Customer Reviews:
Good for preachers.......2007-10-03
I have been using this book as a sermon resource for several years now and have used quite a few of the anecdotes throughout the book. I especially appreciate the in-depth index which guides me to the topics I need. It made me purchase Hodgin's other two compilations.
Not true to its title.......2004-03-07
I found this book very disappointing. Its title is 1001 more humorous Illustrations for Public Speaking.
I found a lot of the content is not suitable for public speaking unless you are a preacher. A lot is in preaching. But I doubt whether many preachers would want to use it.
I wanted to use it in my public speaking club. Much is not appropriate for that setting.
I found it bemusing that quite a bit of the book is not appropriate for a preacher to use either.
Although the book was only published in 1998, it had an old feel.
I would not recommend this for public speaking.

Customer Reviews:
Very Pretty Binding, Terrific Selection, But ..........2006-03-23
The publisher Hal Leonard calls this the "Deluxe Collector's Edition" and that's exactly what it is: It's very pretty, great-looking gift, looks great on the shelf. But the first hint that this might not be as ultimate as you'd like comes the moment you open it: it doesn't stay open nearly as well as you'd hope.
This collection's best feature is that there are more songs here than you will find anywhere else at the price. There are over 100-songs here, including rarities you won't find printed in other books. Still, it's something of a quantity-over-quality approach: "Someone Saved my Life Tonight", "Something About the Way You Look Tonight", and "Sacrifice" aren't in the right key. But if you want "Skyline Pigeon," you'll only find it here.
It's also important to note that These Are Not Transcriptions. Meaning that this is not what Elton John plays exactly (for that, look to the Elton John Keyboard Book). The melody-line is built-in to the right-hand, and it's somebody else's interpretation. This is terrific for folks who don't sing, don't want to sing, but still want to hear the melody. This is irritating for folks who want to sing along with the music without the melody echoed in the piano.
It is what it is. Decent interpretations, incredible selection, at the expense of something more detailed and accurate, for 3x the price of other books. I'd suggest getting it only if you must have every song of Elton's you can possibly get, as you can find his biggest hits at the same or better quality in a different collection for cheaper.
Elton JOhn collection.......2005-09-22
THis collection contains all his best songs! The arrangements are original and not dumbed down for the begining player.
I have done internet searches and not found a more complete collection any where near this price. It was just what I was searching for!
Truly the Ultimate Edition.......2004-10-29
If you only like Elton John's songs a little bit, this is the book to own. The book includes all of the songs you need. My biggest problem is to find all of the songs on CD. This is a complication to grow with.
From Russian With Love.......2003-09-03
Exuse me, I speak to English very little.
I am from Russia. I was Elton Live Concert in Moskow and I buying
this book. It's great book of great performer. 100 very beautiful
songs. Amazon like me and I will be glad if it mini review help to you. Thank you.

Book Description
This year celebrates the 35th anniversary of the creation of The Prisoner series. The Prisoner was an enigmatic, Avengers-era drama starring Patrick McGoohan. Nothing quite like it has been seen on television since, and its cult following has mushroomed. With interviews from many of the original cast and an astonishing amount of inside information, this is a complete handbook to one of televisions most compelling series.
Book Description
Pro Service-Oriented Smart Clients with .NET 2.0 demonstrates how Smart Clients satisfy multiple purposes. First you deploy a Smart Client application to a server and send your user base a URL. Then when a user clicks the link, the server downloads the application to the end user's machine and then runs it on the client, just like a desktop application.
This book satisfies growing demand for a professional resource on Smart Clients. This comprehensive book is unique because it touches all of the bases: agility, service orientation, testing intelligence, and even a definition of what the "smart" in Smart Client means.
Customer Reviews:
Mistitled .......2007-03-31
There is nothing "Pro" about this book. This is a very basic (and very expensive) overview of smart clients. Do not buy this unless you have sat and looked it over well in a book store. I felt ripped off after buying this book online. I would be careful of buying any other books by this author also.
Misleading title.......2006-04-18
I have read this book, I'd say that is a good book if you're trying to get an idea of what a Smart Client is, and a little bit of what SOA might be etc. After reading this book, you can go and talk to your peers about what is a Smart Client(those without a big inside in the Smart Clients area). Plus there are some good architectural advices on some chapters.
But if you want to have a deep technical understanding on some of the tough questions on SmartClients, I'd say this book is a little bit too "For Beginers" one.
Worth a $40 Gift Card.......2006-03-06
I have been reading this book along with the smart client guide I downloaded from Microsoft. This book is actually pretty good. The author doesn't try to confuse you with complicated examples that take away from the concepts. The book discusses some of the smart client implementations by Microsoft, which is good because it gives you several sources to understand exactly what smart clients are. I had no idea this stuff was available, which is why I bought the book. It was definitely worth the $40 gift card I spent. Just to be fair, some of the later chapters could have been better but I got my moneys worth.
Poor.......2006-02-15
This book is apparently "for .Net Developers, designers and architects who want to build next=generation solutions". It promised to "use a practical, example driven approach".
Well, it doesnt do any of the above. This book gives a rather poor introductory narrative of Smart Clients. I wouldnt recommend this book for a developer who wants to get a good idea on how to build Smart Clients.
Don't waste your money on this book!!! I regret I did........2006-01-16
I have nothing good to say about this book. The examples are downloaded from MS's website, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/smartclient/. They were written by MS for VS 2003. If you are interested in smart clients, just checkout the MS site. An entire chapter is spent on describing the difference between and thin and thick clients. No indepth coverage of the material.

The best place to begin the study of physics.......2004-07-18
Although I took a full year of physics in college, I learned most of my physics from the three books in the Understanding Physics series by Isaac Asimov. As proof, I offer the fact that I scored a respectable 8 on the physics section of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) that I took before starting the college physics class. My study of physics in preparation for the test began when I purchased and read the three books in the series. When I was in the physics class, I understood all of the ideas; the only part that presented any difficulty was applying calculus to the problems.
Asimov has a knack for writing about science in a way that allows for the rapid and complete learning of the concepts. This book covers the basics of light, magnetism and electricity and how they are intimately interrelated. . Unlike many other authors, Asimov does not hesitate to use equations in his explanations. I commend him for this, as you cannot learn physics without equations and the temptation to avoid them was no doubt strong. If you want to learn the fundamentals of physics, the three-volume Understanding Physics series by Asimov is the best place to start.
The first "Physics for Dummies" book:.......2000-06-12
Asimov presents these aspects of phyiscs in bite-size pieces that anyone can digest. He uses everyday examples and only one or two simple equations to add emphasis. He explains where the math comes from and uses small diagrams to add a visual context. Some of the things he talks about are slightly out of date, but the history of the science is still interesting and enlightening. In general, the book is a bit of a snoozer, even for the hard-core science geek, but definitely worth reading for anyone who wants to understand these aspects of physics better.
Customer Reviews:
From Newtonian to Modern Physics.......2006-01-09
Asimov patiently and cogently wends his way from Classical physical theory to Modern theory, without, it seems, breaking a sweat. This is, as Asimov points out, a book largely about the collapse of Newtonian physics. I particularly liked his chapters on light, color, magnetism and electrostatics. This book would be a great elementary physics text.
Customer Reviews:
A dilettante's delight!.......2007-06-30
These three volumes in one are an easy-reading, chatty introduction to the world of physics. Asimov's inclusion of the historical background along with the development of specific concepts contributes to its readability. Asimov also keeps scientific jargon and mathematical equations to a minimum. I can't speculate on the value of "Understanding Physics" to the serious student of physics, but for a dabbler who wants to know more about how things work, or to have a handy reference, it is ideal.
Fully Explains Fundamental Relationships.......2006-06-23
Once you learn how to read deeply (and maybe a few years after freshman physics), this is THE book to read. Asimov has a science-type Ph.D. from Columbia (the Ivy league one) and he is a wonderful story teller. Still, I tried to read this book in high school and it meant nearly nothing to me then. But I tried again in graduate school (after completing ABET ECE degree) and was rewarded. Each and every page gave me just what my mind and heart desired. It was a heavenly experience to have even a synthetic relationship/conversation with Asimov and his mid-20th century Columbia Univeristy physics department. By the way, I'm pretty sure L. Ron Hubard's cult and its followers ripped off MEST (Mass, Energy, Time, and Space) from this book.

Very good.......2004-04-03
Asimov actually explains and makes sense out of physics. I am Physics major, and Asimov explains about as well as anyone. This is way better and more accessible than that dumb Feinman lectures series. Asimov is a very gifted writer and thinker. Although I differ with him on alot of his conclusions about life and existence, pretty much anything he writes is good. A another Good Physics book is Einstein's "Evolution of Physics".
Product Description
While many of us understand complex theories of criticism or finance, we cannot explain why the lights go on when we flick a switch or how a radio works. In this reader-friendly, unabridged edition of three of his best-selling books, renowned science writer Isaac Asimov demystifies physics, teaching the fundamentals in a manner easily understood by lay people. Including the complete text of Motion, Sound and Heat, Light, Magnetism and Electricity, and The Electron, Proton and Neutron, this volume will guide you through the evolution of physics from its early Greek beginnings up to the modern theories of the creation of time, space and matter. Each volume relates the tale of the human quest through the ages for answers to the fundamental questions of how the universe works. Told in its historical context, this quest for knowledge is a story of high drama and uncommon valor, when men put their very lives on the line for the sake of scientific truth.

Larry Pynn, a reporter for the Vancouver Sun, has spent his life among the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest--and not just as a chronicler. When he was young, he writes in Last Stands, he labored on the "green chain" of a sawmill, a job in a lean economy that brought the possibility of earning enough for the motorcycles and cars of a teenager's dreams. Half a century later, Pynn harbors evident regret for his work, but his experience affords him an unusual depth of firsthand knowledge in exploring the controversies surrounding the temperate rain forest--a threatened ecosystem that has been much in the environmental news since the spotted owl first flushed into the public spotlight in the late 1980s. Although the forest is supposedly better protected now than in the past with updated logging regulations, it has still been trimmed to something like 13 percent of its former extent, and old-growth continues to fall at a terrific rate.
Having traveled the length of the rain forest from northern California to southern Alaska, Pynn turns in a report on this embattled ecosystem that rings with both hard data and anecdotes from loggers, Native Americans, forestry industry officials, and Canadian and U.S. government workers. Preserving the remaining forests and the wildlife they shelter will require much additional work, he reckons. And it will require overcoming the "obscenity of polarized debate" that turns the forest into an object of rhetoric rather than a living place. It is that real place, and not an abstraction, that Pynn celebrates in these pages. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
The remarkable Pacific temperate rainforest has become an endangered landscape, rarer than even the embattled tropical rainforest. In "Last Stands," award-winning environmental writer Larry Pynn plunges into coastal forests from California to Alaska to explore this unique ecosystem and the complex factors that threaten it. Whether standing with new-age loggers as they toil beneath the churning blades of a heli-logging operation, witnessing the wolverine's legendary ferocity, bouncing along in the back of a pickup with a couple of bear hunters, or embarking on a week-long solo hike through an uncharted wilderness, Pynn's approach to understanding North America's temperate rainforest--and the creatures and people connected to it--is as diverse and unconventional as the forest itself. The result is a fascinating book, one part impassioned travelogue and one part natural history.
Customer Reviews:
A must read.......2004-04-21
This book manages to be both easy to read and to reveal important and complex insights about the rainforests of North America. Pynn is a natural storyteller who weaves his experiences travelling and talking with everyone from loggers to scientists to create a compelling read. Highly recommended.
Which book did you read, Kelowna?.......2000-09-13
I wouldn't normally post a review of a book but I stumbled across the previous reader's opinion and could not let it rest unchallenged. Mr. (or Mrs.) Kelowna leaves readers with the impression that Pynn is a neophyte writer who went straight from Journalism 101 to attempting the arduous task of researching and authoring a book. Nothing could be further from the truth. Already the author of The Forgotten Trail: One Man's Adventure's on the Canadian Route to the Klondike, Pynn has spent almost three decades as a prominent and award-winning BC writer. His prose is crisp, concise, laced with humour and a genuine, down-to-earth human feel. And all while tackling a subject that, admittedly, would normally be as dry as a Prince George winter. Had Pynn authored the biology and chemistry texts of my high school years I might have chosen not to drop those courses. There are few people who can take a reader on a journey through often incomprehensible scientific data and make that reader feel welcome. While Pynn's environmentally left-of-centre leanings are perhaps evident when he affords himself the luxury of editorializing (and why not, it's his book!), he nevertheless provides evidence for and against both sides of an extremely important issue on the Pacific Coast...allowing the reader to make up his or her own mind. Overall, an excellent book for anyone looking to explore the current state of our temperate rainforests; it will make you laugh, perhaps make you weep, but ultimately enlighten you.
