Econometrics defanged.......2005-11-09

This text is neither exhaustive nor rigorous. It comes in at just 400 pages, thinner than Johnston, Kmenta, Maddala or Greene. It serves a very different constituency than do those texts.

I occasionally teach an econometrics class for business and liberal arts majors, students who aren't required to take econometrics and who usually don't have more than a very basic background in statistics, math, and economics. Exhaustive texts that prove all the fundamental theorems don't serve the needs of that audience, which instead wants to know how to do some basic regressions, test some simple hypotheses, and understand what econometricians and statisticians are up to when they present their results to managers, marketers, and other business professionals. This book serves that audience nicely.

This text is simply written. The mathematical window dressing is kept to a minimum. It's more than a cookbook, but it isn't at all rigorous. Basic violations of the linear regression model are explained, basic tests and fixes presented. Some special topics are presented late in the book, but not so many that most can't be touched on in a one-semester course. The problems at the end of each chapter illustrate the principles taught in the chapter, and they're of reasonable difficulty (not the sort of thing that had me pulling my hair out when I first took econometrics out of Kmenta).

I'm not enthusiastic about the computer exercises, but they're okay. Students complained that they couldn't open one of the required data files for a couple of problems, and when I imperiously said, "here, let me show you," I found I couldn't open it either. Storing the data in Excel workbooks was a little more cumbersom than it should have been, but it worked well enough. It would be nice if answers to some problems were provided at the back of the book, though I'm of two minds on that. Ask me tomorrow and I'll say that it's better not to include answers.

Econometrics isn't a simple subject, but this book makes it approachable for any diligent student with some basic economic and statistical background. Despite the occasional stray integral in the text, knowledge of calculus is not required. This isn't the text I'd choose for economics majors or for students at a highly competitive business school, but it serves a niche audience that deserves to be served, and it does it in a no-nonsense way. I think one can learn some solid, basic econometrics from this text.

If you're looking for limericks, don't buy this book. It is a collection of clever little poems and ditties... all definately clean, but they are not limericks by any stretch of the imagination. Just not much for your money... Take 15 minutes and read someone else's copy!

Beneficial book, but don't make it your first or only one........2006-12-24

This book is chock-full of good information, and the accompanying CD is definitely an added bonus. Ultimately, it deserves a spot on the shelf of any arranging student. However, some of the material is dryly presented in the form of tables which the student is advised to refer to, instead of being explained as a concept from which the student can base his/her own decisions (ex. the chapters on voicings in fourths, clusters, and plural chord relationships). Also, I would not advise this book for those interested in arranging for strings...this book focuses solely on saxes, brass, woodwinds, percussion and the rhythm section.

On the plus side, the book gives a solid chapter on "Working Procedures for Writing an Arrangement", and its discussion of harmony and orchestral color in terms of "density levels", "octave span" and "weight" is refreshing, easy to understand, and unique.

This book will definitely augment (pun intended) your arranging knowledge, but if you're just starting, I'd highly recommend "Modern Jazz Voicings" by Ted Pease and Ken Pullig, "Arranging for Large Jazz Ensemble" by Ken Pullig, and/or a good jazz theory book as a starting point...the denser parts of this book will make more sense after that.

A very detailed mathematical aproach to band arranging. Useful tables to cover all practical situations, mostly from the point of view of horn section arranging. Somewhat light on in terms of rhythm section arranging. This book doesn't aim to teach you WHAT to write, but if you already have some experience in band arranging and are familiar with extended chords and basic harmonic and melodic concepts, it will help to guide you through the labyrinth of endless musical possibilities. Band arranging from a jazz (thus also blues/rock/pop/show music etc) perspective, not so much concert band or wind orchestra.

I had the feeling there must be some suplimentary material I was missing while trying to read this book. Alot of ideas that had no explanation. Basically I gave up trying make use of this book.
It has some of the usual stuff included in books on this subject, like instrument ranges. For me, there were just too many ideas without a clue as to HOW to do it. You might as well say "try to make good sounding songs" "try to keep your melodies interesting" "use discipline, and good judgment in your arrangment". If you are a fan of this style of advice and teaching, then you will love this book.

This is just a fun trivia book for fans of ALL MY CHILDREN. It has a lot of facts, some you might know, some you might not. A lot of quizzes, even one for the famous Erica Kane! While its not as comprehensive as the 1994 ALL MY CHILDREN coffee table book, it still has loads of facts and fun for trivia and AMC fans alike. It's pretty cheap too so its worth it if you want to know more about AMC or just enjoy trivia books.

This book is great. It is filled with so much information which the dedicated fan should know. It also has some great pictures. However, it is paperback and not hardcover like they say.

This is an excellent book for ALL of us AMC fans: I'm pretty much a novice and it really gave me a good background and tidbits. It helped me learn the history and about characters who were gone before I started watching. It really helped put pieces of the puzzle together. My sister is a veteran and she was kept going "I remember that!" or "No way! Even I didn't know that!!!" And, it has great pictures. I recommend it for those of you who starting watching in the 1970's, and for AMC fans who were born in the 1970's.

I've read a lot of technical books across a number of computer-related topics, and usually I find something useful. Unfortunately I agree with some of the other reviewers that the book was repetitious and too superficial to be of much use. The writing style was very dry and unengaging. The checklists are a nice idea, but not executed very well. I'd look further for a good primer on this subject.....

A comprehensive portal approach.......2002-07-29

Corporate Portals is a great reference book. I have a solid picture of what I want the portal to accomplish to create a lower cost of ownership of technology as we plan and budget for the future. I highly recommend you purchase this book and map your portal to fit your business and process strategy. Thank you, Heidi!! I feel like I have a much better understanding of what to ask when looking at portal solutions. If you are focused on search and taxonomy features as a first step into portals,the questions Heidi provides will enable you to drill into what each vendor's search and taxonomy offerings are and how they implement them. There are a lot of differences and you will not been able to make the right choices early in the process without Corporate Portals. If you need a portal, this is a great place to learn and get started.

Separating Reality from the Hype..........2002-06-27

I have found this book to be extremely helpful to me in my independent consulting practice. Understanding what to think about, focus on, and pull together in order to discuss corporate portals with my clients was more than worth the price. I learned much about what to truly expect from the myriad vendor products available; this enabled me to effectively evaluate the products and architecture differences in enterprise portal software solutions. If you want to know the right questions and specific issues to concentrate on when looking for a corporate portal -- this book will be very valuable to you.

For anyone contemplating whether or not to move forward on a project involving the deployment of an enterprise portal, this book is a must read. Heidi Collins does an excellent job explaining the structure of an enterprise portal project including a very valuable checklist at the end of the book which is extremely helpful for those who are in the early stages of portal architecture design.

I bought this book along with the book "30 days to the ASVAB" and it was a tremendous help. I have been trying to get into offcier candidate school (OCS) for sometime now. In oreder to get into OCS you need a GT score of 110. I studied from another book then took a practice test to see how well I would do and ended up getting an 84! I then decided to buy this book. I found that this book cover everything you need to know about the exam in great detail. The exams in this book are much harder then what you will actually find on the real exam but if you can master the questions in this book you will master the ASVAB. Don't waste your time on silly online programs offering "Secrets to Passing the ASVAB" just study this book (along with the other book) for about a month and you will do just find on the ASVAB. I actually found questions in this book to be on the real ASVAB! Tha was a suprising bonus to studying with this book. Needless to say, I ended up scoring a GT score of 120! And an AFQT score of 88! With these two scores I will be able to go to OCS and pick almost any military work field I would like to work in! Don't sleep on buying this book and preparing for the ASVAB. I recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with the ASVAB in the past or who just need a refresher on math and english...you will NOT regret it!

This is an excellent book for learning the specifics required to pass and do well on the ASVAB. If you can pass or excel on the practice tests in this book, you will do even better on the real test.

I can't believe I'm the first person to review this book?! I think any social entrepreneur/activist would benefit from this summary of how our surroundings, and even our bodies, are being commiditized. The most disturbing statistic in the book for me was how there are more people in slavery today than at any other time in human history?! I think a book like this compliments 'The World is Flat' very well. There is a dark underbelly to globalization that can be remedied by socially conscious captilism. (...)
