1 out of 5 stars Waste of paper and money.......2002-10-03

The book has the appearance of a free pamphlet, and has a font size of approximately 18, with ten to twenty unorganized resume samples, most of which have errors which are pointed out on the following page.

There are no guidelines and there is no format. I still don't know what to call a moonlighting position on a resume. What a waste.

            Book Description

Written for driven individuals, this manual shows how to get the happiness and satisfaction that most people do not find in their regular jobs and activities through volunteering and service to others. This guide teaches that achieving self-understanding before beginning a program of volunteer work offers the chance for even greater inner happiness and satisfaction than volunteering "because everyone in the office is doing it." This thought-provoking guide shows volunteers that they are doing more than improving the community around them-they are improving themselves as well.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional book.......2003-05-28

This is a wonderful book that reinforces what we already know: that it is our duty to help those less fortunate than us. The rewards are multiple, the joys of volunteerism are immense. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking to make a positive impact in the world in which they live. You dont have to be larger than life to perform minor miracles in the lives of those less fortunate.

5 out of 5 stars For everyone who cares about this country........2002-07-17

This slender, easy-to-read softback explains "How To Achieve Deep-Down Satisfaction and Create That Desire in Other." The book is dedicate "to the individual and organizations that demonstrate daily what Americanism is all about." This book relates that self-help and individual action are qualities that made this country. They are also the qualities that will save it, Bennett believes.
"Our biggest challenge today is to discover and explore deep-down satisfaction. We must be properly grounded," the author says. We must learn to share; not be so self-centered Words on paper can start an idea but "it will always be the group meeting face-to-face that gets things done."
The idea, prevalent today in our materialistic society, is that if one donates money that is all that's necessary; that it solves problems. The solution to problems is the same as it's always been, this book says - people helping other people. You cannot become successful without sharing with others.
This is a most interesting book to read. First, it talks about "you." And everyone loves to hear about himself. But it also stresses "you" in conjunction with others. That is what makes the difference, Bennett says, in one's being happy and successful and satisfied..
Everyone who cares about this country should read this book and think on the propositions it sets forth. In the very beginning of the book, Robert W. Miller, President of the Freedoms Foundation, is quoted. He says, "America was built into the greatest country the world has ever known, not through government control, regulation and handouts, bot rather through individual imagination and initiative. It has been the individual and not government that built this nation, and it will be the individual that will save it for future generations."

              Book Description

Change, Continuity and Class offers the reader the most up-to-date synthesis and critical evaluation of current and recent debates in modern British social and labor history. Issues of change and continuity, class, gender and difference, and the overall place and role of labor in modern British society constitute the central concerns of the book. The author takes issue with recent linguistic and liberal "turns," vigorously making the case for the centrality of class and change to modern history. A selection of documents usefully illustrates the main themes of the book.

Many women would say that the notion of ¿clueless men¿ is as redundant as ¿cold snow¿ or ¿expensive yacht.¿ If that¿s true, then men everywhere stand to benefit from the clever and lighthearted advice within Chicks Dig Fries: A Guide for Clueless Men. After years of trial-and-error dating, author Bob Mathews shares his hard-fought wisdom in this illustrated guide to what women want most from men. I love Tim Mcgraw, so I got this book to read about him. What I found was a unique story of how an album was made, and the people that worked to make it. It gives a behinds the scenes look at the relationship of a band.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Mix of Villians.......2003-03-28

I remember buying the 2e book of the same (similar name) many years back and hoping it would give me some pre-made, backgrounded bad guys (and girls) that I could slot into my campaigns...and how dissapointed I was...Bastion Press have come up with the exact product I was hoping to see last time out, detailed villains from front to back with a small section on new magic items and creatures, the majority of the book is dedicated to the Villians, with about 3-4 pages for each one covering their stats, spells, skills, equipments, traits and history. On top of this there are some excellent tips for each Villian on how to insert that character into various levels of play to make it challenging for all levels of players. The levels of the villians also range greatly and mean there is something for everyone, art work is great and page layout is up to Bastions usual high standards. Well worth the cost.

                      Book Description

"A great adventure story."—Dava Sobel, New York Times Book Review

This wonderfully written book tells of the first Herculean expeditions to Antarctica, from astronomer Edmond Halley's 1699 voyage in the Paramore to the sealer John Balleny's 1839 excursion in the Eliza Scott, all in search of land, glory, fur, science, and profit. Life was harsh: crews had poor provisions and inadequate clothing, and scurvy was a constant threat. With unreliable—often homemade—charts, these intrepid explorers sailed in the stormy waters of the Southern Ocean below the Convergence, that sea frontier marking the boundary between the freezing Antarctic waters and the warmer sub-Antarctic seas. These men were the first to discover and exploit a new continent, which was not the verdant southern island they had imagined but an inhospitable expanse of rock and ice, ringed by pack ice and icebergs: Antarctica. 18 illustrations, 15 maps.

Beginning with Ptolemey and all the way up to the first siting of the Ant- arctic Continent, Gurney does a yeoman's job of presenting the finds and ever expanding knowledge of the Southern Ocean. As a sailor and scientist, Gurney presents both the good and bad when discussing the voyages of discovery of such men as Captains Cook and Bellinghausen; versus the luck and scandals of the sealers and whalers.

Each discovery builds on the previous findings and Gurney explains not only what the political consequences were but also the economic impacts. The sad part of this documentation is the annihilation of first the fur seals and then the other seals for the hides and oil, and then onto the whales. The destruction was so complete, that it is only now, one hundred years after the ending of the trade that the populations are back up to their pre-1800 numbers.

What I found most gratifying was Gurney's narrative as to what happened to the 'discoverers' later in life. Most died young, some from disease and quite a number of others (including Cook) where killed by natives of the islands they discovered. It's only fitting in a way, since their discoveries contributed to the destruction of so many of the native culture (such as Tahiti and Tierra del Fuego).

For whatever reason, recent book reviewers try to relate any nautical book to Patrick O'Brien's fiction. This is akin to relating the taste of any strange mystery meat to the taste of chicken. There is absolutely no relationship between the present book and O'Brien's fiction. One can wonder if some reviewers actually read the books they review. Having said that -

The book provides an interesting overview of early Antarctic exploration, both planned and accidental. There is a chapter on scurvy, the bane of historic long sea voyages, with indications of the various means used for prevention - as usual, politics got in the way of common sense (the British government used lime juice controlled by British interests instead of the more effective lemon juice controlled by Spanish interests) and the government was slow to adopt what was being routinely used in the private sector. There is also a chapter on the problems in finding longitude, and an overview chapter on the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic Convergence.

Accounts of the voyages begin with Edmund Halley's expedition aboard the Paramore in the closing years of the 17th century, then skip forward to the second voyage of James Cook (1772-1775). Sealers began their activities immediately after the American Revolution. One problem with scientific exploration, then as now, was that commercial interests immediately rushed in to exploit any resources discovered, initially decimating the fur seal population. John Nicol in his autobiography (see John Nicol, Mariner) mentions being aboard the Amelia (1791-1792) when they killed and skinned 30,000 seals at the Island of Lopex (Lobos Island in northern Peru). The sealers added some knowledge, but mainly to identify sealing grounds. There are some comments about diet - people commonly ate penguins among other things.

People carrying out research are familiar with dealing with bureaucracies that want proposals two or three years in advance with an indication of what discoveries will be made before the research is conducted. Consequently, real discoveries are often unfunded, i.e., it is work carried out on the side while carrying out other funded work. William Smith commanded the merchant ship Williams on a voyage from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso when he discovered the South Shetland Islands, somewhat by accident, early in 1819 while sailing westward around Cape Horn. On a subsequent voyage around the Horn that same year, he made an unauthorized deviation in his route to go south for further exploration (insurance companies tended to forbid such deviations). After he reported his discoveries, the Royal Navy chartered the Williams later that same year and, under the command of Edward Bransfield, made the first observations of the mountain ranges on the Antarctic Peninsula and sailed a short distance into the Weddell Sea (the British lost Bransfield's journal). The immediate rush of sealers into the area resulted in the slaughtering of an estimated half million seals during the 1820-1821 season. Forty sealing ships visited the islands during the 1821-1822 season and essentially exterminated the remaining seals. William Smith eventually died in poverty in an almshouse.

The book goes on to discuss the voyages of James Clark Ross, James Weddell, and others up through 1839, with some mention of later expeditions. It provides a good description of the early Antarctic explorers and their voyages through the ice and freezing temperatures.

After decades of reading daily, this is the first book I have ever read that when I finished, I immediately turned to the first page and started my second reading. For anyone interested in Antartica, this book is a must, and it is very well written. It's about courage, determination, the environment and maybe most of all about geometry.

4 out of 5 stars Well written and informative.......2000-10-22

Every fan of Antarctic exploration should read this book. It is a great tribute to those who came so many years before Shackleton, Scott and others into this completely unknown part of our world. The accounts are vivid and often times humorous, in spite of the incredible hardships these men endured. Although this might be considered difficult subject matter, the author does a great job of telling each story of adventure in a compelling and griping manner. We owe much to these men for their leadership, courage and vision. The account of Captain Cook is particularly good. What a great leader! This is a good addition for all you arm-chair explorers.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed, gripping reading.......2000-08-22

In an age where the entire planet hads been mapped from space it's hard to realize that there was a time, not that long ago, when the existence of a Southern continent was still a matter of speculation and doubt. Gurney's book beins with voyages of the Dutch East India company, skirting the South polar regions around the beginning of the 17th century and ends with the complete maping of the coast of Antarctica in the mid-19th. Along the way are detailed stories not only of the early polar explorers, but scores of detailed asides on such diverse topics as the food and other provisions used by sailors, the problem of scurvy, the history of the rum ration, and the story of John Harrsion and his clocks that made detailed navigation and mapping possible. An excellent choice for fans of sailing, history, discovery or geography.

Today, scientists regularly bivouac for months on end in the vast frozen wastes of Antarctica, and adventurous travelers can even find tours to take them to the bottom of the world. But it was not so long ago that a voyage to the South Pole was a perilous undertaking, one that required tremendous courage, stamina, and skill. Long before explorers actually saw this frozen continent, its existence was posited by geographers, though 18th-century seafarers ventured no further than the ring of cold air and icy water, the Antarctic Convergence, which surrounded it. The discovery and exploitation of Antarctica is the subject of Alan Gurney's book, Below the Convergence.

In addition to chronicling the voyages and adventures of some of history's most colorful explorers, including Captain James Cook, Gurney provides a wealth of information. He details the average sailor's life on-board, the rivalry between seal hunters, and the ingenious solutions that resourceful voyagers devised for knotty problems like shipwreck, scurvy, and even lovesickness. Fascinating, exciting, at times lyrical, Gurney's literary journey is a trip worth taking.

Most of all, this is a book about history and not about the men engaged in it. This book clearly covers the early history of Artic exploration, of the historic events of men and ships discovering and reaching the Artic. The detail is great and complete.

I ding this book one star because it leaves off the human element where more of the interest and drama lay. Artic exploration is full or great tales, of Scott and Shackelton and the like, the human dimension and cost of exploring the artic. This book concentrates on the historic events, not the people. Therefore, at times, the book is a bit dense and uninteresting to all but the most ardent arm-chair polar explorers. For instance, this book discussing Captain Gray's sails in the southern ocean, but didn't go into his interactions that made him the legend that he is today.

This is indeed a good book, well researched and full of detail. However, unless you're really interested, all of the detail can be a bit overwhealming and the historic accounts become dry unless you're really into the subject matter.

The subject-matter may seem a narrow historical theme but the great joy of this book is how well it relates to wider concerns and themes. It is superbly written (as well as being an excellent example of a well-produced book, with apposite text illustrations, maps and a good index). The passage on pp 59 to 61 of the ecology of the Southern Ocean gives a succinct and witty account of the food-chain and ends with a paragraph in celebration of the whales that have survived (just) the whalers which followed in the wake of the great discoverers. There are accounts to appeal to island-lovers of the earliest contacts with the wonderful remote islands of the Southern Ocean. Readers of The Times (London) will find good historial material here about Kerguelen (Desolation) Island to which one of the paper's best columnists (Matthew Parris) has just set off. No surprise to me that the author, Alan Gurney lives on a lovely and historic Scottish island, Islay. Read his book with a fine malt whisky from Islay close to hand. You can then regularly toast the many fine descriptive passages (both his own and in quotations from his sources, which he uses with great skill) and his narrative skill in telling an exciting story.

5 out of 5 stars A sailors praise for a sailors worthy work........1999-09-20

My brother, a 20th Century racing sailor extradordinaire, gave me this book while I was home from the sea for a week last Christmas. I have nothing but praise for Mr. Gurney's engaging and effortless prose and thoroughly enjoyed every moment in the frigid southern seas as my ship sailed over the Atlantic. There is something very appropriate in reading this book while ghosting along of an evening under topsails aboard a square rigged ship. Those hard and corageous men (perhaps foolish and motivated more by profit upon the hapless seal) cause a modern throw-back to admire their skill and endurance. Even more, lying comfortable & safe tucked into a climate controled cabin aboard a 350 foot square-rigged ship, I found the romance in Gurney's writing intoxicating. Here is an insight into our own seafaring history, of men long forgot who paved the way for the demystification of our small world.

An engrossing and satisfying read that everyone should devour.

As a land-lubber I didn't know whether I would enjoy this book, but after completing it today (31st Dec 1998), I find myself contemplating the Antarctic summer! The book is scientifically very sound on many technical subjects, but will delight all readers. The sailor, naval architect, historian, naturalist, marine surveyor, and navy-man will particularly appreciate the erudition of Mr. Gurney. No-one will feel left-out! Mr.Gurney has taken the cream of perhaps 200-250 books and condensed it into a single superbly written volume. Save yourself the reading and read this one volume; it is very well constructed and will whet the appetite for perhaps further literary exploration or even real exploration (or at least maybe (ahem) "soft exploration" aboard a southern cruise-ship). I particularly liked the hand-drawn maps at the back although I know nothing about land-surveying. Let's hope that Mr. Gurney will produce further works like this one which greatly enhanced my knowledge in many areas. By the way, the title of book was meaningless to me before I read it, and I think the author could have chosen a more "saleable" title, because the book will be loved by many who don't have a clue what this is.

5 out of 5 stars Once Upon a Time in the West.......2006-06-30

Once upon a time in the West, a man named William Gilpin was blown westward along with an expedition of John Fremont that took him as far as Walla Walla, Wash. In 1846 he fought in the Mexican War. In 1861 he went to Washington, DC, after Abraham Lincoln was elected. Later he became the first territorial governor of Colorado. Once upon a time, Gilpin saw the land beyond the 100th meridian (which runs through the center of Nebraska and Kansas) through a mystical fervor. The semiarid lands were no desert, but a pastoral Canaan. Agriculture would be effortless. All that was needed was the plow break the soil so that rain would naturally follow.

At the same time that Gilpin was convincing the country that the West was a Biblical Paradise, an exploration party headed by John Wesley Powell was camped a few miles from Cheyenne, Wyoming. It was 1868. At this time Powell was not the pioneer that Gilpin was, and he was 34 compared to Gilpin's 55. Powell's interests were always varied. In 1860 his *mollusk* collection won awards at the Illinois State Agricultural Society fair. In 1861, he volunteered to join the army in the Civil War. Within six months he rose through the ranks to become a captain, an expert on *fortifications*. In April of 1862, Powell lost an arm due to a Minie ball at Shiloh. Powell continued through the war. In 1865, Powell began a professorship in *geology* at Wesleyan.

Powell began his exploration of the Green and Colorado rivers on July 6,1869. On August 30, 1869, only six of nine men and two of four boats managed to go all the way through the Grand Canyon to come out near Yuma, Az. The rest of the Colorado had already been explored. In a few short months, John Wesley Powell had gathered enough data to challenge Gilpin's portrayal of the West. For the rest of his life, he would try to convince Congress of what he had learned about the proper way to treat the land beyond the 100th meridian.

Powell's geological and *ethnological* work and his study of Native American *languages* continue today to form the basis for our understanding of these subjects for southern Utah and northern Arizona.

                            5 out of 5 stars Powell's Vision - Ageless and Far-reaching .......2006-01-20

I re-read this book and Powell's own "Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons" over the Holidays and have decided that these 2 books are absolutely inseparable. You must read both and I'm glad to see that Amazon offers a special deal for the purchase of these 2 books together. In my opinion, you should read Powell's "Exploration..." first and then read Stegner's book. Stegner's book is very readable but I hesitate to call it an easy read. While you are reading this book, you have to stop now and then to absorb and reflect on the opinions, actions, and counteractions of that particular moment. Everything must be placed in some historical, political, and personal context (3 dimensions which necessitate contemplation by the reader). Stegner does a wonderful job in maintaining the general flow of the text and he supplies an extensive listing of notes for those who want more information and detail. In my opinion, this is a wonderful book about a brilliant man with incredible foresight. Now, it seems that we need a beacon like Powell warning the Easterners about their relentless development of land with no thought or planning on the impact to their water resources and water quality. Most folks in the Eastern U.S. take their water resources for granted. We need a modern day Powell to warn us about the consequences of increased impervious area before its too late.

4 out of 5 stars Powell cries out to today's West through Stegner's voice.......2006-01-04

Almost everything that could be done wrong in the development of the modern American West (and not just the Rockies westward, but the High Plains as well) was warned against by Maj. John Wesley Powell, but done anyway by the federal government and various states.

The result? Water crises, fights over water rights, lying, chicanery and stealing in the name of water rights, corporate farms squeezing out small farmers, urban sprawl and smog in the middle of deserts, dust bowls and more, were either forseen or hinted at by Powell.

The 100th meridian of latitude is the U.S.'s "dry line." Areas to the west, generally, before you get to the Pacific Coast, average less than 20 inches of rain a year. Hence the title, and the basis of Powell's warnings.

And, AND, all of that came after this one-armed Civil War veteran led the first navigation of the entire whitewater section of the Colorado, actually starting on the Green River in Wyoming and running all the way down past the Grand Canyon. (Despite some claims otherwise, it seems pretty clear James White did NOT do this.)

It was this trip, in the name of scientific research, that gave Powell his standing to eventually found the Bureau of Ethnography, do further Western research and make some top-notch recommendations for the development of the west.

The reason I didn't five-star this is that I would like to have seen a little more depth to Powell's post-exploration career. Also, a little more personality profile of Powell's struggle with disappointment over the Newlands Act and other repudiation of his ideas would have been nice.

True, Stegner may not be a professional historian, but it would have been nice to see him incorporate this.

To get an idea of what I mean by the end of this critique, please read Donald Worster's "River Running West." Also, Worster provides a bit of corrective to Stegner's occasional near-hagiographical approach to Powell.

4 out of 5 stars A good book by a cranky old guy.......2005-10-07

This is an excellent biography of John Wesley Powell--exlorer, geologist, scientist, writer, and politician.
Anyone who reads this is sure to increase the amount they know about this historic figure, and about the West in general as the stories of each are inextricably tangled. The book excels at its account of John Wesley Powell's life AFTER his famous trips down the Colorado River, and does a great job of describing Powell's role in the battle against over-populating the West.
If the book has faults though, they lie in that many of Stegner's sources have since been expounded upon or dismissed entirely, and so the facts in this book aren't entirely current. Also, Stegner dismisses too quickly the merits of the story of James White, a man who very possibly went down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon two years before Powell did.
And, it's kind of ridiculous how Stegner criticizes Powell's second expedition's photos as if they were famous works and art: This photo "is marred by too much nondescipt low-water beach in the foreground," and that sort of thing.
This is a great book for anyone interested in John Wesley Powell or the Colorado River. It's possibly Stegner's best nonfiction work, though "Mormon Country" is good as well.
For another great account of John Wesley Powell, read "Down the Great Unknown" by Edward Dolnick.
Or, for a half-decent book about Wallace Stegner's peculiarly white view of the American West, read, "'Why I Can't Read Wallace Stegner' and Other Essays" by Elizabeth Cook-Lynn. That one's kind of interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Educational but not boring.......2003-03-15

I kept waiting for this book to get boring. It has all the potential to be boring. But it's not. It's an excellent introduction to the history of the West. I learned little tidbits about all sorts of varied subjects - Native American tribes, government, the history of the USGS. Stegner does get a little too wrapped up in the details at a couple points, especially when he gets into all the wrangling in Congress over Powell's various ventures, but in general it's an excellent book.
