Sociology book disguised as coffee-table fare.......2002-12-29

I LOVE this book! Carol Gardner just amazes me, page after page, with her absolutely non-judgemental interviews of some of the most colorful characters in the United States.

This book is not just to read and say "Ha ha, wasn't that a good bumper sticker?" This book is about people: their sense of humor, their dreams, their dramas, their lives. Every bumper sticker page includes a photo of the person, some basic facts about them (age, occupation, favorite pastimes, etc.) and a concise interview explaining why they put the sticker on their car.

Ordering information is also included in the back for many of the featured stickers. I actually purchased "Christians - can't live with them, can't throw them to the lions anymore" from the manufacturer.

My only question is - WHERE IS BUMPER STICKER WISDOM II? The back page said it's in the works, but this book was published in 1995.

Detailed Overview of Early Prince.......2007-01-28

You will enjoy this book if you are a BIG fan of early Prince. If you only have a passing interest in Prince then this book is probably a little bit full on, a little bit too fascinated with the dates of recording and who did what on which track (as it turns out it was generally Prince who did everything on everything). The book is sub-titled: The First Decade. It covers the music of Prince up until the album Sign O the Times. If you are a fan of the later Prince and think his early stuff is naff (electronic drum machines, yuck) then this book is not for you either. The author of the book thinks that Prince has become a lot less interesting through the 90s and on.

There is always going to be one problem with writing any biography about Prince. He doesn't talk to people. You can interview musicians, friends and lovers who knew him, but he doesn't really seem to have talked to them either. The impression that these people give is of an intensely private man who lives through music. You should know this before you buy any biography of Prince. I personally don't believe that it is possible to read too much into Prince's lyrics if you are looking for biographical insights. Frankly, most of his lyrics, especially in the early days, were ridiculous. Ever since Little Richards bawled the opening of Tutti Frutti pop stars have proven you don't need to make sense to sound good.

The book has eight pages of black and white photos on standard paper that are generally unenlightening and uninteresting. There is no index. For the Prince trainspotter there are appendices at the back that list all of Prince's actions in the studio, on the stage and on record from 1975 to 1987, and the personnel involved. The review on the back of the book says that Nilsen writes with a "steady hand", and that seems a fair comment. The writing is not flashy, but the book represents a thorough run through the early Prince chronology for big fans.

this book is absolutely perfect for anyone, from the most die hard prince fans, like myself, or just someone who's interested. it has so much rare information. very detailed, very very well researched. so many comments from people who were, and some who still are, close to prince. it's also great to see such an informed prince fan write openly about prince. he doesn't hide anything, or try and make prince sound good and look good from every angle. he tells it like it is, and isn't afraid of being critical. still, in the end, this book is a fantastic tribute to a man who is a living legend. a man who has changed the face of music forever. simply amazing!

Hard to Find, But Well Worth The Hunt!.......2002-09-13

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would! I bought this book on a Friday, and could NOT put it down! It chronicles the life and times of one of the most prolific musicians of modern times. Being a long time Prince fan (from his very first album to the later years), it was difficult to read about some of the negative aspects of the Purple One's personality, but hey, he's human and errs like the rest of us.

If you are an aspiring musician, consider this book the Bible on everthing concerning the music business. If you're a long time Prince fan such as myself, it's a must have. If you're neither and still interested, you'll find it a testament to the fact that we are, and become, what we think we are. The previous poster who said that it will make you want to "go out and do something bold with your life" is RIGHT ON TARGET!

Only one question remains: WHEN'S THE SEQUEL?

Beautiful.......2007-10-04

Im 24 , And most of what I recall about Night Gallery was what I initially saw chopped up on the sci-fi channel when I'd stay up late during my summer breaks . Needless to say when the first season dvd came out, I purchased without hesitation. I loved it. They just dont make TV shows like it anymore folks, and while it may not be as highly regarded as The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery holds a special place in my heart. So I was very frustrated when I looked around the net for information and came up a little less than empty handed for my troubles. I stumbled upon this book one night while trying to see if there was a release date for season 2 (there isn't) and at first worried that the book wouldn't warrant the 54$ price tag ...Well I couldn't have been more wrong in my assumption. If you are a fan of the series this book is worth well over that. This book covers almost every single aspect of the show from its inception to the years following its cancellation, and everything in between. You can tell from reading this the authors really took the time and care to gather information that this often misunderstood series deserves . I dont regret this purchase at all. It'll make a beautiful addition to any classic horror, or just television in general fan's bookshelf.

The authors, Jim Benson and Scott Skelton, have not only provided exhaustive information on every episode of this somewhat neglected show; their observations are very insightful and give the reader a brand new appreciation for all the stories and for Rod Serling's genius. A good reference, a great read and a must for any Serling fan's library.

Wonderful Book on a great TV show!.......2007-01-10

Night Gallery was on when I was ten years old. It scared and delighted me at the same time. Later I saw it on the Sci-Fi channel. This was not the Night Gallery I remember. A very good friend of mine sent me the entire 2nd and third season on DVD, uncut.(I bought season 1 right here on Amazon). Here was Night Gallery again! This book is the definitive version of the story behind this wonderful television series,and it is the perfect companion to the show. I will go out on a limb here and say that Night Gallery (seasons 1 & 2) compares to and even excels Twilight Zone. A must read for anyone intersested in this very unique television show.

Rod Serling fans will absolutely love this book!.......2003-11-29

Wow! I recieved this book last Christmas and this was probably my favorite gift I recieved. There is soooooooo much information and is a true delight to read. I might not be your average Night Gallery fan considering I was born several years after the show went off, but in a short time due to cable reruns and ordering the Columbia House videos I have fell in love with the show. It is now tied with The Twilght Zone as my favorite show.

Thank you authors for all the hard work. I can't believe this show is so underrated. It had so much going for it. Excellent writing, acting, art direction, class, ect... Night Gallery's finest stood neck and neck with the best episodes of Zone. Deliveries in the Rear, The Caterpillar, A Question of Fear, Return of the Sorcerer, The Doll, They're Tearing Down Tim Riley's Bar, and A Feast of Blood are just as excellent as It's a Good Life, The Masks, The Silence, The Howling Man, The Living Doll, A Game of Pool, and To Serve Man.

Only two things do I disagree with the authors' views of the show are 1) I think the 3rd season was a little better than the reviews they gave it and 2) "The black out" skits were overall enjoyable and gave the show a distinctive feel that seperated it from Zone's vibe.

I know it's a matter of opinion, but I feel many third season segments are short changed by a half star sometimes even a full star than what they are given. Segmenst like The Other Way Out, Something in the Woodwork, Rare Objects and such I like more than some of the ***.5 and **** segments from the pilot and second season.

The "black outs" were sometimes stupid and goofy, but at least they were short and sometimes put a smile on your face. While, some of the longer bad segments like The Diffrent Ones, The Diary, and Tell David are just too long for the quality of material in it. I just wish that they would have made some "black outs" that were less comedy driven and more horror in nature.

Overall,I love this book. Listen. If you know anyone who loves Rod Serling or Night Gallery than this will make an excellent gift for the Holidays or a birthday. The book is beautiful in its depth. Plus, unlike Marc Scott Zicree's The Twilight Zone Companion you can tell these guys actually love the show. A great look behind the scenes of a TV show!.......2002-02-06

When I was a little boy I LOVED this show,being a horror nut.Well,I'm still a horror nut,and I only had vague memories of it,only that it was presented by Rod Serling.Hey,Twilight Zone still airs and is awesome,so NG should be as well.I excitedly sent off for this book,and it IS great!Lovingly written,the book unravels the NG story in a highly interesting and informative manner.BUT!The Mystery Channel started showing all the restored episodes and I saw the show as a horrible,dated mess!Buy this book,even if,like me,you shudder at NG.Buy it for the great info on Serling.
PS:It is now many months later and Mystery channel isn't showing NG now,but they will in a couple weeks.I'm looking forward to seeing them all again.Heck,it's not so bad!

JCL is the stuff of nightmares for many programmers and operators. This book explains JCL in such a way as to have it make sense.

This book will help you learn how to to tell the IBM MVS mainframe computer how and when to execute your programs. To do this you use a language called JCL, for Job Control Language. You use JCL to tell the mainframe how much memory and other resources your programs will need, how long each program should be allowed to run, what order to run the programs in, where to get the input data, where to put the output data, and so on. JCL controls almost everything related to running programs on MVS.

If you have a comfortable understanding of ordinary English language and are looking for a quick and easy way to learn JCL, this book is for you.

If you already know a little JCL and what you really want is a handy reference guide to bail you out on commonly occurring problems with JCL, you're in luck again, this book is for you there too.

If you're looking for an introduction to some of the more advanced and obscure tricks you might have seen people use in MVS, you guessed it, this book is for you on that as well.

How can this book do all that at once? Because, contrary to its reputation, JCL is not particularly difficult; it just has esoteric aspects that make it seem difficult if you have nobody to explain things. Once explained, all seems clear, as with most things.

This book can be used as a reference book, there are numerous examples and the index will assist you in finding what you are looking for when you need to find a solution to a problem. You can also read the book as an introductory text, from start to finish. Things are explained in plain ordinary language, so even if you have never before seen one line of JCL, you should have no trouble with the text; and by the time you get halfway through the book people should be starting to see you as an expert, probably to your great surprise. When you read the book straight through in this way, you will come across a lot of obscure but useful information to help you in your routine use of MVS.

JCL is a language like any other. If you travel to an area where you do not speak the language, you get a certain amount of satisfaction when you are able to make yourself understood using that language, be it to make a phone call, or ask for directions, or just to ask the price of something. The more you use the language the more you feel at ease using it. Having good guidebooks saves you a lot of learning time. And who doesn't love it when other people start mistaking us for locals and asking us the directions? That's the same sort of feeling you'll get the first few times your co-workers ask you to help them with their JCL problems; and that will start happening a lot sooner than you might think, because,contrary to appearances, most of them don't know much more about it than you do now. That's why they have so much trouble explaining it to you. That's why you want a good book on it now.

JCL is not generally taught in schools and Universities, so people who need to use JCL generally have to learn it on the job. For the most part they have a difficult time, largely because the people they learn from don't have a good grounding in JCL either. Those other people only learned enough to get by when doing a few things they needed to do; and those few things may not be the same things you need to do now. So your co-workers can be of only limited help to you with learning JCL.

Whether your job is programming, operations, or anything else, whatever your reason for wanting to learn JCL, this book is designed to help you. It will help you learn JCL in the first place and thereafter it will be a useful reference you can keep coming back to, like an old friend, to help you out when you get into trouble.

The book is organized into four main sections. 'Section 1. Getting Started' is made up of Chapters 1 and 2. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the history of JCL and Chapter 2 explains the basic structure of the language. Yes JCL does have a language structure, and when you understand that structure you will learn the language much more quickly and it will start to make sense. You might skip Chapter 1, but read Chapter 2.

`Section 2. The Data' spans Chapters 3 through 10. This section explains how data is organized on MVS and how to define and manipulate collections of data. Many people make their first changes to JCL because there is a requirement to have a program run with different data than usual. For example, if a program has been using a certain data file for reference purposes, say a list of products and the associated prices, and one day for some reason a different reference file has to be substituted, say a new price list has come out, then a simple change to the JCL can bring the new file into use. You will learn how to make this type of change, and many others, in Section 2.

`Section 3. Running the programs' is Chapters 11 through 14. This section will give you information about controlling the conditions of program execution (how much time and memory your program will be allowed to use, dependencies on other programs finishing first, and so on) and about creating your own JCL Procedures. A JCL Procedure (or PROC) is a collection of JCL put together for some repeatedly occurring purpose, like a program written in JCL. This can be a powerful tool for automating processes under MVS.

`Section 4. Advanced JCL' is composed of Chapters 15 through 20. This section is particularly useful for those who want to know some of the more advanced (and yes, usually esoteric) aspects of JCL. There is also a Chapter that discusses some common standard programs you will use under MVS -- such as the various Utility programs you can use to copy data, sort data, rename files, extend or compress or merge files, and so on.

By the way, MVS/ESA is covered in the book. The new JCL features of ESA are explained and examples are provided. You will be pleasantly surprised how easy JCL actually is to learn.
