A Mixed Bag.......2006-11-03

In the end, this book wasn't what I hoped it would be, but was still worth the read. As a cabbie in Boston, I picked this up hoping to get a feel for the cab business in NY. And as a history buff, I was particularly interested in the promise of a good back-story. Unfortunately, there's very little history here. Despite the book's extensive footnotes section, most of the "history" comes from the memories of a few old-time drivers, and is generally concerned with settling grudges and exposing exploitation. In addition, this book reads like a doctoral thesis in hardcover. "White middle class suburbanites" get almost as much page time as the immigrant drivers. And there's barely a word about the interesting job these drivers have, instead the focus is on their place as it relates to globalization, exploitation of Third World labor, and "neoliberal economic practices." Not exactly what I thought I was getting into.

That being said, even though I'm in Boston and not New York, I can safely say that the subjects of Mr. Mathew's book are not exaggerating, and the tale he tells is true at its core - driving a cab is a tough job, and the driver has to dodge the brokers, the cops, the city and the frequently abusive passengers just to make a basic wage. If you're looking for some scholarly views on the function of immigrant labor in cities, strategies for labor organizing in a diverse workforce, or another reason to distrust Giuliani, this is a great read. If you're looking for a good history of cabs in NYC, or just an interesting peek into the lives of the people who risk life and limb to roam the streets, this isn't it. I'm still waiting for that book.

A final nit-pick: as you'd expect from an organizer for the Taxi Workers Alliance, there's not a single word about the possible role of the drivers in the heat brought down on them. In my view, it's simply irresponsible to ignore the significant number of rude, ignorant, criminal and even dangerous people who drive cabs. If I were given the choice between reforming the lease agreement (an odious situation, to be sure) and cleaning the Boston fleets of the worst drivers, I'd probably boot the drivers. There are issues in the industry that go beyond race, class and economics, and even those issues go much deeper than Mr. Mathews takes them.

Taxi! comes from Biju Mathew, a long-time organizer of the Alliance, and uses interactions from the drivers themselves to reveal the history of the taxi business. Chapters focus on labor struggles and urban politics in New York as much as on immigrant history and influences on the taxi industry as a whole.

NOT WHAT I THOUGHT.......2007-07-02

I bought this quiz book for my daughter who is 12. questions were way too hard for her. surely this is a book for real Lucille Ball fans. Not just I Love Lucy fans. For real I Love Lucy fans I would suggest getting the Lucy Race to Fame game.. This game is soley based on the I Love Lucy show (which my daughter LOVES) and it was made by fans, so lots of questions are what we the fans would be able to answer.

Comprehensive guide to features, but little else.......2004-10-15

I'm using Home Studio 2002 XL, which as one of the reviewers pointed out is basically just a cut down version of Sonar 2. I had hoped that this book would help me to really learn how to use the advanced features of Home Studio/Sonar, but I was disappointed to find little advice on technique in the book.

It's a very comprehensive overview of the features of the program, but apart from a few small features I'd overlooked there was very little that I hadn't managed to already learn from the included help files (which are pretty good) or previous experience with Sequencers and using MIDI.

In particular I was interested in more information on how best to arrange and mix songs, in particular using aux-buses, but I found that less time was spent on this topic than on explaining the different effects (in more detail than I thought necessary).

Perhaps I'm being a little harsh, and perhaps I'm looking for a different kind of book. I work with computers for a living, so I'm used to finding my way around new software - I guess if you aren't then this is probably a good tour of what the software can do.

Great book!.......2004-09-23

Sonar 2.0 is such a complicated program. I haven't even messed with many of the features, including MIDI, but have gotten quite good at audio editing. This book made a huge difference. I found it much clearer and easier to follow than the online help or manual that came with Sonar. Highly recommended!

Good for Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 Users as well!.......2003-10-29

This is a good book for Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 (and XL) users as well, because Home Studio 2004 is basically the same as Sonar 2 with a few missing features that Home Studio 2004.

I did a comparison of it to my recently acquired 2004 XL upgrade and other than the synchronization function, a couple of UI changes (Snap to Grid button changed locations), and a few effects that Home Studio XL doesn't give you, everything works identical to the Sonar 2 version in the book.

I haven't read the Cakewalk Power Book, but I did notice it looked thinner on the shelves than Sonar 2, and chose to buy Sonar 2 because I thought it was more comprehensive. I've been very happy about the purchase and what I've learned about Home Recording.

A must for any Sonar user!.......2003-06-03

Sonar 2 Power! is an excellent book. It is, by far, the best book available on Sonar, and a must have for anyone who uses Sonar. I have found it was great for intitially getting up to speed on the software. And now that I know the software much better, it is still full of tons of helpful information. Sonar 2 Power! lets you quickly dive right into those features you are interested in. Best of all, the author, Scott Garrigus, is able to make learning quick and enjoyable. It is clear that Scott has a great deal of enthusiasm for making music using his computer and Sonar; he does a very good job of getting this enthusiasm across, which makes the book all the more enjoyable to read. The author has a Website...for his readers.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Cakewalk's Sonar!.......2003-05-25

I review this book as one who does not own this particular piece of software, but as a prospective Sonar user. I wanted to do a little research to see if Sonar was the way I wanted to go, and I found this book extremely informative. It makes what might be a scary program for the novice very approachable and user-friendly. If I do wind up purchasing Sonar, it's unlikely I'll even need to read the manual with this excellent resource available to me. Outstanding!!

You can read the text, but all the illustrations are so pixelated that you can't read them. A waste of money.

Invaluable resource if you own Sonar 2!.......2003-12-18

Scott goes beyond the manual (which is decent) and shows you how to do things you will need for real life projects.

If you want to get the most out of Sonar and you donït want to waste hours of trial and error time then get this book.

I have ordered Sonar 3 Power and will buy anything Scott puts out. I donït have time to fool around with software manuals! They offer lots of information but you spend countless hours wading through manuals just to get just the most important information you need to have for your every day projects.

Cakewalk doesnït provide much information on the plugins that come with Sonar. This is where Scottïs information becomes in valuable because he covers the features buried within the program.

Thanks Scott. Canït wait for your tutorial CDs to become available!

Poorly written.......2007-09-26

As a former 2/75 Ranger I basically bought the book to find out about more recent missions and activities of the Regiment. I found the book to not be a history as much as a personal opinion of political decisions, the Regiment and the Army. Time and time again he uses his opinion as part of the history and uses "his experience" to speculate what might have happened. I expected a history but that is not what this is. I wish I hadn't of spent the money on this book.

I am a Ranger currently serving in 2nd Batt at Ft. Lewis. This book is very poorly written, and is interjected with the political views of the auther (someone who could have used a ghost-writer). I appreciate Mir's service, but I wasted money on this book on my last deployment, introducing it to the burn pile rather than lugging it back home. It did do well on the fire, so if you want to shell out your money for bonfire fuel, be my guest. If you want accurate and well-written information on my beloved regiment, look elsewhere!

Very let down............2006-05-15

If you wanna learn about ranger history after 1974, there is a lot of basic info in here. If you wanna learn about anything before 1974 - go somewhere else. The history of the ranger up to 1974 is compressed into 100 pages and I found one MAJOR mistake - the author claims that the 2nd ranger bn was not the first unit on top of point du hoc, he claims that the 116th reg of the 29th infantry was there first. He even quotes a section of stephen ambrose's "D-day" to back it up, only he quotes from the chapter about the 5th rangers and the 116th at Omaha. If he made a simple mistake like that one, how do I know that the rest of the book isnt filled them? All in all, I'm glad I got this book as a gift, because it isnt worth the money.....

Poorly Written.......2005-12-29

As someone who will read anything about Rangers I knew I was in trouble a few pages into the book and I didn't think I wanted to finish it. This book seems to be a poorly thrown together collection of anecdotes, unnecessary appendices and the authors own political viewpoints. The anecdotes/oral history content was both the best and worst of the book. The good ones (such as the Ranger Battalion Surgeon) I found to be extremely interesting however, most were expletive laced blog type content that held no historical value for me whatsoever. It's a good looking (and extremely heavy) book but I recommend looking elsewhere.

This is a handy, portable guide to opera: composers, artists, national trends. The authors have done a good job of ferreting out information and putting it together. If you just need to check which opera has a prima donna called Isabella (Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri) or the definition of a covered tone, this is a good book to grab.

Would you trust it?.......2004-08-10

Would this give you confidence?

On the first reading I had close to 147 objections by the end of letter C and most of these were factual errors. I wrote to OUP and received what I perceived as smug replies.

Eight basses (De Vries p190, Krivchenya p386, Piragov p557, Reysen p597, Rossi-Lemeni p612, Shalyapin p655, Gustav Siehr p658 and David Ward p758) are credited with Mozart's Don Basilio in their repertoires while the lyric tenor Lemeshev is credited with "Mozart's Count Almaviva".

The entry "chorus" states "Verdi's Nabucco (1842) where the opposing factions of Egypt and Israel" Wrong country, wrong continent.

Check the musical ranges under "soprano", "mezzo-soprano", "contralto" , "tenor", "baritone" and "bass" against the score and you will find it a laborious chore. It is possible that Messrs Warrack and West found similarly because the ranges given are not always correct. In a profession where the difference of a semitone can make a role possible or impossible, we read that Dandini and the Count in Capriccio range from c to a flat', when Dandini is actually G to f', a fourth out at the bottom and a minor third at the top. The Count in Capriccio is from A flat on page 159 of the score to g' on page 120.

Jupiter in Orphee aux Enfers is credited with the bass range from the Amateur Operatic Society Version of the score instead of the baritone range in the professional. Perhaps the authors could go to Offenbach's various professional versions and correct me here.

On pages 12, 16, and 230 we read about "vocal chords" instead of "vocal cords", a common mistake, a chord being two notes sounded together and vocal cords being the vibrating strips of flesh which produce speech and song.

Under "Balzac" a list of obscure operas is provided but there is no entry for Oscar Wilde.

According to ODO the action of The Fiery Angel starts in Cologne and goes to Cologne.

Page 1 "Abigaille. Nabucco's daughter". The plot hinges on the fact she isn't.

Page2 "Abul Hassan ...(bar), the eponymous Barber of Bagdad" He's a heavy bass , just llok at his opening phrase in the score.

Page 4. "Nixon's visit to China in 1972, the first by a Western leader" Australia's Gough Whitlam beat him there.

Page 5 "Addio fiorito asil. Pinkerton's (ten) aria in Act II of Puccini's Madama Butterfly" It's in Act III in my score.

"Adelaide. City in South Australia. The first opera staged was La Muette de Portici in 1840" No, Rob Roy. "followed by an Italina season in 1865" Sorry 1856. There are several errors following in this entry.

Nevertheless, the book makes an excellent doorstopper.
