Book Description
Praise for the First Edition . . .
"A unique piece of work, a book for electronics engineering, in general, but well suited and excellently applicable also to biomedical engineering . . . I recommend it with no reservation, congratulating the authors for the job performed." -IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology
"Describes a broad range of sensors in practical use and some circuit designs; copious information about electronic components is supplied, a matter of great value to electronic engineers. A large number of applications are supplied for each type of sensor described . . . This volume is of considerable importance."-Robotica
In this new edition of their successful book, renowned authorities Ramon Pallàs-Areny and John Webster bring you up to speed on the latest advances in sensor technology, addressing both the explosive growth in the use of microsensors and improvements made in classical macrosensors. They continue to offer the only combined treatment for both sensors and the signal-conditioning circuits associated with them, following the discussion of a given sensor and its applications with signal-conditioning methods for this type of sensor. New and expanded coverage includes:
* New sections on sensor materials and microsensor technology
* Basic measurement methods and primary sensors for common physical quantities
* A wide range of new sensors, from magnetoresistive sensors and SQUIDs to biosensors
* The widely used velocity sensors, fiber-optic sensors, and chemical sensors
* Variable CMOS oscillators and other digital and intelligent sensors
* 68 worked-out examples and 103 end-of-chapter problems with annotated solutions

Not Good.......2006-03-15
I usually do not take time to write a review. However, if you are considering using this book to teach a sensors course, do not! THere are multiple mistakes within the text, including grammatical errors and incorrect equations. The questions at the end of the chapter are good, however the answers in the back of the book are incorrect at least 25% of the time. The organiztion of the book is good for me, but until the errors are corrected, do not use this edition.

A detailed look into the life Marilyn Manson, one of the music world's most colorful and controversial figures. Every generation needs an outlaw, and as a new millennium began, Marilyn Manson was America's Most Wanted. Like a computer game come to life, he's playing a role and inviting us to join his fantasy world. This is his story, in his own words. With color photos.
QUOTES INCLUDE:
`While Columbine was a terrible tragedy, it's not the first. It's kind of displeasing to hear people treat it like it is. It's displeasing for the President to decry violence in America while at the same time he's sending bombs overseas to kill other people.';
`I was paid for sex once. I received $100 in cash and prizes because the girl didn't exactly have the entire $100 but she did have a credit card so she bought me some shoes.';
`I would rather put out records that do well every year and do that for 10 or 20 years, than one or two that do really great and then disappear. The faster you burn, the quicker you're gone and I plan on sticking around.';
`There's been a lot of bland and happy-go-lucky music created over the past six or seven years. I didn't really support Bush, but I hope we get some good right-wing Manson hating people in office so I can piss them off.'

Book Description
This book addresses major sociological issues in sub-Saharan African education today. Its fourteen contributors present a thoroughly African world-view within a sociology of education theoretical framework, allowing the reader to see where that theory is relevant to the African context and where it is not. Several of the chapters bring a much-needed cultural nuance and critical theoretical perspective to the issues at hand. The sixteen chapters thus aim to be of interest internationally, to those who work in such fields as social and political foundations of comparative and international education, and development studies, including university professors, teacher educators, researchers, school teachers, tertiary education students, consultants and policy makers.
Book Description
If your fondest TV memories involve the POWs of Stalag 13 cleverly outwitting their captors, Schultz stammering "I know nothing!" and Hochstetter threatening to send everyone to the Russian front, then this is the book for you. This fun and informative book takes you behind the scenes of the classic 1960s sitcom to reveal: the story behind the creation, production, and eventual cancellation of the series the controversy surrounding the show's unlikely premise interviews with many of the show's stars and crew biographies of the stars and supporting actors a detailed guide to each of the 168 episodes a guide to collecting Hogan's memorabilia and more....Hogan's Heroes is more popular now than ever before, especially in Germany, where it has become a surprising cult hit. In this book, most of the show's stars and behind-the-scenes personnel share their memories and reflect on the series' enduring popularity.

Great Resource- About the only one out there!.......2006-08-20
It's a great resource for the series, just too bad that there's not much in the way of photos in it. There's just a token few but it's obviously meant more as an episode guide than anything else. After searching the internet, it's the only book on the series that I can find so it is what it is. The information is accurate and useful. There's a tid bid of info regarding Hogan collectibles but no more than a paragraph about it. If this would ever be revised, I'd recommend adding color photos, more behind the scenes and how they filmed it as well as photos and info about the backlot location where it was filmed (Stalag 13 was built on top of the set for Tara from Gone With the Wind right next to the Gomer Pyle USMC and Andy Griffith Show Mayberry sets!). One last suggestion- When they finally release all six seasons of Hogan's Heroes on DVD, this would be a great companion book to go with the set. Maybe that alone would offer the author/publisher to consider a revised edition as suggested.
Hogan's Hereos: Behind the Scenes at Stalag 13!.......2006-08-02
Yes, I enjoyed the book. It was an interesting look at a classic comedy television series.
great amount of information!.......2006-02-19
this book gives some very good info. about the t.v. show Hogan's Heroes. great interviews with some of the cast, and nice articles about these that have passed on. lists of each show; plots, actors, writers, directors. my only problem with this book was the description on episode 60 . it said peace sign when they meant Winston Churchill's v for victory sign, which would have got a German soldier shot. they do have some real history in the book as well.
Great book, would go well with DVD sets if they ever get put out.......2005-07-14
A wealth of information on all 6 seasons of Hogan's Heroes. You get a short description of each episode, broadcast dates (even the original times and competing TV shows),guest appearances, even some trivial bits- all worth reading.
Around half the book (first half) covers the stars themselves giving details about their lives and careers, even listing TV, Movie and other credits for them. This part also has stuff on the writers/producers and the development of the series. I found this to have a lot of fascinating stuff in it. Robert Hogan, Bob Crane's character,was created by Bernard Fein who took the name of a friend- actor Robert Hogan ( you may notice his name listed in a season one episode, the actor played a POW deciding to escape on his own, messing up Hogan's planned group escape). I was surprised to read how many of the cast were actually Jewish (they took some flak for it when the show came on too). I'd heard that the show is now popular in Germany, it's explained here that the translators have basically written their own scripts to go with the pictures- so to me it isn't really even the same program anymore. One of the few complaints I have about this book is age related, written in 1998 a few more of the cast members have died since it was written.
You won't get many nuts & bolts details of each episode but you will get a very nice guide to the series. It's well worth owning, especially if someone ever gets around to producing more DVD sets than just the present 1st season.
A surprisingly re-readable look inside the legendary sit-com!.......2005-07-08
Wanting to bone up on "Hogan's Heroes" after giving the entire first season a viewing (available at www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007KIFK0), I picked up a copy of this book from the local library and gave it a read-through. I wasn't expecting anything different from it than I was from every other TV-show-tribute tome I'd read. And sure enough, much like the others, "Hogan's Heroes: Behind the Scenes at Stalag 13" is formatted in a manner that is very similar to the others. You've got'cher obligatory foreword by a surviving cast mate (well, surviving at the time), in this instance Werner Klemperer, AKA Col. Klink. In the foreword he states his gratitude at playing a role that was and still is loved my millions of people worldwide. Then you've got the section that discusses the creation of the show, including the controversy over the premise, the setting, and the portrayal of the bad guys.
And we mustn't forget the cast bios, starting (of course) with Bob Crane, who had a career in radio and acting in an occasional episode of "The Donna Reed Show" before landing his most famous role. Also covered is his infamous "home movies", and brutal murder. Klemperer and John Banner (Sgt. Schultz) are the second and third bios on display respectively. I find it wonderfully ironic that the men who played TV's most lovable Nazi henchman fled Europe in the 30s to get away from the Third Reich. Also notable is Richard Dawson, who went on to even greater fame as one of America's foremost game show hosts. According to the book he's been a bit loath to talk about his years playing Newkirk on the show. Also covered are the semi-regulars and notable guest characters, such as Leon Askin (General Burkhalter), and Bernard Fox (Col. Crittendon), the latter of whom was also known as Howard Stern's favorite doctor on "Bewitched". No, NOT Dr. Vinnie Boombatz! That's Rodney Dangerfield's personal physician, silly! Well, not anymore...
And of course there's the episode guide section, which list every show ever made in broadcast order, as well as a brief synopsis of events. Included with a few of the synopses are notable behind-the-scenes moments, odd parallels to other episodes, real-life events that inspired certain scenes in each eppie, and other odd and often amusing trivia tidbits.
Then there are the chapters that make this book stand out a bit from other TV tomes. One chapter discusses the rivalries and tension between various principals on the show. There are also chapters paying tribute to the show's various producers, writers, and directors. Also discussed in a couple chapters is the show's ranking in the Nielsen ratings during its run, as well as the factors that eventually led to its cancellation (primarily the ol' constant-switching-of-time-slots ploy). These particular chapters, which I'd seldom seen in other sit-com-celebration books, made for a refreshing change of pace. Also pleasantly surprising was how candid the book was in its tribute to the show; it discussed the various "warts" as well as the good parts in a fashion I'd never really experienced before in... well, you know. These occasional moments of somewhat brutal honesty (along with the post-"Heroes" part of Bob Crane's bio-- what a freakin' horndog!) not only made the "Hogan's Heroes" book very readable, but re-readable as well! Which is something I've rarely experienced-- well, I think you get the picture...
Speaking of pictures: check out the shot of Werner Klemperer on page 83. The way they lit his forehead, the guy looks like Satan for goodness sakes! It really freaks me out...

"Arguably the best work to date in the history of geology."—David R. Oldroyd, Science
"After a superficial first glance, most readers of good will and broad knowledge might dismiss [this book] as being too much about too little. They would be making one of the biggest mistakes in their intellectual lives. . . . [It] could become one of our century's key documents in understanding science and its history."—Stephen Jay Gould, New York Review of Books
"Surely one of the most important studies in the history of science of recent years, and arguably the best work to date in the history of geology."—David R. Oldroyd, Science
Customer Reviews:
A landmark in historiography and philosophy of science.......1997-12-17
This book can be read and enjoyed on several distinct but inter-related levels: as a great scientific thriller of ideas, as a riveting and amazingly detailed description of practical science "as she is make", as a landmark contribution to our understanding of the scientific method and finally as an insightful study of the economical, social and scientific factors which shaped science in the 19th century. Rudwick unearthed and collated an unprecedented mass of written material relating to the controversy in 1830s regarding the identification and interpretations of geological formations in Devon, which had far-reaching effects on the developments of geology. Armed with this material, he adopts the highly effective (though for a while unfashionable) approach of writing a coherent narrative of the events, in so far as they can be reconstructed, while scrupulously adhering to the principle of not importing hindsight into the narrative. This treatment is very effective and makes an important historiographical study into a generally accessible (and highly readable) book. Having told the tale, Rudwick proceeds to draw from it more general implications for our understanding of the process of scientific discovery. His conclusions present a welcome challenge to both extreme interpretations of science: as a "mere" unravelling of facts, and as "mere" social construct. In three words: entertaining, informative, superb!

Book Description
The love of making things need not be confined to the physical world -- electronic form giving can also be a rewarding hands-on experience. In this investigation of the possibility of craft in the digital realm, Malcolm McCullough observes that the emergence of computation as a medium, rather than just a set of tools, suggests a growing correspondence between digital work and traditional craft.
Personal and conversational in tone, with examples and illustrations drawn from a variety of disciplines, Abstracting Craft shows that anyone who gives form with software, whether in architecture, painting, animating, modeling, simulating, or manufacturing, is practicing personal knowledge and producing visual artifacts that, although not material, are nevertheless products of the hands, eyes, and mind.
Chapter by chapter, McCullough builds a case for upholding humane traits and values during the formative stages of new practices in digital media. He covers the nature of hand-eye coordination; the working context of the image culture; aspects of tool usage and medium appreciation; uses and limitations of symbolic methods; issues in human-computer interaction; geometric constructions and abstract methods in design; the necessity of improvisation; and the personal worth of work.
For those new to computing, McCullough offers an inside view of what the technology is like, what the important technical issues are, and how creative computing fits within a larger intellectual history. Specialists in human-computer interaction will find an interesting case study of the anthropological and psychological issues that matter to designers. Artificial intelligence researchers will be reminded that much activity fails to fit articulable formalisms. Aesthetic theorists will find a curiously developed case of neostructuralism, and cultural critics will be asked to imagine a praxis in which technology no longer represents an authoritarian opposition. Finally, the unheralded legions of digital craftspersons will find a full-blown acknowledgment of their artistry and humanity.
Customer Reviews:
HCI meets craft.......2002-12-10
One fear of digitizing art concerns the loss of craft needed to produce objects in physical media. McCullough may not set this fear to rest, but he does present a persuasive case that craft as we know it remains present in new media. He is able to define tools, tool use and tool systems so as to convince one that the tools of program interfaces are as much tools as their physical kin. The distinction between a tool and a machine and how both are represented in a graphic program's interface is especially intriguing. This book would be of interest to the many sculptors who have adopted digital methods into their work, but it may be of most use for human-computer interaction professionals designing 3D interfaces.
Can real artists use technology?.......1999-07-01
A book which explores many issues around the role of the artist utilising new-media. This re-affirms the fact that in all art forms responsibility is upmost. Great read for artists considering using new technology, especially students.
Revising the identity of technology.......1999-06-30
A very thorough and easy read for beginners to start thinking what lies beyond the computing technology. This book may be similar with Gate's The Road Ahead, but does not intrigue much ecological vision into abstracting the craft.
