I just finished "Chicken Soup for the Volunteer Soul," which is an excellent and inspirational book. Also, a few weeks ago, I went on a Social and Service Justice Retreat. Since reading this book, making the retreat, and other inevitable signs, I feel inspired to find a place to volunteer.

I was impressed by the work's intent, format, and content. Marginally Helpful, but Disappointing.......2005-01-30

This book is an OK resource, but I have to agree with a previous reviewer that has some mistakes and is sometimes as flawed as the tabs available on the Internet. Additionally, the book doesn't even follow its own drum legend (the notation is inconsistent throughout the book).

If you go strictly by the presented legend in the beginning of the book, then John Bohnham never plays his bass drum in "Good Times, Bad Times". Instead, he uses his floor tom. I guess he would cross over his body with his left hand while playing 8ths on the hi-hat with his right hand or ride on the hat with his left and play the tom with his right? - probably not.

In "Stairway to Heaven" the same problem arises with the bass drum notation using the tom line as specified in the legend, except there are notes for the bass drum as specified in the legend. OK, so John Bonham played 4-on-the-floor in his tom with occasional bass drum accents on the upbeats? This is a professional transcription?

This book is a sloppy presentation of Bonham's playing. Of course, a person can decipher what's going on in the book, but I think if I have to do that much deciphering, I should do it from the recording, not from a marginally correct paper representation of someone's playing. With that said, I will rely on my own transcriptions and ear rather than this book. There is no other way.

I think this book is inexpensive, especially if you pick it up used, so it's not a bad thing to have. The best way I can come up with using it myself is after I've transcribed something and before I go to the kit to play it. I'll just check with the book in case it might have something in it that I can correct or something glaring that I missed. However, I'd use the recording as a final word when the book and a personal transcription don't match because I can't trust the book to be correct.

Using a transcription tool like the program Transcribe (www.seventhstring.com - runs on Mac, Linux, and PC) to slow down and repeat pieces of music, I think a person can come up with more useful transcriptions of Bonham's music than this book offers.

Buy it if you want to, but don't pay full price and don't take it too seriously.

I really liked it just in stairway to heaven there is 1 wrong note and in the other songs there's probrably some wrong notes lurking around there but otherwise this book is great!

Good Capture of Led Zeppelin Drums with some flaws.......2003-06-02

I am a great fan of John Bonham and Led Zeppelin. I always wanted to see how to play the songs besides looking at flawed tabs. If you are a drummer and are a fan of Led Zeppelin or John Bonham then you should buy this book. The only problem is that you might have a hard time following some of the songs because they do not explain any of the techniques. This gets a little frustrating when you are trying to play it. But other then that its a great book. I hope they come out with another one of other songs because I was disappointed to see that there werent some really good songs in there.

This is not a dry, academic book. It's a "punchy" academic book that forthrightly addresses society's preoccupation with celebrities and celebrity culture by exploring the sociological and psychological motivations for this preoccupation. The book covers historic material, as well as new research on the psychology of fans. The book also contains some eye-opening factoids that illustrate just how overboard society gets with its adoration and interest. A basic background in psychology and statistics is really needed to fully appreciate the contents, however. Over all, it is highly recommended!

Excellent Text Not For The Casual Reader.......2007-04-29

This book is a serious educational tool for modern fighter pilots. I tried reading it in high school when I thought I wanted to "grow up to be a fighter pilot." The best thing about it is that I learned that being a fighter pilot requires a lot more knowledge of math and physics than I'd ever imagined. Real fighter jocks have to be a great deal smarter than they are portrayed in movies.

The subject matter is fascinating, and the book is clear and well-written. If you read it carefully, you will certainly learn something, but unless you are also sitting in a cockpit day after day, you won't have any context for the information you've put in your head.

I suppose a die-hard combat flight sim pilot might be able to improve his or her air combat skills with this book, but, honestly, for a civilian, the only reason to read this book is because you are so obsessed with air combat that you simply must immerse yourself in this subject matter. I doubt someone who has never flown into real air-to-air combat will ever have a true appreciation of the knowledge this book has to offer.

If you are serious about Combat Flight sims..........2007-02-11

... then this book is a must-have. However if you are a pretty casual flight simmer and just are out for fun, this will just complicate your approach unnecessarily.

I got it with the intention of getting more serious, but unless you are a young person with ambitions of joining the air force, you may be better off just getting what info there is on line already.

This book covers all aspects of ACM, and it is excellent for that. Just that after having read the book, I found I lacked the time to PRACTICE the maneuvers covered therein. And practice is the only way you will be able to translate what's in the book into anything more real. If you have an interest in combat flight, you may enjoy the book anyway, on another level.

All in all I'd have to say that it was a good addition to my library- now just trying to get the time to implement it in my fav sim.

Fighter Combat by Shaw is the definitive book on air combat in any decade.

Like so many others have said, Shaw's book is utterly comprehensive, covering everything from the most basic of basics, to advanced maneuvering tactics for fighting when faced with superior odds and superior aircraft. I originally purchased Fighter Combat as an aid to my knowledge in combat flight simulators, but I quickly found that even small portions of Shaw's book contained a level of knowledge that absolutely dwarfed my own.

Highly, highly recommended. If you're a flight-sim enthusiast, a jet fighter enthusiast or the like, there is no more authoritative work.

A fighter pilot's textbook.......2006-11-27

Although no previous knowledge is assumed, this textbook on fighter tactics is strictly no-nonsense and requires committed study. Diagrams show the movement of aircraft by tracing the path of their wingtips, then have marked discussion points, as is evident by this pretty typical excerpt:

"The direction chosen by the defender to stop his roll at time '3' is calculated so that the inverted, wings-level pull-down will place him at point '4', the peak of the maneuver, with his nose aimed at a point almost directly above the bogey's predicted position at that time..."

Fascinating Book.......2006-11-19

For anyone interested in the history of travel or of the early contacts between Europeans and indigenous peoples, this is a wonderfully stimulating book. Liebersohn brings together a deep knowledge of European intellectual history and a very perceptive reading of travel accounts written by some of the lesser-known early voyagers to Tahiti, Hawaii, and other Pacific islands. The real success of the book, in my view, is how he situates these accounts within networks of patrons, local island collaborators, and a reading audience.

He writes beautifully, in prose that is never cheapened with too easy judgments or clogged up with jargon. His book would be difficult to summarize, but suffice to say it will make you want to go back and read early travel literature.

Very highly recommended. I am going to track down Liebersohn's earlier book, "Aristocratic Encounters," in hopes that it will be as good as this one.

It's an extremely user-friendly little book. Organized by geographic regions, it also provides an index listing for dozens of cafés by name. For each café--take L'Heroïque Sandwich in Bordeaux, France, for example--the guide includes the street address, fax and phone numbers, and e-mail and Web-site address (if applicable); gives instructions on how to find it (near Grosse Cloche, in the case of L'Heroïque); tells the hours, prices (and which credit cards are accepted), and facility amenities (number of computers, availability of color, and black and white, printers), as well as any nearby places to visit. Other details are included too, such as whether the café has scanners, video-conferencing software, or America Online software, and whether the café offers any special discounts or freebies to bearers of the guidebook. Good for travelers but not RV's.......2000-02-01

I should have read the reviews better. This is not meant for people touring with RV's. One problem is that is catagorized by country then city. When we are pulling a trailer across country, we want to start with the geographical area at the state level (or smaller) then the town. Also only about 54 pages (of 308) are for sites in the US. That's a lot of pages an RVer will probably not us. In my other life I travel a lot worldwide. This book would be very useful for that situation.

This cybercafe guide is so wonderful for traveling! I took this compact book with me while on the road recently and found it very useful. It saved me a fortune in long distance calls that I would have otherwise had to make. I loved being able to keep in touch without having to worry about time zones. It was so easy to find the cafes by using the information listed. I was able to combine breakfast with keeping in touch with my family and the office. I also met some great locals! I'm taking it with me to Europe this summer for sure!

Like the previous reviewer, I could hardly put this book down. It is an amazing story told in cinamgraphic detail. It would have been a good book written as fiction, but to know the stories are all true (I confirmed the outline with an RAAF offical obit) brings a part of WWII to life. Nicky Barr's life and the courage he showed, were almost too unblieveable to be true. His biography by Peter Dornan is wonderfully written and impossible to put down. Nicky Barr was a quiet, unassuming man, but a fierce, aggressive fighter to his enemy in battle, and a great friend to those who knew him. The reader will come away feeling like the latter.
His wife and true love, Dot, passed away in May 2006 and Nicky joined her in June.

Land degradation is arguably Australia's major environmental problem. As in the rest of the world, rapid population growth and the advocacy of certain rural technology in Australia have led to accelerated soil erosion, soil fertility decline, the loss of wildlife habitants and genetic resources, and deterioration of surface and ground water. Serious social and economic consequences have emerged. This book takes a rigorous, scientific approach, looking at the nature and process of land degradation, its causes and its effects. Yet these stages are not discrete: they are inextricably interwoven. In addition, land degradation is a complex response to the interaction between people and their biophysical environment. Rural Land Degradationexamines the nature of the overall problem in a global context, the degradation of Australia's ecosystems, problems associated with the increasing use of synthetic chemicals, the direct and underlying causes of land degradation as well as the broader social and economic implications.
