for the Axis powers, and its location provided a corridor in the defence of Palestine and the Suez Canal. Had Iraq fallen to the Axis powers, Britain could have lost its foothold in the Middle East and the Mediterranean and risked losing World War II. This book examines the strategy and tactics of the Iraq campaign, the role of the Indian Army and the Arab Legion, the nature of expeditionary warfare and the complementary roles of air and land power.

The past and present history.......2006-04-25
I had read a little bit about British operations in the Middle East during World War Two. Robert Lyman's book is far more information than I found on this little-known campaign.
As a veteran of the current Middle East muddle, I found the 1941 maps of Baghdad interesting. Urban growth over 60 years and all that have changed the landscape significantly. Other maps and diagrams were recognizable even though 1941 and 2004 have more built-up areas. I was startled to find out that there are living veterans of that 1941 campaign. Sixty-five years is a long time, and active military service in that region during the 1940's meant that the soldier was exposed to every known human disease, and a bunch that still aren't on medical science's radar screen.
What a movie this campaign would make! Small bands of British soldiers (well, mostly Indian soldiers) with obselete equipment facing impossible odds and the latest British and German equipment, and succeeding through sheer pluck and superior leadership--this would eclipse the campaign against Rommel for sheer excitement.
Contrasting with the 2003 invasion of Iraq by the United States, the British operation was on a shoe string. The recent British forces in Iraq had the latest equipment and excellent communications. Pasha Glub's long desert march in 1941 was a epic--in 2003 such long-range desert movements were routine for GPS-equipped American and British units.
History shouldn't have to be repeated. History's lessons aren't always heeded. I wonder what lessons Saddam drew from the 1941 campaign?
A Valuable Primer for both Casual and Professional Readers.......2006-04-02
It is unfortunate that Robert Lyman's very well written campaign summary, Iraq 1941, was not available four years ago, since it is loaded with lessons for the current Western intervention in Iraq. The fact that much of the fighting in 1941 took place around towns such as Fallujah and Habbaniya, makes Lyman's narrative seem all the more gripping and relevant. The British intervention in Iraq in 1941 is one of the lesser-known campaigns of the Second World War and Lyman's summary fills an important gap in the history of that conflict. Both the casual reader interested in modern Iraq and the student of joint military operations will find Iraq 1941 to be a valuable Primer.
The author's opening section on the origins of the campaign lays out the strategic importance of Iraq for the British war effort (oil), the state of British colonial rule in Iraq and the April 1941 coup by Rashid Ali that led to war. Aside from maintaining access to Iraqi oil, Winston Churchill also wanted to exclude German intervention on the Iraqi side - which was clearly in the offing. The section on opposing commanders and opposing forces are good on the British side, weak on the Iraqi side and completely omit the Germans. Although Lymann discusses the Luftwaffe force sent to Mosul, for some reason he never mentions the unit identifications (which were KG4, ZG26 and ZG76). This information is easily accessible on Internet sites like Fedlgrau.com and it is apparent that the author's research was limited to the British side. This volume has five 2-D maps (British & German operations in Iraq, April-June 1941; British movements, April-June 1941; British operations in Basra, May 1941; the siege of RAF Habbaniya, May 1941; and the British advance to Baghdad, May 1941), three 3-D maps (Habbaniya & Fallujah; advance to Baghdad; and capture of Basra) and two battle scenes (Luftwaffe attack on Kingcol; the attack on Fallujah).
The author's narrative of the campaign is quite good and one of the better ones that I have seen in the series for awhile; certainly the fact that this was a short campaign involving only small numbers of troops aided the author in this task. The reader will certainly be struck by the similarities between the British intervention in 1941 and the Anglo-US intervention in 2003, particularly the role of airpower. Despite the fact that 60,000 Iraqi soldiers were available to oppose fewer than 5,000 British troops, a small force of antiquated RAF aircraft were able to pummel the Iraqi troops whenever they attempted to mass for attacks. The Luftwaffe and Iraqi Air Force were unable to gain control of the air and this British air supremacy paved the way for British troops to roll into Baghdad by crushing Iraqi morale. While the Iraqis managed one half-way decent counterattack at Fallujah, their military performance in 1941 was just as pathetic as in 1991 or 2003. Readers should also note the looting in Baghdad in May 1941 that followed the collapse of the Rashid Ali regime, indicating that the looting after Saddam's fall in 2003 was far from unique.
Overall, this is a terrific campaign summary from Osprey, with a few caveats. Lyman's narrative is a bit too Anglo-centric, which makes it difficult to evaluate the Iraqi or German performance. There are some Arabic sources in English available that he might have consulted, or at least listed in his bibliography. The lack of the usual section on opposing plans is particularly glaring, in that it makes it difficult to assess enemy intentions. A bit more background on the nature of the coup and Iraqi demographics at that time would have been helpful, since today we know that Sunni and Shia attitudes about foreign intervention are radically different (for example, what group were the Iraqi levies at Habbaniya recruited from?). The lack of any information or estimates on total casualties for either side in the campaign is also noticeable. There is also one odd error that pops up here and there that may confuse some readers, which is that several times in the text the author confuses the German invasion of Greece (Marita) with Crete (Mercury). For example, on page 28 he writes, "on 8 April 1941, the day that British troops first came into contact with Germans on Crete.." but the invasion of Crete was on 20 May 1941.On page 55, he refers to General Wilson in Jerusalem on 6 May "following his evacuation from the debacle in Crete.." again, this should read `Greece' and not `Crete.'
Long overdue chapter in Second World War history.......2006-03-08
At last a historian has taken the time to bring the Middle East into WW2. While not nearly as bloody as the battles taking place in North Africa, Russia, or Asia during 1941, the British invasion of Iraq aimed at preventing axis influence from seeping further into the Mid-East. Lyman's crucial text ably explains what was at risk here, the Middle East, Africa, perhaps even the war itself. In a time where history books barely even mention the Africa campaign of 1940-1943 it is hard to picture ww2 being a completely "WORLD" war, yet it was, and if more historians begin delving into this fascinating theatre of conflict we might better understand what is going on right now, and what happened before ww2. It is worth noting that the British not only invaded Iraq, but invaded Italian held Somaliland, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, Vichy French held Syria, Lebanon and Madagascar, and together with the Soviet army invaded Iran (Persia) to quell pro Nazi sympathies. At the time these events would have seemed the difference between victory and defeat for the British who were essentially fighting the war alone (the Russians came into the fight that year). It would be nice to see a historian write a definitive history of the war in the mid-east, and finally connect Asia and Europe into what should be remembered as a truely global conflict. At least for the sake of the hundreds of men who died on both sides and were subsequantly forgotten by history.

Excellent Study .......2005-10-08
Biale has filled the vacuum that one seems to get the impression of and defeats the nonsensical myths one tends to get from biased sources. This is a well researched and illuminating tour through Jewish political relations for over 3,000 years. One gets a better understanding of Jews and Gentiles, Imperial Powers and a small ethno-relgious-cultural groups struggle to not be absorbed like most others. One gets a better understanding of how anti-semitism had arisen rather than the typical "unexplainable and irrational" answer that defies logic itself.
Some interesting theories but..........2003-10-17
While there is an interesting premise to this work, the history itself doesn't back it up. Biale admirably tries to back up his thesis, and seems at times to be successful. However, it is not only at first glance that this book's information seems largely counter-intuitive. The simple fact of the matter is, as Monroe Rosenthal's book on the subject elucidates, the military tradition has not only been a constant presence in Judaism as a whole, but has been the real guaranteur of Jewish preservation throughout most of history. It is when power in the martial sense is wholly detached from the conception of the Jew that he becomes a free target to all who wish him ill, which is to say many nations and individuals throughout the course of history. It was the existence of the Jewish Parthian cataphracts that in all likelihood caused the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire to refrain from additional pogroms. In the end, while an interesting book to read, and again a change of pace, this book is not the most accurate of analyses of power in Jewish history. Still, if you wish to find evidence to back up certain left-wing theories vis-a-vis modern Israeli deterrence capabilities and the counterproductive impact they have on overall Jewish affairs, this might be the best book for you. Still, I wouldn't recommend this as your focal work to support an educated theory on the subject.

The Jewish Emergence from Powerlessness.......2003-03-30
Gun control is a burning issue in America today. Bauer raises legitiate concerns about this issue in relation to the ability of the Jewish people to protect themselves from tyranny and extermination during the Nazi era. Bauer discusses the inability of the Jewish people to defend themselves before, and during, the Holocaust because of anti-gun laws which disarmed the civilian population. Though commentary on armed resistance is only a portion of the book; this section alone made the writing worth the money spent, and has profoundly affected my stance on private gun ownership.

One of the rare.......2003-01-25
With growing demand of hydrographic data to support offshore work instead of the traditional nautical charting, Ingham's book is one of the rare text books published for the publics in hydrography.
It contains almost everything from the technical aspects to the law and legal view of private hydrographic surveyor. Nevertheless, to some extent, this book is merely an introduction to the hydrographic science and practice.
Some says -name does sell. Well, this book should be retitled with marine geomatic for surveyor and engineer as it indeed covers hydrographic survey practice in modern era with electronic sensors and equipment such as the multibeam, GPS, etc.
Again, if you are looking for a book in hydrographic practice and science. You won't get many of them. Commander Ingham's book is definitely the one you should read.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A340143. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Army's current activity-based costing model, called Service Based Costing, focuses on costing Major Commands (MACOMS) and large installations. The Army has yet to develop an activity-based costing model for smaller organizations. This thesis develops an activity-based costing model for a small army organization, the Presidio of Monterey's Law Enforcement Command (LEC). This study arrived at the model by analyzing the LEC to determine the LEC's products, processes/activities needed to produce those products, and the resources consumed by processes/activities while producing products. The model identifies seven major products produced by the LEC. These products are Police Information, Police Patrol Service, Investigations, Crime Prevention Education, Crime Watch Hot-line, Physical Security Inspections, and Magistrate Support.
