Customer Reviews:
Metheny's Best Album Transcribed For You!.......2006-09-07
Seems extremly accurate. If your gonna go through all his latest music books, you should start from the beginning, this is it. The notes aren't so hard,it's all about the fingerings. I wouldn't touch something like "Question & Answer" before starting with this excellent book, capturing the spirit of Pat Metheny.
PS-
Where's Jaco's part?
Amazingly Accurate.......2005-10-22
The guy that transposed this for Hal Leonard (Alejandro Mora) is very accurate. He got every nuance of every note on the title track. 'Bright Size Life' is a low key modal jam in D. Eventually you'd play this song your own way but learning Pat's licks 1st would be prudent. This song could easily be 'overplayed' and the restraint Pat shows on the tune is admirable. It's all beautifully tabbed out for guitarists. Jaco's bass parts aren't. That isn't too clear up front so I'll clear it up with this review. Pat's music on this record sounds easy but if you try to play along you'll find it's anything but. 'Omaha Celebration' is an example of a tough chordal song with some tricky rhythms. In the middle he does a free form jam with Jaco and then returns to the chordal 'head' to conclude. 'Sirabhorn' is a haunting/beautiful piece played on an electric 12 string with Jaco's chorused bass adding surreal textures. It's one of just a few tunes where Pat plays more than 1 part,(he overdubs the lead lines which are in the book as well). 'Missouri Uncompromised' is for me the most impressive song with it's tricky, fast phrases that just keep going and going. The'head' is tricky as heck and then it just gets progressively better.'Broadway Blues', the Ornette Coleman cover is also a great licked jazz club trio jam. Wow ! This book should be included in college jazz studies for improvisational guitarists! My only critcism and it could be partially the year of release 1976 when groups like Kansas, Neil Young and Steely Dan were huge, is 'Midwestern Night's Dream' which seems gratuitously somber with not the musical interest or the haunting beauty of 'Sirabhorn'. 'Sirabhorn' would be a stretch to play in a jazz club but 'Dream' would be out of the question.

Ladislaus M. Semali and Joe L. Kincheloe's edited book, What is Indigenous Knowledge?: Voices from the Academy not only exposes the fault lines of modernist grand narratives, but also illuminates, in a vivid and direct way, what it means to come to subjectivity in the margins. The international panel of contributors from both industrialized and developing countries, led by Semali and Kincheloe, injects a dramatic dynamic into the analysis of knowledge production and the rules of scholarship, opening new avenues for discussion in education, philosophy, cultural studies, as well as in other important fields.

Description:
Sierra Leone has profound and detailed indigenous knowledge systems that are relevant for cultural, medical, economic and spiritual development. Since all societies exist in a world of ecological processes and environmental events the collection, organization and dissemination of that knowledge especially by public librarians so that it can be used by as many people as possible, is crucial. Invariably this article explores the range of indigenous knowledge systems in Sierra Leone and the role public librarians should play in managing them in their libraries.

Book Description
This heavily illustrated history traces the development of AM radio in the New York metropolitan area. While technical information and program schedules are fully covered, the work also provides unique insight into radio's influence on the development of the city. The photographs reinforce the sense of change brought about by the medium.
Customer Reviews:
One of the most important books on the history of radio.......2001-01-09
There are probably a dozen or so books that I've read and re-read cover to cover in one siting. I am adding Kanze and Sulek's to that pile, making it a super baker's dozen. It's a solid, well written text, highlighted with great pictures and memorabilia about radio's AM history in metro #1. My only regret for the radio historian is that there isn't one for all the other major metro areas like Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas. I look forward to their FM version. Gotta have it. Bob Donnelly

New York AM radio is alive once again in this nice pictorial.......1999-03-27
Growing up in New York City, I lived the New York AM radio experience. My era was 1010 WINS with "Murray the K" and Jack Lacy. Occasionally I would dial up to Peter Tripp on WMGM-1050 or down to the "sweatshirt station", WMCA (Yeah-yeah). As I moved through adolescence music began to disappear from New York AM. Soon all we had left was WABC-Musicradio 77. That too would eventually go to radio heaven.
Bill Jaker's fantastic compilation takes us behind the New York radio scene. It puts faces to the voices of the disk jockeys who woke us up each day. Those who sat next to us on the beach blanket at Coney Island on a warm summer afternoon, and to the ones who rocked us to sleep each night. They all come back to life once again thanks to Bill Jaker and his friends.
But that's not all. You'll learn all about the storied history of the #1 radio market in the world. All the great radio stations of the 50's and 60's, and about stations you never even heard of. If you ever turned on a radio in New York, waited patiently for the tubes to glow and wondered who are these guys who keep playing the music I love, this book is for you. Despite what others say, you can go back in time, and this book will take you there. Enjoy! I did.
Book Description
As dynamic, database-driven Web sites become the standard, more and more nonprogrammers just like yourself are being forced to work with database information and create and edit database objects. With SQL and this task-based guide to it, you can do it too--
no programming experience required!
After going over the relational database model and SQL syntax in the first few chapters, veteran author
Chris Fehily launches into the tasks that will get you comfortable with SQL fast. In addition to explaining SQL basics, this updated reference covers the ANSI SQL:2003 standard and contains a wealth of brand-new information, including a new chapter on set operations and common tasks, well-placed optimization tips to make your queries run fast, sidebars on advanced topics, and added IBM DB2 coverage.
Best of all, the book's examples were tested on the latest versions of Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, IBM DB2, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. On the companion Web site, you can download the SQL scripts and sample database for all these systems and put your knowledge to work immediately on a real database..
Customer Reviews:
Perfect SQL classroom text.......2007-07-21
I am an IT instructor and don't usually have good things to say about computer books. But I couldn't keep quiet about this book which works well in my SQL for SQL Server class and would work just as well in a SQL for MySQL class. Beginning students don't have many choices in SQL books that help them learn the ropes and then don't stop at the definition / syntax level. After several other tries, this one hit the sweet spot of practicality, theory, data, examples, curriculum breadth for a basic SQL course, depth for advanced students, and supplemental information.
A rather convoluted dissapointment .......2007-04-02
Sadly this book is simply to convoluted to be of much help. Perhaps the books scope (SQL in general) is the books weakest point. It often seems like more time is spent explaining the differences between DBMS's than discussing the fundamentals of SQL. My advice is stay away from this book and instead go with one tailored for your DBMS.
SQL book that requires leg work.......2007-01-11
This SQL book is a good big-picture book when it comes to the novice user. Code segments are provided for most of the big DBMS programs (ie. Microsoft SQL, MySQL, Oracle, etc). Variations in command usage can be lost when using this book if you are not careful. Overall, this is a good book for an academic setting where additional material will be provided.
Awesome Book.......2006-11-09
I tell all the beginners to set aside all other books and read ONLY THIS ONE.
After working for more than 5 years in databases, still find myself digging into it now and then.
Great SQL Book.......2006-02-09
I really love this book because it blends the right amount of theory and practicality. This book is packed with great examples showing not only the SQL that generates the query but also the query results.
How many other SQL books provide examples in SQL Server, Access, Oracle, DB2 and MySQL?
And get this, all in just a little over 400 pages!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-05-28
This book is excellent for someone with no experience with MySQL. (Like Me!) It steps you through installation, setup, and use without assuming prior knowledge.
Great Introduction and Reference for MySQL.......2006-06-30
Learning MYSQL can be a little daunting for beginners because its open-source and you have to do some research in getting the right information sometimes. This book is aimed at the beginner who wants to get their feet wet with MYSQL and also how to use it with many of the more popular development platforms such as Java, Perl and PHP.
It is easy to read through because of its column-based format with enough snapshots and visual guides to prevent you from getting eye strain. º
It first focuses on getting up and running on MySQL with the installation process on Windows or Mac or Linux (and UNIX). The book gives you all the links to install all the components of the database plus additional tools that will streamline you development process. There is also good information on how to upgrade your version of MySQL
The next chapter explains how to get you up and running in MySQL in the three different OS¡¦s with specifics on: Using mysqladmin, setting root password, using mysql client, setting up user privledges (creating new users) and starting and stopping services. A kinda detailed brief overview of how to be a MySQL admin.
Chapter 3 focuses on database design which usually can be kinda boring talking about normalization, importance of keys, table relationships, etc but the book only gives you the information you need with nice visuals to reinforce what is tauaght.
Chapter 4 goes over the MySQL and SQL commands in creating a database and table(s) with emphasis on field data types. Chapter 5 is a very useful chapter on basic SQL commands, since what is a database without the user knowing SQL, right? The author very succinctly reviews the SELECT statement for retrieving data, the UPDATE statement for updating records, DELETE and INSERT (you can guess what those two do). The book also goes into detail about table JOINS and filtering data with the WHERE, LIKE and GROUP BYclauses. A great resource chapter for the times you forget your basic syntax (which most people do from time to time).
Chapter 6 through 9 reviews how each of the more popular server-side web languages (PHP, Perl, and Java) use MyQL is used to retrieve, populate and update via web pages. The book provides code examples of the MySQL functions are specific to each language. Starting from how to connect to the database; how to execute commands; how to retrieve and display data (looping through records); how to incorporate error handling and how to secure your data. Depending on your preference, you will at least one of these chapters very helpful.
The next chapter focuses on new features in MySQL version 5 (stored procedures, triggers and views). These are somewhat advanced topics to a point but are covered wonderfully that even the newbie can understand.
The book finishes up with database administration issues such as performing and scheduling backups, logging, importing/exporting and repairing corruption issues.
A great introduction to MySQL that really can be your all-in-one reference as well.
A good starting point for beginners to mysql.......2005-10-24
The book is a bit out of date since it's assuming mysql version 3 is current and currently mysql v5 is what is currently released, but it has good instructions on installing mysql on multiple platforms as well as managing on multiple platforms
Review of MySQL: Visual QuickStart Guide.......2005-08-12
Well organized with a practical approach. Buyers without previouis acquaintance with PHP programming language will have some difficulty. Otherwise the text is a great 'introduction'.
Very good.......2005-07-07
This contains some good information, but there are better books out there.
I give it a 7.2937 out of 10 using my advanced book review calculation system.

Fighting in the millet fields of India circa 1803, Richard Sharpe knows trouble when he sees it: dissension in the ranks, a feverish and arrogant enemy, nobody to confide in. Unbeknownst to his comrades, Sharpe has buried a fortune in booty along the way. He knows his freedom is coming, and it's only a matter of time before he can feast on the spoils. Sharpe's Fortress is the 17th in Bernard Cornwell's series starring this colonial British soldier who has risen in the ranks despite blunders and misadventures, not to mention his own suspicions of the men around him.
Treason, near-death experiences, cannonballs hidden in the tall grass "sticky with blood and thick with flies, lying twenty paces from the man it had eviscerated," these are the elements of Cornwell's war stories, which rely heavily on long, involved--and involving--battle scenes, marvelous description, and bawdy dialogue in the trenches (a highlight: arguments over whether there's such a thing as breasts that look like grapes). For readers who hunger for humorous, complex characterizations, Sharpe proves vivid and three-dimensional. He holds tightly to his dreams of treasure, eavesdropping on betrayers, ultimately hatching a desperate plan to make his way to the fortress in the sky, Gawilghur. Cornwell's hero is an honest soldier, and also a pragmatic one. He doesn't care as much about the medals and the glory as he cares about dodging cannon fire and finding a place to sleep. --Ellen Williams
Book Description
Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe's Fortress -- the stunning successor to Sharpe's Tiger and Sharpe's Triumph -- marks the explosive finale in Richard Sharpe's trio of unforgettable adventures in India.
Richard Sharpe, now an officer in Wellesley's army, faces a battle of a different kind-this time among his own ranks. Uncomfortable with his newfound authority and unwilling colleagues, Sharpe is relegated to the tedium of baggage duty. But when he catches wind of a treasonous scheme devised by none other than his oldest and worst enemy, Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill, Sharpe has little choice but to take up arms, seek revenge, and regain his stolen treasure-the jewels of the Tippoo Sultan. Joining Wellesley's army as it prepares to lay siege to this fortress high above the Deccan Plain, Sharpe will risk his honor, reputation, and fortune on a battle that will test him as never before.
Customer Reviews:
Another great Sharpe book. Altogether enjoyable........2007-10-04
Another great book in the Sharpe series. In this one, our hero is now Lt. Richard Sharpe and hating it. Having received a battlefield commission from the future Duke of Wellington after saving his life at the Battle of Assaye, Sharpe languishes amid gentlemen who resent his commoner presence and enlisted men who resent his elevation above them.
With his commander pressuring him to sell his commission and leave the Army - a tempting offer to one of Sharpe's impoverished background - he is transferred to a backwater supplies unit. It proves a den of corruption and Sharpe soon finds himself a fugitive.
That doesn't stop him from joining the assault on the daunting fortress of Gawilghur, a mountain fastness never conquered and the key to British power's northward thrust in India. Even positioning artillery to shell it is a daunting task. Defending it now is the forbidding and formidable Colonel Dodd, the mercenary commander we met in "Sharpe's Triumph", who schemes how to use Gawilghur's defense to depose his Indian masters, and rule himself.
Helping Sharpe along the way are cavalry Sergeant Eli Lockhart; the brave Arab servant boy Ahmed; and Sharpe's old pal, the engineer Major Stokes. Altogether enjoyable.
Sharpe - Siege of Gawilghur.......2007-03-18
Bernard Cornwell is the absolute best military fiction author there is. This installment of Sharpe's adventures is excellent (as expected).
Sharpe's the One!.......2007-02-11
This is the third book in Bernard Cornwell's India trilogy and it is a spellbinder. There are 22 Sharpe stories and I just finished number 17. This series is right up there with Patrick O'Brians Aubrey/Maturan series and when you start a book you can't put it down until you've finished the history recap at it end. Sharpe is a private in India in the infantry and the East India Company is trying to keep their trade going against the warlords and Princes who are standing in their way. There are tigers and elephants and battles and looting and rape, murder and thievery. Cornwell covers a battle with such insight and depth that you swear you are right there. Great! You can't put it down and when you're through you're looking for the next adventure. Join the throng...Sharpe is the one!
Sharpe's Fortress: Richard Sharpe and the Siege of Gawilghur, Decmeber 1803.......2006-08-19
This is the third book of the series, and I can't seem to read them fast enough. I'm leaving the office early this Friday to go home and read.
A Great Series.......2006-08-15
This is another entry on the Sharpe series. It is fun, entertaining and very readable. Cornwell's research is as excellent as usual. He takes some licenses for the shake of the story and continuity, but this is OK. Some people are outraged by the portrait of some of the real historical characters, but historical characters are rarely depicted accurately in historical fiction, so I think this can be forgiven. Besides, usually a more serious account of these characters is given at the end of the book on the Historical Note.
Many people insist in compare this series with Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander. I don't think this is fair for any of the series, they are different entities. What they have in common is that once you start you may get hooked and devour one book after another...
And in the literary world today that is a rare and marvelous thing.

Book Description
From a Western perspective, the Persian Gulf War of 1990-1991 largely fulfilled the first President Bush's objective: "In, out, do it, do it right, get gone. That's the message." But in the Arab world, the causes and consequences of Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait and his subsequent defeat by a U.S.-led coalition were never so clear-cut. The potent blend of Islam and Arab nationalism that Saddam forged to justify the unjustifiablehis invasion of a Muslim stategained remarkable support among both Muslims and Arabs and continued to resonate in the Middle East long after the fighting ended. Indeed, as this study argues in passing, it became a significant strand in the tangled web of ideologies and actions that led to the attacks of 9/11.
This landmark book offers the first in-depth investigation of how Saddam Hussein used Islam and Arab nationalism to legitimate his invasion of Kuwait in the eyes of fellow Muslims and Arabs, while delegitimating the actions of the U.S.-led coalition and its Arab members. Jerry M. Long addresses three fundamental issues: how extensively and in what specific ways Iraq appealed to Islam during the Kuwait crisis; how elites, Islamists, and the elusive Arab "street," both in and out of the coalition, responded to that appeal and why they responded as they did; and the longer-term effects that resulted from Saddam's strategy.

Bringing together contributors working on a common problem but addressing different levels of brain organization by way of different techniques, The Mind-Brain Continuum seeks to determine which scientific questions are most pressing as we move toward discovering the neurobiology of psychological processes. As the title implies, contributions are organized around the notion that mental activity is brain activity, providing a broad, integrated view of a particular subset of brain function. The focus is on sensory perception, processes that include somatosensory, auditory, and olfactory processes, as well research on vision.
