Book Description
In "Labor, Solidarity and the Common Good," edited by S.A. Cortright, five scholars bring analyses of the subjective dimension of human work to bear on issues at the root of managerial practice. Because the authors view work as a human and humanizing activity, the essays variously demonstrate how reflection on the human ends of work points to forms of solidarity that empower enterprises to promote the good of their members and the wider community. A general introduction, "Human Work: Hinge of the Social Question," traces the essays' roots in Catholic social thought and situates them in relation to contemporary social ethics. Each essay is complemented by a response that assesses weaknesses in the argument and points to further research and reflection.
James B. Murphy (Government, Dartmouth College) examines "The Quest for a Balanced Appraisal of Work," looking both to the evolution of Catholic social teaching and to the requirements of a humane economy. James Gordley (Law, University of California, Berkeley) outlines a doctrine of contracts in "Labor and Commutative Justice," explaining present trends in the courts' decision-making and showing how the courts' ad hoc reasoning can be reduced to consistent jurisprudence. Thomas Cavanaugh (Social Ethics, University of San Francisco) essays a theory of property calculated to promote commu- nity in "Aquinas's Account of the Ineradicably Social Nature of Private Property." Michael Naughton (Management, University of St. Thomas) shows in practical detail how and why the ideal of the just wage is within the reach of contemporary strategic management in "Managers as Distributors of Justice." J. Michael Stebbins (Director of the Gonzaga Institute of Ethics, Gonzaga University) explores "The Meaning of Solidarity" through everyday patterns of economic and social cooperation.

Depth and Clarity.......2001-03-06
The John Henning Institute is doing God's work. S.A. Cortright has collected a beautiful series of essays on Catholic social philosophy. Between the two covers one finds a bounty of insight concerning labour, the just wage, the common good, capitalism and the human telos. Particularly helpful are the excellent responses by profs Downey, Harter, and Cawthon to the book's cornerstone essays. For any serious Catholic philosopher, or for any serious ethicist, policy wonk, or politician of any stripe, this collection is essential reading. This book highlights the fact that there is an alternate, and, I would add, 2000 year old policy synthesis which exceeds the limitations of our modern conservative and liberal social agendas. You won't get this sort of depth from the McLaughlin Group, Rush Limbaugh, or Crossfire. This book carefully avoids the tired norms of American political disourse.

Book Description
"12 Miles" is a multicultural ensemble comedy (a PG-13 story) that takes place primarily in South Florida, the Bahamas, and New Zealand. It is, above all, a people story that sits in front of horses and the horse business.
"12 Miles" has a lot of interwoven messages and spins a laugh-out-loud yarn about how one seemingly ordinary horse can cause chaos and upheaval in the lives of everyone he comes into contact with simply by his insistent stubbornness on living his life his own way.
The star of the story is Bonefish -- a gray gelding and wayward son of a former star racehorse who stubbornly refuses to race. The chaos Bopefish causes when he enters the lives of people from South Florida, Bimini (Bahamas), and both islands of New Zealand is both unpredictable and laugh-out-loud hilarious.
The four principle female characters in the story (the self-proclaimed "Posse") are all New Zealanders. The guys in the story are Americans. Destiny taps all on the shoulder and a spectacularly chaotic courtship process ensues.
Bonefish, meanwhile, spends most of his time in the Bahamas resting under a palm tree while watching his owner, Anvil Sanders, build small wooden boats by hand. Regardless whether Bonefish is in South Florida or the Bahamas, how he lives his life changes the life of everyone around him -- including the islanders.
"12 Miles" is ensemble storytelling at its romantic comedy finest. A good, positive, upbeat, creative tale with a happy ending.

Need a "feel good" read and a smile?.......2003-04-10
Weaving wonderful characters with beautiful venues and terrific pastimes, this book kindled warm memories of warm places and tugged on heartstrings stretched over some "tender territories". You needn't be a horse race fan to truly love this read, interact with the trials and comedies of relationships or be drawn into the storyline Ted Simendinger beautifully paints from Colorado, to South Beach, to Bimini and New Zealand. His insight into the frailties of Men vs. Women, and his ability to keep you hungry on multiple fronts, is marvelous.
Someone in this book will appeal to everyone, but my affinity for all the characters was established early on. It's a joy to see yourself, some of your past (and hopeful future) in a fast paced, witty and beautifully portrayed journey of men, women and beasts on a romp from flea markets to fame. If you've ever tasted long and unrequited love, thrown your fate to the winds of friendship and longed for life to come together in the most unforeseen of ways, then ride with the girls of the "Kiwi Posse" as they help fulfill the lives of unlikely American men and "Bonefish", the most lovable thoroughbred turned "beach-bum" you can imagine!
This book will help you follow your heart where you know it wants to lead you, have as much fun in as many places as you can, and realize that you need to fish whenever you can, love whenever you can and never give in to doubt that it really can be amazing in the end! Take a gamble, it's a sure thing!

New Orleans Piano Masterclass.......2007-09-22
This is an excellent songbook to get. Contrary to the previous reviewer I believe the majority of these transcriptions are accurate. As with a lot of Jazz and Blues transcriptions you cannot document the 'feel' that Professor Longhair had. The book I have certainly includes some of his solos and some of the pieces are instrumental without lyrics.
His style is a mixture of Blues/Boogie-Woogie/Rumba/Samba all mixed up together. If you want to learn to play like Prof Longhair there is no better place to start - and there are no other songbooks of his material That I know of!
Good collection of the professor's music.......2007-01-09
I have enjoyed Dr. John for years and was delighted to discover the major influence to his style. The transcriptions are good and it is a good selection of the music of Professor Longhair. It has an informative introduction that I enjoyed and keyed me in to listening to his music. Worth the money. Challenging but accessible.
Don't waste your money.......2006-12-10
I bought this book based on the fact that I am a huge Professor Longhair fan and wanted to learn how to play in a New Orleans style, and thought this would be a great place to start. Unfortunately, I have found this book to be basically useless. I have been playing piano for over 15 years and have bought many books but this has to be one of the biggest wastes of money I've come across.
Yes, it does contain lyrics to many of Fess's best known songs, but you could probably find those easily by googling the song. The basic problem I have with this book is the "arrangments". First of all, they leave out most (or in some cases) all of the right hand improvisation and touches that are integral to the Professor's playing style. What's left over are overly simplistic songs that don't teach you much about New Orleans piano. You might as well download some pfd's of public domain Scott Joplin rags if you want to learn basica ragtime technique. Because that's basically all that these arrangments consist of, since they leave out everything that made Professor Longhair into Professor Lonhair.
Secondly, the majority of these "arrangments" leave out the piano solos! Yes, I'm not joking, they just feature a short intro section, the chorus with the lyrics and a small closing tag and that's it.
I don't know about you but I sure didn't buy a Professor Longhair collection for the lyrics. If you want to learn how to sing like Fess I guess this book's for you then. Otherwise, save your money and buy a book on New Orleans piano technique instead. You won't find much of that here.
Professor Longhair Piano Book (tablature).......2006-03-15
This is the only definitive piano tablature for Professor Longhair. Includes lyrics to songs that cannot be found ANYWHERE on the internet. Many items on this site are reviewed as "Must Buy". This book is the "Only Buy". There are no substitutes or other compilations. You want the lyrics and piano tablatures for Professor Longhair songs? This IS the book!
Buy This Book!.......2000-07-06
Being a piano player myself, I know how hard it is to find someone to teach you New Orleans Style piano. (If you've ever had someone give you the 'that's not Chopin' look, then you know what I mean.) This book will help you nail down all the patterns and licks you can hear in the music, but can't quite get to your fingers yet. I found it to be really helpful not only to learn specific Professor Longhair songs, but also to learn basic New Orleans/Boogie & Blues piano riffs and styles suitable for accompanying singers or other players. This book will take you miles and miles into the world that is Professor Longhair. Definitely recommended!

Book Description
This intriguing volume provides a thorough examination of the historical roots of global climate change as a field of inquiry, from the Enlightenment to the late twentieth century. Based on primary and archival sources, the book is filled with interesting perspectives on what people have understood, experienced, and feared about the climate and its changes in the past. Chapters explore climate and culture in Enlightenment thought; climate debates in early America; the development of international networks of observation; the scientific transformation of climate discourse; and early contributions to understanding terrestrial temperature changes, infrared radiation, and the carbon dioxide theory of climate. But perhaps most important, this book shows what a study of the past has to offer the interdisciplinary investigation of current environmental problems.
Customer Reviews:
An Outstanding Introduction to the History of Climate Change Research.......2006-11-05
We often do not appreciate how ideas and concepts originated and evolved to our own time. "Climate change" is one such concept, known to all as something with which humanity must contend, but there is little appreciation of how ideas associated with it, and their connotations, have unfolded over time. "Historical Perspectives on Climate Change" offers a most useful tutorial on this subject. Written in an accessible manner by a skillful historian of meteorology, this short book (only 194 pages) offers an insightful overview of the history of how Western Civilization has understood changes in the climate. Fleming presents what would be best called essays on various episodes in the history of the scientists and other scholars who have theorized and experimented on climate change. He concentrates on the period since the Enlightenment, in which the scientific method took hold in the systematization of knowledge about the natural world, presenting a chronological account of this important subject.
Fleming discusses briefly earlier conceptions of the global environment, but it is with the dawning of Enlightenment thought that modern conceptions began to emerge. He focuses attention on the efforts of Thomas Jefferson and others to collect data and to make sense of their meteorological readings. Especially important was the belief that the Earth may be cooling, portending another ice age, and efforts to understand how and why changes in the climate might be taking place. Common conceptions of the time suggested that the combination of the Earth's hot core, changes in the sun's heat, the tilt of the Earth, and other factors probably accounted for fluctuations in the climate. Not until the work of Joseph Fourier in the nineteenth century did conditions of the atmosphere seriously enter into the equation. Others explored in detail the chemical composition of the atmosphere, the role of carbon dioxide in effecting climate change, and the place of humans in altering the environment. This led to the conclusion that the Earth is warming, and it is doing so in part because of the actions of humans on the surface. The author explores this issue in detail, and comments on some of the schemes to mitigate that warming.
Much of Fleming's work is biographical in emphasis and his portraits of key figures in this research area are fascinating. T.C. Chamberlin, Guy Stuart Callendar, Ellsworth Huntington, and Roger Revelle all emerge as towering figures in the history of climate change research. Several of them, furthermore, emerge as characters of many parts with strong appetites for fame, authority, and accomplishment.
This is a valuable introduction to a subject of real importance. Enjoy!

Human adaptation to climate change: a review of three historical cases and some general perspectives [An article from: Environmental Science and Policy]
B. Orlove
Manufacturer: Elsevier
ProductGroup: Book

This digital document is a journal article from Environmental Science and Policy, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
To study mitigation and adaptation to climate change, social scientists have drawn on different approaches, particularly sociological approaches to the future and comparative history of past societies. These two approaches frame the social and temporal boundaries of decision-making collectivities in different ways. A consideration of the responses to climate variability in three historical cases, the Classic Maya of Mexico and Central America, the Viking settlements in Greenland, and the US Dust Bowl, shows the value of integrating these two approaches.

Adhering to Virgin's successful program-guide format, this indispensible guide covers all three seasons so far.
Customer Reviews:
Incomplete, but thoroughly enjoyable.......2003-08-21
Forget the high-priced trade paperbacks, this slim little volume has all the dren you need on your favourite sci-fi show.
Yes, it doesn't have illustrations. If I wanted to look at pretty pictures, I'd watch the show.
Yes, it doesn't have much of the behind-the-scenes scuttlebutt. If I wanted that, I'd listen to the commentary tracks on the heinously over-priced DVDs.
Yes, it's written in a breezy, informative style, giving you a handy synopsis of incidents under categories like Nosferatu in Black Rubber and Get Frelled.
The book even manages to discuss the technical flaws within each episode, but does so without taking away from the enjoyment of the review.
The book's only flaw: this is the last edition, and it doesn't cover every episode. The book covers to the end of the third season, and there's lots more to happen to the crew of Moya, but it's still a very useful little book.

specialised usages.......2006-02-06
VMware is the most common commercially available virtual machine code. This book is a quick guide to how to install and use it. You should be pleased to know that the host operating system can be Microsoft or linux. However, you are restricted to an Intel CPU. A basic difference between VMware and emulation is due to this. There is no emulation of another CPU.
The book suggests several possible usages for VMware, based on customer experiences. Perhaps simply to standardise an environment for your users, if the applications they will run can do so with the performance loss involving in a virtual machine. You do need to be clear on this.
Another reason for using VMware, that does not seem to be mentioned, is if you are running a honeypot or an intrusion detection system, and want an extra level of protection.
Very Good for 4.5 Users - Good tips for new 5.0 Users.......2005-10-25
Good for new VMWare users, especially if using Workstation 4.5. Good tips for new users using VMWare version 5.0. Covers Netware and Windows clustering, including using iSCSI. Also covers version GSX and ESX. If using GSX or ESX versions exclusively instead of Workstation ...... you may want to search further.

Helps Gain Better Understanding of the Physiology of War on Loved Ones.......2007-09-25
This book was a recommended read by a family member to help understand the impact of war on the brave men and women that serve our country. I really enjoyed reading it and could not help to think of my Grandfather during many of the chronicles. If you want to understand your loved one better after returning from war, read this book. I am thankful I did.
If You Want to Understand: A Review of "On Killing".......2007-08-09
Because most of the individuals who know me are aware that I love to read, they often recommend books that they think I would enjoy reading. Many of the books that I have reviewed in The White Rhino Report came to my attention through personal recommendations. "On Killing - The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society" by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is no different, except for the fact that at least a half dozen of my friends told me that I needed to read this book. The curious thing about their recommendations was that each individual expressed his feelings about this book in almost identical terms. Each of these warriors, knowing that they were speaking to someone who has not served in the military, used a phrase like: "If you want to understand . . . you need to read `On Killing'!"
They did not say, "If you want to understand me," or "If you want to understand war," or even "If you want to understand the heart of a warrior." They left the statement hanging: "If you want to understand . . ." That truncated expression served as an all-encompassing statement that includes all of the above - and so much more.
Having read, and been captivated by, this singular book, I feel that I have begun to understand in a new way. Grossman, a decorated former Army Ranger, paratrooper and member of the faculty at West Point, has placed on the table for discussion what I would call "The Warrior's Secret." The overarching impression that Grossman left me with is that each warrior who has faced combat secretly struggles for the rest of his life with one of three powerful sets of emotions:
1) If he has been called upon to kill in battle, he wrestles with a haunting guilt over having overcome the basic human instinct not to kill our own kind. That wrestling can often lead to severe PTSD.
2) If he was faced with an opportunity to kill an enemy combatant, but chose not to kill, or found himself incapable of killing, he suffers from the secret shame and humiliation of having failed to carry out that which he was trained to do - that which defines a true warrior.
3) If he served in the military in a role that was not combat arms, or if he never had an opportunity to engage an enemy, he wonders how he would have responded if faced with that life-or-death decision. And he secretly feels like he never truly became a warrior.
For much of history, the warrior code made if difficult, if not impossible, for an individual to speak honestly about these struggles. Our military has come a long way in the past several generations in terms of understanding these psychological and emotional dynamics of warfare, and in terms of giving permission for veterans and active duty military personnel to speak openly and honestly about these formerly taboo topics. Grossman has carved out a second career in publicly and privately offering this explicit permission to those who have served in combat and who wrestle with these persistent struggles.
As soon as I finished reading the book, I placed a call to my friend, Kevin. He was one of those who had told me to read the book. He is a veteran of two deployments to Iraq. I wanted to test out on Kevin the validity of what I describe above as "The Warrior's Secret." Kevin not only confirmed that I was on the right track and was beginning to "Get it," but he also added the following comments:
"Now you need to read Grossman's next book - `On Combat.' It is more comprehensive in scope than `On Killing.' In each unit I have served in, we made sure that there was a copy of each of these books available to us to help us survive. They function as a sort of a psychological survival manual."
(Based on Kevin's recommendation, I immediately ordered "On Combat." I plan to review that book within the next few days. Stay tuned!)
To give you a direct sense of how insightful and revolutionary Grossman's writing is, I will share with you several excerpts. Grossman lays on the table the idea that historically in combat, many warriors have shied away from making a kill when they were given an opportunity to do so.
"The simple fact appears to be that, like S.L.A. Marshall's riflemen of World War II, the vast majority of rifle- and musket-armed soldiers of previous wars were consistent and persistent in their psychological inability to kill their fellow human beings. Their weapons were technologically capable , and they were physically quite able to kill, but at the decisive moment each man became, in his heart, a conscientious objector who could not bring himself to kill the man standing before him" (Page 27)
"There is ample indication of the existence of the resistance to killing and that it appears to have existed at least since the black powder era. This lack of enthusiasm for killing the enemy causes many soldiers to posture, submit, or flee, rather than fight; it represents a powerful psychological force on the battlefield; and it is a force that is discernible throughout the history of man. The application and understanding of this force can lend new insight to military history, the nature of war, and the nature of man." (Page 28)
"That the average man will not kill even at the risk of all he holds dear has been largely ignored by those who attempt to understand the psychological and sociological pressures of the battlefield. Looking another human being in the eye, making an independent decision to kill him, and watching as he dies due to your action combine to form the single most basic, important, primal and potentially traumatic occurrence of war. If we understand this, then we understand the magnitude of the horror of killing in combat. . . Why is this not often discussed? If Johnny can't kill, if the average soldier will not kill unless coerced and conditioned and provided with mechanical and mental leverage, then why has it not been understood before?" (Pages 30-31)
Grossman makes a compelling case that the poor rate at which soldiers in World Wars I and II fired their weapons when called upon to do so led to a revolution in the way in which subsequent generations of soldiers were trained - using operant conditioning techniques introduced by Skinner. As a consequence, firing rates in Korea climbed, and soared even higher in Vietnam. The result was an alarming increase in the incidence of PTSD among returning soldiers and Marines. Grossman argues that we learned to do a better job of turning men into killing machines, but we did not learn how to help them cope with the aftermath of what we had trained them to do.
"In both the Berkun and Shalit studies we see indications that fear of death and injury is not the primary cause of psychiatric casualties on the battlefield. Indeed, Shalit found that even in the face of a society and culture that tells soldiers that selfish fear of death and injury should be their primary concern, it is instead the fear of not being able to meet the terrible obligations of combat that weighs most heavily on the minds of combat soldiers. . . Research in this field has been that of blind men groping at the elephant - one grasps what he thinks is a tree, another finds a wall, and still another discovers a snake. All have a piece of the puzzle, but none is completely correct." (Page 53)
Grossman offers a fascinating look into the theory and practice of inoculating recruits and military cadets against hatred and other psychological factors.
"Combining an understanding of (a) those factors that cause combat trauma with (b) an understanding of the inoculation process permits us to understand that in most of these military schools the inoculation is specifically oriented toward hate.
The drill sergeant who screams into the face of a recruit is manifesting overt interpersonal hostility. Another effective means of inoculating a trainee against the Wind of Hate can be seen in U.S. Army and USMC pugil-stick training during boot camp or at the U.S. Military Academy and the British Airborne Brigade, where boxing matches are a traditional part of the training and initiation process. When in the face of all of this manufactured contempt and overt physical hostility the recruit overcomes the situation to graduate with honor and pride, he realizes at both a conscious and unconscious levels that he can overcome such overt interpersonal hostility. He has become partially inoculated against hate." (Page 82)
In the chapter entitled "The Burden of Killing," Grossman articulates what I see as his primary premise - and thereby offers his primary gift to the warrior community: opening up for discussion - both public and private - the secret burden that each warrior carries within his heart.
"The soldier in combat is trapped within this tragic Catch-22. If he overcomes his resistance to killing and kills an enemy soldier in close combat, he will forever be burdened with blood guilt, and if he elects not to kill, then the blood guilt of his fallen comrades and the shame of his profession, nation, and cause lie upon him. He is damned if he does, and damned it he doesn't." (Page 87)
The feedback I received from my friend, Kevin, reinforced my sense that Grossman's pioneering work has been enormously helpful to those called to serve in fields of fire in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere where our troops are deployed. The book provided me with a glimpse into the mind and heart of those who have been faced with the decision to kill or not to kill - a level of understanding I may not have been able to attain in any other way. Kevin's comment about the book's effectiveness in combat speaks loudly as a recommendation for all warriors to add this book to their arsenal of tools and weapons.
Speaking as one who has not been in combat, but who numbers among my friends many warriors, I recommend this book to anyone who desires to understand and to engage in meaningful conversation those friends and family members who have been called upon to make the awful choice to take a human life. One of the ways that we can show our gratitude to the warriors who bear these burdens that are almost unthinkable is to take a step towards them and make the effort to understand.
"If you want to understand" . . . read this book!

A must read for all.......2007-07-10
A must have for any library. This book is even more important now that all the iraq war vets are returning. even if you are a civilian you should read this book to better understand what they have gone through. No matter what any man says, taking another humans life, even when justified, still changes a person. This book atemps to explain what that change is and why it happens.
A Book for Warriors.......2007-06-27
I believe LtCol Grossman was right on the mark and the book was very well thought out and the content was accurately researched.
This book should be read by all military and police. It gives a great insight into the repercussions of having to take someones life.
It also should be read by all of our elected officials so they can see what our society is turning into and why this is happening.
Amazing book........2007-06-17

Product Description
From Publishers Weekly
Drawing on interviews, published personal accounts and academic studies, Grossman investigates the psychology of killing in combat. Stressing that human beings have a powerful, innate resistance to the taking of life, he examines the techniques developed by the military to overcome that aversion. His provocative study focuses in particular on the Vietnam war, revealing how the American soldier was "enabled to kill to a far greater degree than any other soldier in history." Grossman argues that the breakdown of American society, combined with the pervasive violence in the media and interactive video games, is conditioning our children to kill in a manner siimilar to the army's conditioning of soldiers: "We are reaching that stage of desensitization at which the infliction of pain and suffering has become a source of entertainment: vicarious pleasure rather than revulsion. We are learning to kill, and we are learning to like it." Grossman (psychology, West Point) presents three important hypotheses: 1) That humans possess the reluctance to kill their own kind; 2) that this reluctance can be systematically broken down by use of standard conditioning techniques; and 3) that the reaction of "normal" (e.g., non-psychopathic) soliders to having killed in close combat can be best understood as a series of "stages" similar to the ubiquitous Kubler-Ross stages of reaction to life-threatening disease. While some of the evidence to support his theories have been previously presented by military historians (most notably, John Keegan), this systematic examination of the individual soldier's behavior, like all good scientific theory making, leads to a series of useful explanations for a variety of phenomena, such as the high rate of post traumatic stress disorders among Vietnam veterans, why the rate of aggravated assault continues to climb, and why civilian populations that have endured heavy bombing in warfare do not have high incidents of mental illness.

Book Description
AMERICAN PASSAGES places a unique emphasis on cause and effect relationships over time, allowing students to in a complete, compelling narrative. Rather than categorizing facets of historical change into ahistorical abstractions, such as "themes" or "topics", AMERICAN PASSAGES emphasizes the intertwined nature of three key characteristics of time ¿ sequence, simultaneity, and contingency. With an unparalleled sense of clarity and purpose, the authors convey how events grow from other events, people's actions, and broad structural changes (sequence), how apparently disconnected events occurred in close chronological proximity to one another and were situated in larger, shared contexts (simultaneity), and how history suddenly pivoted because of events, personalities, and unexpected outcomes (contingency). To further highlight this unique framework, this text includes two new essay features. "Flashpoints" take a closer look at pivotal events specific to a given time and place. These events emphasize contingency and show students how key events, personal decisions have influenced historical outcomes over time. The "Enduring Issues" feature traces topics across time to emphasize how recurring patterns appear in different forms as time changes the context. Both features help students understand the historical significance of pivotal events and recurring patterns over time. By grasping these concepts, students can better apply historical lessons to their own lives. AMERICAN PASSAGES is available in the following splits: *AMERICAN PASSAGES, Comprehensive, Third Edition (Chapters 1-32) ISBN: 0495050156; *AMERICAN PASSAGES, Volume I: To 1877, Third Edition (Chapters 1-16) ISBN: 0495050628; *American Passages, Volume II: Since 1863, Third Edition (Chapters 15-32) ISBN: 0495050636.
