Book Description
Who determines whether persons are disabled and eligible to receive the billions of dollars that are awarded in benefits under federal disability programs today in the United States? What kinds of standards are applied in making awards to millions of applicants? And how are disability determinations made and claims adjudicated? Frank S. Bloch provides a careful study of disability determinations in five major federal programs. His findings, models, and calls for reform, including the greater use of medical personnel, should interest those who want to know more about the medical-legal issues relevant to disability determination, the many factors that impact on disability decisionmaking, and the administrative process for making disability decisions. This survey covers the disability determination process in U.S. social security, railroad retirement, civil service, veteran, and black lung disability programs at the federal level. Dr. Bloch defines various standards, key issues, the current use of medical personnel and models for their fuller use and for reforming the disability determination process.

Subjectivist Economics at its best.......2007-07-11
The notion of opportunity cost has now been tacitly accepted among mainstream economists and even included in conventional textbooks. I stress the word "tacit" because mainstream economists are quick to contrast this conception of cost with the more familiar one of direct outlay cost --- that is, the actual resources expended in production. I myself grappled with this dilemma for quite some time, and could see little way around it before encountering this book.
Buchanan accomplishes a lot in this book. Not only does he give a clear presentation of subjectivist cost theory, but he also explores the historical development of this intellectual tradition. The Austrian school is correctly credited for both coining and developing this concept. The tradition then settled and thrived under the aegis of Lionel Robbins and the London School of Economics (LSE).
It is best to grapple with the notion of cost as a consequence of planning. To try to tackle the problem of cost at the resource expenditure stage is to miss the point. A decision must be made for purposes of production (or human action generally). One is confronted with a variety of choices in this respect. The appraisal of these many alternatives is a subjective phenomenon. The weight one attaches to opportunities forgone cannot be measured, examined or compared. It would be difficult even to know what alternatives the planner was aware of. Cost then must be understood as an act of choosing. The cost in the act of decision making represents the plan one wishes to pursue at the expense of other alternatives. In short, if one wishes to understand what led to "direct outlay cost", one must understand the plan which gave rise to this expenditure and the setting in which that decision was made.
Let me also recommend another book (much better in my opinion, but entirely neglected) is L.S.E. Essays on Cost, edited by James M. Buchanan and G. F. Thirlby. There are some extraordinary essays contained in this volume, especially those of Thirlby and Wiseman.
Austrian-based cost theory.......2004-10-15
The word "cost" means something different in a context of making a choice than it does in a context of budgeting or in a context of accounting. Buchanan argues that within the context of making a choice, orthodox economics employs an inaccurate meaning of the word cost. This book is an attempt to develop the correct meaning of the concept of cost within a context of choice.
Buchanan defines cost as "that which the decision-taker sacrifices or gives up when he makes a choice. It consists in his own evaluation of the enjoyment or utility that he anticipates having to forego as a result of selection among alternative courses of action" (p. 41).
Buchanan's notion of cost within a setting of choice is one of opportunity cost. His argument builds on the concept of cost developed in Austrian economics (Carl Menger, E. Böhm-Bawerk, F. von Wieser), and even more so by scholars at the London School of Economics (Lionel Robbins, Friedrich A. von Hayek, Ronald Coase during the 1930s, G.F. Thirlby and Jack Wiseman during the 1950s). It differs from the notion of cost of classical economists (Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Thomas Malthus) in two main ways.
* In classical and neoclassical economics, cost is based on units of resource input during the production process (ch. 1). The value of goods in exchange is then determined by the relative costs of their production (Adam Smith' famous example that a beaver should fetch twice as much in the market as a deer, since it costs twice as much labor to kill a beaver as it costs to kill a deer). Buchanan, on the other hand, defines cost as that given up when making a choice. He prefers marginal-utility economics (cf. William Stanley Jevons, Carl Menger, Leon Walras), according to which exchange value is determined by marginal utility, or demand.
* In classical economics, cost can be objectively measured. Under the Austrian-London-Buchanan concept of cost, on the other hand, cost is subjective, in that it is different for each decision maker (p. 23). "In an unchanging economic environment populated by purely economic men, the two approaches become identical in a superficial sense. In a universe where all behavior is not purely economic, where genuine choice takes place, the important differences emerge with clarity." (p. 25)
Thus, "[i]n a theory of choice, cost must be reckoned in a utility dimension. In the orthodox predictive theory, however, cost is reckoned in a commodity dimension." (p. 41)
Short as the book is, it could have been even shorter. Lots of the second half is barely interesting (ch. 4-6, which are applications of Buchanan's cost theory to, respectively, public finance, Pigovian welfare norms, and nonmarket decision-making; sounds promising but it simply gets too tedious). This would have worked better in a shorter, long paper-length version.
Clarity and Brevity.......2000-09-10
This book is outstanding. It explains sophisticated concepts in economics in a fashion that is relatively easy to understand. The Chapter on "Cost in Economic Theory" clearly illustrates the superiority of marginal value theory and the importance of the concept of opportunity cost. The chapter on "the London Tradition" and the title chapter demonstrate the importance of subjectivity in economic costs. The chapters on public goods and social costs touch on a series of important issues in political economy. Also, Buchanan's discussion of the Socialist Calculation Debate is illuminating. Best of all, it is succinct and lucid. Cost and Choice is a must read for everyone who wants to understand economic theory.

Understanding Income, Wealth, and Inequality in the US.......2001-02-21
In his book, The The New Dollars and Dreams, Frank Levy provides a comprehensive and rigorous history of the distribution of income and wealth in the United States, focusing in detail on post WWII development. The book is readable without sacrificing depth, with appeal to scholarly and non-scholarly audiences alike.
Conservative readers and/or those with a neo-classical economic philosophy of life may find some of the author's assumptions, conclusions, and prescriptions for change off-putting. But it is not an ideological polemic. It presents an enormous amount of data and information along with its judgments, allowing the reader to contest the author's opinions.
Highlights of the book include: the gini coefficient measure of wealth and income inequality, the important distinctions between wealth and income, trends in both wealth and income inequality, how education and the service economy have interacted to affect the distribution of income (but not wealth), and the importance of the distinctions between among the experiences of African American men and women's, as well as African American and white women.
Immensely useful and enjoyable--a rare combination.

Book Description
"How can anyone laugh who knows of old age, disease, and death?"—Buddhacarita
This question, so solemnly posed by the young Buddha, first led Lee Siegel to examine the hitherto unexplored realm of Indian comedy. Laughing Matters is Siegel's account of two intersecting journeys: a search for comic traditions created and preserved in Sanskrit literature and a journey through modern India in quest of a laughter that persists across time and culture.
Hearing a boisterous and bawdy voice from India's past, Siegel has provided original and highly entertaining translations of Sanskrit literature that reveal a sparkling sensibility embedded in the texts. These translations are integrated with a detailed analysis of the types and structures of India's mirth. Siegel develops an original theory of comedy and laughter, applying it to reveal the humor in the ancient works. Defining sacred and profane comedy and the "taste" and "erotics" of laughter, he delineates two main Indian categories of comedy—laughter at others and laughter at oneself—which are roughly parallel to the Western traditions of satire and humor. He examines these categories in all of their forms and functions: satires of manners, social satire, and religious satire; and human and divine comedy. Siegel concludes by presenting his perceptions of humor in modern India as seen through cartoons, movies, books, and social gatherings.
Laughing Matters is both a serious and a hilarious study of the Indian comic sense of life—a vision formed in the convergence of the bitter insight of satire and the sweet outlook of humor. Past and present, the contextual and the universal, scholarship and the picaresque, are all interwoven in this original treatise on the aesthetics of comedy and the psychology of laughter.

Book Description
Rock journalist Steven Rosen goes way back with both bands - he once drove singer Paul Rodgers to an Elvis Presley concert in his Triumph Herald, and covered Bad Company's formation in Rolling Stone.
One of the greatest rock outfits of the early seventies, Free peaked with the seminal hit "All Right Now". When Free disbanded, due amongst other things to Paul Kossoff's spiralling heroin addiction, Rodgers and Free drummer Simon Kirke combined with Mick Ralphs to form one of the seventies best-known supergroups - Bad Company.
Steven Rosen has written major features and cover stories for virtually every important music magazine including Rolling Stone, Musician, Creem, Circus and Guitar Player
Customer Reviews:
Decent overview of Free, marred by florid/turgid prose.......2004-11-30
I almays knew that Free had much more to offer and should be remembered for more than "All Right Now." But while this book gives a decent look at the band, Rosen's writing style is overblown, shallow, and even embarrassing to its detriment.
He is clearly a huge admirer of the group (his first chapter on vocalist Paul Rodgers is called "If God Carried a Tune") and especially the gifted-but-doomed guitarist Paul Kossoff, with whom he seems almost obsessed and who dominates the tale. However, in his hagiography, he continually repeats empty factual platitudes with little insight (i.e. "Paul was out of it again. He blew a gig/session. The guys were angry"). However, he's on the money when talking about the music itself.
The section on the much more successful Bad Company is simply an outline, but even then the writing is too grandiose. Here's what he says about the group's first record: "It was an absolute landmark in the chronology of rock music. At the heart of it were the majestic pop/rock tunes orchestrated with elementary guitar/bass/vocal arrangements. And yet the arrangements and the harmonic content lent an aura of musicality never before touched upon by electrically driven bands."
YEEEESH!
Rosen does get credit for original research and some fresh comments (of varying cooperation) from all Free/Bad Co. members, and as the writer of an early '70s Rolling Stone cover on the latter, clearly knows his stuff with a diehard's apprecation. But overall, think of this book as merely an appetizer on the bands to whet interest and - most importantly -drive readers to the music itself.
Really should have been a Paul Kossoff biography.......2003-08-19
Imagine a book about Free and Bad Company--two of the most seminal acts in rock and roll history--and then find out that the text is just over 200 pages long! That is the book that Steven Rosen has given us with Free at Last. Since brilliant singer Paul Rodger's solo career alone is worth 200 pages, the reader may feel somewhat cheated. Rosen does fill us in on the important details: the birth and later demise of Free, the rise of Bad Company, a short history of Swan Song records; all told in an overly economic style that leaves the reader wanting more. Aside from the occasional factual error (The Hendrix Set, Paul's Jimi Hendrix tribute recorded with Neal Schon, was done live, not in the studio), Rosen frustrates the reader with his inability to stick to one subject. Case in point: Paul Rodgers is repeatedly described as basically a nice guy subject to occasional fits of moodiness. Only when the book is almost complete does Rosen mention, almost in passing, the likely reason: Rodgers rages were probably fueled by alcohol. (He has since cleaned up his act and is "a picture of positivism" (sic)). Also, Bad Company is given short shrift in these pages. (They get less space, it seems, than Paul Kossoff's solo act Back Street Crawler.) Finally, Steve Rosen spends as much time on Kossoff as all the other principals in the book combined. This fact, coupled with the writer's obvious infatuation of the guitarist and his abilities, may lead the reader to conclude that Rosen really wanted to write a biography of Kossoff, but decided to expand his work to include Free and BadCo so it would sell. In short, basically a good read with some interesting anecdotes, but the definitive treatment of these two groups is yet to be written.
give us more.......2002-06-23
i enjoyed reading this book and was glad to find any book about these guys, only the author should have written at least three seperate books, and this could have been part one..with his knowledge and passion for, he should have written a complete book about paul kossoff seperate from possibly a book about paul rodgers with all his other projects including the firm and interviewed all the guys and (please)a whole edition on bad company up to the present.in the end it was a quick read but it left me wanting much more...
I don't know.......2002-06-20
I don't know if this book is good or bad, but I'm waiting eagerly for the supposed biography about AC/DC that Rosen was to write. It would be very good, I guess!
Entertaining overview of Free/Badco.......2002-01-03
Rosen does a good job of keep the reader entertained documenting the exploits of Free and later Bad Company. Being a fan of both bands probably adds a bit of bias here. Free were ultimately the stronger of the two groups, Paul Kossoff's drug problems saddled the group and they came to a sputtering and less than glorious end in '73. Soon after, Rodgers convened Bad Company and went on the superstar success. Rosen's inside knowledge of the bands and of the players and his witty euphemisms and metaphors make the book very readable. However, Rosen has a tendency to repeat himself regarding Kossoff's demise. (He attempted to contact David Kossoff for the book though) Simon Kirke was available to Rosen throughout much of the book and this gives us some insights into the personalities involved: the volatile, jealous and loose tempered Rodgers, the mediating Kirke, the boy genius Fraser and the overtly sensitive Kossoff. In addition, Rosen gleans some comments from Sandhe Chard (Kossoff's girlfriend) which provide some interesting biographical material. Bad Company continue on (without all the original players, which is discussed here as well) and as recently as this past summer [2001] toured with Styx. Some limited dates are scheduled for 2002 and if anyone feels that their brand of 70's arena rock is dated, I suggest giving a good listen to Rodger's voice. In it you can still hear the echoes of Free's pain, despair and longing. Simplicity and economy isn't necessarily all that bad. (Check out David Clayton's "Heavy Load, Free" as well)

good but lacking.......2007-04-19
This is a reasonably decent representation of the history of KMOX Radio out of St.Louis however the authors are somewhat lacking when in comes to balance and reality. I was a part of the 1970's and 80's of this great station and the book is a very "vanilla" offering of most all the personalities. Someday hopefully someone has the abilty to write the real , balanced story of KMOX. For a decent overview, it is OK.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2006-10-04
While this book is well written and may cover a lot of techniques for Photoshop Elements 4.0, the illustrations that accompany the techniques are all in BLACK & WHITE (they are very clear but not in color). The only color illustrations are 6 pages in the center of the book in postage stamp size meaning you have to flip back and forth to the instructions. The color illustrations are not too good.
Since much of what can be done in Photoshow Elements has to do with color and its manipulation, the lack of color for the instructions is a real disappointment.
All the other books on Elements 4 that I have are COLOR books making this pareticular book the bottom of the pile for me.

Book Description
A masterpiece of the historian’s art, Hugh Thomas’s
The Spanish Civil War remains the best, most engrossing narrative of one of the most emblematic and misunderstood wars of the twentieth century. Revised and updated with significant new material, including new revelations about atrocities perpetrated against civilians by both sides in this epic conflict, this "definitive work on the subject" (Richard Bernstein, The New York Times) has been given a fresh face forty years after its initial publication in 1961. In brilliant, moving detail, Thomas analyzes a devastating conflict in which the hopes, dreams, and dogmas of a century exploded onto the battlefield. Like no other account,
The Spanish Civil War dramatically reassembles the events that led a European nation, in a continent on the brink of world war, to divide against itself, bringing into play the machinations of Franco and Hitler, the bloodshed of Guernica, and the deeply inspiring heroics of those who rallied to the side of democracy. Communists, anarchists, monarchists, fascists, socialists, democrats -- the various forces of the Spanish Civil War composed a fabric of the twentieth century itself, and Thomas masterfully weaves the diffuse and fascinating threads of the war together in a manner that has established the book as a genuine classic of modern history.
Customer Reviews:
An easy to understand narrative of the Spanish Civil War.......2007-06-21
Hugh Thomas account of the Spanish Civil War is the most thorough version of the events written to date. His writing style makes the reader believe the entire account could be fiction. It is very easy to read and you hardly feel like you are reading history at all. The Spanish Civil War is one of the most devastating conflicts of the 20th century. It is the precursor to World War II and showcased as well as trained some of Germany, Italy and Russia's top talent. The sheer devastation of tactics involved bullied a civilian population and decimated a country. The rise of Francisco Franco and his victory over the communists was made possible by fascist intervention. The democracies of the world worked hard to try and effect a peace but they were unsuccessful against the determination of the fascists and the communists to prolong the conflict. This is a complicated conflict to understand but Hugh Thomas tries to simplify it as much as he can. This is the best start to understanding the Spanish Civil War and for those who want to understand how World War II began.
The Spanish Civil War: Revised Edition (Modern Library Paperbacks).......2006-11-10
Hugh Thomas combines sound judgment with extensive research. The result is a history that tells you what you want to know and what you need to know.
SPANISH CIVIL WAR PRIMER.......2006-06-20
As the 70th Anniversary of the beginning of the Spanish Civil War is approaching this writer is reviewing some important works that militants should read in order to draw the lessons of the defeat of the Spanish revolution. The writer has been interested, as a pro-Republican partisan, in the Spanish Civil War since he was a teenager. What initially perked my interest, and remains of interest, is the passionate struggle of the Spanish working class to create its own political organization of society, its leadership of the struggle against Spanish fascism and the romance surrounding the entry of the International Brigades, particularly the American Abraham Lincoln Battalion of the 15th Brigade, into the struggle.
Underlying my interests has always been a nagging question of how that struggle could have been won by the working class. The Spanish proletariat certainly was capable of both heroic action and the ability to create organizations that reflected its own class interests i.e. the worker militias and factory committees. Of all modern working class revolutions after the Russian revolution Spain showed the most promise of success. Bolshevik leader Leon Trotsky noted that the political class-consciousness of the Spanish proletariat was higher than that of the Russian proletariat in 1917. Yet it failed in Spain. Mr. Thomas' history of the period, if only indirectly, gives some answers to the reasons for that failure.
When I say indirectly I mean just that. Mr. Thomas's history is strong on the main events, actions and points of the struggle. Militants, unfamiliar with the events of the Spanish Civil War can profitably use this history as a basic reader. However, if a militant is seeking to draw the lessons of the Spanish Civil War this book is not an adequate source and he or she must look elsewhere. Furthermore, Mr. Thomas makes no pretense to offer such a perspective and this writer would argue that he was hostile to any perspective but the view of high European, especially British, governmental politics. Fair enough. There is still plenty of basic information to be gleaned from this work.
The Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 has been the subject of innumerable works from every possible political and military perspective possible. A fair number of such treatises, especially from those responsible for the military and political policies on the Republican side, are merely alibis for the disastrous policies that led to defeat. Mr. Thomas' work analyzes those policies. Unfortunately, he is not sensitive to the base of society that actually fought, endured or fled the war. What Mr. Thomas does find is the furious nature of the struggle in Spanish society between the old agrarian- based economy and the newer capitalist- based economy; the religious tensions caused by the breakup of the old agrarian society and the tensions between believers and church-burners; the struggle between centralizers and federalists which formed the core of the unresolved national questions, especially in Catalonia; the intense political struggles within the broad sections that supported both left and right, especially the role of the Stalinist police apparatus; the international ideological political factors that played a role, if not as erroneously assumed the decisive factor; and, finally, the burning personal antagonisms that in a civil war pit brother against brother, family against family, town against town, etc.. With the caveat mentioned above-read on.
The Definitive Account of the Spanish Civil War........2006-05-25
If all that you know about the Spanish Civil War comes from the works of Papa Hemingway or Pablo Picasso, this well researched history is for you. Thomas' work is well researched and librally cited throughout. He reviewed the surviving documents for both sides and interviewed many of the surviving players including Germans and Russians involved in a War which was a training ground for the European Dictatorships in preparing for World War II.
Thomas lays out the causes of the war in part one. He gives us a breif history of the various parties of the Left and Right and their grievances which lead to the revolt against the Spanish Republic and Franco's Right Wing Dictatorship which ruled Spain until the 1970's.
His review of the campaigns and international intrigue make for a good review of the events for non Spaniards who may not be familiar with this bloody period of European History where tanks, terror bombing, and blitzkreig were used for the first time.
His discussion of European diplomacy in the book shows all the major players including the Germans and the Russians looking for a way to leave Spain without losing face and without triggering another World War before anyone was ready. In the end World War 2 nearly started a few years early and would probably been a two front war at once.
He looks without judgement at the atrochities committed by both sides Republican and Nationalists which were horrendous enough to make their Nazi and Stalinist Soviet advisors cringe.
A very Good History of the Period Leading to World War 2.
This be the one.......2005-12-01
Detailed and objective this is the touchstone of anyone who is serious about studying the Spanish Civil War. It has all the grit, politics and dark savagery of the conflict that was the precursor to WW II

Book Description
The definitive work on the Spanish Civil War, a classic of modern historical scholarship and a masterful narrative.
Paul Preston is the world's foremost historian of Spain. This surging history recounts the struggles of the 1936 war in which more than 3,000 Americans took up arms. Tracking the emergence of Francisco Franco's brutal (and, ultimately, extraordinarily durable) fascist dictatorship, Preston assesses the ways in which the Spanish Civil War presaged the Second World War that ensued so rapidly after it.
The attempted social revolution in Spain awakened progressive hopes during the Depression, but the conflict quickly escalated into a new and horrific form of warfare. As Preston shows, the unprecedented levels of brutality were burned into the American consciousness as never before by the revolutionary war reporting of Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Herbert Matthews, Vincent Sheean, Louis Fischer, and many others. Completely revised, including previously unseen material on Franco's treatment of women in wartime prisons, The Spanish Civil War is a classic work on this pivotal epoch in the twentieth century.

Book Description
The Spanish Civil War was the key conflict of the era between the First and Second World Wars, used by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany to practice for the coming struggle. It provided the first experience of combat flying between opponents using advanced European aircraft since the First World War ended in 1918, and was studied carefully for its lessons. Aircraft of the Spanish Civil War 1936-39 fills a gap on the bookshelves of everyone interested in the history of military or civil aviation. For the first time, all the astonishingly varied types of aircraft that took part in the war are described in a single volume. There are explanatory sections on Spanish aviation before the war, the Civil War itself, the opposing air forces, with their large international contingents, and the camouflage and identity systems they adopted, the civil airlines, and the networks of agencies responsible for smuggling hundreds of aircraft into Spain in defiance of Non-Intervention, as well as lists of the many types and large numbers of aircraft employed by the two sides. ? ?Gerald Howson is an internationally respected scholar of the arms trade during the Spanish Civil War. He has also written the acclaimed book Arms for Spain: The Untold Story of the Spanish Civil War.? ?

Excellent.......1998-08-12
This book is a great source book for the aviation aspect of the Spanish Civil War. It has everything: intrique, conflict, and betrayal. The stories are told with the aircraft type as the reference to the story, and covers aircraft of both sides. By telling the story in this format, the reader gets a good feel for the technical problems involved, the heroism of the pilots, and the political extremism of both sides, and how the Spanish Civil War become a testing ground for the Russian Front of WWII.

Book Description
Throughout history many individuals have dreamed of becoming a king, queen, or president; some achieved success but the great majority were pure fanatasists. However, both types took themselves very seriously and often produced coins, banknotes, stamps, and heraldic devices as proof of their status. From ancient to modern times, from the Far East to the New World, this book examines amazing examples of would-be kings, caliphs, emperors, and rebel leaders.Beginning with the most famous example in history, Adam and Eve's rebellion in the Garden of Eden, Rebels, Pretenders and Imposters also looks at Zeus, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Bonnie Prince Charlie (the Young Pretender) among others. It is an idiosyncratic and fascinating look at history.

I agree with first review about star rating but would qualify review........2005-08-20
The premise of the book is of course imposters and pretenders to the throne, various thrones and it is written by two curators at the British Museum. This book does have some excellent reproductions of coinage of the pseudo-realms covered but hardly dwells on it. Really they are just put out there as examples of historical ephemera from the 'kingdoms' claimed. The book's structure is actually built around a few sub-headings that exemplify various manifestations of claims to crown or country using a number of techniqes: Rebellion, in which a rebel overthrows the established authority in an area and proclaims a new nation; pretenders to the throne in which there is a disputed or competing claims to the crown with a pretender attempting to fulfill his 'birthright'; imposters and slave kings, the chapter heading pretty much says it all; dreamers and hoaxers which you can imagine about and finally 'the nation as pretender.' While this topic could have been made quite fascinating, I think that the authors chose instead to condense much information in too few pages and also were unable to really spice up the tales. Thus, while this book is interesting, especially to coin collectors I think, it isn't a really good read.
Two British musuem curators analyze legitimacy and loyalty.......2003-09-14
This is a light-hearted, if still informative, book which I feel fortunate to have discovered in the bookstore at the British Museum in London. Written by two curators at the British Musuem in the department overseeing the coins collection, this book, well illustrated with coins and notes from different historical epochs, looks at the origins and dynamics of legitimacy, sovereignity, loyalty and rebellion in various episodes of political changes from ancient to modern times. Even though it reads more like a coin catalogue than a sociologically or historically penetrating analysis of these issues, it raises some important questions of how we come to give, withdraw, and subvert loyalty.

Book Description
This book reports modelling work within the Norwegian national research program on multi-species management. The work was concentrated on the interaction between different species in the Barents sea. The book combines contributions from different fields - fisheries biology, ecology, fisheries economics and statistics. In principle, the work covers the whole process related to the management of the ecological system, from plankton inflow, feeding fish stocks, their interaction, economic calculations and finally a general approach to the decision problems for managers. The goal of the program was to develop a decision tool for the Norwegian fisheries management authorities. The book can be seen as a step in this direction.
