Panel Data Econometrics (Advanced Texts in Econometrics)
ASIN: 0124406564 |
Book Description
Applied econometric research is concerned with the measurement of the parameters of economic relationships and with the prediction (by means of these parameters) of the values of economic variables
Dependent variable is the value of a function that is determined by the function and the value(s) chosen for its independent variable(s). The generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation has emerged over the last decade as providing a ready to use, flexible tool of application to a large number of econometric and economic models by relying on mild, plausible assumptions. Panel, or longitudinal, data, are data on constant experimental units over a period of time. Nonparametric methods are any of various inferential procedures whose conclusions do not rely on assumptions about the distribution of the population of interest.
This book uses a GMM approach to make its presentation of panel data methods for weak model assumptions ("semiparametric"). These assumptions are useful because they can offer general approaches and explain real problems. So while the subjects covered by this book are narrower than those appearing in a comprehensive book on panel data, the utility of the material (that is, the book's ability to make accessible practical computation and implementation methods) is higher.
An economic system typically consists of many interdependent variables and the relationships among them. In estimating the equations of such systems, econometricians frequently encounter an obstacle known as "the identification problem." The latter is most easily illustrated by reference to the process of determination of price and output in a market. To model this process the econometrician must develop a quantitative estimate of both the demand and supply functions. Typically the data used to estimate these functions are past observations of price and output determined by the points of intersection between the demand and supply curves. If, in the past, the supply curve has been shifting (due, say, to production cost changes) while the demand curve has remained fixed, the resultant intersection points trace out the demand function. If the demand curve has shifted (due, say, to income changes) while the supply curve has remained fixed, the intersection points trace out the supply curve. The most likely outcome is movement of both curves yielding a pattern of price, quantity intersection points from which the econometrician will be unable, without further information, to distinguish the demand curve from the supply curve or estimate the parameters of either. This is the identification problem.

Book Description
This important collection brings together leading econometricians to discuss recent advances in the areas of the econometrics of panel data, limited dependent variable models and limited dependent variable models with panel data. The contributors focus on the issues of simplifying complex real world phenomena into easily generalizable inferences from individual outcomes. As the contributions of G. S. Maddala in the fields of limited dependent variables and panel data have been particularly influential, it is a fitting tribute that this volume is dedicated to him.

This important collection brings together leading econometricians to discuss recent advances in the areas of the econometrics of panel data. The papers in this collection can be grouped into two categories. The first, which includes chapters by Amemiya, Baltagi, Arellano, Bover, and Labeaga primarily deal with different aspects of limited dependent variables and sample selectivity. The second group of papers, including those by Nerlove, Schmidt and Ahn, Kiviet, Davies and Lahiri, consider issues that arise in the estimation of dyanamic (possibly) heterogeneous panel data models. Overall, the contributors focus on the issues of simplifying complex real world phenomena into easily generalizable inferences from individual outcomes. As the contributions of G. S. Maddala in the fields of limited dependent variables and panel data were particularly influential, it is a fitting tribute that this volume is dedicated to him.

From the supplier: Free trade is threatened more by the transnationalization of industry and production than it is by increasing trade barriers. Domestic policies designed to promote industry and trade have been complicated by by the separation of ownership and production location. Government policies that previously promoted free trade while simultaneously protecting national industries have become ineffective in a world where multinational corporations transcend national boundaries. Falling production and rising unemployment combined with the increasingly complicated trade environment are a greater threat to free trade than traditional trade barriers.

Product Description
Commonly referred to as the "rhythm guitarist's bible," this innovative book is a system of guitar chord formation which maximizes power voicing while minimizing left-hand movement! Originally written by Mel Bay in 1947, this landmark publication was reissued in its original typesetting in 1973 to become the definitive text on jazz chords in private teaching studios and university jazz guitar departments around the globe. Mr. Bay's practical, analytical approach to the fingerboard produced this comprehensive system for learning full-sounding orchestral jazz guitar chords.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Chord Book.......2007-01-16
I have been playing guitar for almost 35 years and I have been teaching privatly for last 20 years. Rhythm and Chord book by Mel Bay is an excellent book in learning chords in all positions on the fretboard. I highly recommend this book, this is one of the supplemental books I use in teaching.
A must have for all rock & jazz guitarists.......2006-08-18
This may well be the single best guitar instruction book ever written! Every rock & jazz guitarist should own this book. You will learn to play all the chords most guitarists will likely need to know within 3 frets of any position. I have owned this book since 1976 & play through it every year or so as a refresher course & enjoy doing so. Novice players should have a teacher take them thru this book, more experienced guitarists will have no problem studying it on their own. Highest recommendation!

Book Description
Are we more than the collection of our memories? Does our behavior reflect more than reaction to accumulated experience? Or, can our actions be treated as the simple functioning of a neural-state device? Questions such as these continue to puzzle philosophers and scientists. And although the answers continue to elude inquiry, alternative approaches are available.

This book will break news and dramatically challenge assumptions about what the American military can achieve with high-tech weaponry--even more that it did in Iraq--and what must be done-- more than people think--if the War on Terror is to be won.

Food for thought from the expert's table........2006-10-15
Numerous books analyze the history and strategies of terrorism in the world - but too few tell how to win the war on terror. Here, under one cover, is an exit strategy for Iraq and a global blueprint of political and economic changes, as well as military tips, on how to win the war, coming from two military pros who lend their expertise to ENDGAME; THE BLUEPRINT FOR VICTORY IN THE WAR ON TERROR. Food for thought from the expert's table.

Great truths found in this book rarely found in other books even partially about Saddam Hussein.......2006-09-06
Like the part about also terrorist Gaddafi (Khadafi) of Libya quitting his nuclear bomb building project when he saw Saddam Hussein fall to US forces in 2003 and Gaddafi feared he (Gaddafi) may have have been taken down next. Book was revised in 2006
Presents Awesome Pros and Cons on WOT- Support the Troops--Win the War.......2006-07-11
In examining the perspectives of these two news commentators and retired Generals, Endgame proves detailed, easy to read analysis for the Average American in understanding the War On Terror (WOT). This is essential reading if you'd like a primer on the Iraq and Afghanistan. It's a high level overview of the military politics associated with how the war has been conducted and executed by the top brass. It provides detailed commentary on what they did right and what they did wrong. It also provides very constructive criticism on how the United States can improve its tactics in the war on terror.
While some folks have touted this book as Hawkish and neo-con oriented, its not necessarily fair to extrapolate the politics of a war where we are already committed 3+ years to winning and have been very successful. Critics of the war continue to drag out old news even as al-Zarcowi has been caught with careful, detailed and persistent efforts by the co-alition of the willing. These two retired Generals tell a great tale and paint Americas military in a positive light.
It's a short read. It also talks about why Americans fight and to what end they bring their values to the battlefield against an enemy that really hates the West. Read this book!
A poltics free military assessment of what we face in the War on Terror.......2006-07-05
If you want to read a confident and politics free military assessment of what the War on Terror is actually about, what we are facing, and what we should do now before it just gets to be a worse and bigger problem, then this is a good book for you to read. The authors are military men who understand the region, its history, or work there, and have sound views of what is coming (and what is coming isn't going to go away by talking with eyes closed and fingers crossed).
The authors see the problem in terms of eight countries and our dealing with them in a unified way rather than one at a time. Some are bigger problems than others, and the authors are clear about what should be done with each regime in each of the countries. Obviously, reality is never as simple as any plan, but in viewing them together it helps the reader make sense of the apparent confusion we are facing now.
They also dismantle some of the notions about having massive force, or that Iraq distracted from Afghanistan, or that terror should be treated as a police action, and so forth. The last part deals with how we should be working on a nuclear Iran. It is all quite interesting even without believing that these two authors have solved the puzzle for everyone. However, their writing is much clearer and sounds more credible than anything I have read in the papers or heard on TV.
The appendix shows photos of the authors meeting with key folks and touring the region in question. A well chosen reading list is also provided for further study.
Recommended.
Complete Garbage.......2006-06-29
Little more than propoganda, the book is slanderous and so frequently speaks without evidence that it is without any use. If you're a true believer and want somebody to tell you what you already think, then enjoy. I couldn't get much past the second chapter, when the book rambeled on with baseless accusations and an assortment of silly baseless suggestions. Complete and utter garbage.
Book Description
The Fate of Nations identifies and illustrates the basic varieties of security policy, as well as re-interpreting six well-documented historical episodes: Great Britain and the nineteenth century balance of power system; France between the two world wars; The United States during the Cold War; China from the Communist victory in 1949 to 1976; Israel from the founding of the state in 1948 to the peace treaty with Egypt in 1979; Japan and the international economic order after 1945. Professor Mandelbaum shows that, while no state is wholly restricted by its position in the international system, neither is any entirely free from external constraints. He concludes that in this century, national security policies have been more prudent, even when unsuccessful, than they often retrospectively have been judged.

Biographies for H.S. students........2001-05-02
The authors provide short biographies of scientists from the United States in the twentieth century. Each biography is a few pages. Some of these were a bit dry while others were very inspirational. This could be a good book for H.S. students interested in science.
