The great Quino.......2000-05-18
Joaquín Lavado, Quino, is without a doubt one of the greatest cartoonist of the 20 century, and this book proves it. He's been a mayor influence in my graphic art.
Quino is the mirror of our society.......1999-03-28
Quino, that shy one Argentinean, he has known how to express along more than 25 years, the reality of a sky-scraper society and big social differences. Their jokes are something more than deep and they leave thinking anyone. I for my part discovered it at an early age and it captured me; through Mafalda, Felipe, Manolito, Susanita, among others; their ideals and opinions. I thank you Quino in so many reading afternoons, Thanks Joaquin!

Book Description
The women who broke the rules, creating their own legacy of how to live and sing the blues.
An exciting lineage of women singersoriginating with Ma Rainey and her protégée Bessie Smithshaped the blues, launching it as a powerful, expressive vehicle of emotional liberation. Along with their successors Billie Holiday, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Janis Joplin, they injected a dose of reality into the often trivial world of popular song, bringing their message of higher expectations and broader horizons to their audiences. These women passed their image, their rhythms, and their toughness on to the next generation of blues women, which has its contemporary incarnation in singers like Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams (with whom the author has done an in-depth interview). Buzzy Jackson combines biography, an appreciation of music, and a sweeping view of American history to illuminate the pivotal role of blues women in a powerful musical tradition. Musician Thomas Dorsey said, "The blues is a good woman feeling bad." But these women show by their style that he had it backward: The blues is a bad woman feeling good. 70 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Where are all the blues women?.......2005-07-02
It's not what is said in this book, but what is not. When Elvis Presley gets more space then Memphis Minnie, and Ike Turner gets more pages then Dinah Washington. I began to frown. Where is Big Maybell? Where is Big Mama Thronton? Where is Ruby Glaze? Where is Bessie Tucker? Where is Lucille Bogan? Where is Victoria Spivey? Where is Sippy Wallace? Where is Alberta Hunter? Where is Bonnie Lee? Where is Julia Lee? Where is Nellie Lutcher? Where is Ivy Smith? Where is Katie Webster? Where is Lil Johnson? Where is Bernice Edwards. Where is Ethel Waters? Where is Georgia White? It's not that I appreciate the contributions of Tina Turner or Janis Joplin they have record some fine blues, but Courtney Love? She may be a bad girl, but she is certainly NOT a blues singer. Not to mention the above women who lived the blues to the fullest is a real shame!
Compelling take on blues history.......2005-03-19
Some readers may be familiar with the general contours of the lives of the women presented here--Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Aretha Franklin, and others. But the way that Jackson weaves together these stories against the tapestry of 20th Century American culture is original and compelling. Jackson convincingly shows how different woman blues singers (and later rock and alt country singers) drew on each other's work for inspiration. Their contributions were cultural and social as well as artistic. Most importantly, for potential readers--Jackson tells a good story. The writing is gripping and fast-paced. I recommend it highly.

Book Description
The world's FIRST poetry book about The Internet.
In bits we marvel, in bytes we travel, this is a book written by a techie, Lin Hsin Hsin, which describes, navigates and encapsulates life in the cybersapce in five chapters:
1 Net Life 2 Net.Net 3 Net Art 4 World Wide Web 5 NetFuture
Book Description
For ten years, Herbert J. Gans spent considerable time in four major television and magazine newsrooms, observing and talking to the journalists who choose the national news stories that inform America about itself. Writing during the golden age of journalism, Gans included such headline events as the War on Poverty, the Vietnam War and the protests against it, urban ghetto disorders, the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, and Watergate. He was interested in the values, professional standards, and the external pressures that shaped journalists' judgments.
Deciding What's News has become a classic. A new preface outlines the major changes that have taken place in the news media since Gans first wrote the book, but it also suggests that the basics of news judgment and the structures of news organizations have changed little. Gans's book is still the most comprehensive sociological account of some of the country's most prominent national news media. The book received the 1979 Theatre Library Association Award and the 1980 Book Award of the National Association of Educational Broadcasters. This is the first work to be published under the Medill School of Journalism's "Visions of the American Press" imprint, a new journalism history series featuring both original volumes and reprints of important classics.

An illuminating study of the Media world of yesteryear .......2007-04-15
This book which was first published over twenty- five years ago is a throwback to another time. That was the time when the great share of Americans sat around and got their news from one of the three major networks. The more informed read one of two major weekly news- magazines. We are now in a far more fragmented, diverse news- acquiring time when the 'Internet' has given the 'consumer' a far greater capacity to select and develop knowledge of current events.
Gans analyzes the major networks and sees great similarity in the way they operate. He offers at the end of the book his own suggestions for how to provide a more educational and informative news diet to the American public.
A topflight sociologist Gans studeis CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News, Newsweek and Time.He speaks with a large number of journalists in trying to understand the way the system works. He treats such subjects as 'story selection' 'story suitability' 'objectivity values and ideology' 'profits and audiences' 'pressures censorship, and self- censorship' ' values in the news'
An illuminating study.

Good Desk reference, not-so-good training manual.......2004-10-08
This book gives great tips and shortcuts and good memory joggers for those who are already experienced with Dreamweaver MX 2004. While it doesn't highlight the differences in MX and MX 2004, the reader can easily extract the new, improved stuff.
If you've never touched Dreamweaver and need more explicit training, stick with the TRAINING FROM THE SOURCE manual, DreamweaverMX 2004 by Khristine Annwn Page.
Dreamweaver MX 2004 Savvy.......2004-08-16
You will spend days/weeks absorbing the abundance of information Dreamweaver MX
2004 Savvy contains, but that's what one buys a book of this nature for.
Very good book, packed with information and guidance for one to learn Dreamweaver.
(the book includes a CD by Christian Crumlish and Lucinda Dykes).
Be prepared to spend time with this book if you are serious about learning Dreamweaver. You can read the book and complete the tutorials as you go along (recommended).
The CD that comes with Dreamweaver MX 20004 Savvy contains all the files to complete the tutorials. A bonus graphics chapter on the CD covers image optimization and slicing on Fireworks, Photoshop and Illustrator, an important chapter to help you produce a web site that is efficient. The CD also contains browsers, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera, again necessary to test your web pages in different browsers. Demo's of Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash are included on CD.
A bonus chapter on PDF file and extensions and more. After you have finished reading the book and completed the tutorials, what a great book to refer to when one gets stuck, because believe me, you will get stuck.
Very good book, heavy going at times, particularly for the raw beginner, the tutorials will get the beginner up and ready in no time.
For the advanced user this book goes deeper into Dreamweaver, there are sidebars all through - out the book that gives additional and interesting detailed information.
This book is a must, heavy book to read, but it's full of good information.
Learning More about Dreamweaver.......2004-07-01
DW MX 2004 Savvy is not a quick read book. You will spend days getting all the information that it contains. And, if you really want to know everything it contains, even weeks! It is not written more like a college textbook than a true tutorial. That said there is a ton of information a web designer can learn from DW MX 2004. Fat pipes CCS (Cascading Style Sheets) in detail, expanded tables, tracing image and testing links are only a few of the subjects you will learn about when reading this book. There are even whole chapters dedicated to such things as E-Commerce Sites, hand coding and creating dynamic pages, as well as PHP and XML.
A CD is included with this text and has several sections. The Bonus Chapter on the CD covers optimizing, slicing and exporting images with Fireworks, Photoshop and Illustrator. This is a nice extra but has nothing to do with the title itself. The Software section contains BNBBook - a guest book program; Contribute 2; Director MX 2004; Dreamweaver MX 2004; Fireworks MX 2004; Flash MX 2004; JRun 4: and TopStyle Pro 3.1. There are four browsers available, IE, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape and Opera and eight extensions to add to your DW program to help you create web sites with more ease.
Last but not least there are the files to go with the activities in each chapter so you can follow along with what is being discussed. I would suggest once you have read through the book that you sit down at your computer and try out some of the things the book talks about. If you have the time to delve into Dreamweaver, this book will give you a good grasp of what the program contains. Who knows, you may learn one or two things you didn't know DW could do!
Book Description
The Condor Legion was the expeditionary force of soldiers and airmen sent by Hitler to aid Franco's Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. The Germans used the war as an opportunity to develop equipment and tactics, and their force included not only instructors, but also combat units of artillery, tanks and aircraft. These units tested guns, tanks and planes and perfected techniques which were used in the 1940 Blitzkrieg. Many of officers prominent in the early campaigns of World War II won their first successes in Spain. This book details the Legion and its unique uniform and insignia.
Customer Reviews:
Needed information on Legion Condor.......2007-07-03
This Osprey title goes into much greater detail on German participation in Spain during the Guerra Civil. Accurate numbers on German combatants from all services are supplied. There are some details on equipment used, though some more color plates for tanks, artillery and aircraft would have been helpful. The uniform illustrations are the usual Osprey quality. This volume fills some gaps left by the other Osprey titles, the "Spanish Civil War" and "The Spanish Civil War in the Air".
the Condor Legion.......2006-11-04
terrific and informative. Excellent color plates. Very good reference for the historian or figure painter.

The Definitive Reference for Four Decades.......2007-05-17
The two-volume set by Kobayashi and Nomizu has remained the definitive reference for differential geometers since their appearance in 1963(volume 1) and 1969 (volume 2). Over the decades, many readers have developed a love/hate relationship with these difficult, challenging texts. For example, in a 2006 edition of a competing text, the author remarked that "every differential geometer must have a copy of these tomes," but followed this judgment by observing that "their effective usefulness had probably passed away," comparing them to the infamously difficult texts of Bourbaki.
As a practicing differential geometer, I would argue that Kobayashi and Nomizu remains an essential reference even today, for a number of reasons.
Volume 1 still remains unrivalled for its concise, mathematically rigorous presentation of the theory of connections on a principal fibre bundle---material that is absolutely essential to the reader who desires to understand gauge theories in modern physics. The essential core of Volume 1 is the development of connections on a principal fibre bundle, linear and affine connections, and the special case of Riemannian connections, where a connection must be "fitted" to the geometry that results from a pre-existing metric tensor on the underlying manifold, M.
Volume 2 offers thorough introductions to a number of classical topics, including submanifold theory, Morse index theory, homogeneous and symmetric spaces, characteristic classes, and complex manifolds.
The influence of the texts by Kobayashi and Nomizu can be seen in most of the subsequent differential geometry texts, both in organization and content, and especially in the adoption of notation. If there was a particularly fine point in your favorite introductory differential geometry text that you never completely understood, the odds are good that you will find the answer, fully developed and presented at an entirely different mathematical level, in Kobayashi and Nomizu. It is not an unreasonable analogy to say that learning differential geometry without having your own copy of Kobayashi/Nomizu is like studying literature in the complete ignorance of Shakespeare.
Let there be no mistake about the advanced level of these texts. The Preface to Volume 1 clearly states that the authors presume the reader to be familiar with differentiable manifolds, Lie groups, and fibre bundles, as developed in the (now classical) texts by Chevalley, Montgomery-Zippin, Pontrjagin, and Steenrod. Today's reader is far more likely to have studied these subject from more recent books like those by Boothby, Hall, and Husemoller, but whatever the source, a familiarity IS presumed. The "lightning review" provided in Chapter I of Volume 1 will be extremely tough going for the reader who is new to these topics. It should also be noted that in 329 pages of Volume 1 and 470 pages of Volume 2, not a single diagram or picture is to be found! Those drawn to geometry for its visual aspects will find Kobayashi/Nomizu totally lacking in visual aids.
As with so many classic references in mathematics, the hardbound edition of Kobayashi and Nomizu is no longer in print. Copies appear sporadically on the used book market at absolutely obscene prices. The Classics Library paperback edition is still available, but the serious student will find that the paperbacks simply do not fare well under serious, sustained use.
A good book for advanced learner.......2007-03-12
This book is an a good reference for advanced study in differential geometry. It display an overall view of the subject. However, the symble used is might be too much for beginners.
