      Book Description

This book provides a balanced presentation of international trends in infrastructure regulation and financing. Based on recent developments in microeconomic theory, it comprehensively discusses the role of the state and the private sector in infrastructure provision.

As well as a thorough overview of the relevant theoretical issues, the authors carefully examine national experiences of private participation in infrastructure. In particular, they explore sectoral restructuring in the electricity, telecommunications, water and transport sectors. The book includes case studies from both Argentina and the UK, and places a particular focus on Germany which, for a developed country, is a peculiar latecomer in terms of infrastructure sector reform.

Well argued and rich in new insights, this book offers a meticulous and informative analysis of current trends in infrastructure privatization and deregulation. Among the authors are well-known specialists as well as younger researchers who provide a fresh perspective on the issue. The book will be of interest and relevance to researchers, academics, policymakers and international organizations interested in regulation and the modernization of infrastructure both in developed and developing countries.

            Book Description

Their albums enter the charts at #1. Fans follow them around the country, soaking up the incredible energy of their sold-out live concerts. From gigging at an Earth Day celebration and more frat parties than anyone can remember, Dave Matthews and his phenomenal band have electrified rock 'n' roll America. Now a music industry insider takes you to the heart of the Dave Matthews Band -- their meteoric rise to superstardom and the most extensive listing ever published of their tours and smash recordings, including the bootlegs that the band encourages.

Charlottesville, Virginia, 1991: Dave Matthews meets and jams with drummer Carter Beauford, bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist Leroi Moore, and violinist Boyd Tinsley. The band tours extensively for the next two years and puts out the self-released live album, Remember Two Things. Their enthusiastic grass-roots following in the Southeast and groove-ridden jams earn them a major label deal with RCA Records and the release of Under the Table and Dreaming, giving fans two smash hits and garnering a pair of Grammy nominations. But it is the heartfelt ballad "Crash Into Me" from their third album, Crash, that vaults them into the alternative-rock mainstream. Superb critical acclaim for their fourth bestselling set, Before These Crowded Streets, lands Dave on the cover of Spin, dubbed "the King of Rock."

Through interviews with close associates, collaborators, tour mates, and friends, along with a complete discography and "gigography" (the definitive list of all the band's phenomenal live shows), this book takes you inside the Dave Matthews universe. This multiracial quintet's unique mix of jazz, blue-eyed funk, world rhythms, and sensitive lyricism speaks to people across generations.

5 out of 5 stars good enough but outdated.......2005-09-27

buy the updated one and read those reviews, this version doesn't really capture the band anymore.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive DMB Bible..........2004-08-09

If you love DMB, this book is a perfect way to get an inside scoop on the band's history. From the early days to the stadium gigs, 'Music for the People' tracks Dave, Stefan, Boyd, Carter, and Leroi as they become one of the most popular bands of a generation. Complete with a discography and a gigography (a complete list of every show the band has ever played), this is a must-have for casual fans and hardcore Daveheads alike. I highly recommend it.

            1 out of 5 stars Horrible Book.......2003-02-01

Being a fan of The Dave Matthews Band, I purchased this book hoping to find out more insight to the backgound about the band. I was surprised to find many inaccuracies. One would think that they would check the facts before pulishing it. If you want accurate information of the Dave Matthews Band than I would suggest you read "Step Into the Light".

3 out of 5 stars Great for the new DMB Groupie.......2000-07-22

This book is a great book for the fan that has recently become enchanted with the unique and exquisite sound of the Dave Matthews Band. It includes biographies on the entire band, including the story of how they all came together. Find out how Dave, a native of S. America, moved to the U.S. permenately after being served papers to join the S. African army. The back of the book is the most useful, listing every album, every gig, and also micellaneous covers that the band has played throughout the years. The only down-side to this book is its redundancy. Throughout the chapters, every song is listed with it's length in time. Basically, every chapter reads like the last. On the positive, the book gives the stories behind nearly ever song. A must have for the TRUE DMB fan.

5 out of 5 stars Who can forget the soothing bass interludes of Doug Scoones?.......2000-06-20

A book that isn't afraid to peer through the rosy gloss that has surrounded DMB for much of its meandering journey, Martell's 'Music For The People' offers a pleasant alternative to the tedious drivel heaped on most popular bands in the way of guides and insider studies. Martell brings an informal, conversational tone to the book that works nicely, particularly in contrast to the stuffy and institutionalized format of other DMB puff pieces like Light. In particular, the book is a joy to read while actually listening to DMB; a quality that should not be lost on true fans.

              Book Description

Umberto Eco is known among academics for his literary and cultural theories, and to an enormous international audience through his novels The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum. Peter Bondanella offers the first comprehensive study in English of Eco's works. In clear and accessible language, he traces the development of Eco's interests, from medieval aesthetics to semiotics to popular culture, and shows how Eco's own fiction grows out of his literary and cultural theories. Bondanella also provides a full bibliography of works by and about Eco, arguably the most famous Italian writer since Dante.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun, but a few more pages would have been great.......2004-09-17

Jason Hall's Visual Guidebook to the animated Justice League is colorful and fun. Tykes should like it. Like all the DK books, great care has been taken in chosing the captions and accompanying text.

It's a great way to introduce the younger readers to the world of the Justice League, though I would have waited a few years until the Justice League Unlimited run had been completed, so the book had a great amount of stories to draw fun. It also goes the extra mile with some pages on Aquaman, the Atom, and Adam Strange.

A few flaws for the completist out there. The info on Hawkgirl is somewhat inaccurate after the revelations in the second season finale, "Starcrossed," the panals are mostly taken from the comics rather than the animated series, and some "fun" pages like a detailed blueprint of what goes where in the Watchtower might have given the little ones a bit more material to chew on.
Again, some material on other characters such as Metamorpho, Darksaid, Dr. Fate, would have been great.

Still, it's fun for what it is. Hopefully DK will produce a few more of these in the years to come.

                    Book Description

This book is the only source that provides comprehensive, current, and correct information on problem solving using modern heuristics. It covers classic methods of optimization, including dynamic programming, the simplex method, and gradient techniques, as well as recent innovations such as simulated annealing, tabu search, and evolutionary computation. Integrated into the discourse is a series of problems and puzzles to challenge the reader. The book is written in a lively, engaging style and is intended for students and practitioners alike. Anyone who reads and understands the material in the book will be armed with the most powerful problem solving tools currently known.

This second edition contains two new chapters, one on coevolutionary systems and one on multicriterial decision-making. Also some new puzzles are added and various subchapters are revised.

The material is alright but it is just kind of old. I can not tell from the original description otherwise, I will
                    not have bought it.

                    5 out of 5 stars Optimization Mini-Library.......2007-02-20

This is the best book I have in my optimization library. It is excellent for students and teachers as well. It introduces you to optimization using a simple language, practical examples explained in a very didactical manner. It surveys optimization techniques and categorizes it in a very well-arranged and simplified format. You wouldn't have to read tens of pages with unsightly symbols, messed with subscripts and superscripts to understand a single optimization technique.
It also brings an uplifting introduction to the concept of problem solving. I highly recommend this book to Optimization and Mathematics students and teachers.
Read the book, once you are done, look at the table of contents and give a five minutes lecture on each single title and subtitle, which is what you will be capable of doing at the end.

4 out of 5 stars It's not the technique, it's the logic behind it.......2006-07-24

Most evolutionary computation or math books deal with the techniques of solving problems. This book teachs you how to think of a solution for the problem you face, and not what problems are appropriate for the technique in hand.

The logic is that when you do a craft work, you do pick the appropriate tool from your tools box, but you don't grasp a tool and then find a job to go with it, which is the case when you can only handle this tool.

5 out of 5 stars improve your problem solving ability.......2006-02-20

The authors have updated their successful first edition, though the latter, printed in 99, was scarcely obsolete. A heuristic can be basically a rule of thumb, dressed up in fancier language. What the authors intend is for you to develop an intuition about when to use modern algorithms. Where is almost every case, these are actually implemented on a computer; a reflection of the cheap availability of computing power to most readers.

The book is a good complement to various standard algorithm texts, like those by Sedgewick, Aho and Knuth. You can consider this book as standing a level above those. [Though Knuth's books also do an excellent job of suggesting when to use or modify algorithms. ]

The level of discussion here is not of a strict, heavy mathematical approach. It can be read as informal guidelines, that discuss the gist of such ideas as simulated annealing and evolutionary methods. There is a wide range of example problems, to motivate you in understanding what might be used to solve them.

5 out of 5 stars get this book!, read it!, understand it! :).......2006-01-01

i have not finished reading this book, but it's 'worth it' if only for the first two chapters! :) anyone interested in dynamical systems (control aspects), general problem solving, AI, and human thinking should read and understand this book! :) work the problems! :) think! enjoy! :)

                          Book Description

Death came early and often to the people of Tokugawa Japan, as it did to the rest of the pre-modern world. Yet the Japanese reaction to death struck foreign observers and later scholars as particularly subdued. In this pioneering study, Harold Bolitho translates and analyzes some extraordinary accounts written by three Japanese men of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries about the death of a loved one-testimonies that challenge the impression that the Japanese accepted their bereavements with nonchalance. The three accounts were written by a young Buddhist priest mourning the death of his child, by the poet Issa, who recorded his father's final illness, and by a scholar and teacher who described his wife's losing struggle with diabetes. Placing their journals in the context of contemporary religious beliefs, customs and literary traditions, Bolitho offers provocative insights into a previously hidden world of Japanese grief.

                                  Book Description

No place on Earth has a better chance to reconcile people and nature than the Pacific Northwest: the greenest part of history's richest civilization. State of the Northwest—newly revised and updated for 2000—is the only comprehensive health check for the region stretching from southeast Alaska to northern California and from the Pacific Ocean to the crest of the Rockies.

Six years after Northwest Environment Watch published the first edition of State of the Northwest, the region's ecosystems are still in critical condition. Yet our environment remains less degraded than almost anywhere else in the industrial world. We in the Northwest still have a rare opportunity to build a sustainable way of life—one that can last.

This book shows the region from a different point of view: a salmon's. After traveling with a chinook from Idaho mountains to the Gulf of Alaska and back, you may never look at the Northwest the same way again.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling Discussion of Northwest's Present and Future........2004-08-17

In State of the Northwest, Ryan dicusses the human ecological and environmental impact in the northwest region (northern California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, western Montana, British Columbia, and southeast Alaska). He uses the life cycle of a Chinook salmon to introduce each chapter. Using the salmon's growth and travel as a guide, Ryan discusses each ecosystem she encounters, beginning with her birth and concluding with her death in the same Idaho river.

State of the Northwest contains an abundance of complex information, but is highly readable and never feels pendantic. Using the salmon life cycle is effective and clever because it leads Ryan to discuss each ecosystem as interrelated components of a larger story. The salmon serves to personify, introducing each chapter with a first-hand perspective, while the rest of the chapter presents the nuts-and-bolts information.

State of the Northwest presents an honest, succinct introduction to the region's current environmental status and the potential for conservation. While he acknowledges that much of the region has been damaged beyond recovery, the northwest is unique because many areas have only been minimally degraded (or not at all), and many native species remain. In this sense, the much of the northwest environment can still be preserved in it's natural state; an opportunity long since lost to most of the developed world.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Primer on the Pacific Northwest.......2000-07-25

State of the Northwest 2000 is a fascinating primer on the unique ecology of the Pacific Northwest and the threats our environment faces. Ryan livens up the material by telling the region's story from the point of view of a salmon. The book highlights all of the major environmental problems the region is facing, from decimated salmon runs to cleaning up the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Even though the problems are many and complex, the ultimate message is hopeful. The Northwest is one of the least degraded parts of the world and has the potential to achieve true sustainability. Also, the writing style is lively, a definite plus when reading a book on such serious topics. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about enviornmental issues in this part of the world.
