      Book Description

This book provides an analysis of the endogenous mechanisms that govern the dynamic processes in capitalist economies. A nonlinear IS-LM version of a macromodel is developed in which 'real' and 'financial' feed-back mechanisms lead to income distribution-employment dynamics along with fluctuations in aggregate demand and the capacity utilisation rate. Emphasis is placed on the relevance of demand constraints in firms' pricing strategies, within the context of imperfectly competitive markets, and its implications for the dynamics of income distribution in the cyclical process. The 'financial' mechanisms appear in terms of the effects of the endogenous liquidity creation process on the dynamics of firms' indebtedness. The stress is on the two-fold nature of "finance": it supports the accumulation process and enhances growth, and yet it can lead to financial fragility and act as a source of systemic instability.

                    Book Description

The Darker Side of the Renaissance weaves together literature, semiotics, history, historiography, cartography, and cultural theory to examine the role of language in the colonization of the New World. Exploring the many connections among writing, social organization, and political control, including how alphabetic writing is linked with the exercise of power, Walter D. Mignolo claims that European forms of literacy were at the heart of New World colonization. It has long been acknowledged that Amerindians were at a disadvantage in facing European invaders because native cultures did not employ the same kind of texts (hence "knowledge") that the Europeans valued. Yet no one but Mignolo has so thoroughly examined either the process or the implications of conquest and destruction through language. The book continues to challenge commonplace understandings of New World history and to stimulate new colonial and postcolonial scholarship.
Walter D. Mignolo is Professor in the Department of Romance Studies and the Program in Literature, Duke University.

                        4 out of 5 stars Hogan's History - More Hit than Miss.......1998-09-12

At last! An in-depth history of one of the most memorable if not orginal sitcoms. Royce's book takes the reader back and behind the beginnings, middles and ends of the series as well as touching on the whereabouts of the participants since. It is a easy read and pleasing to any fan. It would probably help someone just discovering the series also. It is obvious that Royce enjoys her subject, but never lets you believe they were portraying history as it was. However, the pictures and artwork were a bit underwhelming. There were a few rare photos and such but with the abundance of TV memoirs etc. out in this nostalgia obsessed culture we inhabit, a bit more color etc. might have completed the picture more thoroughly. That aside, BUY THIS BOOK!!! And enjoy, then go watch one of the reruns.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Hero - ic Effort.......1997-10-15

I have a passion for collecting books about television shows, and have read them all from Bewitched to Taxi to the Twilight Zone to Get Smart, but they all pale in comparison to "Hogan's Heroes". I wish every one of the others had an episode guide as detailed as this one, as well as the excellent cast biographies and histories of the show and the persons who made it happen. Exceptionally well researched, thoughtfully written, there is none better!

5 out of 5 stars As Sgt. Shultz would say, there is NOTH-ING more complete!.......1996-12-03

This book looks and reads like the carefully researched work it is. The appearance was a bit disappointing; it looked like a book I might find in the library and use for a college thesis. The photos, all black-and-white, are inside in various sections. But the text more than made up for the lack of visual pizazz. Separate sections on each actor, plus smaller bits on guest stars and recurring characters, added greatly to the overall tapestry of this work. The author answered questions such as why did Kinchloe's character leave the show (when the actor left, the show never addressed why or how Kinch left camp), and provided interesting sidelights on the relationship between Bob Crane and Sigfried Valdis (Klink's second Frauline Helga). The episode guide is extensive and complete. It perhaps takes up more of the book than I would like. I would have preferred more detail on the actors today, for instance. Overall, though, if you enjoy Hogan's Heroes, I can't imagine a more complete source. I have had this book for two months and I am still enjoying the many tidbits of information spread throughout it.

Adam Bromwich's objective in PeopleSoft HRMS Reporting is to synchronize the perspectives of technical people (PeopleSoft designers and administrators) and functional people (managers who use PeopleSoft). If technicians know what managers need and managers know what technicians can do, more productive enterprises will result. Bromwich succeeds admirably, explaining the human resources, payroll, and benefits aspects of the PeopleSoft HRMS database. Taking a table-by-table approach to the information PeopleSoft stores, the book explains each field in many of the most useful tables and details unusual formatting where it's an issue. He also explains how various pieces of data relate to one another and how best to access them. In one sense, this is a guided tour of a great big relational database.

What's neat about Bromwich's style is his frequent inclusion of workaday tricks and shortcuts for getting things done quickly and easily. These aren't the contrived "hints and tips" that characterize so many software books. Rather, they're practical procedures that the author has learned on the job as a consultant. He's also quick to clarify confusing aspects of PeopleSoft's interface, explaining, for example, that a pay run ID is not the same as a user run ID or a run control ID. He's also careful to explain how PeopleSoft has changed through its revisions, documenting how what used to be a straightforward record of U.S. Social Security numbers is now a more complex facility for handling many countries' citizen-identification systems. --David Wall

Topics covered: The structure and contents of three major PeopleSoft databases: human resources, payroll, and benefits. Detailed attention goes to dates, control tables, personal information tables, department trees, payroll runs, tax issues, and query design with the SQR language.

This is a good book for beginners on Peoplesoft. Some of the core concepts are well explained. I am told there are not many books around on peoplesoft that are good and this one ranks high..

It is truly a thorough documentation of every important part of PeopleSoft HRMS. It is a handy-dandy book for anybody working in HRMS. Thanks to the author for taking time and putting thoughts to write such a gem.

I am a DBA and wanted to work on building a warehouse for PeopleSoft HRMS along with generating reports for the client. This book really helped me and my team to understand the hr/payroll concepts quickly. If you are a DBA/developer working in Peoplesoft environment, good to have this book in your library.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure for technical and functional users.......2002-07-28

This book is a treasure for anyone who needs to get quickly up-to-speed on the PeopleSoft HRMS data architecture and the most common tables against which queries and reports are executed. This alone would make the book invaluable because of the confusing PeopleSoft documentation and the thousands of tables. However, the author goes well beyond by breaking down the most important tables, grouped by function, into attributes and explaining how to create highly useful business reports from them.

In addition to the thorough coverage of the data architecture, the book also provides an excellent compendium of information and tips for using SQR to its fullest potential. Although my main interest is in the tables, I considered material on SQR to be a bonus and learned a great deal from this section.

If you are working with PeopleSoft on either the technical or functional side this book will probably be your most used reference. The author deserves the highest accolades for clear writing, technical knowledge and the ability to distill the essentials into one of the best references and tutorials I've read in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book.......2002-02-18

I have been working with Peoplesoft product since last five years,I have seen may books in the market but this is the only book I have seen which has very usefull information which helps the begenners a lot to understand main tables and also gives overview of HRMS functionality.

I strongly recommend this book for Begenners and is useful as a reference book for any one.

                          Second Edition <
The Greeks of the classical age invented not only the central idea of Western politics--that the power of state should be guided by a majority of its citizens--but also the central act of Western warfare, the decisive infantry battle. Instead of ambush, skirmish, maneuver, or combat between individual heroes, the Greeks of the fifth century b.c. devised a ferocious, brief, and destructive head-on clash between armed men of all ages. In this bold, original study, Victor Davis Hanson shows how this brutal enterprise was dedicated to the same outcome as consensual government--an unequivocal, instant resolution to dispute.

The Western Way of War draws from an extraordinary range of sources--Greek poetry, drama, and vase painting, as well as historical records--to describe what actually took place on the battlefield. It is the first study to explore the actual mechanics of classical Greek battle from the vantage point of the infantryman--the brutal spear-thrusting, the difficulty of fighting in heavy bronze armor which made it hard to see, hear and move, and the fear. Hanson also discusses the physical condition and age of the men, weaponry, wounds, and morale.

This compelling account of what happened on the killing fields of the ancient Greeks ultimately shows that their style of armament and battle was contrived to minimize time and life lost by making the battle experience as decisive and appalling as possible. Linking this new style of fighting to the rise of constitutional government, Hanson raises new issues and questions old assumptions about the history of war.

This study of Greek hoplite warfare explains the infantry practices of the remote past with great clarity and should interest anyone who enjoys studying warfare or history.

5 out of 5 stars Battle as you've never experienced it before.......2007-01-10

By utilizing primary sources from first hand witnesses of ancient battle, Hanson paints a brilliant picture of what war in classical Greece was actually like. This book is a must-read for anyone fascinated by military history.

3 out of 5 stars Good Grand, if Overplayed Review of Classical Greek Battle.......2006-11-27

Good 'ol Victor Davis Hanson is on the loose again. This time -- thankfully -- in his old stomping grounds of Ancient Greece. Again VDH has the truth serum of classical combat in strong measure. Make no doubt about it, Hanson knows what ancient combat was about -- let there be no other interpretations of this period: This is both the strength and the weakness of his book in my humble opinion: Hanson is making inferences about broad sweeps of history in a way a person would describe the chemical reaction of boric acid in water -- all very mathematical, and not allowing for the possibility of error, or little other interpretation.

Hanson starts where it all began, and where it all should begin -- with the grand master of the Iliad and Homer. Classical battle is defined and the classic stages of warfare, down to Hellenic Warfare are demonstrated. He even goes in detail enough during the dark ages between 1200 and 800 BC and asserts certain economic theories about the time to explain the nature of the civilisation. It is at times like these, when grand edifices are constructed on Hanson's private preferences that one gets the idea that something may be amiss. We know almost nothing about the economic time of the Greek Dark Ages -- I am little more than uneasy about how easily he asserts the truth of this age.

Make no mistake, this is not a politcal track such as "Carnage & Culture" or some of his other literature that have made him a doyen of the illogical political right in the US, this is serious scholarship. But it is certainly a lot different from the model of scholarship I was taught to worship and emulate -- one where a broad understanding of other ideas and competing theories and, and small measure of humility, yeild a wonderful read and superior wisdom. One could cite G.F. Cantor or M.I. Findley as good examples of the latter.

But Hanson has his truth and it will reign. So be it.

I learned a lot from his prose and his ability to find the locus of tactical change within the ancient Greek way of warfare make this a good read with the lot of worthy scholarship. He is particularly good on his shift from classic Greek warfare -- short depth in ranks, short stabbing spears and the panoply -- to the changes that lead to an almost baroque assembly or multiple serried ranks of 20 plus and unwieledy spears. The push of the pike was never more important, but the Greeks somehow lost the ability to engage locate and move against the evolving Roman tactics.

I do not think this book is as good as Lendon ("Ghosts and Soldiers") in its experimental thesis, but it is still a very good introductory read on the subject. Although I am highly critical of Hansen, he should thank me for his royalty cheques, since I do own most of his works, warts and all.

                          4 out of 5 stars A crucial book.......2006-11-10

This book is a crucial source to understand the way in which Greeks engage in War. As a person interested in strategy and military history, I realize that this book complements my knowledge of the classical greek period.

                          3 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2006-10-06

Both Mr. Keegan and Mr. Hanson are accomplished authors with a gift for communicating their ideas. I have been a fan of Mr. Keegan's books for many years but not quite so fond of Mr. Hanson's theories. This theory on the superiority of western warfare and its roots, though perhaps an interesting theory to explore, is a great disappointment to me. It is indeed an important work that should be considered by the serious student but be sure to read some of the opposition and I think the problems with these theories will become quite evident. I would have expected different conclusions from others of Mr. Keegan's books but his great accomplishments in the field of military history force us to consider what he has to say and challenges us to study further.

The University of Chicago Readings in Western Civilization (nine volumes) makes available to students and teachers a unique selection of primary documents, many in new translations. These readings, prepared for the highly praised Western civilization sequence at the University of Chicago, were chosen by an outstanding group of scholars whose experience teaching that course spans almost four decades. Each volume includes rarely anthologized selections as well as standard, more familiar texts; a bibliography of recommended parallel readings; and introductions providing background for the selections. Beginning with Periclean Athens and concluding with twentieth-century Europe, these source materials enable teachers and students to explore a variety of critical approaches to important events and themes in Western history.

Individual volumes provide essential background reading for courses covering specific eras and periods. The complete nine-volume series is ideal for general courses in history and Western civilization sequences.

Even the most math-phobic among us will be lulled into appreciation by Weaver's creative and disarming discussions of this supposedly formidable intellectual discipline. He covers all the basics: irrational and imaginary numbers, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, differential and integral calculus, the concepts of zero and infinity, vectors, set theory, chance and probability, and much more.

Weaver concludes with five fascinating historical profiles, reviewing the life and work of Copernicus, Descartes, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton. More than anyone else, these five geniuses were responsible for creating the mathematical foundations of the physical sciences, which continue to make possible extraordinary discoveries and technological achievements.

This enjoyable volume gives readers a working knowledge of math's most important concepts, an appreciation of its elegant logical structure, and an understanding of its historical significance in creating our contemporary world.

                                    Book Description

This important new book highlights the conflicts between economic growth and the conservation of nature in the context of sustainable development. It places particular emphasis on biological diversity and examines possible policies for resolving conflicts which arise from the contrasting goals of conserving the natural environment and economic growth. The book opens with an overview of the challenges of economics, nature conservation and sustainable development and goes on to discuss general principles and broad policies. Case studies from China and north-east India help illustrate important economic and social principles involved in nature conservation. General issues examined include: the value of environmental and resource economics in planning sustainable development the importance of biodiversity conservation for sustainable development and for the stability and sustainability of ecological systems the impact of economic globalization and market systems on the conservation of nature priorities for the financial support of protected areas the extent to which ecotourism can be harnessed to reconcile economic utilization of an area with nature conservation the costs and benefits of conservation financing the management of nature reserves This book will be essential reading for economists interested in the environment, ecology and development.
