Finally a clear theory book.......2006-04-28

This is a perfect textbook for college students in their first two years. Part of the beauty of the book is that instructors have a great deal of flexibility in how to organize their beginning music theory classes. One can add more composition projects or less depending on the class. In my opinion, which differs from the first reviewer, music theory is intrinsically not a subject for people to study independently. Music is too complicated with too many chances for misunderstanding. Most people know that they need an instructor to study piano. Why would theory be different? The examples provided in the book are clear, very clear, and can easily be expanded with more complex musical examples and assignments.

This textbook adds other musical textures apart from the often mistaught four part chorale textures with the parallel fifth and octave rules. No one in Bach's day (Bach is the model for this afterall) ever wrote chorales as vertical chord structures despite Walter Piston's strange misportrayal of this texture. Four part chorales are countrapuntal and that's how they're written.

We now have generations of music students teaching who continue this myth to the detriment of their students who pass the nonsense along when they start teaching. Benjamin, Horvit, and Nelson along with Leo Kraft and his excellent books have helped correct this.

This textbook is understandable, putting it far ahead of most of the others. I read Ottman and Piston and they are certainly pedantic and confusing. Both wax on with such lofty nonsense in their efforts to explain some of the most simple things. Why not just be clear?

The students finally have a chance to understand the real stuff with Benjamin, Horvit, and Nelson. I urge you to get a desk copy and decide for yourself.

Bad theory textbook.......2004-04-19

This book was used for my Harmony I and II class at Fullerton Community College which was the second and third course in music theory for music majors. I find this book to be very poorly written. IT does not go into to much detail in explaining concepts. The chapter in the book are very short although the reference back section is handy. It is written in a skeletal outline format and does a terrible job at defining new terms. The book is also worthless for self study. Students need the guidance of a professor or music pro to help them learn from the book unless the student is very bright. Most of the examples are written for keyboard which could be burdensome for non keyboard playing people even though I play the keyboard. Also the examples in the book are not good enough and not all of the examples are in four part choral style which is learnt in most college thoery classes.

Best Basic Music theory Text.......2003-08-09

After years of buying and perusing basic music theory texts, I was discouraged with the main ones for their denseness and tedious nature, such as Piston and Hindemith. For the amatuer wanting a well-designed guide to develop an understanding of how classical music works, this is by far the best. The steps are clear and logical, the exercises just what the learner needs, and the accompanying book of music examples a highly advisable purchase. You could do this on your own without a guide, given the fact that the materials have been tested in the classroom. The bibliography is also useful, if for nothing else than to show you why this vademecum is the most user-friendly and helpful.

The Secret Success of a Squatting Movement to House the Homeless

Benjamin volunteered to open the vacant building on Shotwell and 22nd, and said I could follow. He had squatted it before the landlord kicked him out, but now lived in a sleazy downtown hotel. We walked up to the alley door, and just as Benjamin produced his crowbar, a very large guy (much smaller than Benjamin and much bigger than me) walked up to his own door just a few feet away. Benjamin thought quick and pretended legitimacy by knocking. "Whatcha knockin for?" the neighbor asked. His eyes narrowed. "Nobody lives there."

Benjamin has broken into hundreds of buildings with Homes Not Jails and knew when to lead a tactical retreat. But undaunted, he circled the building and easily lifted his seven-foot frame over a fence and into the backyard. From my cowardly vantage I could see a weak flashlight flickering at us from a window in the second story of the next-door flat. Was it the neighbor who confronted us? Did he have a gun? Again, Benjamin either failed to notice the flashlight-wielding neighbor or cared little. He climbed the back stairs, jimmied the door, walked out the alley and returned with two homeless people who needed a place to stay. After letting the two into the squat, Benjamin promised to help change the lock if they stayed for a week. Afterwards I skipped to keep pace as, with a crowbar dangling from his pinkie, Benjamin lumbered about the neighborhood in search of more squats.

Poor graphics, imcomplete info........2003-06-06

Many shots in this book lack interesting features and are there just to fill space. Also many images are blury and it does not even tell anything about the movie soundtrack, which I know inclues excellent songs by Apollo440 and a joint venture by Juno Reactor and The Creatures.

Danger, Will Robinson!.......2001-12-01

I was impressed by the motion picture remake of the old "Lost in Space" TV series: the sets, costumes, effects, and other elements were obviously conceived and designed with great care and professionalism. "The Making of Lost in Space," by Pat Cadigan, is a documentary look at the making of the motion picture.

Cadigan discusses the process of transforming the elements of the familiar 60s TV series into a film. The book contains many fascinating concept drawings of the visual elements that eventually were used. Many "behind-the-scenes" artists and technicians get some well-deserved recognition.

I don't know what the future holds for this sci-fi franchise. But this book is a treat for "Lost in Space" fans anyway.

A very informative reference book for those interested in the history of the Cold War era and the follow-on efforts that remain in effect.

This book, along with Rings of Supersonic Steel co-authored by Mark Berhow and Mark Morgan, can answer many questions for not only historians, but also for those who might have lived near some of these Cold War facilities without understanding what was there, nor why they were there.

This book is amazing.Im glad i own it as it has so much history about cold war missiles and then some.Very imformative book if your looking to learn about american missile systems from way back in the 1950's through the present.

Great historical novel.......1999-04-05

Juan de la Rosa takes us to the 19th century in Latin America (Bolivia) and shows us how a people fought for its freedom. The novel mixes real facts with fiction; through its rich landscape and character descriptions, it transports us in time and space. We become sympathetic to little orphan Juan's suffering while growing up with unfriendly people, and his struggle to escape from opression. Through Juan's struggles we also see a whole people's fight for independence. There is a paralell maturing of Juan with the Bolivian independence movement. A high point in the novel is the battle between women and children on one side, armed with sticks and led by a blind woman, and the well-armed and cruel Spanish army on the other side. The novel is very effective in depicting the major players and crucial events in the independence movement. The development of Juan's particular story against the backdrop of the independence movement is really moving. While we become engaged in the historical developments we never lose sight of the personal struggles of the main character, including his search to find out his own identity. Higly recommended reading.

Great Book for Students.......2005-11-21

Reading this book was a great advantage for me being a student. The amount of research that was put in was astonishing. The book provided many figures and showed a great deal of understanding of how our streams and rivers work. The work by Anatoliy I. Fisenko is a great investment for high school and university students. Although they are not able to make these proposals come true at this time, I am more than certain that in the future if they intend to go into environmental sciences the ideas outlined in this reading could definitely be a big adavantage for them and for their work. This book for me came in handy even in high school for a biology research paper, and after reading it I would strongly recommend for universities and schools to have this book on their library book shelves. Overall I would recommend this book to everyone because it is a very informative and interesting read. In the near future i would like to see these cleanup procedures being done on all our streams and rivers as well as larger water bodies, because we depend on water for survival so we should help and get it to the best standard possible. I believe that the proposal outlined in this book is practical and should be brought to action.

Regarding The Future for Our Small Streams and Rivers, Protea Publishing, Atlanta 2004.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Recently I have examined the new environmental book listed above. It seems to me a very worthwhile study showing that one's knowledge of a natural process can give us insight into which human interventions are the most desirable.

In this case, the author's survey of the natural purification of a creek, supplemented by extensive literature about other places, reveals the fundamental role of the natural purification process. On our part, we can hasten the concentration of pollutants in the foam for subsequent removal. Thus, we will not only improve the water quality, but also restrict the flow of pollution into a larger drainage system such as the Great Lakes.

As an engineer, I am interested in the description of the equipment named collectors to be used in a stream. As the authors themselves state, other procedures must later be utilized to remove the pollutants from the water surface.

I am recommending this book as a very useful instance of popular science with certain innovative ideas.

Waters for Health.......2004-09-01

I am advising the managements of our bookstores and libraries to stock this small but weighty volume.It is perhaps unique in combining succinctly so many aspects: science theory, visual observations, precise laboiratory analysis, and a practical policy proposal.
Personally, as a physician, I have always approached the issue of environmental pollution from the viewpoint of health. Why should our children risk their well-being while seeking wholesome recreation in otherwise safe streams? Yes, the authors were absolutely right in raising the alarm when a serious toxic spill occurred.By their own example, they showed the usefulness of frequent monitoring of the recreational waters. Their analyses were a steppingstone to action. In my opinion, a clean-up of the sort that the authors propose, that is regular though incomplete, is better than a once-a-year crisis intervention.

Book Review (The future for our...).......2004-08-22

I strongly recommend The Future for Our Small Streams and Rivers to all the readers. What a fascinating book!

Frankly, when I picked up this work, I was initially attracted by its colorful cover pages, but did not expect to find so much exciting reading as I soon discovered. The vital point is the development of the scientific findings in a very readable and easy to understand way. With the help of the glossary at the back, I had no trouble following the ingeniously presented facts describing the natural self-purification of rivers. For example, to read Chapter 2 with its many illustrations is like following a story in a film.

While entertaining myself, I believe that also learnt a great deal of ecology. This book would be a useful supplement to the regular curricular materials in environmental science courses.

Finally,I hope you will stock this inexpensive but wonderful book on your shelves.
