This book develops macroeconomic theory for small open economies characterized by the sort of controls which make much of existing neoclassical economics inapplicable to developing countries. It distinguishes between sustainable combinations of policies and incompatible control regimes. The
authors analyze the changes needed to maintain compatibility and the consequences of failing to do so. They also consider optimal investments in response to a temporary shock. The second half of the book contains an analysis of two temporary trade shocks in Africa, in both compatible and
incompatible control regimes, demonstrating the applicability of the theory. It shows that in a compatible regime, the regime and the fiscal response to changes in revenue may make the reaction to a shock grossly inefficient. Under incompatibility, an economy exposed to a negative shock may go into
steep decline, while responses to conventional policies may be reversed.

Open-Economy Macroeconomics for Developing Countries focuses on fiscal, monetary and exchange rate issues of importance to less developed economies. The book argues that the dichotomy between the short-term macroeconomic stabilization goal and the long-term economic growth objective commonly found in developing countries' policy framework is inappropriate. The authors report empirical evidence to support the proposition that macroeconomic stability is a pre-requisite for sustained economic growth and the root of macroeconomic instability in developing countries lies in the government budget deficits.

The book discusses the stabilization tools available to deal with capital flows, supply shocks and the effects of financial deregulation. It opens with a discussion of macroeconomic policy problems for open developing economies and an historical overview of the international institutions such as IMF, GATT and UNCTAD. The authors then provide a comprehensive review of macroeconomic models which are popularly used to analyze policy dilemmas related to internal and external balances of open economies. Having reviewed the institutional and theoretical framework, the authors assess the macroeconomic impact of financial deregulation, capital flows and foreign investment. They address the debt crisis, financial instability, capital flight, currency substitution and exchange rate arrangements. The authors also consider more general issues such as the political economy of macroeconomic management and the institutional framework that may enhance credibility and effectiveness of macroeconomic policy. In conclusion, they stress that the openness of an economy itself acts as a constraint on macroeconomic mismanagement and hence may enhance economic growth.

This comprehensive book will be an important addition to the literature, and will be of use to advanced undergraduates and graduates of development economics, development studies and financial and monetary economics.

This book had the style like her offical website but it just wasn't personal enough. It had the information we all already know. Good parts about the books are the pictures.

A Biography with Pictures.......2003-11-16

This book provides a decent survey of the life and music of Canadian singer Avril Lavigne. The main drawback of the book is that the author apparently never interviewed Avril for it. Also, he apparently never interviewed anyone even connected with Avril. So this book is written from a distance.

Mr. Thorley describes Lavigne's childhood growing up in Napanee, Ontario. She lived with her religious parents and two siblings. Avril was a tomboy from the start, playing sports with the boys. She played the guitar from an early age, practicing on it for hours at a time. She sang in her local church choir and at country fairs. While still in her early teens she got to perform on stage with Shania Twain.

Thorley describes how Avril was discovered and was eventually offered a record deal. After being signed, she moved to an apartment with her brother in Greenwich Village, NYC. Her first attempts at making music with those assigned to her did not work out well. But she eventually met songwriter Clif Magness and they hit it off. Once they paired up, the songs started coming for her debut album "Let Go". According to the author, Avril co-wrote all the songs. And Thorley does a good job of describing the style, lyrics and overall appeal of the various songs off "Let Go". This book also provides some quotes from Avril about what inspired some of her songs.

Throughout the book, Thorley gives Avril credit for being independent and refusing to be molded into someone she was not. Her individuality comes out in her songs as well as her clothing style.

This book also describes the success and chart positions of "Let Go" and some of Avril's singles. And many of the awards are listed which Avril won.

Besides the commentary, this book also provides numerous good, upclose photos of Lavigne.

In summary, this book provides a well-written survey of Avril's personality, her life and her music. Until someone with access to the singer writes a book about her, this volume may be the best one out there.

Joyce J. Evans - Dreamweaver MX 2004 Complete Course.......2006-01-17

I am almost half way through this course. Out of all the books that I picked up I found this book the most clear, colourful and one of the easiest to use. The reason I am writing the review is because I saw the low score it is getting. I feel some people will miss a great opportunity in learning how to put a web page together by taking heed the rating its getting. The price might be high if your not that interested. Cheap if you push through the discomfort of making an effort and become a web designer, which you will become if you do push yourself.

Doesn't Deliver.......2005-11-22

This book covers all the bells and whistles and is the same approach that other books cover. The result is the same, a big mess that confuses all beginners.

Not too shabby........2005-05-09

This book is not quite a "complete course" like the title says, but it is pretty good still. You just read through each section doing the little follow along projects that the author tells you how to do. The book is not that hard to follow, some of the other reviews here are a little too harsh. I am just a regular person with a little web design experience, and this book is no problem to keep up with. Overall, for the price the book is a little skimpy, but it is one of the few that when you are done you will have created a complete website, although it may be for a FAKE company and not you. I guess that all-in-all it is not the best or most informative Dreamweaver MX book out there, but it is more like a classroom experience than alot of the others, which can not ony make it easier to follow, but easier to stay interested in.

Confusing and disturbing..........2005-04-01

Since it seems there is a discrepancy in the other two reviews listed here, let's make mine the deciding vote for now. I have not been a computer instructor, violinist, nor have I smoked crack in an Ikea or done a Mormon book-a-thon. I am an average guy with mediocre basic computer skills. I found this book to be totally confusing. I tried to follow the tutorials closely, but I found that there were horrible gaps in the information necessary for me to get very far with it. The author claims that the book can be used by "beginners", and while I am not a complete beginner, I had trouble understanding how to do very much after Chapter 2. For someone with a good understanding of HTML and other design programs, this might be a good introduction to Dreamweaver, but for me, it just made me go out and buy Adobe Go Live because the interface is familiar and the program not too hard to understand.

Very Helpful.......2004-11-18

My gosh, that previous review is harsh. Thankfully, I didn't read it before purchasing this book. That other reviewer must have an extremely low frustration threshhold (or maybe works for a competing publisher?) because the truth is that through this book Joyce Evan really got me up to speed with Dreamweaver MX with a minimum of pain. Not only that, her website reflects a tremendous respect for customers and readers. I have worked as a concert violinist, a music teacher, a college computer science instructor and cirriculum developer, and I have seen a wide variety of teaching materials. This book ranks with the best.

Fun and interesting.......2004-07-21

I found this book at my library and it looked intriguing so I checked it out. That was yesterday and today I'm almost done with it. Most of the entries are interesting, even if simply quibbling. Many of them I was already aware of as being fallacies (like spinach making you strong or that Columbus was one of the few of his day who thought the earth to be round) but there were still many more where I found my self going, "oh wow!" or "aha!" or "oh, interesting." (the real title of "Whistler's Mother", the mistaken identity of The Jazz Singer being the first "talkie," and finding that Thoreau was never really a recluse at all) One of my favorite sections is the one on religion and specifically the Bible--especially when the source is the Bible itself! (there was no *apple*, and Noah did not necessarily take 2 of each animal on his ark, oh and Lucifer is not the Devil.)

At other times I was just happy to see an oft misquoted passages or misconceptions corrected (like the famous lines "Play it again, Sam" being attributed to Humphry Bogart's character in Casablance--that's simply not what he said in the movie!" or the fac that Marie Antoinette never said "let them eat cake"! the poor girl has gone down in history as a horrible, unthinking, elitist pig which is just simply unfair).

Of course there are many entries that don't interest me in the least ("who invented baseball") but it's easy to skip over those and skim others. It's one of those books that you can pick up, read a few pages at random, learn a thing or two and put down again. Of course, you could also sit yourself in your room for hours determined to become one of the "enlightened ones" like yours truly and try to read the entire book in two days (only a couple hundred pages of quick reading). The writing style is very unimposing and almost chatty and I even found myself laughing out loud every now and then--although I can not garentee this response out of everyone as I have been told I have a rather dry sense of humour. Anyway, I found it fun and possibly useful for upcoming games of trivial pursuit.

"Everybody is wrong," including Tuleja.......2003-02-24

There are plenty of interesting and useful facts in this book. However, some of Tuleja's "facts" are simply quibbling over technicalities. The Emancipation Proclamation freed no slaves? Well, not actually on the day it was issued, no. But since it made slaves in rebellious areas free as soon as those areas were under Union control, it did free millions of slaves. To say it freed no slaves is like saying no one died as a result of World War II because no battles between Allies and Axis took place on September 1, 1939. George Washington was not the first President of the United States? Technically, the term "president" was used earlier in U.S. history, but in every sense that we mean "president" (i.e., the Constitutional sense), Washington was first... as acknowledged by every list of U.S. presidents since Washington's time. It's not as though people of the time instantly forgot the earlier "presidents"; they just considered them irrelevant. And so on. Again, many of the facts in the book are correct and significant, but on some occasions, Tuleja lets a need for contrarianism get the better of him.

Interesting Book.......1999-07-24

I thought this book was very interesting and I learned a few things. Somethings I had always known, some I just discovered recently like what the Emacipation Proclaimation was really all about and somethings I was surprised to learn while reading the book. The original book is almost 20 years old so many of the fallacies have been brought up a long time ago. Still if you are interested in history or myths and legends this book is great to have.

Seriously overpriced here but a 5 star book.......2007-07-06

You can buy this book (the penguin edition) for about $10 by the way (it is the edited version however about 115 pages)

Anyway, this is an wonderful book, Masudi describes a 9th - 10th century world of Northern Spain and its wars with Andalusia, France and its powerful king, Russia and its warlike pagan people, the ancient Turks, the Indians and their strange customs, Egyptian pyramids and ancient nations and Chinese all put together with stories about the peoples, ancient tales and adventures. This is a great travel book.

Anyone who like reading Marco Polo or ibn Batutta will love this.
