Book Description
Why did the United States lag behind Germany, Britain, and Sweden in adopting a national plan for the elderly? When the Social Security Act was finally enacted in 1935, why did it depend on a class-based double standard? Why is old age welfare in the United States still less comprehensive than its European counterparts? In this sophisticated analytical chronicle of one hundred years of American welfare history, Jill Quadagno explores the curious birth of old age assistance in the United States. Grounded in historical research and informed by social science theory, the study reveals how public assistance grew from colonial-era poor laws, locally financed and administered, into a massive federal bureaucracy.

Book Description
Market Structure and Competition Policy applies modern advances in game theory to the analysis of competition policy and develops some of the theoretical and policy concerns associated with the pioneering work of Louis Phlips. Containing contributions by leading scholars from Europe and North America, this book observes a common theme in the relationship between the regulatory regime and market structure. Since the inception of the new industrial organization, economists have developed a better understanding of how real world markets operate. These results have particular relevance to the design and application of anti-trust policy.

A welath of warm-up information.......2007-02-12
This booklet has many suggested warm-ups, suggested orders, and basically explains the warm-up processes and purposes, from physical to vocal to just before the first song. Some warm-ups are more serious; some are silly and just for fun! I like the way the warm-ups are arranged by suggested purpose. Suggestions in the back are made for various types of choirs, as well. The only thing I would have preferred to see more would be more suggestions for contemporary styles.

Customer Reviews:
Seriously, this book is a stinker.......2006-06-02
I own nearly every book on voiceover published in the last decade, and I can honestly say this is the worst of the lot. Poorly written and apparently published without having passed under the nose of a proofreader (much less an editor), it gives no actual advice or tips and instead is a sort of brag book about how good he was as a radio announcer and how work has fallen in his lap through the years. Actually, it's kind of funny to read line after line of text such as "So thn I got a call form this guy who said he loved my voice and I should be there voice. I didn't even autition. My voice is so awesome that weveryone who hears it loves it adn that's how I got to be the voice that everone hears when they turn there tv on." Okay, slight exaggeration, but not that much! Read it for a laugh, or just to fill out your voiceover library, but don't read it expecting to learn much. I'd highly recommend Harlan Hogan's book "VO: Tales and Techniques of a Voice-Over Actor" as the best first-person-narrative voiceover skills, tips, and reminiscences book on the market.
A Realistic View.......2000-03-13
Sandy Thomas' book, "So You Want To Be A Voiceover Star," is a lot of things...
What is is not is a quick fix. It is not a hand-holding, "insert slot-A into flap-B," guide for children. It is not, as one reviewer wrote, an infomercial full of promises. It is not a a look at the voiceover industry through rose-colored glasses, and it is not a guarantee.
For those who have had their hands held all their lives, who have never invested time, hard work, nor the risk of making a success of one's self, for those looking for a be-all and end-all, this book will fall short. Consider yourself warned. The book will not make you a star voice talent, nor will it make you a pig farmer. You will make of yourself what you will.
It is an accurate picture of what it takes to make it in professional voiceover. Period. If one is vastly disappointed in the lack of "real content," (read: Do it for me, Daddy), then one lacks the motivation, persistence, and thick skin required to make it in voiceover to begin with.
This book was clearly not written to be the ONE BOOK for begining voice talent. Only the lazy expect to read one book and become a success at anything.
For those who already have a base level of talent, who believe in themselves, who are motivated and persistent, who are looking for an accurate portrait of the business, Sandy Thomas' book is a must-read.
It is loosly narrative in nature..."This is how I did it." And it doesn't take itself too seriously. It is clear that Thomas' recognizes that life is about a bit more than career. True, there are a number of typos, but these are the fault of the editor, not the author. At least they had the courage an forsight to publish an important book for the business from one of the top talents in the industry. Perhaps they just need a better proofer.
I highly recommend this book.
a book worth reading.......2000-03-11
With few good books available on the subject, this book is a must. The author apparently has considerable practical experience in the day to day aspects of the industry. My knowledge of the subject was highly limited so I found this book to be a good jumping off point for my orientation into the little understood world of voice overs. Sandy did a good job in bringing to life the reality of the industry. He clearly warns of the unrealistic expectations a newcomer to the industry might have. Its a difficult industry in which only the very best make it to the top. At the same time he shares some of his secrets for interpreting copy, prepares you mentaly for this competitive industry and gives valueable industry resources. Thanks for the insight.
A good book to get you going.......2000-03-07
I recently read Sandy Thomas's new book and was quite thrilled with it. I was lucky enough to speak with the author before my purchase and his words to me was, don't be fooled or irrational to think that this book will make you a voice-over star. What he did say was that this book will share with you a pure insight into the field, give you a vision of what it's like to make to the top and test your personality to see if you have a strong enough one to make it in this very competitive industry. Along with that, it provided me with some credible industry trade references. It accomplished that. I was quiet disturbed by one reviewers comments on Amazon putting the author down. To think you could read one book on voice-overs and than WHAM I'm gonna be a voice-over star, quite naive. Basically if your looking for a perspective about this industry, from a credible highly successful consistently working Voice Talent and want info on getting started then this is a perfect book....if your expecting to be a voice talent after you read this...than this isn't a book to buy, in fact there is no book on the market that will achieve that. There's more to making it in Voice-Overs than reading a book.
No real content.......2000-01-28
I wanted this book to tell me something I could actually use. It is so lacking in any kind of real content. The chapter on building a studio says: "You will need one. They cost anywhere form $10,000 to $100,000". OK, but that's all it tells you! This whole book screams out to me the same way a 1980's TV infomercial does, where they tell you if you sit there through the commerical they're going to give you the precise secrets, step-by-step to buying real estate with no money down. Then you wait through the commercial and you're dissapointed that the steps they give you are: "You face your dreams and grab hold of the winds of opportunity and meet the challanges of tomorrow!" That's what this book is. It's full of pictures of the author saying "Look at me as a disc jockey. Here I am in an anonther important session." The section on how to interpret copy says: "Know your copy. You should be able to get it in several takes. You might mess of up some words cause you are human." But what about HOW to interpret the copy? Such lack of anything you can use from a book with such an ambitious title. Instead of giving specific, helpful techniques on how to interpret scripts or what exactly you'll need for your home studio, the author wastes page after page displaying photocopies of his big paychecks. This in a book of only 79 pages of "content" to begin with, and very large double spaced type. Sorry to be so honest here, but there are so many books already on the market on this subject with real content. Real how-to. I wanted to praise a book that gives insite on what the cover suggests "You can make up to $250,000 and up per year." Instead, this is a lot of "Grab the winds of change and face a handful of tomorrows and you'll be cool like me, and look at the photocopies of my big paychecks!" This is just an homage to the author's very large ego. I feel VERY ripped-off.

Book Description
Writing technical applications in a modern object-oriented approach, using Fortran 90 or 95, can be problematic. This book teaches how to employ the principles of object-oriented programming to produce clear, highly efficient executable codes (rather than focusing on the traditional procedural abilities of Fortran). This text is an excellent harbinger to all the features of the finalized, fully object-oriented Fortran 200X. In addition to covering the OOP methodologies, the basic foundation of the language and solid programming skills are reviewed, making the book valuable also as a good migration tool for experienced Fortran programmers that want to smoothly pick up the OOP paradigm. The author highlights common themes by using comparisons with Matlab® and C++ and uses numerous cross-referenced examples to convey all concepts quickly and clearly. Complete code for the examples is included on the accompanying CD.
Customer Reviews:
Limited Usefulness.......2004-01-03
This book requires that the reader already knows about object-oriented programming. It gives little information on the subject. Instead, it gives details about how to use Fortran to implement those concepts. The details it gives will already be familiar to Fortran users, though not for that purpose. I was hoping for a book for the many scientists and engineers who have learned and used Fortran well, but who have not learned about object-oriented methods. This book isn't it. The only audience for which it is useful is the opposite: an experienced object-oriented programmer who wishes to switch from another language to Fortran.
The above occupies about a third of the book. Another third consists of elementary material that is not particularly relevant even to that audience, such as memory management, linked lists, and linear algebra. Object orientation is mentioned only peripherally in that material.
The last third consists of appendices that are mostly padding. There are language tables that are available in the manual with any compiler, and source code which repeats with variations examples in the main text.
This Book Breathes New Life Into Fortran.......2003-02-22
This is a great book for any Fortran programmer (new and old). The author does a fantastic job of introducing OOP for Fortran 90/95. I had no idea that all kinds of neat OO concepts could be implemented in Fortran. I almost want to go back and rewrite my big FEA code using these concepts.
What I like most is that the author contrasts implementation details between Fortran, C++, and MATLAB to futher enrich the topics being discussed. Obviously, with this style, the author knows his audience (engineers and scientists).
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

easy to read book on the Shenandoah.......2006-07-07
This book proves to be a good introduction to the cruise and exploits of CSS Shenandoah, last Confederate military unit to give up the war. The book is easy to read and geared for introductory approach to the subject. I found the book to be pretty informative and interesting.
However, as one previous reviewer pointed out, this is not a scholarly work. The book tells a fine story but how much of it can we relied upon? A classical example is that story of the black man "volunteering" for the Confederacy. We have take the word of a southern white man on this but chances were, that black fellow was probably got drafted. His subsequence actions seem to reflect that he's not all that friendly toward his former shipmates.
While the book reads well, I have to say that the writing proves to be very pedestrian in nature. A good example of this is where he insist on regarding northerners as "yankees" while not regarding the Confederates as "rebels" which would be proper. The author views on slavery appears to be very contradictory as he cast the blame on the north for starting slavery and south for maintaining it.
Still, its a very readable book, a fine introduction to the voyage and expliots of the CSS Shenandoah although it would be hard press to used this book as a reference material due to lack of footnotes. But general information purpose for the general masses, this book will do just fine.
A wonderful book to read........2006-04-04
The Last Shot by Lynn Schooler is one of the most fascinating books that I have recently read. From page one to the end, it grabs your interest and moves swiftly through the many facets of this attempt by the Confederacy to wreck a part of the economy of the North. It is rich in detail without being pedantic. It brings to life the many men involved in this relatively little known part of the Civil War, their strengths and failings, their interactions with each other in the closed world of a ship at sea. This is well worth reading.
Enjoyable Reading.......2006-04-04
I am a Civil War buff and I have read many books on the subject. This book is well researched and very in depth. It not only chronicles the journey and actions of the ship, but also the personalities of the Captain, crew, captured prisoners, and other people involved along the way. The skullduggery, strokes of luck, and determination of the Captain to carry out the mission with a strange multi-national crew while being hunted by several Yankee warships make for a good plot. The book shows the reader what it was like on a ship during the mid-1800's : the problems, conditions, and rules of engagement. It gives the reader a sense of the politics of the times back then, especially when the ship is at port in Australia. An enjoyable book for those who want to see the maritime aspects of life on a Confederate ship during the Civil War.
The Last Shot.......2006-02-25
I bought this book for my husband who reads this kind of non-fiction for pleasure. He found it well written and fascinating; and, in fact, recommended it as a summer reading for high school students and also found it so appealing that he passed it on to his newphew who is a history buff and a college professor.
Would appeal to Civil War and 19th Century Maritime fans.........2006-02-18
With an ill-equiped crew and ship the South brought havoc and ruin to the Union's maritime fleet, in particular the whaling fleets. So if you are a Civil War buff, 19th Century maritime fan or intrigued with the history of whaling this is very worthwhile. The intriguing issue here is the fact that the Shennandoah was fighting long, long after the official end of the war.

Much of the time I spent on this book was reading and re-reading chapters I had difficulty understanding.

A remarkable collection of autobiographical accounts.......1999-04-29
This book does something new. It presents 11 autobiographical chapters by prominent female educational researchers, who write about the role of educational research in their lives, and the ways in which their lives have influenced the research that they do. The accounts are moving, and reveal much of the "backstage" of the academic life. And although each author's voice is distinctive, the editors treat the chapters as "data", looking across them to show how readers can learn from the accounts. This analytic edge, and the personal nature of the accounts, distinguishes this volume from other collections of academic autobiographies. It's a wonderful book.
POOR - no concept about the role of women in education.......1999-02-16
This book is a poor substitute if you want to get a real appreciation for the sense of women in education. It's a collection of writings poorly edited. The stories are choppy and unrelated, written in a way that uses academic prose in a most unproductive way. One can only assume that the editors know little about education and the book is but a collection piece for a resume.
