This book addresses the practices of consumption in tourism, a major theme in the sociology of tourism. To date, most tourism analysis has tended to concentrate on the production of tourist space, and assume that tourism consumption simply mirrors the intentions of the producers. By focussing on a number of relevant sub-themes, such as age, gender, religion and sexual orientation, the chapters within this book critically examine such assumptions in terms of the interplay between the production and consumption of tourist spaces, and how patterns of tourism consumption are negotiated on an individual level.

Farrokh Langdana makes an important contribution to the understanding of this complex area by presenting a consistent economic framework for analyzing the effects and implications of large bond-financed deficits. He uses an open-economy rational expectations model to explore to what extent governments can simply "roll-over" debt by issuing more bonds without any help from the monetary authority and examines the impact of foreign capital on the sustainability of domestic budget deficits, the behavior of exchange rates, and the possible effects of fiscal and monetary policies. This model is placed in the context of the major economic orthodoxies and their competing stances, and also of the American monetary history from Truman to Reagan and the crash of 1987.

Great music. Tremendous value.......2007-03-21

This is a 3 disk set, with a lot of great music to listen to (which I often do, even after owning it for about 5 years). These are not silly little drills, but production quality from world class artists. Most of their names were new to me, and after being so impressed I have ordered CD's from some of the individual artists: Al Petteway, Pierre BenSusan, to name a few. It is not easy stuff, and it takes a lot of work to master it. Highly worth the effort.

This is very good if you have the technique.......2007-03-21

This book is perfect for people who earn a full or part-time living playing instrumental guitar music. While not all the material here is useable (is any book thoroughly useful?), you will get finished and fingered arrangements by Muriel Anderson, Michael Chapledaine, Duck Baker, Marcel Dadi, Chris Proctor and Don Ross to name a few. Buster B. Jones is in there, so is Stephan Grossman. It's well worth it, because even with the many songs you won't want to practice or play, you wil be getting at the very least a handful of professional level solos that can be put into use. There is an arrangement of "Claire de Lune" that is absoultely stunning. Peter Finger makes a submission that is well worth the practice required, and Don Ross - well, even if you never learn to play like this you can study the arrangement and see how he does it.

That's the nice thing about the collection. In "Buster B. Boogie", for example, you'd have to be a very dedicated player to learn to play it - but even without the high level of technique required, there are miles of major-blues country and swing groove riffs in that one tune alone that can be fished out and used in jams or improvisations.

There are just so very many fingerstyle books aimed squarely at beginners and intermediates, it really is nice to see a more 'mainstream' publication with some upper-level material, and almost all of it fingered.

It's funny to see someone complain that 'alternate tunings should be used' when a little less than half of these are in alternate tunings! If being difficult to play is the sole criterion, then this book isn't very good. However, if new showpieces by modern performers is what you're after, without being scaled down, simplified, or made "E-Z", then this book is well worth it.

Come on already, isn't there enough 'made simple' out there in the world already? Do we really need MORE simplified music? Hey, if this was too hard to play, why would it come with two CD's of the composers playing their compositions fluently? If they can do it, why not make it an aspiration, or a practice goal, rather than a frustrated write off?

It's a regular paper binding, though, which can be a real hassle, since the book is so big. A book like this really needs spiral binding (see "fingerstyle Gig Book" by Bill Piburn). Get ready to photocopy some pages for your music stand.

Recommended, if you're serious.

For advanced players.......2007-03-11

The arrangements are definitely not easy. By using some alternate tunings or making modifications in the arrangements a lot of these songs would be much more playable. I would recommend this anthology for fairly players only.

In one point the author refers to Jack Lord's character of Hawaii 5-0 whose name was actually Steve McGarrett as Jimmy McGarrett! Also, the author writes of Barretta as if it was after Starsky and Hutch. But Barretta actaully debuted before Starsky and Hutch did--no?

This book was originally published in Germany. Kudos to Apress for picking it up and translating it. The translation is the reason many have called this book cryptic. But make no mistake, this is a fantastic book that covers many things that others do not. This is a great addition to any Excel library.

Doesn't Cover "good" VBA programming practices.......2005-10-05

I like to break programming into two different categories: scripting and application development.

These categories have little to do with the programming language, and more to do with the intent and style. "Scripts" generally aren't very robust: they have minimal error handling, they don't cleanly fail when unexpected data is encountered, etc. "Applications" are supposed to be more robust.

All of the VBA programs (and programming books) I've seen are mostly focused on getting the programmer from Point A to Point B without regard to any problems that may be created along the way.

This book goes into great detail about how to automate Excel, but it does not teach you how to make an Excel "Application," nor does it provide the necessary deep details about how VBA behaves for a programmer to be able to figure it out without turning to other references, and mostly experimentation.

In short, this book teaches you how to effectively create reams of unmaintainable spaghetti code.

If you only buy one VBA book..........2005-04-26

If you only plan to buy one book on Excel VBA (and trust me, one may be enough for most people!), then this is it. Mr. Kofler gives a comprehensive treatment of the subject matter that is structured in a logical and progressive manner. New, intermediate, and even advanced programmers are sure to find nuggets of valuable information in these 900+ pages.

Several chapters are directly related to database applications within Excel which is a strong plus for me. I haven't found another book that covers Excel databases so it was a welcome addition.

This is an excellent guide to Excel VBA. I have programmed in VB for 12+ years, but have barely dabbled in VBA. I needed to develop some tools for Excel using VBA. I asked expert friends on Experts-Exchange (www.experts-exchange.com) and Open IT (pub21.ezboard.com/bopenitforum) and they gave me three highly recommended books. I look on Amazon and came up with about five to consider, include those three previously recommended. I looked at copies of those and others and chose this book as the one most likely to fit my needs. So far, I am not disappointed.

Advanced Excel VBA Material.......2004-01-02

This is a great book for the intermediate to advanced Excel VBA user. It covers many fine details missed by other Excel VBA texts. This does NOT make this text better than others that focus on basic skills for VBA Application programming. Beginners may get lost in the depth of the details but experienced users will be very happy with the depth of knowledge that makes the difference between a good application and a great application. Buy this book after you master the fundamentals. Highly recommended.

The best on the subject.......2005-09-20

I am a Spanish researcher and I am very concerned on the development of oral communication skills. I teach a postgraduate course on the subject of Development of communication skills for scientists. I have read a dozen of books on the subject of oral communication in science and this short book is clearly the best written about this subject (at least for those readers whose first language is not English). I strongly recommend the lecture of this book. Practicing the exercises proposed in this book my students and I have greatly enhanced our oral presentation skills.

Science is a performing art.......2005-08-13

I don't mean your daily work at the bench. I mean those few times a year when you stand up and present your work to others in your field. If you can't present your ideas well, they won't be taken seriously, and this book offers lots of advice on presenting well.

The book covers all the basics of organization, preparation, delivery, and even disaster control - like when the airline sends you and your slides to different conferences. Although the details are useful, the whole book is really makes just one point: that a postive, sure attitude is the one absolute requirement for success. Focusing your message, creating the right presentation for the audience, good visual aids, and good personal appearance are all important, and covered at a reasonable level of detail. All of the preparation, however, supports the one goal of creating a bond of communication between you and your audience. The authors also talk about other aspects of verbal communication, including chairing other speakers, handling questions (including aggressive ones), and interviews.

You'll need other references for the details of good visual aids or other supporting materials. This is also a bit thin on the specifics of content organization and discussion of quantitative data. Still, this offers plenty of good suggestions on pulling it all together and getting across to your listeners.

If you're not a scientist, the first paragraph of the book may take you by surprise. It's full of words like "enthusiasm," "excitement," and "passion." No one who works in science should be surpised, though. This book is really about sharing your passion.

A horrendous book by my former professor...........2003-03-12

Upon reading and studying this guide, I wholly expected that it would provide me with knowledge and confidence in presentations. I was unfortunate enough to encounter Dr. Walters as a professor AFTER reading this title, and am appalled at his lecturing skills. One would think that he would take a few hints/pointers from his own text and apply them to his lecturing.
