Couldn't put it down.......2004-04-18

Full disclosure: I wrote one of the chapters (see the TOC below for detail -I can't figure out how to put my name in the "public nickname" slot at Amazon). But I don't get paid royalties as far as I know, and I don't mind if you skip my chapter when you get the book - I did! (Haven't had the courage to read it yet.) I mention all this to be upfront, and not use a pseudonym on Amazon - a common practice by authors, I've heard.

I'm writing because I read the book (the parts by everyone else) and feel too enthusiastic to keep quiet about it. I literally couldn't put the book down. When I received my copy, I stayed up way past my bedtime reading it, ignoring sleepiness and the fact that I had to go to work the next morning. If you are at all interested in the topic, I don't know of anything of its type that's richer or more engaging. Don't assume that it's another collection of academic papers; instead it has insights not only from scholars but also from conductors (e.g., Mackerras), orchestral players, record producers, and managers. To give you an idea and help you determine if this book would interest you, here's the table of contents, with my short notes on a few chapters - ande they all deserve comment, but I will leave that to others:

Part I. Practice:
1. The technique of conducting - Raymond Holden
2. Conductors in rehearsal - Charles Barber [conductor, archivist of conducting films, so this has details on historical greats like Furtwaengler]
3. Studio conducting - Michael Haas [producer of Solti and Abbado recordings- fascinating information about their recordings and why conducting in the studio, which is what most of us hear in our CD collections, is so different from conducting in concert]
4. The conductor and the soloist - Joseph Silverstein [he's outstanding both as a conductor and a soloist, and former concertmaster at Boston so he played with many greats; again, a lot of interesting stuff]
5. Choral conducting - Vance George [SF chorus master, great choral conductor, very useful]
6. Opera conducting - Sir Charles Mackerras [need I say more?]
7. The orchestra speaks - Robert L. Ripley [played in Cleveland and Boston SOs for many years. Great chapter! A lot of detail about famous conductors and what they did well or badly in working with orchestras.]

Part II. History: [as good a history as I've seen. It really clarifies the context out of which such apparently unique figures as, say, Toscanini arose.]

Everyday life back then.......2007-01-01

Like the author of this book the Forties fascinate me but there seems very few photobooks about the decade. Nick Freeth looks back on those years from a rather personal perspective so don't expect a comprehensive analyses, for that I would suggest Harold Evans American Century, The: People, Power and Politics - An Illustrated History with good images and text.

The decade is not easy to cover in a general sense because the Second World War mostly overshadows the post-war years. Freeth, probably rightly, devotes eight pages to the military and then gets into the domestic and social life in America. Some of the chapter heads might give you an idea of the contents: On Main Street, A Place of Our Own, At Work and School, It's the Weekend or That's Entertainment. All the chapters have a mix of text and photos though the book is really visual. Someone has done some excellent picture research because I thought the choice of photos and graphics was rather good but unfortunately, in many cases, an interesting image (a colorful ad from a consumer weekly for example) is really too small to benefit the reader. Most of the photos are black and white with color provided by printed graphic material.

The book's design is rather basic and in a way it looks a little like a forties publication (I wonder if this was deliberate?) and it does invite comparison with another book covering the same decade, Time-Life Books Decade of Triumph: The 40s (Our American Century). The choice of photos and production is fine but at least half the pages are war oriented.

Both books though reveal how interesting the decade was but I especially like Nick Freeth's book because of the unusual photo selection.

I saw Jack Benza on MSNBC and he intrigued me to read his book. He gave an accurate portrayal of what it is like to be a contestant on these shows. After checking his website out at Realityicon.com I understood what he meant by playing a character.

I'm going to admit it all up front. I love reality TV. At least some of it. I watch each and every episode of Survivor and The Amazing Race. I've tuned into portions of The Bachlorette, The Mole and Big Brother (I didn't like that one at all). So when the book, So You Wannabe On Reality TV by Jack Benza hit my desk, I picked it up and began reading it immediately.

Whew! This is the book to read if you want to be on TV. I've decided that it is definitely not for me because I'm just too high maintenance and I don't want all of my flaws to be aired on national television. I can't take the humiliation! And I enjoy anonymity far too much. Oh, and my mother really, really loves me and I'd like to keep it that way.

Benza has experience with "reality" TV and shares his experience of participating in over thirty reality, dating, and game shows. He's also produced audition tapes for other "wannabe contestants." He discusses the application traps, audition tapes, personal interviews, physical and mental tests and everything else connected to reality TV in a clear and straight-forward, no-holds-barred manner. And it's not always pretty.

If you want, really want, to break into reality TV, this just might be the book for you. It might also deter you from following that path, and even Benza would say, don't do it unless you're willing to play a part, be humiliated and suffer other "things" at the hands of the producers.

Armchair Interviews says: This book is not only helpful in navigating the reality TV path, but it is both a funny and scary look at this new phenomenon.

Come back To Reality.......2005-08-01

I thought Jack Benza's portrayal of the Reality World was concise. Never did I know, until now, what it took to be on a Reality show and how I could get on one. Jack broke it down from the audition to getting on TV. Now I'm going to do what it takes to get on Millionaire. Thanks Jack. People read this book!

WHY and BECAUSE this is a useless book, .......2005-02-28

In absolute agreement to Steamboat Willy.

This is the only book on InfoPath that has been translated into Italian. A non-programmer colleague has read this book from cover to cover to try and work with infopath. However, even though he has followed each example, the lack of any explaination as to WHY he was performing the various tasks given within the book, or what aim the author has in mind both of the task or explaining the task means that today he is none the wiser. The step-by-step approach to each task without explaining the outcomes, what to do when it doesn't go as you suggest, or giving the user any idea where the writer is going with an example makes problem-solving nigh on impossible, and the work seem useless.

Further, the examples are all based on ready-made forms, that quickly become too complex to deconstruct, even after reading this book, he is unable to project a form from the beginning, or to realise how to overcome diffculties in a project.

This book is not an instructive manual for a beginner on how to use Infopath, possibly useful as a "how do I..." reference for specific activities however, you will find the same things on Google that you have written in this book.

Personally, I would return the book asking for my money back.

Only How-To's and nothing about why something is done.......2005-01-25

This book was ok in some respects but the author went into the "NorthWind Trader" pieces too much and didnt explain how to get from point A-G only from point D-G which really frustrated me. Also the author rarely explains WHY you would ever use a feature or anything he talks about and just explains how to. Which is useless for someone like me who needs to have a WHY WHEN and HOW to understand the processes that are explained.

First book that describes the VERY important SP1 features!.......2004-08-29

I was delighted when I saw that this book was written by my favorite technical author, Roger Jennings. Maybe it's just me but I'm often disappointed by other tech authors. I'm sure they know their stuff but I find them devoting most of their writing to describing issues and details that, for some reason, don't relate to my problems in trying to leverage the subject's technology. Not so with Roger! He ably describes the details I need to quickly become successful. One key word describes his superiority - Relevance!

Save your money and DO NOT buy any InfoPath book that is not based upon the SP1 version! It's MUCH more than just a service pack, it's really like "InfoPath 2004" instead, adding a whole host of vitally important features including full Tablet PC support, integration with Visual Studio for developers, Email forms deployment, Security enhancements, and more. MAJOR stuff!

While this is the first book that covers the SP1 version, I bet it will remain among the very best even after all the other authors catch up!
