Book Description
P The period between 1767 and 1873 shaped public finance in Britain (and, by extension, many other countries) as we know it today, with the major economists of the time providing influential contributions. Until now, no book has examined and compared the thought of these 'classical economists' from the perspective of public finance rather than that of pure theory. /P P This groundbreaking volume critically analyzes and compares the writings on government expenditure, taxation and public debt of thinkers such as Adam Smith, Jeremy Bentham, David Ricardo and Thomas Malthus. These key figures are united by their struggles with fiscal theory - an important feature in the formation and development of political economy. /P P An original and intriguing read, this book breathes fresh life into the history of economic thought. Dome's clear and exciting arguments will make for essential reading for historians of economic thought, economic historians and those with an interest in public finance. /P

Book Description
Based on a 1908-1909 series of lectures delivered by John Spargo (1876-1966), a leading socialist writer of the period.. Spargo admits that he disagrees with syndicalist views, but he does admit that syndicalism is better than capitalism. He presents the history of syndicalism, the rise of the IWW, what industrial unionsm really should be and, socialism (which Spargo wants to be the ultimate goal). Appendices include Preamble of the IWW, an editorial from "Social Justice" on sabotage, the Jena Resolution on the General Strike, August Bebel on the General Strike, Kautsky on violence, and the Attitude of the French Syndicalists on Violence.
Spargo, trained as a stonecutter, but became a lay Methodist minister, became identified with the socialists in England in early life, became a leader in the English labor movement; and served on the Executive Council of the Social Democratic Federation. He immigrated to America in 1901 and was thereafter a longtime member of the National Executive Committee of the American Socialist Party. He regarded Bolshevism as an "inverted form of Czarism.
He edited socialist periodical, The Comrade, became involved in child labor issues; helped promote laws on child and woman labor, and moved to Vermont in 1909. He remained active in socialist circles, but moved to the right over World War I, and with Samuel Gompers and George Creel, founded the American Alliance for Labor and Democracy, in favor of American involvement in the war. He gradually became outspoken advocate of free-market capitalism.
His major publications include The Bitter Cry of Children (1906) and Karl Marx: His Life and Work(1909).

cochino
que desagradable
best book you'll ever buy. All of my students love it and find it very instructive and hilarious, and thus mortivating to read more. It gets kids to read, and is surprisingly clean in language considering his broadcasts.
It is surprisingly chaste as well as humorous and avoids the worst excesses of his great television show of five or six years ago. I only wish they would DVD box set all of Eugenio's old show. That would be way better than Seinfeld, for instance or Family Guy. Genius of comedy. But why the other reviewer sees terrorists in this innocuous bit of light comedy and wordplay in the style of every great writer from Shakespeare to James Joyce, well, I guess if its in Spanish some people place it under serious suspicion!
No counting for taste!
Customer Reviews:
AS INCREDIBLY INTELLIGENTLY FUNNY AS FINNEGANS WAKE: PLEASE BOX SET HIS ENTIRE SERIES FROM SIX YEARS AGO.......2006-10-19
This collection of word play and punning and Wakian wonderful phonetic hairsplitting, as the paradoxical title indicates, is some of the most side splitting and INTELLIGENT humor since James Joyce write Ulysses laughing the night away to the long-suffering complaint of his less literate wife.
This book is worth learning Spanish for. It's not that hard. Really. But if you conquer this level of Spanish, understanding cliche's and their puns and implications, and hearing other words within their homophones, you have truly learned all there is to know of Spanish, and, please, explain some of this to me, too!
If the Derbez television series was not still in heavy rebroadcast now over univision in snippets, giving some hearty meat to the currently thin comedic gruel, perhaps someone would come to their senses and BOX SET the entire "DERBEZ en cuando" series on DVD and let us get it. Right now only one brief and hollowly represetnational DVD sampler is available.
DERBEZ is truly is the most intellectual, parodic, hilarious humor since Mr. Joyce's pen fell silent, and is far superior to the other ubiquitous popular box set series like Seinfeld and Family Guy. Meanwhile in America we uncompassionately believe humor nothing more than jackasses getting their gonads squeezed.
This book is a must read. Like Finnegans Wake, much of it is phonetic punning (Spanish unlike English is a truly phonetic language) and word play on cliches; so you may wish to read it out loud to get the true meaning (like the Wake). And do go out and bug your native Spanish, in particular Mexican, friends to explain (but not kill) the robust humor from cover to cover
This is worth opening our borders if not our minds for.

"We sell lies," write Tor Hyams and David Scharff. "Fierce.com is our excuse for spilling misinformation on the public's lap each week." Well, sort of. Actually, it's a Web site where they post weekly reviews of other people's Web sites, and Fierce.com: The Exclusive Book for Web Elitists contains a couple hundred of them culled from the first few years of the site's existence.
Be advised, however: this is just a collection of Web site reviews approximately the same way The Divine Comedy is just a bunch of notes from Dante's dream journal. Highly opinionated (verging on warped), these speed-typed, barely edited write-ups only occasionally provide a straight-line glimpse of the sites they purport to critique. More often the review is a pretext for a deranged rant about evil alien show dogs, an erotic reverie on getting turned on by Archie comics as a child, or some other peek into the oddly charming inner lives of cousins Scharff and Hyams.
Lamentably, the sheer quantity of reviews gathered here, combined with the authors' off-the-cuff, Web-native style, means the reviewers' efforts themselves often deserve their own most lukewarm rating: Not Quite. But Hyams' brother Matt's humorous interludes (trippy riffs on, say, obscure mail-order products or U.S. diplomatic efforts to get a look at Saddam Hussein's nether regions) are never less than laugh-out-loud hilarious. And overall, the reviewers hit their marks too, providing a sharply personal snapshot of the Web that earns them their own highest praise: this book is Fierce. --Julian Dibbell
Book Description
Equal parts Siskel and Ebert and Beavis and Butthead, Tor Hyams and David Scharff review more than 125 sites on the World Wide Web. Known for their brutal honesty, cutting opinions, and feverish Loony Tune-style writing, Fierce.com is the most entertaining of online reference tools. Fierce.com rates Web sites as Fierce (the highest of honors), Unfierce (the farthest from Fierce), Not Quite (close but no cigar), Erotic, Useful, and Ridiculous. Divided into 17 chapters, Fierce.com covers everything from government agencies to health and beauty, television to music, erotica to religion.

Laugh? Only if you're still breathing!.......2000-06-27
When the news got out here in Australia that Fierce.com had finally landed in the "real" world, I raced out and bought a copy of "The Exclusive Book for Web Elitists" faster than you can say "Happy Hour at Sizzlers". Being a Fierce fan for longer than I care to remember, these guys have made me laugh over and over. And continue to do so now offline as well as on.
Tor and David are two of the craziest, abrasive, outspoken and out-of-control guys (with no particular quality attributed exclusively to either one) it's ever been my pleasure to come in contact with. And Matt is just plain unhinged. But all are hilariously funny and do the best "baffling with bulls**t" routine I've ever come across.
Just buy the book - it'll make you laugh, it'll probably make you cry and it will certainly make you look at the Web as it should be viewed - with one eye on the screen and the other on just how crazy and unreal (in the true sense of the word) this virtual reality world called the "WWW" really is. In other words - cross-eyed. (Well, it's worked for them!)
Fabulous Book.......1999-08-20
An excellent resource for "The best of the best", websites on the Internet. I will be visiting all of these websites and utilizing this book for quite some time to come. It was this book that brought me to Badpuppy.com, which I find to be the biggest best Gay & Lesbian Portal on the Internet. At the very least I now have a home on Badpuppy where I'm with many others who go through the trials and tribulations and the lifestyle questions the Gay & Lesbian community have come to expect.
Thank you Fierce.com for bringing all of these fine sites to the surface. I will be purchasing your book for years to come.
We should all be so Fierce!.......1999-07-13
The Fierce-sters have been there, done that, and are eminently qualified to direct us to the ultimate best of the Web. Follow their advice without hesitation. You'll waste less time and find more quality in your Internet surfing. Not to mention enjoying their fascinating reviews.
the funniest book i've ever read, online or off. period........1999-07-02
These guys are incredible. They write about websites, but you hardly have to go on the web to enjoy this thing. It's really about the twisted lives and relationships the author's lead. That's what makes it funny.
A hilarious way to find great sites on the web.......1999-07-02
I actually got the book as a gift from my mother because she knows I use the internet. She saw the book in the store and decided to buy it for me. I was nonplussed at first when I saw it. I mean, after all, who wants a book about the web for a present. I put it in my bathroom and took a gander one fine day and I could not stop laughing. These guys are so funny. And there're these fake parody type articles in each chapter of the book that are really bizaare and didn't really know what to make of but they're pretty damn funny, too. Anyway, it might be a shameful thing to say, but I know about a lot more sites now so, really, they make surfing fun. Thanks, Fierce.

Has the basics but lacks some important points.......2004-04-21
I bought this book because I was designing a web site for the very first time. I had some background knowledge of other Adobe products but had never used GoLive.
The book does a good job of explaining the tools avaialble in the program but has little information about how to really use these tools to make your site look good. The pages he shows you how to make in the book are uninspiring at best. If you're looking to make a more visually appealing site that has a professional sort of quality, this book will not help you figure out how to do that. Also, as with most programs, you're not going to use a lot of the more advanced features so a good majority of the book, while useful as a reference perhaps, was not relevant for me.
I ended up having to go online and read independent tutorials or ask friends to get the information I needed to learn how to use the tools to make my site visually appealing.
Don't let the title fool U..........2003-05-25
This is a great book for anyone to get up to speed quickly on golive. Good beginners book and a great start for learning golive.
Very helpful........2002-12-08
Before I purchased Go Live 6 for Dummies, I was pretty comfortable doing my html the old fashioned way-- with PageMill. However, upgrading my Mac to OS X meant upgrading my software.
This book is another fine For Dummies product. It was straight-forward enough for me (being familiar with html and the parent-application that spawned Go Live) to just read it through. Now I just use it as a reference tool. I don't think I have ever even opened the manual that came with the application.

Journalist Mark Bowden delivers a strikingly detailed account of the 1993 nightmare operation in Mogadishu that left 18 American soldiers dead and many more wounded. This early foreign-policy disaster for the Clinton administration led to the resignation of Secretary of Defense Les Aspin and a total troop withdrawal from Somalia. Bowden does not spend much time considering the context; instead he provides a moment-by-moment chronicle of what happened in the air and on the ground. His gritty narrative tells of how Rangers and elite Delta Force troops embarked on a mission to capture a pair of high-ranking deputies to warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid only to find themselves surrounded in a hostile African city. Their high-tech MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters had been shot down and a number of other miscues left them trapped through the night. Bowden describes Mogadishu as a place of Mad Max-like anarchy--implying strongly that there was never any peace for the supposed peacekeepers to keep. He makes full use of the defense bureaucracy's extensive paper trail--which includes official reports, investigations, and even radio transcripts--to describe the combat with great accuracy, right down to the actual dialogue. He supplements this with hundreds of his own interviews, turning Black Hawk Down into a completely authentic nonfiction novel, a lively page-turner that will make readers feel like they're standing beside the embattled troops. This will quickly be realized as a modern military classic. --John J. Miller
Book Description
The acclaimed New York Times bestseller Black Hawk Down is "a shocking account of modern warfare . . . gripping and horrifying" (San Francisco Chronicle)
Destined to become a classic of war reporting, Black Hawk Down is Mark Bowden's brilliant account of the longest sustained firefight involving American troops since the Vietnam War. On October 3rd, 1993, about a hundred elite U.S. soldiers were dropped by helicopter into the teeming market in the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia. Their mission was to abduct two top lieutenants of a Somali warlord and return to base. It was supposed to take an hour. Instead they found themselves pinned down through a long and terrible night fighting against thousands of heavily armed Somalis. The following morning, eighteen Americans were dead and more than seventy had been badly injured.
Drawing on interviews from both sides, army records, audiotapes, and videos (some of the material is still classified), Bowden's minute-by-minute narrative is one of the most exciting accounts of modern combat ever written--a riveting story that captures the heroism, courage, and brutality of battle.
"Black Hawk Down ranks among the best books ever written about infantry combat. . . . A descendent of books like The Killer Angels and We Were Soldiers Once . . . and Young."-- Bob Shacochis, The New York Observer
"If Black Hawk Down were fiction we'd rank it up there with the best war novels: The Naked and the Dead by Norman Mailer, or The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien."-- Tom Walker, The Denver Post
"Stands in a league with Shelby Foote's stirring Civil War Diary, Shiloh."-- Jim Haner, The Baltimore Sun
"One of the most gripping and authoritative accounts of combat ever written."-- Kirk Spitzer, USA Today
"Amazing . . . One of the most intense, visceral reading experiences imaginable."-- The Philadelphia Inquirer
A New York Times bestseller for 14 weeks
Bowden's Black Hawk Down series, which appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer was awarded the Overseas Press Club's Hal Boyle Award for best foreign reporting
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and revealing.......2007-08-29
The beginning of this book kinda made me want to be a soldier but as it got into the actual horrors of war it seriously scared a strong sense of reality into me. Anyone who is thinking of joining the military should read this book first. Not that I'm trying to discourage people but just that they should take it seriously and not just think of it as an easy way to pay off school loans or something.
Anyway, the book is fantastic. Get it and read it.
One of the greatest combat books I have ever read.......2007-08-16
This book is great. It tells about the Battle of the Black Sea extremly well with several different perspectives. From stories of some of the Delta opperators to the Habr Gidr clan members fighting them, this book tells it very, very well. Only Flags of Our Fathers rivals Black Hawk Down. If you like combat books, I highly recommend this book.
Great Story Highly Recommended .......2007-07-13
Let me incorporate, by reference the many well earned accolades of the other reviews. This is an exceptional book and deserves the praise. However, there are some limitations.
The first is that two men watching the same person do nothing more than walk down the street may have perceptions of the event that would make it appear that they observed two different events, the second is that some of the intimate observations of those who fought there may have been reserved during interviews and the third is that Bowden may have received some politically correct guidance from above. Finally there is something enlightening in the unedited words of some of the experienced participants.
MSG Howe, a legend in the Special Forces community wrote an excellent book , Leadership and Training For the Fight. Deliberately misses the well edited polish as he uses presents personal combat experience to illustrate the key subjects he is discussing. Much of the action is on the ground as a participant in what became knows as Blackhawk Down. Howe discusses the critical differences in between the Rangers and Special Forces as they fought together. The second additional reference are the two books by Durant, In The Company of Heroes and Night Stalkers.
One of the messages of the other books on the subject which directly conflicts with the conclusions of Blackhawk Down is the impact of the removal of the AC-130's from the area had on the operation. The theater commander was denied the AC-130 gunships and American armor. Bowden repeats the Washington spin that the gunships would have been ineffective in the urban environment. However, Durant notes the huge psych impact when the gunships were returned to the fight a fee days later, while he was still held prisoner. It is further reported that the Secy of Defense came down to the SF camp once they were home to apologize for the removal of the gunships and soften the blow that there would be no formal after action report.
The performance of the gunships in several firefights in Afghanistan clearly demonstrated that they could work very closely with troops on the ground who were vastly outnumbered and fighting for survival within stone throwing distance. There also no doubt that the Little Birds and gunships could have been used together.
Durant and Howe provide the framework to understand the tactics and mission of those on the ground and in the air on those fateful days.
All three books leave the reader stunned at the quality, dedication and effectiveness of those who serve our country.
First Rate Military History -- move over Cornelius Ryan.......2007-07-12
This rates as one of the best military histories I have ever read.
Mark Bowden is scrupulously careful, balanced, and thorough. He presents a very complex incident with color, passion, and detail, cataloging the sounds, smells, and visuals of this frightful engagement.
He allows the participants among American and Somali soldiers and noncombatants to tell their own stories in their own words. Occasionally he steps back and presents historical/political background to let the reader see this "Battle of the Black Sea" in context.
The movie version (Ridley Scott directing) was exceptionally well done, fast-paced, fierce, gritty, and like the battle itself, ultimately very sad and leaving a sense of futility, given that the U.S. scampered out of Somalia shortly after the battle. Yet the movie was light and almost careless of many details compared with this book.
Move over, Cornelius Ryan.
Unbelievable.......2007-04-30
I'm so upset that I watched the movie first. In my opinion the book is 100x's better and I'm surprised to see how many story lines that they have changed. The details just make you shake your head in shock. In the movie they didn't really mention (I can't recall) Air Force Combat Controller's. Honestly if it wasn't for them there would have more casualties. It's an amazing modern war story that won't put you to sleep. I enjoyed the pictures at the end of the book. I like to put names and faces together.
A great read from beginning to end.

Americal Policy Shot Down.......2006-09-12
In 1993, George Bush hailed the collapse of Russian Communism as a "New World Order." The United States stood alone as the lone superpower on the road toward a Pax Americana where world democracy would finally prevail. We were only a few steps down this road when we tripped and bloodied ourselves over a small stone in our path -- the country of Somalia. When the the government of Somalia collapsed in 1993 and its people faced mass starvation, the United Nations tried to bring order to a society in a country ruled by feuding clans and tribal warlords. After 26 Packestani soldiers were ambushed, murdered, and their bodies brutally mutilated, the United States decided to eliminate one notorious warlord -- Mohammad Fara Adid -- by using the crack Delta force in a series of raids, supported by Blackhawk helicopters. The effort went bad when two helicopters went down, and we were unable to extract nearly 100 men, who were pinned down overnight in the wrecked slum of Modidishu. The result was 18 dead US Rangers, and the nation awaking to he sight of American bodies being abused and dragged through the streets of Mododishu on international TV. Many Americans would rather avoid hearing more about this painful episode, but in Bowden's hands, this is a riveting story of courage and fortitude. The relentless focus on combat details lets you relive those long hours as Americans were injured and died under withering fire under the growing crowds of Somalis, who often used their wives and children as human shields in their efforts to kill Americans. Who deserves the blame for Somalia? By the end of this book, you will realize that like the players in a Greek tragedy, the actors were all doomed from the beginning. It is our part to learn from their mistakes, and be wiser in the future.

Book Description
-- New York Times Book Review
A searing portrait of Palestinian life and identity that is at once an exploration of Edward Said's unclaimable past and a testimony to the lives of those living in exile.
Customer Reviews:
Visual Poetry.......2003-08-09
Initially, I did not think that a book written in the mid-1980s would be a useful in the fast-changing topic of the Middle East. This was written before the Oslo peace process and before the first Palestinian Intifada, remember. I was therefore pleasantly surprised to find this gem in the library. Visual poetry is the best description I can think of - beautiful photos from the lens of the Swiss master Jean Mohr document Palestinian reality on every page. The photographic narrative is intertwined with a poetic elaboration by Edward Said (in my opinion the best I've seen of his writing). So much information is there, but also so much is left unsaid - for us readers to think about and visualize. Though some of the events in Middle East history may appear absurd, after reading this book it all starts to fit together and make sense. Even events taking place afterwards like the Intifada makes sense after understand the context the this book paints with such wonderful clarity. More books like this are desperately needed!
Insightful, informative but Briiliant.......2001-09-20
Once again Professor Said captures ones imagination as he takes you thru and insightful journey uncovering the hidden truth about the Palestinian tragedy. As I read one review by one reader, I can't stop but wonder why there is so much hatred against this man by some group only to conclude that the truth does hurt. It's so disheartening; I hope people realize how wrong they are.
An insight of the lives of the Palestinians.......2001-06-02
This book is written and compiled beautifuly with the pictures. Edward Said, was not writing a memoir as was suggested by the second reviwer. Said even mentions it. To try and put down the wonderful work of Edward Said by justifying him with this so called human rights lawyer-Justus Weiner is yet another way of demolising a great scholar.
Poetic essay.......2000-09-22
This book consists of a long personal essay about Palestinian identity which follows the author's thoughts as he reacts to a series of photographs (mostly from 1979) taken by Jean Mohr. It is not a memoir, although the author relates a few early memories of his parents' lives in Palestine and of the arrival of Palestinian refugees in Cairo, where he was living with his family 1948. Mostly, the book focuses on the injustice of a people whose homeland has been violently take away and what it means to be a nation in exile. The photographs are very poignant; it would have been nice to see them in greater detail, but most of them are rather small to accommodate the long text.
great reading, wonderful photography.......1998-12-29
This book is a must-see/read for anybody interested in a genuine solution to the pressing problems in Palestine. Edward Said's poignant descriptions of both Palestinian woes and the fight to retain identity force one either to reeavaluate his or her notions of the Palestinians (if one is inclined to take Western propaganda for granted), or to further support the Palestinian right to live with increased fervor and empathy. If the text is not given a chance, then the photos pose an even greater challenge: Should we finally all accept responsibility for the faltering, ludicrous "peace process" in the Middle East?

Customer Reviews:
try another book instead.......2003-04-02
I'm sorry to say I do not recommend this book. I expected examples with a heavy science and technical focus, but there are few. The examples show either little experience, or a focus on management. I was disappointed with how many of the example layouts break some basic rules of print layout. You'll find better examples by doing an Internet search.
I was especially interested in cover letters. There's about 1 1/2 pages of info - consisting of an explanation of the format of a letter (return address, date, salutation, etc.) and how to be sure not to smudge it, and to use the correct size envelope. The few examples are general, or apply to people with little experience.
A waste of paper...........2002-05-22
This book is a waste of the paper it was written on. Don't get me wrong, it has some good advice about writing a resume, but you can get that ANYWHERE. I was looking for some insight into writing a resume for a "Scientific and Technical Career" as the title would suggest. I just finished reading it, and besides the title, you wouldn't be able to tell it apart from any other book written about resumes. The only place it made an attempt was to include some "Scientific / Technical" resumes in the Sample Resumes section.
