Book Description
This book provides an in-depth analysis of an incumbent worker training program funded through California's unemployment insurance taxes. The Employment Training Panel (ETP) Program, the largest such program in the nation, is somewhat novel in that it is a preventive training program that offers additional skills to the employed in the hope of preventing firms from abandoning the state's economy or laying off workers.
The authors combine a brief history of the ETP program, case studies, and quantitative analysis to evaluate the impacts of the program. In addition, they discuss and demonstrate effective evaluation methods, showing how the method they use can offer insights into the workings and impact of a variety of complex public programs and how it can generate clear public policy recommendations. The authors also provide guidance for policymakers and researchers interested in the methodological pitfalls associated with such evaluations.

Edited by Klaus J. Bade This volume summarises the debate about the causes of population changes, labour and migration in Germany. The authors show that the large influx of foreign workers during the last twenty-five years is only the latest manifestation of a long-term trend whose roots can be traced as far back as the early 19th century.

Book Description
Here are 50 years of Rock Roll, from Chuck Berry to the Beatles to Beck, with an introduction by Dick Clark. On March 21, 1952, rock roll was forged in fire as Alan Freeds Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland ended up in a riot when frenzied fans stormed the arena. There was a new sound and it caused an entirely new reaction: loud, passionate, no-holds-barred, Katie-bar-the-door.This was rock roll, and even as things were getting out of hand in Cleveland, a producer named Sam Phillips was debuting his Sun record label in Memphis, the future launching pad for Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and, of course, the King, Elvis Presley. In the 1960s came the Beatles. Bob Dylan counseled Dont Look Back, and rock never did, as the music defined the times: the Whos My Generation, the Rolling Stones Street Fighting Man, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Youngs Woodstock.Today, rock lives on, and not just in reunions of KISS and Yes, nor in age-defying gigs by Aerosmith. It has seeped into our culture and into the new music. It changed America then, and, at 50, it continues to do so.

Book Description
Gene Technology and Social Acceptance uses gene technology to illustrate the complex issues that arise when a new technology appears in society. The authors examine the economic, legislative, environmental, social, ethical and philosophical issues that accompany a new technology that brings new knowledge and requires new skills that displace old ways of thinking and acting. This creates a paradigm shift that brings a new structure to society, bringing new laws, values, economic alliances, and new social dilemmas. The authors suggest ways of achieving social acceptance of gene technology and other new technologies. They devise methods of applying critical analysis to understand the motivation of those affected so that the decision-making process of those in society can be understood. Thus, those introducing the technology can reassess their values, reconsider the distribution of resources, and set new priorities.
Customer Reviews:
Navigating the genetic maze.......2001-05-01
The ducks on the cover might lead one to assume that this is a young person's guide, but this assumption is far from the truth. It takes the reader skillfully and deftly through the problems - if only Monsanto had read this before they attempted to bulldoze their product on the world, they would have been far better prepared to get the informed acceptance of their public, instead of the flat denial that eventually came. Well-researched and replete with footnotes, this is evidently a work of scholarship to rely on. As with any jointly-written book, there is a dichotomy in style. Liew's deft and sure prose contrasts pitilessly with von Wartburg's lourd Germanic hammerings - not to the point of making it unreadable, but certainly to making these passages difficult on the ear. The firm smack of editing might well have helped, but this advice comes too late for the publisher, and its lack gives this admirable book its four stars, rather than the five it merits.

Customer Reviews:
A must-have for Green Acres fans!.......2005-07-20
Once again Stephen Cox writes an amazing book! Like its "siblings", this book is full of incredible photographs, rare trivia and interesting tid-bits. The painstaking research is always evident in this author's books. If you love Oliver, Lisa, Fred Ziffel and gang, then you're going to love this book!
A fun book to own.......2004-02-28
A sneak peek behind the Green Acres phenomenon. Contains exclusive interviews, publicity photos, trivia & episode guide.
The Low-down on our favorite small town........2001-04-28
The Hooterville Handbook gives the reader unknown knowledge about the creation, and development of one of the kookiest sitcoms, "Green Acres". It supplies various essays regarding the impact of and interesting things about Hootervile (also Green Acres) and all of its locals. What was so special about Arnold the pig? WAS that salesman married or not? Such pressing questions are masterfully answered by Mr. Cox. Only one glitch, that seems to occur in most of Cox's Classic TV books; he doesn't seem to enjoy writing, watching, or doing anything involving his profession. He writes with a cold air of superiority, which could come across as professional, or rudely distant. Overall, however, this book was fascinating, a good read, and had the insights of the cast, crew, and random essay writers.
Viva Hooterville!.......2000-05-12
I saw Eddie Albert signing a copy of this book at a nostalgia event in Los Angeles in 1998 and I had to go out and buy this book. It's fantastic. You will need no other book to find out about this surreal and wonderful TV classic. Author Steve Cox has done a great job covering the bizarre characters and the exquisite cast of actors who made up this neat show. The photos are rare and presented in the book with a nice design and the Foreword by my favorite character, Hank Kimball, is hilarious. If you want a book about a Sixties TV show and you like Paul Henning's programs ( The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction) then you'll love this book. Don't pass it up.
A Must For The True "Green Acres" Fan........1999-08-22
I have had this book in my possession for a long time. It is a necessary tool for any one that wants to know all there is to know about "Green Acres". All of the episode descriptions, guest star information and original dates of airing are listed. There are also interviews with the cast members. Again this is a must have item.

Book Description
An intriguing look at an Internet pioneer and global powerhouse
Reaching sixty percent of all Net users, Yahoo! is one of the most popular Internet portals and one of the most successful companies in the world today. Inside Yahoo! takes readers on a fascinating journey through the thoughts and motivations behind the company. Revealing stories of on-again, off-again management, the race for innovation, and the constant focus on survival, this book will engage readers on many different levels. With access to Yahoo's top executives, author Karen Angel describes the complementary, but different styles that have made Yahoo! one of the few surviving business models in the struggling Internet sector. An informed and astute narrative traces the company's transformation from a twenty-something brainstorm to a sophisticated community to a onetime Wall Street darling that managed to ride-out the recent market shakeout. Along the way, readers will follow in the steps and missteps of this unique company and see how it keeps reinventing itself to keep ahead of a changing marketplace.
Customer Reviews:
Humorous and Informative.......2006-11-19
I like the style of the author, the reading is fun and humorous but it's full of information on how the Yahoo started and where it is heading now. I like the concept of Yang and Filo, giving to community first before making a profit. The book is definitely a keep for files and future example when building a community websites which i am now.
Nat
Name says it all.......2006-01-31
I used this book as a starting block for a thesis I am working on. The information within the book provide insight of managements ideas and fundamentals. By no means should this book be used as a guide for the Yahoo's due to the flux of the Internet. Instead it a guide to the historical reference on what makes the company tick.
After reading/studying the book, the founders principles still exist at Yahoo today... Focus on creating a social-engineering product (Yang) and consumer interface to the Web (Filo). Understanding this, recent moves by Yahoo make more since (e.g. acquisition of fliker and role out of 360.)
Furthermore, if you want to read about one of the four leaders in the Internet bubble, this is a very good book. It does a good job showing how the company ran a race against the other information providers at the time, Lycos and Excite. Finally, the author did a good job illustrating how company survived the busting of the bubble. If you have the time, and are interested in the company, it ought to be money well spent.
Interesting history, maybe a bit dusty........2005-11-12
This book is basically the history of the 500 lb gorilla of the dot-com debacle. It follows Yahoo! from its birth in a Stanford trailer up through the pits of despair in late 2001.
I personally learned quite a bit about the forces that shaped this "walking contradiction" of a company. For me (as a geek) the most interesting part was the history of what technologies and services have been rolled into the Yahoo! brand, including early plays into VoIP as far back as 1998 and Yahoo!'s short fling with adult content.
Lost a star for the (I felt) boring profusion of financial figures every few pages. Yes, the difference between GAAP and pro-forma reporting blah blah and stock rating by Bleedle and Blarney was changed fom zzzzz.... Some of this pure finance speak is obviously necessary to the story, since a lot of the action pivots on economic calamity. It just seemed that the book occasionally became the history of YHOO the stock instead of Yahoo! the company.
For "ancient history" (in Internet time) the book is a great resource. I'll still need something to fill in the gap between the ending of this book (the expectation at end of 2001 that Yahoo! would die, become irrelevant, or get acquired) through modern times. But taken for what it is, it's a handy reference.
Very Informative but lacks analysis.......2003-01-05
The author has used her sources effectively to delineate the Intenet boom and its subsequent fall, by describing Yahoo's growth from a Stanford trailer into a media company. She has captured the frenzy of the late 90's and takes the reader through the numerous accquisitions and investments in Silicon Valley. At the same time the book is an overkill with the excessive information provided and at times reads like an encyclopaedia with figures thrown in liberally. The fact that Yahoo hasn't cooperated with the author is evident in several places. Overall its a good read
A competent job, but lacks real insight.......2002-11-25
Like many other writers about technology companies, Karen Angel has simply read a lot of newspaper and magazine articles about the company, interviewed some knowledgeable outsiders (key insiders did not cooperate with her) and organized the resulting material in chronological sequence. If, like I, you are interested in learning the basic facts about Yahoo!, this book will suffice, but don't expect anything in the way of new revelations or searching analysis.
What comes across is a group of relatively bright young computer nerds who happened to be in the right place at the right time, decided that they were the Christ, and imploded from their own greed and hubris, professing all the while their personal integrity. Urrrppp!

Book Description
Discover the stories of conflict and bloodshed that spawned some of our most common phrases.
The power of the well-turned phrase to energize and sustain us has long been recognized by historians. Yet for most of us, we hear phrases or clichés throughout popular culture without the slightest idea where they came from. Now you can discover the legend and stories behind this collection of expressions all with one common factor - they originated out of conflict and war. Words of War travels through world history to identify the unique correlation between battling nations and the lasting power of words, such as:
* Back to the wall
* No firing until you see the whites of their eyes
* With blood and sweat and tears
* Thin red line
* I have not yet begun to fight
* Remember the Alamo
* The sun never set on the British Empire
* All quiet on the western front
* Tora! Tora! Tora!
* We're eyeball to eyeball
* Over the hump
* He got canned
* Blood is thicker than water
* Things went blooey
Customer Reviews:
Not a scholarly work.......1999-09-08
This not a work to be taken seriously. Instead, it is a collection of anecdotal historical sketches and chimerical observations, clumsily seamed together in superficial summations, employing a diction of storytelling vernacular which is further obscured by cliché. Readers must surmise, at best, that Weland's purpose is to glean great words out of the history of warfare.
Weland does provide some long-needed discussion of incidents perhaps treated lightly in American history texts, such as wars of the Middle Ages, or America's war with the Sioux. But sad to say, whatever good may come from this sketchy work can be more thoroughly gained from any junior high school history textbook. If it's quotes one wants, readers would be better off with James Charlton's 'The Military Quotation Book', or William J Bennet's 'Our Sacred Honor - Words of Advice from the Founders in Stories, Letters, Poems and Speeches'. From a scholastic standpoint, such a cursory treatment with little sustained clarity of perception as found in Weland's book, is not worthy of any serious student of history.

The waters surrounding the islands and shores of New York City were once an ecological treasure house, full of oysters, striped bass, seals, porpoises, and other marine species. In the 19th and 20th centuries, seemingly illimitable streams of pollutants entered these arms of the Atlantic; raw sewage, industrial wastes, pesticides, exotic species, and garbage turned the once-thriving waters--rightly called "an urban wilderness"--into a graveyard.
The damage has been so extensive, writes ichthyologist John Waldman, that New York Harbor can never return to its former biological glory. But, thanks to the work of far-seeing environmental groups and government agencies, the harbor is nonetheless regaining some of its health. Through their efforts, pollutants have been reduced, and, with cleaner waters, herons and oysters are slowly returning to their former haunts. Waldman writes of the harbor, "It is growing stronger and steadier, like the survivor of a ghastly medical accident." As our knowledge of ecosystems and watersheds grows, and with it the possibilities of environmentally sustainable agriculture and waste disposal, the waters around New York offer boundless opportunities for doing the right thing. Waldman's engaging survey of the harbor's natural and human history points the way. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Ichthyologist Waldman's survey of New York Harbor, from the 17th century, when it teemed with marine life to its rebirth today; with many old and new photographs.
Customer Reviews:
An overlooked topic finally examined.......2004-01-22
Perhaps not as much as it used to, New York City has always been dependent on its waterways. From the get-go in the early 17th Century, it was a port city. However, no sooner did development expand the city when the East and Hudson Rivers became sewers, dumping grounds for tanners, chandlers, and dyers. By the late 19th Century, the pollution extended all the way out to the Harbor, the Narrows, and then the Atlantic. John Waldman's HEARTBEATS IN THE MUCK traces this sad history and then, to the surprise of many readers, describes the comeback staged by these waterways.
In a way, this book is quite inspirational, in as much as that it gives the reader hope that, when confronted with an ecological crisis, local and state governments can and will intervene, even if it needs to be put under pressure. Villains abound, but so do heroes, and the anecdotes about local seafarers do more than just entertain; they make you proud of them for their determination.
Lastly, even to the most seasoned New Yorker, this little tome will provide information about his/her city's remarkably complex network of rivers, streams, "kills", and canals. Having grown up near the Gowanus Canal, I remember how awful it smelled even on good days. Now, it is so clean, it seems strange. In any event, Mr. Waldman deserves a great deal of credit for his dogged research and his sea legs.
New York Harbor Survives.......2000-04-27
There hasn't been such an intimate look at New York Harbor since
Joseph Mitchell's classic "The Bottom of the Harbor". John
Waldman captures the mystique and dark romance known only to a few
New York bayman. Readers will become familiar with New York events
like "Floaters week", underruns, blow out tides; fishing holes
with unlikely names such as Aquatic Appalachia, Tin Can Grounds, Acid
Grounds, and Cholera Banks; flotsam that will never be found in any
dictionary like "Coney Island Whitefish" and "blop-blops";
nautical entrepreneurs like the "Belford Pirates", illegal
pinhookers, Kenney's Killer Killifish, headboats and even an urban
sports fishing guide. John Watchman takes you to backwaters and
commercial dead ends where the "Fiftteenth Ward Smelling
Committee" once searched for the source of health-giving vapors,
sludge bubbles, perfume wagon stenches; and a criminal defense lawyer
even tried to use the black, bubbly water of the bay as a possible
neurological "The river made me do it" defense.
I spent many
of my early years wandering New York Harbor and it's many tributaries
in search of stripped bass, jacking for blue claw crabs, ice boating,
racing sailboats or simply drifting down the Harlem River on a warm
summer night listening to the urban mixture of steel bands, fire
engine horns, police sirens and elevated trains. It was a treat to
hear that you can still do many of these things and the hostilities to
this great body of water are being addressed by special people like
John Watchman. We owe him a lot.
Richard Quis now lives in Southern
California where the colorful flotsam is oranges, lemons and tennis
balls.

World political, economic, and social trends via graphics.......1998-12-15
I use this book with middle school kids. It is useful to make clear the variations between nations and peoples of the world. Examples: how old is your nation? Which nations sell or buy tobacco? Where are children poor or uneducated? What other nations have rights like ours?
