Book Description
This book explains the significant variation that has emerged over time and across cases in international debt rescheduling during the past one hundred and seventy years. Based on a novel situational theory of bargaining, Professor Aggarwal's study provides a method to deduce actors' payoffs in different bargaining situations to develop "debt games," which are then used to predict negotiating outcomes. This integrated political-economic approach to analyze bargaining episodes goes beyond simple economic models or purely descriptive studies. In doing so, it contributes to international political and economic theory, game theory, and historical research on debt negotiations.

The life of rock band roadie would hardly inspire the likes of say, Emile Zola. But Steve Parish's 30+ year tenure with the Grateful Dead, the Jerry Garcia Band, and its survivors makes for compelling reading, even if his low-key, often self-deprecating reportorial style can't hope to begin to unravel the complex psychology that drove the symptomatic excesses---and all too many tragedies--of the 60's most enduringly emblematic American band. There's more here than sex, drugs, and rock and roll, even if Parish's writing struggles to encompass the meaning of it all. And make no mistake; The Dead and their coterie were, in the estimation of unlikely Deadhead Joseph Campbell, nothing short of potent modern mythology evolving before his very eyes. In the fallout of one memorable backstage incident, the author even found himself parodied by John Belushi in an SNL skit written by Deadheads Al Franken and Tom Davis. Parish casts little judgment on the oft-debauched actions of his cohorts here, though he often stops to note the brightness of their humanity. A paradoxical marriage of unrestrained hedonism and radical Christian social conscience, The Dead's world seems to still baffle Parish. His continued wonderment at it all is one of the book's charms; his tortured sense of helplessness in the addiction-fueled decline and death of Jerry Garcia, its spiritual and musical leader, its most tragic mystery. --Jerry McCulley
Book Description
The untold story of life on the road with the Grateful Dead, written by an insider who lived it from the early days to today.Steve Parish was never one to walk the straight-and-narrow, even during his childhood growing up in Flushing Meadow, Queens. Busted as a teenager for selling acid in the summer of 1968, Parish landed in Riker's Island. The experience changed him and after getting out he did his best to stay out of trouble, securing a job moving music equipment at the New York State Pavilion. The first show he worked was a Grateful Dead concert in July of 1969 and Parish was captivated by the music. A life seemingly headed nowhere had suddenly found its calling as he fell in quickly with a band of likeminded misfits who formed the nucleus of what would be the greatest road crew in rock 'n' roll history.Parish traveled to California where his apprenticeship began. Working for the band for free and learning his craft, Parish got to know Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Billy and Mickey and through the years their relationships forged an unbreakable bond. He became very close with Garcia in particular, acting as his personal roadie and later manager for his solo performances and Garcia Band shows. He was there during times of trouble (like when a pimp held Garcia hostage at gunpoint in a New York hotel room), spending hours by his bedside when Garcia was in a coma in 1986, and performing the duties of best man at his wedding. He was also the last friend to see Garcia alive. Throughout the Dead's historic run, there were parties of biblical proportion and celebrity run-ins with everybody from Bob Dylan to Frank Sinatra--but there was a dark side to life on the road and tragedy didn't just strike the musicians. But Home Before Daylight is a story of friendship, of music and redemption. It is a piece of music history, one that reflects the American spirit of adventure and brotherhood. Seen through Steve Parish's eyes and experiences, The Grateful Dead's wild ride has never been so revealing.
Customer Reviews:
Boring book.......2007-08-15
Did a lot of drugs.
Got laid a lot.
That's about all he has to say.
Good insider book.......2006-06-07
One of the better Dead books I've read. Parish (with assist from Layden) surely has a lot of stories to tell and he does it in an affable manner - even when his own behavior is less than stellar. Learned a lot about Jerry Garcia, but little about the rest of the band. Though that's understandable since Parish was by far closest to Garcia.
In reading this back to back with the books by Rock Scully, Dennis McNally, and the Garcia oral history "Dark Star," there is a bit of Grateful Dead "Rashomon." That is, all three books sometimes cover the same people/events, but all with a slightly different take. And the "hero" in one version can be the "villain" in another. Still, an indispensable tome for both hardcore and casual Deadheads.
Good book.......2005-12-22
The brutal reality about this book, just like all the others about the Grateful Dead, is that it reaches the same incredibly sad conclusion - Jerry was a addict, who in the end, could not un-do the damage that he had done to his body.
I liked this book - I've read all of 'em, and this one aligns quite closely with Rock's in style and substance. There are some real fun stories about the days on the road, and there are some heartbreaking stories about how addiction eventually over-shadowed the music that we all love so much. I applaud Steve for taking the time to get his thoughts and memories down on paper for those of us on *the outside*. I do wish he had spent a little more time (heck, any) on the gear and the sound. In Phil's book, he does an excellent job describing *how* he achieved some of his tones, and as I finished this book I couldn't help but wonder how much Steve really knew about Jerry's tones and style. I am left with the impression that Steve was just setting up the gear, and he had little or no knowledge about *how* Jerry played. This is fine, just an observation.
Bottom line - if you're a DeadHead, you'll probably like this book. You get to hear from someone *inside the ropes* what it was like to tour with these guys. It's a short, good read.
As an aside, I am hoping that one day Bob Weir takes the time to chronicle his life story. We've heard from Rock and Steve and Phil... I am really interested to hear Bobby's take on the whole trip... I think that book (if ever written) will explain more about how the songs were developed and crafted, and certainly, he should have more than enough road-stories to keep any fan satisfied.
Thanks Steve. Good job. Thanks for the hard work and all of the memories.
When the musics over; write a book.......2005-12-13
I don't know why people are so neg. about this book. But I think it is that the younger fans can't relate. For me it was very enlightening. The dead's vinyl explosion came on the scene at the beginning of the 70's which was like a supernova confirmation of the 60's and made it easier to get into the 70's . Pot was always a benign substance but because the dead's lyrics had alcohol it became less of a turn off. Today alcohol is just another escape but in the 60's there was a generational difference in alcohol and pot. In the book Parish mentions the 3 problem drugs heroin cocaine and alcohol. I didn't care for cocaine and heroin scared me but alcohol was a good weekend escape in the 70's but by the 80's I was hooked and for 15 years was a practicing alcoholic with a full time job. I stopped through the steps of AA and have to laugh when Parish says " 12 step spiritual mumbo jumbo" in the book. I do still have fond memories of getting high and when Jerry died I hated that Clinton had to say something about his drug use. But now I can understand why he said that even though what Jerry gave the world was far better than any president other than FDR. This book shows that Jerry was very much a friend of the working man.
Fun, fast, and interesting read..........2005-09-26
I picked this book up at the Barnes and Noble bargain book section for like 4 or 5 bucks.
It was a very pleasurable and fun read. The other reviewers are right; the book is about Steve Parish and his life and his experiences, he just happened to be a groupie and apparently an integral part of the GD scene. His life revolved around the Grateful Dead it seemed, so you got a fair bit of that.
People keep saying it was horribly written. I can read and write and maybe it wasn't technically fancy, but it did the job for me. Everything was easy to understand and there were no holes. It didn't jump around too much.
I thought this book really paints a picture of how important drugs were to the whole scene. It gave a decent feeling of what the 60s might be like. Whether that portrait is true or not, it is Steve's Portrait.
I'm not a deadhead a hippy or a stoner and I really enjoyed this book, you might too.
I generally don't read much fiction I mostly read nonfiction, and I thought this book read like a novel, except most of the stuff was probably true.
I was amazed at all the raunchy details that are in this book, it is probably not for kids.

If you're easily put off by purple pages festooned with hearts or photos of babies dressed like fairies, you might just miss out on this trove of practical advice on running a successful digital imaging business. All dolled up like a preteen's diary, The Glitterguru on Photoshop may look flimsy at first glance, but the information within will benefit anyone who shoots images for major ad campaigns (or aspires to) and uses Photoshop for simple touch-ups or complex compositing.
It's clear that author Troché-Stapp knows her stuff. In addition to commanding five-figure fees for her work as a digital imager, she is a contributing editor for PEI (Photo Electronic Imaging) magazine, and, in her role as an advice columnist, she is familiar with the real world problems people face. Her book discusses how to work with clients on a concept, prep for the photo shoot, create the image, and deliver the finished work in a professional manner and the proper format. The real nitty-gritty of being a professional photographer/digital imager is covered here, from interviewing models and creating a Web site for your business, to estimating your fee.
Retouching tips include performing digital "cosmetic surgery" (like slimming down a thigh and adding voluminous hair) and using Photoshop's adjustment layers, channels, and filters to achieve these affects. There's also lots of advice on seamlessly compositing backgrounds and props into images. The book ends with three case studies: a cover shoot for PEI; an image created to sell as stock; and a "portrait" of Troché-Stapp's husband as a computer-chip-brained borg. Except for the above-mentioned tips, this is not a Photoshop how-to manual. It's more of a supportive outline on how to earn a living from your Photoshop creations and it may be just be the pat on the behind your business needs. --Angelynn Grant
Book Description
Suzette Troche-Stapp, "the glitterguru", one of the most successful and sought-after photographers/digital artists today, has written the book she wishes had existed when she started working professionally. Here, she divulges her secrets culled from years of producing commercial digital art, from how to think about images, setting up images at photo shoots, retouching secrets, to composing an entire business package. She covers the entire process of image creation and development from start to finish (from concept to cool!). Reading this book is like shadowing Suzette throughout her career -- both from an art and business perspective. If you're on a professional path with Photoshop -- whether just starting or already on your way -- this book will inspire and educate you. The book is geared toward both photographers and digital artists and is chock-full of all the gems Suzette has learned along the way. Suzette's spunk combined with the eye-catching images and design make this book as fun and visually appealing as it is practical. Check out the sample material and you'll get the idea. glittergure on Photoshop: From Concept to Cool was the Winner of the Designer's Bookshelf award for Most Exciting New Photoshop Book
Customer Reviews:
Useless book unless you are (or want to be) a commercial photographer.......2006-04-04
If you are a portrait photographer (with no intention of moving into commercial photography) this book is a waste of money.
There is only one chapter that will be relevant to you and that is the Beauty Retouching chapter, which admittedly is quite a good read. The rest of the book is useless for portrait photographers, who will never have to deal with art directors etc. I suggest you get the sample 'Beauty Retouching' chapter off the internet and save yourself the cash!
I bought Katrin Eismann's 'Restoration and Retouching' the same time as this book and found it a good source of information on digital imaging for the portrait photographer, with chapters on Portrait and Glamour retouching.
A fairly lightweight glamor-retouching expose'.......2005-04-11
If you are looking for a definitive instruction book on portrait retouching, this is not the book. Readers will find the process of glamour retouching interesting: chopping inches off hips, transplating locks of hair, whitening teeth, etc. But there is not much hard information provided, only broad approaches. However, the book does provide a window into how the actual world of commercial glamour photography operates - including how art directors interface with photographers and retouchers. Troche-Stapp shows how she found a unique niche in a very competitive business. Worthwhile information for someone considering this venue as a career.
A bit misleading but that aside, its good!.......2005-01-16
The title is a bit misleading. When I got my hands on this book I thought I'd learn some cool techniques on retouching as well as how to add glitter and stuff in photoshop. Nope Sorry didn't learn how to add glitter in photoshop.
But what I did learn was this. The basic business of photography from the ground up, that's portfolios, talking to art directors all the way to delivery. That's great, but what if I've already read books on those topics and have experience in that? Well then you get a 100 pages of retouching tips... is it worth it? If you've never done retouching before, then yes. If you have, you might be reading the pages and thinking "hmm, theres a better way to do this". I don't say there can only be one way to do something, but I wanted to read a book on why I should retouch this way not how to do it. That let me down. However, I don't want to let that get in the way, just remember, this book teaches you a lot in just a bit more than 200 pages. It teaches you to be a commercial artist who knows how to deal with the business as well as get the job done. However, if you want something that takes you really really deep in these two topics, then this book isn't for you.
Recommended pick for newcomers to the program.......2004-08-08
Beginners to Photoshop daunted by the dry, thick appearance of most 'Bibles' on the topic will find themselves compelled by Suzette Troche-Stapp, the 'glitter guru' herself; if not by the cover, which shows a butterfly-painted pretty face rather than an imposing computer; than by the bright color-coded pages within, which invite browsing the learning. "Things that contain lots of glitter" are to be found here; from diagrams of real-life lighting setups and tips on marketing Photoshop results to make money, to fantasy re-touching studio models. The Glitterguru On Photoshop From Concept To Cool is simply compelling and a specially recommended pick for newcomers to the program.
The Glitter Guru is worth the read.......2004-02-14
The book "the Glitterguru on Photoshop-From Concept to Cool", has a misleading title. At first glance I thought that this book would go through having a image that was marked up for correction and then go through what it would entail to complete those corrections. But I was pleasantly wrong about this. It does include this, but it includes how to work at the table with the Ad agency/Client to discuss the best shot angles, substitute shots, shooting for specific area of a single shot to be possibly composed at a later time.... the list goes on. And then it goes where I have yet to see any book go for the digital artist. How to decide what to charge the customer, what this should entail, and how to keep within that budget. Very valuable advise for the artist first starting out, even a few tips for a veteran like myself. This is a good addition to anyones arsenal of tools to bring oneself to the forefront of imaging.

Book Description
History Book Club Selection.
Born in torment barely half a century ago, Pakistan appears to be in constant pursuit of its own identity; at the same time it has become a pivotal player in global politics. Its short existence has witnessed an extraordinary variety of events: four "coups d' état", the rise of Islam as a power, tensions between ethnic groups and religious groups, the Kashmir conflict and the near-constant war footing with India, the rapid establishment of separatist movements such as that which lead to the establishment of Bangladesh, and its own increasingly important position at the axis of the Middle East, central Asia and China. Furthermore, the ongoing issues surrounding Afghanistan and the most recent coup that leaves Pakistan, the sixth most populous country in the world, the only nuclear power governed by the military, make the study of this country's history one of the most crucial in terms of understanding modern international relations, politics, religion, economics and global military strategy.
This book, compiled by a renowned academic team under the editorship of Christophe Jaffrelot is written in a style that is suitable for both academic readers, as well as those who seek a more general intellectual understanding of the region.
Customer Reviews:
Most comprehensive and objective book on Pakistan out today.......2004-02-08
Every since September 11th, countless books about Pakistan have been published, each scrutizing its history as nothing but a state bent on growing the seeds of Islamic fundamentalism. This book is a welcome contrast, and hats off to Jaffrelot, a Frenchman, and his team for doing an extensive amount of research about the initial foundations of the country, all of the political tumult, the events leading to Bangladeshi secession and the tense relationship with India, the role as a proxy during the Cold War, the constitutional straying from Jinnah's secular vision, and an invaluable lesson in ethnography and religion, described in much more detail than the average book on the country (for example, not only does it describe Sunnism and Shi'ism as being the two main branches of Islam practiced in the country, it delves into subsets and sub-subsets of each branch, so that the reader gets a much better understanding of the incredible religious diversity within the Pakistani Muslim community itself). The main compliment I have about this book is that it remains extremely academic and objective. Never is it written in an alarmist way, and it doesn't favor one political movement over another. It refrains from sugarcoating any misdeeds of the government, the army, or the population, yet at the same time, it doesn't resort to demonizing the nation, either. It just states how things are over there now, and how things were in the past. It is a much more fascinating and educational read (for Pakistanis and non-Pakistanis alike) than other "Beware Pakistan!" types written by so-called Western "experts" on the region who try to make the reader believe that the entire country is one big madrassah intent to destroying the United States (far from it), or "Pakistan - The Glorious" types written by heavily biased Pakistani writers who believe that every single thing wrong within the country is due to a "foreign hand." If you would like to get a good base knowledge about the dynamics of this country caught within an extremely tumultuous global political game, put this book at the top of the list.

Santa Fe Institute mathematician John Casti calls The Cambridge Quintet "scientific fiction," a work whose goal "is to present a lively and comprehensible exposition of the intellectual and emotional uncertainties involved in shaping the future of human knowledge." Casti sets the way-back machine for 1949, and imagines that C.P. Snow (pundit, civil servant, and physicist) hosts a dinner party in his rooms at Cambridge University to discuss the possibility that a machine could be made to think. The guests: philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, mathematician and computer demigod Alan Turing, physicist Erwin Schrödinger, and geneticist J.B.S. Haldane. Not surprisingly, the party comes to no single conclusion, but Casti's format provides a comprehensible, entertaining introduction to an important question, and to the ideas and personalities of some of the 20th century's most influential (and eccentric) thinkers.

In this narrative tour de force, five of the greatest minds of the twentieth century argue whether machines will ever have the ability to think like humans-and whether they should be allowed to do so.

Fantastic !.......2007-03-21
This is a speculative science writing of the best quality. This discusses the issues of machine intelligence among five seminal thinkers as they talk to each other at a Cambridge university dinner party. A primer reading on machine intelligence.
The Quintet .......2006-12-05
This is a story of a meeting that took place, but actually could not. It is about 5 people who met for diner who talk about the topic of Artificial intelligence. Throughout this meeting, the 5 intellects argue over what would occur if machines really could think on their own. The book takes you into the beginning of the Computer Science era. It speaks of algorithms. Overall, the book is about the artificial intelligence and what is to come if it is to become a reality
The reading is alittle sluggish at times, but interesting to those who are fascinated with things ilke this.
Highly entertaining.......2005-07-25
I confess a weakness for this kind of format, a fictional situation in which historical figures meet around a table and argue their various points of view face-to face. This short book is an especially nice example of the genre, with the protagonists meeting around the dinner table in Cambridge on a stormy English night in 1949. It recalls a certain variety of detective story, and in a way that's what it is. But the essential mystery, what it means to be a thinking human being, is not finally solved.
Many of the key issues connected with language, thought, and the possibilities for machine intelligence are touched on in these conversations, giving the reader a good sense of the kinds of philosophical and technical questions that remain unresolved even today. The mode of presentation is probably about as entertaining a one as possible for an introduction to this kind of material. At a minimum, I think your reaction to the book will tell you whether you have enough interest in the subject matter to pursue it much further. But even if you don't, you will have encountered a great many stimulating ideas in these pages. And you will know enough not to have to sit there like a stupid lump should the subject of AI (Artificial Intelligence) come up in conversation. The book does not go as far as some reviewers would have liked, but I think it nicely does the introductory overview job it set out to do.
My only quibble is that while Chomsky's later ideas about language are presented (Casti admits the anachronism as a way to get certain ideas into the conversation), behavioral psychology is not given the benefit of a similar updating. Skinner's work on verbal behavior was quite sophisticated, much akin to the view here put forth by Wittgenstein, and far from the old Watsonian stimulus-response version of behaviorism used as a foil in the book. That was a difference, by the way, that Chomsky never managed to comprehend.
Riveting.......2004-05-01
In this book, John Casti, who in my opinion may well turn out to be one of the foremost science writers of all time, weaves a tale about an extraordinary meeting...that never took place, but could well have. Five outstanding intellectuals-C.P.Snow: Physicist, Erwin Schrodinger: Physicist, J B S Haldane: Biologist, Ludwig Wittgenstein: Philosopher and Alan Turing: Mathematician-meet for dinner at Cambridge University's Christ College in Snow's rooms, at his request, for profound discussion about a topic that could change the future of humanity forever. The topic: Artificial Intelligence. Can machines think? During the intense discussion that follows, we get to read about a tour de force presented by Casti, just like it would be, had such a meeting actually taken place. As these great minds argue back and forth about this central question, we are transformed to post war England, and the beginnings of modern day computer science. Almost everything they talk about had, or will have far reaching consequences. Some of the idea Turing talks about, such as algorithms, are so commonplace in the modern world, that we take them absolutely for granted. Other related questions, such as the origin and structure of language and its relation to computational processes, are still profound unsolved questions. Casti makes everything sound extremely realistic, and does a great job at it. His choice of characters for this debate is superb, and one which cannot easily be imagined, but which in hindsight is perfect. His portraying of their personalities is impeccable, and represents the diverse backgrounds which each of them brings to the dinner table. His language is brilliant, and so is the humour.
What about the conclusion? There can be none for such a complex problem. But the knowledge which one gains in such enterprises is priceless. Forget about Bill Gates, George Bush, and Saddam Hussein (although they DO make a difference!). Gentlemen such as these are the real movers and shakers of the world, although few may hear of them ,for they toil as little known geniuses. We should be indebted to writers like John Casti, for telling us their story. Thank you, John!
could be summarized in a chapter........2001-08-28
This venture into the murky waters of historical speculation and machine-consciousness debates does tell you a few things if you are unfamiliar with Turing and Wittgenstein (otherwise, don't bother reading it). But while Turing's viewpoint is clearly stated from the start, Wittgenstein's is only done justice at the end. The other three characters in the book could be merged into a single one without any loss, and in general the entire book's message could be condensed in a few pages. Which would be pages worth reading if you like articles in easy-reading popular science magazines (which I have nothing against, and indeed subscribe to).

Book Description
The present essay is addressed simultaneously to two distinct audiences. The first audience consists of my professional colleagues, other academics, students, and lay readers, who are less than intimately familiar with the philosophical position commonly called scientific realism. For them I have here attempted to make available in fairly short compass a coherent and comprehensive account of that position as it bears on the philosophy of perception, on the theory of meaning, on the philosophy of mind, and on systematic epistemology.

Book Description
Since the scientific revolutions of the seventeenth century, a great number of distinguished scientists and mathematicians have been associated with Cambridge University. Cambridge Scientific Minds is a unique account of some of the University's most eminent thinkers over the last 400 years, including Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and James Clerk Maxwell. While the rapid establishment during the Newtonian era of a series of professorships for mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, anatomy, botany, geology, and geometry marked the University's scientific coming of age, this volume's chronological balance reflects on the increasing importance of science in the institution's recent history. Chapters on Paul Dirac, Alan Turing, Joseph Needham, and Stephen Hawking, among others, represent the recent intellectual efflorescence at Cambridge. Personal memoirs and historical essays, written by leading historians, scientists, and Nobel Laureates, make Cambridge Scientific Minds as enjoyable to read as it is accessible. Peter Harman is Professor of the History of Science at Lancaster University. He has published primarily on the history of physics and natural philosophy in the 18th and 19th centuries, the period from Newton to Maxwell. His previous books include Energy, Force and Matter (Cambridge, 1982), The Investigation of Difficult Things (Cambridge, 1992), After Newton: Essays on Natural Philosophy (Variorum, 1993), The Scientific Letters and Papers of James Clerk Maxwell, volume 1 (Cambridge, 1990), volume 2 (Cambridge, 1995). Simon Mitton studied physics at the University of Oxford, and received a PhD in radio astronomy at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge. He is Senior Fellow at St. Edmund's College, Cambridge. This is his tenth book.

Book Description
Constructing Scientific Psychology is the first full-scale interpretation of the life and work of the major American neuropsychologist Karl Lashley. It sets Lashley's research at the heart of two controversies that polarized the American life and human sciences in the first half of the twentieth century. These concerned the relationship between "mind" and "brain" and the relative roles of "nature" and "nurture" in shaping behavior and intelligence. The book explodes the myth of Lashley's neuropsychology as a fact-driven, "pure" science by arguing that a belief in the power of heredity and a nativist and deeply conservative racial ideology informed every aspect of his theory and practice.

Brain Research and Reactionary Ideology.......2001-07-04
Once upon a time people thought that science was a value-free enterprise, and that scientists operated in relative isolation of the social and political battles that were going on around them. Today, very few people think that way anymore. In particular in the life sciences, the associations between political beliefs and scientific research have been demonstrated time and again (who, for example, does not know about the multiple links between immigration restriction, eugenics, and the IQ tests?). In this book, the far-right ideological ideals of Karl Lashley, one of America's most eminent brain researchers, are analyzed. The first part of the book details his experimental work, while the second part details his political views. Detailed analyses of neurophysiological theories and experimental practices are provided and their influence on American human science sketched. It appears that Lashley successfully hid behind the epithet of conducting pure science in order to push a rather conservative and, at times, racist agenda.
