      Book Description

In many tropical countries mangrove forests are a crucial component of coastal resources. Nowhere is this more evident than in Thailand where their continued destruction due to shrimp farm expansion is impacting upon forestry, fisheries and the quality of the coastal environment.

In addition to the environmental damage caused, mangrove loss is also a serious social problem. Many people live and work among the mangrove forests and the destruction of the resources and ecological functions these forests provide affect the economic livelihoods and cultural heritage of many communities. Against these losses must be weighed the considerable commercial and foreign exchange benefits of shrimp aquaculture and production, which is a major export industry in Thailand. Through in-depth case studies of local communities in four distinct coastal areas in Southern Thailand, the authors are able to assess objectively the underlying economic causes, and consequences, of mangrove deforestation due to the expansion of shrimp farms.

Economists, ecologists, sociologists and coastal management specialists will all welcome this unique inter-disciplinary appraisal of the ecological, economic and social implications of shrimp farm expansion and mangrove conversion. It will also be of particular value to international and national policymakers concerned with coastal management in tropical countries.

4 out of 5 stars Funny book, but there's better stuff out there........2003-01-13

Very creative and funny book. It makes you wonder what this guy does all day. You will laugh out loud at the hilarious yet ridiculous scenarios presented by the author. If you like silly humor, buy this. The best material I have ever seen in this genre is on ... Check it out!
Again, a good book to read with friends, at parties, in groups, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Even tickles Granny's fanny (oops fancy).......2000-06-16

My grandson said "Would you rather 2" is not for Gomberg's rabbi or for grandmas. Eric you're wrong; I read it and wept. I laughed til I cried. These dilemnas are deranged and so are the authors.

Don't tell my grandson, but I just laughed through the first "Would you rather". Wickedly funny and witty, but number "2" is even more hilarious.

Boys, I can't wait for your next book.

3 out of 5 stars Not as amusing as the first "Would You Rather".......1999-12-29

While it's not as hysterically funny as the first book, it's still quite amusing. They didn't use ALL their good ideas in the first one; they did save some for this sequel. But if you're only going to buy one, make it the original.

This book and its predecessor are great party material. Leave the book out on the table and wait for the fun to begin.

        5 out of 5 stars Sensational.......1999-10-26

Now I'm not much or a fan of humor or "comedy." However, somebody slipped this book into my chambers and I couldn't help but read it. I must say, I couldn't put it down. I didn't cry, though.

5 out of 5 stars Anxiously awaiting Bautista.......1999-04-16

I hope that this upcoming work includes a further tribute to the great Duke cell biology student Phil Bautista. Not only did he have a lightning-quick, left-hand-dominant game on the basketball court, but he was remarkably adept with a quitar and with song lyrics featuring Sethi and Lin. I feel that Heimberg and Gomberg are up to the challenge of this sequel; Gomberg is like Maggette.

2 out of 5 stars Could be worse, but..........2007-05-05

        I'd avoid this book.

There are so many better books you can buy (with CDs), that there's no reason to buy this uninspired CD-less exercise book.
It is a Hanon so you can use it to develop endurance and mechanical technique, but it's drudgery. I recommend one of Hal Leonard's Styles series -- Blues or Rock and Roll Piano--or even better, Learn Boogie Woogie Piano by Davey and Poloney.

        My copy collects dust.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of fun for beginners too!.......2006-08-05

I had about 3 years of classical instruction which isn't much but I got bored with the exercises I was doing (Schaum's Alfred series - blecchh!) so I dropped piano for a while. Then I decided to have some fun with it and got this book. For the first time ever I really enjoy practicing and spend a lot of time with it. I was able to work through some of the stuff myself which was fun but it got frustrating. Figuring out the timings is hard for me and it really helps to have a teacher work with me on rhythms.

You also need to consider this book as compared to what... There aren't a whole lot of books out there on this so this is the best of the (pretty small) bunch. I personally enjoy the pieces tremendously and my kids like them too - my violin playing 9 year old comes over to play with me and we do a few left hand bass sequences which are simple but fun.

My teacher (who plays in a jazz/blues band) says they get pretty hard by the end so I think you can learn a lot.

It would really help if they had a CD with it because this stuff is mainly timings and rhythms which can be tricky for a beginner. Also, if it contained a few brief comments about the blues scale and the progressions it would be even better. As it is it is just exercises so beginners like me really need a teacher.

4 out of 5 stars Progressive Exercises Assuming no Prior Knowledge.......2006-01-28

I'm classically trained and have limited experience in the chord progressions and rhythms associated with the boogie; having said that, at the time of writing, I'm still about a third of the way through and am having the best left hand workout I've had in years. Even if you don't want seriously try and develop your boogie, you'll still find the book an invaluable source of 12 bar blues progressions and a brilliant set of exercises to develop your left hand technique.
The book contains 100 exercises of increasing difficulty which take you from the elementary rhythms into ever increasing levels of complexity - dotted rhythms, triplet action against left-hand dotted rhythms or semiquavers, that kind of thing. Even if you only do the first dozen or so exercises you'll find yourself becoming quite acquainted very quickly with the basic boogie style.
I can't wait to get a bit further through the book and then start augmenting it with a few recordings of real boogie pianists!

One note - in my opinion, while the exercises progress in difficulty, boogie as a style probably is more suited to pianists who are reasonably experienced, so if you're a beginner you might find the book too technically demanding to play really securely and accurately.

3 out of 5 stars Basic and boring.......2003-04-22

This is a book that WILL teach you the basics of the boogie woogie bass for piano.

It is not musically interesting. But, if you use this book AND some recordings of great jazz boogie-woogie players, you might figure out how to get that thumping, chugging sound. The examples in the Hanon, however, are pretty dull but serviceable for learning the method.

3 out of 5 stars a dry introduction to boogie woogie.......2001-05-29

Like the 'real' Hanon, this book is little more than a very inclusive array of exercises. I suppose that religious attention to doing them would improve one's skills, but it is a very 'dry' way to approach boogie woogie piano. One would be better served to obtain (or 'sound out') the music for some tunes and learn by actually playing the music itself. By its very nature, boogie woogie piano is built on repetition and patterns...the tunes themselves can serve as both technique-builders and repertiore.

          Book Description

For more than a century, Woolworth's five and dime stores represented Americana, mirroring the country's growth, its good times and bad, its foibles and its fads. The chain was founded by Frank W. Woolworth, who in 1879 established two stores—one in Utica, New York, which failed and was closed down, and another in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which succeeded and marked the beginning of the legacy of the Woolworth's Five and Tens.

This work is a full account of the chain, its rags-to-riches founder, Frank W. Woolworth, and his flamboyant and tragic descendants. It traces the important role that Woolworth stores played in the sit-down strikes of the 1930s, the lunch counter sit-ins that began in Greensboro, North Carolina, as part of the Civil Rights movement (which tainted Woolworth's as the Big Business enemy of the downtrodden), and the gradual disintegration of the five and tens during the 1980s and early 1990s. The dramatic story is enhanced with important photos featuring such events as the closing of a Woolworth's in Germany by Nazi soldiers and the Greensboro sit-in as well as archival photos from Woolworth's 40th, 50th, and 60th anniversary booklets.

Great coffee table book...which is why it was created!

Just like the previous versions, this book offers interesting images
of different design from shops around the country. Some of the work is
break-thru creative, some mainstream and other experimental.

The previous review from another reader which casts any negative
editorial comments is narrow-minded...art and design is subjective!

The editors chose some obscure design shops and the big ones...from
NYC, the Midwest, the Mid-east and the far-out. You will see images
from the nets, design houses, cable companies and even indies.

Although my company did not submit any creative work to this
publication, we will this year...I feel the book is fun to read, engages my
clients and impacts the senses, just as the editors intended...it makes
you think!...We look forward to 2003.

          3 out of 5 stars nice pictures.......2002-12-12

there are not too many motion graphics books out there. as a motion graphics designer (featured in this book) i think the work in it is a "good" quality. however, the layout and the readability of the book itself is lacking some flow. i have not yet seen a book that explains things, for novice individuals, but instead see lots of picture books. pictures are good, but a cd would have been better. if you are interested in motion graphics and want to see what is out there, this is a good book. if you are a critical designer as i am, it is ok. i just wish someone would "write" more about this specialized area. i may have to write the next motion graphics book myself.

5 out of 5 stars Motion Graphics have never looked better.......2002-10-22

I have to say that this book really shows off the best and worst motion graphics in year 2002. I was pleased to see that there are really beautiful images contrasted with pleanty of horidly bad designs. Dont be surprised to see that glass logos are rampent and the use of photoshop filters are dominant, as well as some amazing 3d rendering and excellent type designs. It is a great reference to those who want to know whats good and what to avoid when looking for inspiration.
I rate this a 5! An Excellent reference for you designers!

4 out of 5 stars It's actually not that bad, you just need some SQL & relat. DB info prior to.......2005-10-25

I read the reviews posted above, and was discouraged, but I needed an Oracle reference right away and this was the only book available at the library. Just as one person said, the first 2 chapters aren't wholly necessary and promote Oracle a lot. On the other hand, the book is printed by the Oracle Press. Chap. 3 provides details on Oracle's implementation of a DB, and Chap. 4 is where it *really* begins.

It is a lot at once for a true novice. I'm not so bad -- I had a pretty good crash course on relational DB ideas and SQL in 2 lectures of a web programming class once, for use with mySQL. This book is good enough to explain the Oracle side of things. And the writing isn't all that bad, i.e. it's more than just a copy of the manuals, IMO. It suits me well enough as an intro to the Oracle syntax and way of doing things.

2 out of 5 stars Overly vague...not quite intended for the absolute beginner.......2004-11-07

Being new to oracle databases this book basically highlighted the new features of oracle 9i while attempting to provide a beginners overview of the Oracle database.

The book also does not provide a download of the databases used in the code examples. As a true beginner, i would have liked to follow the code examples in the book, and try out SQL commands. This would have provided me a better understanding of what the author was explaining, as well as 'try out' the code examples.

However, if you are seekeing OCP certification and have a fundamental understanding of SQL and databases this book may assist you with converting to the Oracle structure. I've read the whole book without any Oracle or database experience, and was able to gain a better grasp of the architecture during OCP training courses.

As with all manuals i read there's always useful information contained within them, so i would not completely dismiss this book.

1 out of 5 stars VERY limited audience.......2004-09-12

Technical computer books are pricey enough that I normally browse a book pretty carefully before deciding to buy it. 'Oracle 9i: A Beginner's Guide', on the other hand, was an impulsive purchase that I regretted immediately. Time spent trying to get some use out of it has only hardened my opinion.

As an experienced Sybase DBA trying then to set up Oracle at home on Linux, I wanted three things primarily: Clear and complete installation and configuration instructions to supplement Oracle's disorganized and hit-or-miss instructions; Clear explanations of Oracle's architecture and unique features; and a good introduction to Oracle PL/SQL.

This book scored only one out of three. The two chapters on PL/SQL I found pretty useful. However, the material on architecture and features is confusing, largely because the writing is not well structured into main topics and subtopics. It also fails to provide good illustrations or to relate the architecture to concerns of installation and configuration. For instance, we are told about the function of redo logs, rollback segments, and undo tablespaces in vague and general terms, whereas a DBA needs to know precisely what they do. Rollback segments and undo tablespaces appear to serve basically the same purpose, according to my reading of the book. Should both be used, else what are the criteria for choosing one over the other? The text never gets there.

The installation instructions deserve a paragraph of their own. The index does not even list "installation", which probably is appropriate since the material covering installation was removed from this edition of the book, albeit incompletely. The 1 1/2 pages (!) beginning on page 84 bear the heading "So, You're the New Oracle 9i Database", perhaps the silliest of the book's many typographical errors. Then the first paragraph tantalizes "We are going to do a high-level, step-by-step walkthrough of putting up your first Oracle 9i database. Get yourself a cup of coffee and a comfortable chair; for those of you in business class, raise the footrestbeforehand...here we go:"...and then...the flight suddenly is over while the coffee is still warm. A note in italics advises the reader that "In earlier releases of the Beginner's Guide, we walked you through the Oracle server installation. With Oracle8i and now Oracle 9i, it's just too big a topic to cover in a book this size."

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I suggest that they should have just made the book bigger, and cut out all the gimpy, insulting attampts at humor, and the long-winded first chapter in praise of Oracle, Inc. Not every book from Oracle Press is this bad. I have browsed 'Oracle 9i DBA Handbook' by Kevin Loney and Marlene Theriault, and it is far better written, concise, organized, and informative (As always, take a look and make sure it covers the material you need). See also O'Reilly's 'Oracle 9i Essentials', or better yet the new edition for 10g.

          1 out of 5 stars Not for a beginner.......2004-08-31

I am truly a beginner in Oracle; I have experience as a computer programmer and with SQL Server 2000, but never really have played around with Oracle. So I was looking for a beginner's guide to get me started. Sadly, I picked this one because I thought since it's from Oracle, it would have the best resources at hand.

Almost immediately, I was disappointed: Chapter 1 is a tribute to how amazing Oracle is and how godlike Larry Ellison is and it's filled with pages and pages of revenues and sales. What a waste of paper. Then Chapter 2 tells me how to use newsgroups and Google: more wasted paper. I come to Chapter 3 and I think I finally get into learning something. Then I notice they concentrate on Sun Solaris as the operating system which isn't very helpful to a person trying to learn this on his own at home. What follows is a list of files and processes: very dry and certainly over the head of a beginner trying to start using Oracle. Then on page 84 I read, "In earlier releases of the Beginner's Guide, we walked you through the Oracle server installation. With Oracle 8i and now 9i, it's too big a topic to cover in a book this size." That's how they start out their step-by-step walkthrough of setting up your first Oracle database. Oh, the last step reads, "12. Read the rest of this book." To me, the book wasted 80 pages then tells me installation would take too long. Very disappointing.

At this point, the small jokes the authors throw in are just insulting as the book slips into unreadability.

Perhaps this book is good for someone sitting at an already-configured database terminal at their work running on Solaris. And I would also think you'd have to have some experience running some previous version of Oracle. This book is certainly NOT for beginners. I hope I didn't waste my money so that after I read a REAL beginner's guide, I can come back to this one and learn something.

5 out of 5 stars Nice coverage of database concepts and internals........2004-04-24

Wow, there is a lot of unfair bashing on this book.

This book covered exactly what its cover title said...

"...A Beginner's Guide. Learn the essentials of Oracle..."

Learn the essentials of Oracle was described very well. You get the feel of how the internals of Oracle go. If you are in a job interview and the interviewer asks some basics like the SGA, cursor or what is net8? You'll be laughed at for not having this simple yet broad database knowledge. Very few books describes the Oracle internals and general memory structure of all databases. It sure beats reading the white papers and manuals on the Oracle website. Anyway, this was the section that I thought was highly significant and it distingueshed itself from other books. I think some of the bad reviews below were not expecting what the book's title asys. "Learn the essentials of Oracle." If you want to buy a book on how-to write SQL and learn nothing else, then there are some SQL books targeted solely for only SQL writing.

Stokes, I.N. Phelps. The Iconography of Manhattan Island 1498-1909. New York: Robert H. Dodd, 1915. Six volumes. Reprinted 1998 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN 97-30604. ISBN 1-886363-30-7. Cloth. $750. Reprint edition of Stokes' magnificent and comprehensive illustrated history of Manhattan. This sweeping survey, originally published over the span 1915 to 1928, is divided into two parts, with volumes one and two comprising the first. These initial volumes present historical summaries, followed by exquisite plates and thorough plate descriptions. Part two repeats this pattern in volume three; presents a detailed chronology of historical events and personages in volumes four and five; and concludes with an addenda, bibliography, and index to the entire work in volume six. Interspersed throughout are the maps, documents, photographs, engravings, illustrations, etc. that Stokes and his assistants assembled from countless original sources. The quality and scope of visual representations truly befits its vast subject, Manhattan. Those concerned with the legal aspects of colonial and New York history will be particularly interested in the wealth of material from original sources to be found throughout these six volumes. The historical chronologies and detailed descriptions are enhanced by the facsimile plates which portray records and documents showing charters, ordinances and proclamations, etc.; handbills, broadsides, surveys, plans, portraits and numerous illustrations relating to the legal history of New York from the "period of discovery" through the Dutch and English settlements and the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, reconstruction, industrialization through to the year 1909: the establishment of the municipal government and the New York legislature; court houses and public buildings; abolitionist clubs, meetings and riots; prisons, criminal punishments and court appeals; bank, insurance and financial institutions; various commissions and associations; bills of exchange and credit; the British and Continental Army; the Continental and U.S. Congress; Indian treaties, international treaties; ferry and water rights; laws, duties and licenses relating to gambling, liquor, and the lottery; as well as taxes, patents, trade and shipping; an extensive section covering original land grants and farms with maps and text of grants citing names of land holders; religious rights such as the first legal case of anti-Semitism; numerous cases regarding slavery and negroes; cases about women, such as the case of a woman who was whipped by order of the court; immigration and alien registration, real estate holdings, crime; legal printers such as William Bradford, John Peter Zenger and James Parker; the establishment of law schools and universities; national political personages such as George Washington, Abigail and John Adams, James Buchanan, Benjamin Franklin, Ulysses S. Grant, James Madison, and Theodore Roosevelt; colonial governors such as Petrus Stuyvesant; legal personages such as James Kent; state and city officials and politicians, political parties, committees and elections. 5 out of 5 stars Original source material.......2005-01-14

The information contained in these six books is priceless, and absolutely essential for any serious researcher of New York City history. You can read the Amazon.com product description for a taste of what you can find inside. It also includes rare maps, and many other useful information.

What I found especially invaluable is the section entitled "Landmark Map" containing a history of new york city street names, and landmarks complete with citations on where to find the original source material if you wanted to dig further. I have no doubt most books published today regarding NYC street names has probably excerpted most of their information from "Iconography of Manhattan Island!"

If you are in NYC, you can peruse a copy of this book (Arno Press, reprint edition, 1967.) at the New York Public Library Jefferson Market branch. rkchin. check out http://www.tenementcity.com

Save your money. If you can find it, pay an extra $... and buy an original copy. The printing and everything else about the original blows away this reprint.

The information is priceless, but you can probably research what you need from a library.

For the serious New York buff only.

                Book Description

During the 1950s and 1960s increasing numbers of American citizens were stationed in foreign countries, and a whole generation of American children grew up abroad. As the interdependence of nations increases, new generations of "Absentee Americans" will be raised outside the United States. Based on interviews and questionnaire responses, this unique volume describes the impact of overseas living on Americans who spent at least some of their formative years in countries other than the United States. It touches on a wide range of subjects such as schooling, living arrangements, social life abroad, and the experience of reentry into the United States, and it also provides a comprehensive view of the distinctive opinions shared by these "global nomads." By exploring the lives and experiences of repatriates, the author emphasizes the need for increased intercultural contact and for educational programs that prepare young Americans to better understand the United States as part of the world community. This work will be of interest to sociologists and psychologists, as well as to Absentee Americans themselves, and to managers of public and private institutions with an international or intercultural dimension.

                  Book Description

Strong claims have been made for emergence as a new paradigm for understanding science, consciousness, and religion. Tracing the past history and current definitions of the concept, Clayton assesses the case for emergent phenomena in the natural world and their significance for philosophy and theology. Complex emergent phenomena require irreducible levels of explanation in physics, chemistry and biology. This pattern of emergence suggests a new approach to the problem of consciousness, which is neither reducible to brain states nor proof of a mental substance or soul. Although emergence does not entail classical theism, it is compatible with a variety of religious positions. Clayton concludes with a defence of emergentist panentheism and a Christian constructive theology consistent with the new sciences of emergence.

This book is fine if you are a philosopher and interested in the concept of emergence. But if you are looking for a readable book, this is not for you. Phillip Clayton can write in an understandable way, but in this book he uses a very hard to understand style.

The book indicates that the concept of emergence is not well defined and the reader is likely to feel as confused after reading it as they did before. I would only recommend this book for an academic with a background in philosophy who is pursuing emergence as a concept. For the rest of us, it can be used as a sleep aid.

                  Book Description

Much of the modern period was dominated by a `reductionist' theory of science. On this view, to explain any event in the world is to reduce it down to fundamental particles, laws, and forces. In recent years reductionism has been dramatically challenged by a radically new paradigm called `emergence'. According to this new theory, natural history reveals the continuous emergence of novel phenomena: new structures and new organisms with new causal powers. Consciousness is yet one more emergent level in the natural hierarchy. Many theologians and religious scholars believe that this new paradigm may offer new insights into the nature of God and God's relation to the world. This volume introduces readers to emergence theory, outlines the major arguments in its defence, and summarizes the most powerful objections against it. Written by experts but suitable as an introductory text, these essays provide the best available presentation of this exciting new field and its potentially momentous implications.

I am currently writing my thesis on ontology, strong emergence, and divine action (ie. How God acts on the world). I found this book very useful in covering the growing interest in emergence hypothesis(s), the book begins with an overview of the history of emergence hypothesises and carries on from there. Although the chapters on physics was a little difficult to grasp, this book is a must read for any philosopher of religion.

                          Book Description

How can we know what "our self" is, without knowing what "the self" is, and how can we understand what the self is, without understanding consciousness? To lay a foundation for a new approach to self-knowledge, Malabar tackles the job of demystifying consciousness and the self with a new framework and methodology that he invented for modeling emergence. The visual framework, which is rooted in complexity science, is used to synthesize information from fields as diverse as neuroscience, psychology, computer science, and linguistics, into simple models of the different forms of consciousness that emerge in four separate domains, and the methodology, to interpret and connect these models in a way that tells the story of their emergence.

In benchmarking the emergence of consciousness "now," in each of the four domains, the author renders an analysis of the effects of this modern age (e.g. technology, wealth, advertising, Hollywood) that shows clearly that the emergence of human consciousness is now in our hands, and that there is at this moment in our history, an urgent need to develop new tools, techniques, and programs for self-knowledge.

To conclude, Malabar introduces the overall research project of applying science and technology to self-knowledge for which this book lays the foundation.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating study of an issue difficult to analyze.......2002-04-11

The Emergence Of Consciousness: A New Framework For Self-Knowledge by scientist, author, and inventor Thane Malabar strives to fulfil the ancient Socratic wisdom conceptualized in the immortal words, "Know thyself." Drawing upon the study of a wide range of scientific disciplines from neuroscience and psychology to computer science, linguistics, and more, The Emergence Of Consciousness divides the essence of consciousness into four major domains: that of Species, Self, Attention, and Human Relationships. A fascinating study of an issue difficult to analyze directly yet fundamental to all human beings The Emergence Of Consciousness is very highly recommended reading for students of neuroscience, psychology, computer science, linguistics, as well as the non-specialist reader with an interest in the psychological processes of acquiring self-knowledge.
