Customer Reviews:
Hello to a Great Poet.......2004-05-24
Being a teacher and writer, I had heard Gwynn's name through the years and associated him more as an editor than as a poet. However, I read a review of this present book in an esteemed literary journal and decided it was time to check out the creative work of R.S. Gwynn.
He's a delight, a master, a brave soul in a world of timid poetasters. He has no fear in using traditional forms and regular rhytms to write his poems. And he is equally unafraid to skewer what Orwell called the "smelly little orthodoxies" which strangle both society in general and literature specifically. Read his "Narcissiad," the great center piece of NO WORD OF FAREWELL. It's a wonderful, dead-on swipe at the Lit Biz today, where poetry is a commodity and celebrity is preferable to excellence.
NO WORD OF FAREWELL is a generous compendium of Gwynn's work, dating back to 1970 and going up through 2000. The selections show that Gwynn is capable of most everything - satire, ballads, love poems, etc. He is a man of uncommon sense who nevertheless does not allow his level-headedness to obscure his heart. That his work is not better known is a commentary only on the present state of poetry and reading, not on R.S. Gwynn.
Nevertheless, I feel confident that when the rubbish of all the poet manques who currently crowd our magazines and college campuses is wiped away, Gwynn's work will finally emerge, a diamond in the rough finally revealed.
Please read this book and give copies to your friends. It is an inestimable source of pleasure and wisdom.
Giddy with Laughter and Wisdom.......2004-02-02
Full of wicked humor, slyly wrought pathos, boffo couplets, stunningly relevant sonnets, at least one startling take-stock epic, and giddy cynicism: there's simply no poet in America like Gwynn, and there's no one as funny, period. This is the REAL self-help book! Help yourself cope in this most angst-ridden of seasons: read Gwynn's wisdom and laughter.
Poet Laureate of Lamar University.......2003-09-26
Mr. Gwynn is my poetry teacher at Lamar Univerisity Beaumont, Tx.
He is a master of wit and intelligence (speaking of poetry now).
His insights and advice has helped my poetry emmensely, but surely not my spelling. If you are a poetry writer or fan from anywhere in the area, then you should definetly think about taking one of his poetry classes, for he is a legend in the making. His poetry and knowledge thereof is awesome and awe inspiring. Pick up his work whenever you find it.
Wry, Intelligent, Powerful........2002-09-26
Gwynn is smart and funny, but his poems move the reader's emotions as well as her intellect. More readers should be familiar with Gwynn's work.
Wit and Compassion.......2001-07-31
R.S. Gwynn is not nearly as well known as he should be; if there is any justice in the world, No Word of Farewell will change that. The poems in this book are written in an impressive array of forms, but their attitude is far from formal. Gwynn writes about pistol-packing old ladies ("At Rose's Range"), Samson and Delilah ("Among Philistines"), conjoined twins ("Chang and Eng"), and much more. Like all the best satirists, Gwynn joins wit with compassion for the characters who people his poems.
One of the many pleasures of No Word of Farewell is seeing Gwynn's humorous poems side by side with the more serious ones. My short list of favorite poems--both funny and serious--includes "Cleante to Elmire", "The Classroom at the Mall", "At Rose's Range", "Snow White and the Seven Deadly Sins", "Body Bags", and "The Garden Parasol". And that's not to mention the hilarious "The Professor's Lot" (which can be sung to the melody of a certain Gilbert & Sullivan song).
This is a wonderful book of poems, filled with warmth, wit, and variety. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2006-08-05
This is the 3rd CD from the Suzuki series we've purchased. Like
the 1st two CDs, it's good, clear and well played. The piano accompaniment is not overwhelming nor is it too soft. My daughter enjoys listening and playing her violin along with these CDs. It's a good idea to have this to play the new songs so your child can hear the pieces for Book 3 of the Suzuki pieces. She asks for it when we're in the car so that she can listen to it while I drive.

Customer Reviews:
"Oh, well, we're glad you think we're friendly"---Andy to the manicurist.......2006-01-27
This little quote book would be a nice stocking-stuffer or memento for a friend. It has photos of scenes from The Andy Griffith Show (some of them are color-tinted, which looks kind of tacky) along with quotes on friendship referencing the corresponding episode. If you have other books on TAGS, this one doesn't offer anything new or rare. I bought it because the title is a quote from one of my favorite, and terribly unappreciated, characters Warren Ferguson. Alas, there is only one photo of Warren, a common one from "The Legend of Barney Fife." Knowing that, I probably would not have purchased it. Still, it is a nice, inexpensive gift for the TAGS fan; but nothing more.
Photos include Opie with Johnny Paul and friends selling miracle salve; Ellie Walker giving pills to hypochondriac Emma Watson; Andy jamming with Jim Lindsey; Bob Rogers in "Barney's Replacement"; Mayor Pike, Floyd, Andy, and Barney looking at the new manicurist through the barbershop window; the manicurist; "The Jinx" Henry Bennett and Andy fishing; Andy and Barney being evaluated at the Esquire Club; "Merchant of Mayberry" Bert Miller with Andy; Barney making moulages and Mayor Stoner and company examining the plaster casts in "The Cow Thief"; Andy and Barney at a class reunion; Malcolm Merriweather dodging autos on his bicycle; Andy with Briscoe Darling; Barney with Mrs. Mendelbright; "Andy and Opie's Pal" holding a football; Otis riding a cow; Charles Foley and Floyd in "The Case of the Punch in the Nose"; Ernest T Bass befriending Malcolm Merriweather; Warren, Goober, Barney and Andy next to Barney's 1960 Edsel convertible; Goober guarding the door to "The Lodge"; Howard catching Old Sam; Aunt Bee and Clara; Helen and a bearded Goober; scenes from "Dinner at Eight"; "Howard's New Life"; Opie and Arnold at the ice cream counter.

Customer Reviews:
Must have for Professional VB/VBA Programmer.......2005-10-10
This was just what I needed to develop a special VBA program with Access. The Win32 API's let you get a little closer to the Window operating system than most standard languages.
A must have book.......2005-01-28
After buying many useless books on the VB API programming I bought this one after I read the reviews, and it is the ultimate reference ever.
If you are thinking of buying it, read the other reviews - they describe it more than I do - and go ahead and get it. It's worth every ounce of its weight in pure gold.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2002-11-20
This book is useless for any work or learning.
All samples are made with authors' functions which are in compiled dll written in C++ !?
Each chapter has at least 30% about porting from Win16 to Win32.
And book is filled with listings of forms and projects.
If you remove all this from book, the rest is less than 100 pages with confused explanations.
Do not buy this book. There are much better books around.
It's the Bible.......2002-04-24
For as long as there's been an API for VB developers, Dan has been THE source for reference on how to use it. He is the definitive authority. (How many people can earn that title about anything?)
Use this book FIRST. Then check with other sources of you need to.
dan appleman is the API god.......2002-04-03
it works well as a desktop reference but it also takes a little time to explain some of the more hardcore concepts. i recommend this book to ANYONE wanting to start and sucessfully finish an API project.
from this book it is apparent that mr Appleman believes VB can do ANYTHING by using a little API and, after owning it for a few months, you'll know it's true and you'll know how to make it happen too. a must-have for any self-respecting vb programmer

Customer Reviews:
Great reference book for Visual Basic programmers.......1999-07-29
I really enjoyed reading this book to get up to speed on Win32 programming before jumping into Visual C++. For any Visual Basic programmer who would like to get the most out of a program, the Win32 API is a must, and this book clearly shows how to call on the Win32 API for maximizing the potential of any Visual Basic project.
Weak in Enterprise / Networking API Usage.......1999-06-12
I was disappointed that enterprise APIs were completely ignored. Windows NT networking and WNET... APIs are not here. If your writing single user GUI type apps, this book is fine.
The most part, it's a great source for reference........1999-04-16
I use it as a dictionary. I tried reading the first 4 chapters, but found it to be full of stuff I'll never remember. I use it frequently as a reference guide, but there are times (rare times) where I've not been able to get the help I need. Definately not for the beginner.
Excellent refrence for Win32 APIs.......1999-03-27
Must have for VB programmers using Win32 APIs. I read the first 4 chapters completely after that it has served me as a refrences in my professional developement career.
Not at all recommended for novices.
Stuff.......1999-03-01
This book is about stuff. Appleman thoroughly teaches how to do stuff. This stuff is so stuffy, that it's just like all the other stuff on stuff-oids. You really should stuff this stuff.

Nos Ancetres Les Gaulois (Our Ancestors, the Gauls).......2003-07-22
The title for this review is what schoolchildren in Francophone Africa -- and elsewhere in France's far-flung emmpire -- would recite until recently, the product of what the author of this book has titled France's self-imposed mission civilisatrice or "mission to civilize."
Rosenblum, whose experience as a journalist covers most countries and territories currently or previously administered by France, approaches this book as both critic and admirer. After cataloguing a list of French foreign policy stances which have drawn widespread outcries (including the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, flagship of the Greenpeace movement), he writes: "But these characteristics of France, even the least admirable ones, reinforce amazing recuperative powers that allow the nation to spring back in full force from the deepest of defeats. France rests on the same old stones and slow-cooking sauces that have been survived war, occupation, and economic depression."
However, the relationship of France to its former colonies is not as simple as it might seem, as I have learned in over ten years of working in Francophone Africa. Mort Ronsenblum's book is one of the few in English and for the general reader, which attempts to describe this complex relationship. The actual extent of this empire in terms of people formerly under French administration does not come close to the former British empire. At the same time, the number of sovereign countries which today form part of "la Francophonie" is staggering, as is evident in this book, even if none of them comes close to the size of a Nigeria or India. Ronseblum notes that it is not the numbers, but rather the sense of outreach, that France seeks, quoting former President Mitterand, "We are the carriers of a culture that can have the ambition of being universal."
Rosenblum does a good job of trying to cover nearly all of France, its overseas departments and territories, and former colonies, without pretending to bring the depth and rigor of a historian. The first two parts of the book cover French history and institutions in order to provide a foundation for third part which covers la Francophonie on all continents - the Americas and Caribbean, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and Asia and the Pacific. His breezy style and chapters peppered with numerous quotes and anecdotes make for entertaining reading.
It would be interesting to speculate how this book would be rewritten in 2003. Developments since 1988 when the book came out,in France and its former colonies, have produced a new critique of France's relationships with its colonies. Sacred cows of the French establishment - including traditionally secretive abuse of public funds and influence peddling by senior politicians - have been dragged into court, all of which has also put a spotlight on the French relationship to Africa. - after other books in French such as "Francafrique" or by Africans "L'Afrique Sans La France" by a former Prime Minister of the Central African Republic. One wonders if Rosenblum would as tempted today,, as he was in 1988, to close his book with these last two sentences: "It is likely there will always be an England. It is certain there will always be a France."
Guidebook to French national character.......2003-05-18
Multiculturalism nowadays simultaneously cries up the virtues of individual cultures (except American culture) and forbids anyone to critically analyze the character of cultures (except American culture). It's a wonder that anything worthwhile about nations and their people ever gets written anymore.
So the existence of this overlooked gem is a boon to anyone unraveling the Gordian complexities of French national character. Rosenblum takes us through history and around the globe, from Gaul to the mid-Eighties, and from Paris to La France Profonde to her old colonies-turned-proteges to France's furthest island outposts.
With delightfully wry turns of phrase-English and French-he admires and skewers the genuine greatness and the overbearing pomposity of the French. (Of particular current interest are the doings of the then-Foreign Minister: Jacques Chirac.) He interviewed seemingly hundreds of people, relates many amusing and thought-provoking anecdotes, and generalizes aptly and fairly.
Here are a few excerpts:
"A string of crumbling French crusader forts rises from high ground across the Levant. They protect nothing and represent little power, but they are still there, after eight centuries. Like France. In North Africa, the French loom large, balanced precariously at center stage. But in the Middle East, they are nowhere and everywhere, moving within a hall of mirrors that only the architects of Versailles could have fashioned."
"The oldest [colonial] buildings show graceful, almost delicate facades; but gates are high, carved doors are solid as iron, stone walls are massive. They were designed to stay cool under the sun, remind civil servants of home, impress the locals, and withstand the odd volley of paving stones should things turn nasty. Not surprisingly, the cathedral and the university were built to last.
The British, in their outposts, leaned toward wood-frame
buildings and corrugated tin, as if they did not want the overhead to cut into profits. There were, in essence, camping out. Not the French."
