GOOD Installers book.......2007-03-15
Its a very good book, which starts reviewing from basics to intense data related to the topic of Fiber Optics.
Basics its very important , its like the foundation of knowledge to me, like breakfast is the most important food of the whole day..
I recommend this book.
The Fiber Optic Technicians Manual.......2005-11-04
Hi, I'm Jim Hayes, editor/author of The Fiber Optic Technicians Manual, with the third edition just released.
I'd like to clear up the confusion created by Mr. Cooke. Delmar Learning, the publisher of the book, also offers two companion books, an Instructor's Guide that provides guidance to instructors using the book in their classes and a laboratory manual for guiding students through hands-on activities that develop skills in fiber optic installation.
The Instructor's Guide has suggestions on how to structure classes using the book as well as answers to all the chapter exercises. The Lab Manual has step-by-step instructions on setting up and teaching labs in fiber optics. The instructor teaching a class with this book should have both manuals in addtion to the textbook to teach a class. A reader interested in developing skills in fiber optic installation only needs the Lab Manual.
We also offer complete instructor teaching packages based on the books and self-study programs through VDV Academy ([...])
If you want to learn about fiber optics and how to design and install networks using fiber optics (or teach it), this is a booked aimed directly at you.
Instructors Guide to Fiber Optics Technicians Manual.......2003-03-11
This is the second edition by Jim Hayes an instructor with Fiber U of "Instructors Guide to Fiber Optics Technicians Manual" WARNING You need the "other" manual issued in Feb 2000, not this one issued in March 2002 for the full 17 chapter overview!

Book Description
Nonlinear Econometric Modeling in Time Series Analysis presents recent developments in this important area of research. This is the first volume to focus on the more recent literature on nonlinear time series. Specific topics covered with respect to nonlinearity include cointegration tests, risk-related asymmetries, structural breaks and outliers, Bayesian analysis with a threshold, consistency and asymptotic normality, asymptotic inference, and error-correction models.
Book Description
In what constitutes a landmark in the field of national accounts, Raymond W. Goldsmith gives detailed estimates of the nation's assets and liabilities year by year from 1953 through 1975 and for the benchmark years of 1900, 1929, and 1980. Special features of this work include presentation of data sector by sector, which casts light on the changing roles of financial institutions, and Goldsmith's expression of data in the form of ratios rather than in absolute dollar values, a device that makes the material both more informative and easier to absorb.
The most comprehensive and extensive study of national wealth ever attempted, The National Balance Sheet will be a rich resource for researchers and users of national accounts.

Customer Reviews:
skip it.......2006-02-28
Obviously enough, Buckley had already written as much as he knows about Bowie in his definitive biography, which is definitely worth a read. This book has apparently just been shoved out there to make some more money; Buckley just provides a few very brief, random, chatty observations about the records. There's neither information nor interpretation, and this book is simply not worth reading, not even for dedicated fans.
Anyone seriously inerested in Bowie should instead try The Complete David Bowie by Nicholas Pegg, which is a mine of information.
nice to own.......2000-08-09
Although I don't agree with everything that David Buckley says on David Bowie in this book, I would recommend it to any fan. This book contains a song-by-song analysis from everything on The Man Who Sold the World until Outside. It also include a few words on some soundtracks and compilations. He does discuss the self titled David Bowie album and Space Oddity, but not in as much detail as everything else. This is a great book for any David Bowie fan to own and I'm recommending it to YOU.
Makes an unfaithful fan faithful........1999-10-09
I'll admit it. I'm not the biggest Bowie fan. But after buying this book, you get drawn into the "Bowie-ness". Everyone should have a copy of this book. My friend reads it everytime he comes over. The book becomes an addiction.
Compact Delight.......1998-12-10
This CD-sized book is essential for the Bowiephile and indispensable for those just discovering Bowie's genius. This book lists all of Bowie's albums and singles with a synopsis/review of each. It also includes videos, films and soundtracks. The version I bought came with a CD containing an interview. The Complete Guide to the Music of David Bowie.......1998-01-15
A CD-sized book detailing David Bowie's official albums, from "David Bowie" (1967) to "1.Outside" (1995), as well as compilations and sountracks. It features a detailed song-by-song analysis. A good reference for the Bowie aficionado.

Housecleaner extraordinaire Louise Rafkin reads her own work as efficiently as she cleans bathtubs and snoops through the letter pile. Rafkin's voice is pleasantly modulated and well suited to her dry humor in Other People's Dirt, a parallel tale of her cleaning habits and socio-spiritual explorations. Vacuum-cleaner sound effects demarcate chapters in this nearly unabridged version, whose brief chapters are punchy and well suited to audio. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Barrie Trinkle
Book Description
"Alone in a house, I piece together strands of life stories as if I were an archaeologist, the home a midden... I don't read diaries, I read clues." After earning an M.A. in Comparative Literature, Louise Rafkin, facing a career choice, took the road less traveled. She became a housecleaner. The money was better than teaching, the lifestyle intriguing for someone with an insatiable curiosity about her fellow human beings. And while she quickly became an expert on the best vacuum cleaner in the world--and the most efficient paper towels--she also saw the unseen parts of people's lives.
In this fresh, funny, strikingly original memoir, she talks about her invisible status as a domestic worker in a world of illicit sex and secret livees, of closet alcoholics and binge eaters, unlikely spiritualists and revealing celebrities.
In Other People's Dirt, Louise Rafkin reveals something about our values, our society, and ourselves. And, from the detritus of our lives, she gives us something at once delightfully entertaining and profound.
"Rafkin is a wonderful storyteller." --The Wall Street Journal
"Rafkin delivers the dirt on cleaning with investigative zeal and remarkable depth. A!" --Entertainment Weekly
"A wonderfully odd-ball memoir...Rafkin delights in the absurdities of her profession and has a keen eye for the peculiarities of human behavior." --The San Francisco Chronicle
Customer Reviews:
No Dirt Here.......2006-12-01
I'm not sure what this book is supposed to be -- a tell-all? An exploration of the history of cleaning and its place in western culture? A treatise about the underclass? I think part of the problem is that the author herself is not sure where she is, in the metaphysical sense. I couldn't tell why she was a cleaner. If she liked it. Even where she lived! And as far as "other people's dirt," there was precious little here. Not at all what I expected. I was more than a little annoyed at the curious tone the book took towards the idea that those who hire cleaners are somehow exploiting them... Very confusing. I was looking for an author who was going to dish some dirt and instead got an earful about Marxist theory.
Waste of time.......2006-05-17
I should have cleaned my house instead of reading this haphazardly written mess.
good clean fun.......2005-07-16
Entertaining, and easily read in one sitting. It isn't particularly deep or meaningful, but certainly jaunty and fun. Ms. Rafkin has an eye for the absurd. She briefly mentions a book about the history of maids, and more information about that would have made the book more interesting. I liked the tips on what to do if you hire a housecleaner; that's worth the price of the book.
The Real Dirt.......2005-04-20
This book should be required reading for not only every person in the business of cleaning houses, but also for those who have their houses cleaned. "Other People's Dirt" portrays a truthful, funny, occasionally aggrieved, but always intelligent story of occupation--an occupation often overlooked and stereotyped.
As the owner of a vacation resort, a mom and pop operation where I'm not only the "glamorous" hostess but (on Saturdays) the very unglamorous cleaning woman, I could relate to the tales exposing sometimes surprising (sometimes revolting) lifestyles. While the author seemed to dive into lives of her clients far more than I would ever consider, it's clear she did so with the purpose of studying human nature. To call her "grumpy" or even resentful by exposing these stories in the book, critics fail to see the pure entertainment value of this quick, little read.
On the other hand, I've had weekly cleaning ladies enter my personal home(s) for many, many years. Through Louise Rafkin's book, I have learned how to keep anything truly personal, personal. For example, you bet I strip my own bed lest anyone attempt to get an inside look at my sex life!!!
Particularly because of the controversy and strong reader reactions it has caused, I think this book is a gem and I highly recommend.
From the author of "I'm Living Your Dream Life," and "The Things I Wish I'd Said," McKenna Publishing Group.
Do I want to have a maid?.......2004-04-27
I thought it was very interesting how the author's described what she witnessed, and what evidence she saw of people's lives. The insight she gave into her own life and the lives of other house cleaners was also interesting and insightful. I thought the book ended a little strangely but I have learned that these types of books and their authors often end strangely.

Book Description
The goal of this book is to serve as a design/idea book. Our mantra is that simplicity leads to great results. Small Web Sites, Great Results will show readers basic strategy and introduce them to the philosophy of doing more with less. The book features design guidelines to make sites look professional even on a small scale, techniques to get the hits from search engines, and more. Users will learn to construct a holistic Web presence that garners real results. An added benefit of this concept is that along with the book there is a simple Web site system, a series of pages, and scripts which will accommodate the principles presented in the book. Users may go to the site, download the frameworks, and instantly post them for their own use.
Customer Reviews:
Helped me create a successful site. LESS IS MORE.......2007-05-19
The book is a quick and enjoyable read. It motivates its advice well and supports it with numerous website examples. I read the book and studied these example websites before setting to design and implement a website for a clinical psychology practice. The website I created follows the book to a T. It's been very successful and many clients and collegues mentioned themselves how much they like the website. [...]
This is NOT a "how-to" book........2006-07-23
I purchased this book after reading the feedback and other information. Overall, it could prove to be helpful as my website matures and business grows, however, as a novice I needed something more hands-on and how-to. The information contained in the book is valuable, but not helpful to me at the moment. I found myself saying "that's great, but how do I do that." Now, if I were planning to pay a website developer, this would surpass my expectations.
Good book, missing a strong focus.......2005-12-02
I like this book. It contains a strong summary of basic website design concepts in chapters 1-5. These are ideas that can be found elsewhere, but this book has them combined in a succinct, easy to comprehend format. For me, the book started to lose it in Chapter 6 where the author goes into a discussion of marketing. I felt that the topics here were very superficially covered, and he had too broad a focus. He tried to cover web marketing from a traditional marketing standpoint, and there are much better books that cover general marketing. He also touched on website placement. His comments were so minimal though, that I didn't feel they gave enough knowledge to the reader to really make a big difference. It would be better to find a good book on search engine optimization and skip that portion of this book.
Chapter 8 presents some good ideas on how to utilize a professional web designer, and chapters 9 and 10 cover site maintenance well. Chapters 11-15 have some good examples.
The other comment I have about the book is that the author seems to artificially apply everything to small sites. Much of the design advice he gives applies to large sites as well, yet he always states that they are small site design concepts.
Exactly what you need to get a successful site up and running.......2005-11-24
There may be no shortage of websites these days but there sure is a shortage of ones that are well designed and easy to navigate. Unfortunately, even most of the large websites are overly crowded, hard to figure out how to do things, and absolutely awful in terms of user friendliness. Author Doug Addison does an excellent job of discussing problems with websites and how to design ones that are user friendly and a joy to use. With an obvious flair for the artistic this book really shows some excellently designed web sites. This book is the answer to the plethora of websites that tend more to be an exercise in frustration than anything else. The focus is on creating a user experience that is positive and encourages the user to visit again. For a truly great website that produces the results you want you have to have the right focus for your website, the right design, and the right navigation format to produce a positive customer experience. Doug Addison not only helps you do this but also includes many tips and techniques for content and functionality that users love and as a result turn your visitors into customers. Personally, I've been to sites where I could not figure out how to complete a purchase so I went to a competitor. You don't want this happening to your website. This is one of the best books on website design I've read and the advice really hits the spot for frustrations and problems I have experienced. Bravo, Doug Addison, now if we could just get those technical people and website designers to read Small Websites, Great Results then we would all be happier.
A "Must-Have" Book for Anyone with a Website.......2005-10-17
This book will help anyone at any stage of the website endeavor; it demystefies the process of setting up a effective site, and it offers suggestions for making existing sites more user-friendly. As a professional person in a non-technical field, I found this book to be very helpful in making decisions about how to structure my website. This book convinced me that "less is more" and taught me how to make key design decisions to increase traffic. "Great Results" - indeed!

Robert Kaplan's Warrior Politics is an extended, willfully provocative essay arguing that the bedrock of sound foreign policy should be "comprehensive pragmatism" rather than "utopian hopes." Kaplan calls for a reestablishment of American (primarily) realpolitik, one distanced from Judeo-Christian (or private) virtue and closer to a "pagan" (public) one. He aligns himself with America's Founding Fathers, who, he says, believed good government emerged only from a "sly understanding of men's passions." His book is a mix of aphoristic pronouncements, brief contemporary political analyses, rapid-fire parallels between conflicts ancient and current, and copious quotes from historians and thinkers through the ages (Livy, Thucydides, Sun-Tzu, Machiavelli, and Thomas Hobbes among them). Though its historical gleanings are often too summary and suspiciously convenient, Warrior Politics promises to generate controversy among students of global politics--just as it was designed to do. --H. O'Billovitch
Book Description
In
Warrior Politics, the esteemed journalist and analyst Robert D. Kaplan explores the wisdom of the ages for answers for today’s leaders. While the modern world may seem more complex and dangerous than ever before, Kaplan writes from a deeper historical perspective to reveal how little things actually change. Indeed, as Kaplan shows us, we can look to history’s most influential thinkers, who would have understood and known how to navigate today’s dangerous political waters.
Drawing on the timeless work of Sun Tzu, Thucydides, Machiavelli, Hobbes, among others, Kaplan argues that in a world of unstable states and an uncertain future, it is increasingly imperative to wrest from the past what we need to arm ourselves for the road ahead. Wide-ranging and accessible,
Warrior Politics is a bracing book with an increasingly important message that challenges readers to see the world as it is, not as they would like it to be.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing new from the intellectual elite.......2007-09-22
Kaplan seems to be a bastion for propaganda attempting to justify American power centers based on history written by Western educated classes. He claims that "adult" choices in foreign policy are based on distinctions, because we must make a mature distinction on the type of dictators and terrorists we support and the kind our enemies do (like the Soviets during the Cold War). He gives Romania, under Caecescu, as an example for showing people what kind of dictators the Soviets supported whereas "our dictators" were less brutal. Let's take his example; Romania, Caecescu, an utterly hideous regime. That is something we can all agree on. What Kaplan forgets to tell us is that the U.S. supported Caecescu, as did Britain, right until the very end (we know this from internal National Security documents in the archives). It's only a small example because we've supported even more vicious regimes, like Suharto, the Taliban, Pinochet, etc. No one accepts the argument that ultra right-wing jingoists like Kaplan put forth comparing and contrasting puppet totalitarian regimes. His justification seems to be "We're supporting this particular type of terrorism, so it is good."
neo- fascist .......2007-09-21
This book is an attempt to rehabilitate and promote old-school Fascist ideas. Kaplan calls for the immoral men of Iron to rise up and rule the world by force of will again. Morality is for fools and women. All life is "struggle" and only the strong can survive. Yes its the good old message from Italy in the 1930s and Spain under Franco. If you think Christianity is a big part of whats wrong with the world and that there is nothing more to life than an utterly amoral struggle for power without rules, this is your book and Kaplan is your guy.
Cuts to the Chase.......2007-09-06
Now I know why I tire so quickly of the philosopher kings with whom I do politics.
accepting humanity and dealing with reality.......2007-05-02
This book helps explain to me why "good men" such as former presidents Wilson and Carter did not make effective world leaders. Dealing with the realities of world events requires accepting human realities which are not necessarily of the Christian persuasion.
Observing and accepting a changing world is vital in confronting threats and there are historical models to explore and in some cases followed.
This book expands the bounds of our dealing with the realities of human nature not as we would wish it to be but as it is. Different world views prevail in much of the trouble spots and our leaders must get their heads out of the clouds and firmly get their feet onto the ground.
The changing role of media in the world stage is another reality that must be dealt with.
This book does not possess all ther answers but it is a good start.
politic's pagan ethos.......2007-01-18
Watching the news each night about the Iraq war, replete with powerful images of prison tortures, destroyed cities, fleeing civilians, crowded hospitals, suicide bombers and the like, makes Robert Kaplan's book of a few years ago sound prescient: "The post-Industrial Revolution empowers anyone with a cellular phone and a bag of explosives. America's military superiority guarantees that such new adversaries will not fight according to our notions of fairness: they will come at us by surprise, asymmetrically, at our weakest points, as they often have in the past. Asymmetry gives terrorists and cybercriminals their strength, since such adversaries operate beyond accepted international norms and value systems on a plane where atrocity is a legitimate form of war" (p. 9).
It used to be that we feared states that sponsored terrorism, but now we must fear terrorists that sponsor states. Kaplan takes a very grim view of human nature and argues that in today's world statecraft must have the moral imagination to think the unthinkable. The pagan ethos he commends, then, is rooted in a "constructive pessimism" or pragmatic realpolitik that forces us to think "tragically." Hobbes and Malthus, he suggests, are sure guides; we should not be surprised by anarchy, terror, barbarism, and irrationality. American exceptionalism---the naïve notion that we are different and will escape tragic history--is foolish hubris (witness American murder, rape and torture of Iraqi prisoners). In Kaplan's view, the goal of statecraft is to use coercive power to make the best of bad situations and to bring order out of chaos.
I find Kaplan's realism compelling, but chilling to my Christian sensitivities. Modern statecraft must always separate personal virtue and public policy. The warrior politician, says Kaplan, must like Machiavelli know how to do bad in order to accomplish good, promote the necessary and not the nice, sanction deceit to avoid war, refuse intervention when no national interest is at stake, or kill many people in order to avoid killing even more people. The Christian, it would seem, has two choices: withdraw from this unsavory realm, or enter the fray at the risk of losing your soul.

Book Description
In this sophisticated study of power and resistance, Jean Comaroff analyzes the changing predicament of the Barolong boo Ratshidi, a people on the margins of the South African state. Like others on the fringes of the modern world system, the Tshidi struggle to construct a viable order of signs and practices through which they act upon the forces that engulf them. Their dissenting Churches of Zion have provided an effective medium for reconstructing a sense of history and identity, one that protests the terms of colonial and post-colonial society and culture.
