Book Description
In 1990, a congressional subcommittee warned of "financial knaves and buccaneers" in the insurance industry-unlicensed and largely unregulated companies that operate out of countries like Antigua and the Cayman Islands and sell hundreds of millions of dollars in worthless insurance policies to unsuspecting Americans every year. Increasingly, when a fire, car accident, or medical emergency strikes, policyholders suddenly find themselves victims of a global con game as phone calls are not returned and claim settlements fail to materialize, resulting in financial ruin if not physical harm.
Robert Tillman portrays the often surreal world of the burgeoning offshore insurance industry; a world in which sophisticated white-collar criminals operate beyond the reach of government regulators to set up elaborately orchestrated scams that drain illegal profits out of the $3 trillion U.S. insurance market. He also describes how the new global economy allows these scam artists to take advantage of rapidly changing financial markets and the regulatory environments that surround them.
Drawing on congressional hearings, court documents, published articles, and interviews with law enforcement officials, Tillman uses numerous case studies to illustrate degrees of insurance fraud: simply ignoring auto, medical liability, and worker compensation claims while citing NAFTA exemptions to local regulations; selling bogus policies to businesses in "redlined," low-income neighborhoods and to high-risk drivers abandoned by legitimate auto insurers; and falsifying multinational subsidiaries, assets, and even identities of company principals. He examines how "fantasy islands" are created, explores emerging connections between offshore entities and money laundering, drug cartels, and organized crime, and discusses how outlaw insurers evade prosecution by setting up complex financial networks that crisscross national boundaries.
Tillman's timely analysis of this rapidly growing transnational criminal activity concludes with solid recommendations for steps that governments can take to protect their citizens from global insurance fraud.

Made me want to become a drummer.......2006-06-30
I have read this before, and enjoyed it so much that I purchased it for two wonderful drummers that I know, one a young man who is in my congregation who has a real gift as a drummer, and who I wanted to affirm and encourage, and one a friend of mine who is as enthusiastic as Mickey Hart is. This is a fabulous and magical book that will turn even those who are lukewarm about drumming into people who "get it."
The Primal Sound...........2003-06-16
Mickey Hart goes into a global exploration of percusion instruments in this particular book. The interplay between sound and mysticism is explored, with lavish photographs and numerous quotations to boot. Although this book isn't much on words, theres a lot of good stuff in here. Breaking it down into various regions, Hart shows some wonderful examples of musical instruments used in Africa, Oceania, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Aside from more familar instruments (bullroarers, clap sticks and various drums), he also gives examples of exotic instruments like the shekere, mbira, shawm, skull drums and gamelan orchestras. In addition, he explores numerous non-western cultures, such as the Rashaida, Ethiopians, Tutsis, Nepalis and Ojibwa. Aside from this are little side-bars on various related subjects such as Shamanism, Capoeira, Carnival, drums and warfare and the "dance of the dead". Theres even a whole list of names various cultures around the world have for the bullroarer, which is considered sacred in cultures as far away as the Australian aborigines and the Apache of North America. And, of course, it explores the process of sound, from the big bang to the end of time itself, complete with a lot of cultural notes and tidbits that are great to know. For instance, did you know tht Ethiopian soldiers used to be accompanied by trumpters and drummers who symbolized the drummers who will herald the Apocalypse? Or that in some parts of the world drums really were used to communicate? Or that early Christians were summoned to church with a "sound board" instead of a bell? All of these small little notes, and many other historical facts and curiousities are contained within this book. And, finally, there are also a handful of illustrated myths and legends retold in the book. These include a Sioux legend of the origin of the powow drum and a Koori story about how the bull-roarer came to earth, as well as a grisly tale of what the Inca did to captured foes (made them into drums) and a Siberian tale of creation.
This is really an amazing book. Those with an interest in anthropology, music or shamanism should take a brief look at this book. Heck, everyone should. It may not be a lot of reading, but it is wonderful to flip through and learn about the history of sound, mysticism and the pulse of the world itself. Just buy it and you'll see what I mean.
Pretty Good, Has Some Flaws.......2000-07-12
This book is great for an overview of percussion instruments around the world. The history of these percussion instruments is show through facts and folklore. The massive amounts of photographs in this book help with the indentification of the many, many instruments. This book is great if you want a brief overview of the history of percussion, but if you want something that is a little deeper than that I would find another book. This book is rather simple and relies on the pictures to do most of the work. Still, this is a cool book.
Planet Drum - the heartbeat of our world.......2000-05-19
A celebration of Percussion & Rhythm. Origin Stories & original paintings of drummers, singers, dancers, clappers & all manner of rhythmic instruments from the four corners of the world & distant times, illuminate this passionate, enchanting tour. There is a tape that accompanies the reading of this lovely book.
As a poet, I used this book for research-useful & inspiring.......1999-05-11
I wanted to write about Drums, not in the fashion as other poets do, but from a more culturally diverse angle and this book gave me the variations needed to succeed with my attempt. The poem that I wrote (for performance) is entitled "God is a Drummer". As a performance poet and author, I wanted to move from my comfort zone of writing, challenging myself on a new level to combine culture and spirituality to educate and inspire others with this subject matter. "PLANET DRUM" really helped a great deal. Thanks for a well written and easy to digest work.

Book Description
How do governments shape the music industry?
Rock and Popular Music examines the array of institutional and policy considerations which help determine what music is produced, how it is heard, and its connections to other cultural activity. The contributors focus on the way rock is socially regulated by policy agendas and frameworks set in place by the industries theselves--music/video production, broadcasting and some governmental support (or the lack of it.) Topics covered include: rock in East Germant, the American music industry and the global market, feminist musical practice, radio airplay formats, censorship, and Black popular music. In its exploration of policies and institutions,
Rock and Popular Culture suggests significant directions for the study of contemporary music.
Contributors: Mavis Bayton, Jody Berland, Georgina Born, Marcus Breen, Simon Frith, Reebee Garofalo, Line Grenier, Larry Grossberg, Ross Harley, Steve Jones, Chris Lawe-Davies, Krister Malm, Paul Rutten, John Shepard, Will Straw, Graeme Turner, Roger Wallis, Peter Wicke.

very very good.......2007-08-30
I would say that this is written for an advanced beginner in that you should be comfortable with the tools and getting around the menus. I have only been working with digital photography for a year and a half and installed photoshop cs2 about 8 months ago..This book will help you so much if you just complete the excercises (examples) starting at the beginnning..It's loaded with tips for the beginner.. I highly recommend it...
Great Book!.......2007-08-23
I am not one to leave a review but this book was so easy to read and follow that I have to let everyone know. Great tips, easy to follow with color pages and images....I just love it!
Photoshop CS2 FUN!.......2007-05-24
I learned a lot with this book. Exremely easy to follow instructions, and great tips!
An excellent resource.......2007-04-04
I purchased this book soon after I acquired a "beginners guide" to Photoshop CS2. Like most people, I wanted to apply some PS techniques to my images straight away. The "Top 100" tricks includes the majority of techniques I require and actually helps to understand the theory of the more formal beginners guide. This book does not assume that the reader knows all the terms and tools and by following the very clearly illustrated step by step instructions, even newbies to PS can achieve startling results. I've scouted round bookshops looking at the numerous PS CS2 publications - this is as good as any and better than most.
Excellent addition!.......2007-03-12
As a high school digital photography teacher I have found this book an excellent addition to my photoshop book collection. It is very easy for anyone to follow and we have great use from the five copies I purchased.
Book Description
For Frederick the Great, the prescription for warfare was simple: kurz und vives ("short and lively")--wars that relied upon swift, powerful, and decisive military operations. Robert Citino takes us on a dramatic march through Prussian and German military history to show how that primal theme played out time and time again.
Citino focuses on operational warfare to demonstrate continuity in German military campaigns from the time of Elector Frederick Wilhelm and his great "sleigh-drive" against the Swedes to the age of Adolf Hitler and the blitzkrieg to the gates of Moscow. Along the way, he underscores the role played by the Prussian army in elevating a small, vulnerable state to the ranks of the European powers, describes how nineteenth-century victories over Austria and France made the German army the most respected in Europe, and reviews the lessons learned from the trenches of World War I.
Through this long view, Citino reveals an essential recurrent pattern--characterized by rapid troop movements and surprise attacks, maneuvers to outflank the enemy, and a determination to annihilate the opposition--that made it possible for the Germans to fight armies often larger than their own. He highlights the aggressiveness of Prussian and German commanders--trained simply to find the enemy and keep attacking--and destroys the myth of Auftragstaktik ("flexible command"), replacing it with the independence of subordinate commanders. He also brings new interpretations to well-known operations, such as Moltke's 1866 campaign and the opening campaign in 1914, while intro-ducing readers to less familiar but important battles like Langensalza and the Annaberg.
The German way of war, as Citino shows, was fostered by the development of a widely accepted and deeply embedded military culture that supported and rewarded aggression. His book offers a fresh look at one of the most remarkable, respected, and reviled militaries of the past half millennium and marks another sterling contribution to the history of operational warfare.
This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

Review of German miltary operation.......2007-03-30
I appreciated this items for summary of German military operation for past several hundred years.especially WWI and WWII, in short German war doctrine is lively and short war.But only disadvantage is lack of organization studies on German army in each period
German Way of War.......2007-02-11
Weather a scholar or a novice to understanding the German art of warfare, Robert Citino compels the study like few can. By bring over two hundred year of fascinating and exciting new ways at understanding the impact that Germany or Prussia has contributed to military history. This book will keep you want to know what will happen in the next campaign, either it be Frederick William the Elector to Frederick the Great. You will not be disappointed by the in depth knowledge presented.
A Case for the Operational Level of War.......2006-11-16
The author presents a case of a German way of war as a social-cultural phenomenon that has the roots of its development in Frederick the Elector and Frederick the Great.
The author presents a well structured case of the development of offensive doctrine, Prussian/German style, that was inculcated in Prussian/Germanic officers beginning with Frederick the Elector but first put to practice by Frederick the Great.
The author uses a number of well known historical battles to state his case for an offensive operational level of war. In essence he refutes the US Army claim that it was US versions of this same doctrinal style that mastered the "operational" level of war.
This book is decidedly not a tactical, operational or strategic analysis of Prussian/German methods of waging war, but, rather a book that explores how the concept of operational doctrine and offensive developed and was inculcated at an early age.
The author also uses recent reference to US Army doctrine and implies a correlation of the development of the air land battle/ deep battle doctrine with German methods used in WW II, specifically, Operation "Fall Gelb, the German Invasion Plan of 1940
All in all it's a good book, but not necessarily geared to the novice of Military Studies or Military History.
Dr. Terry Tucker, Afghan Army Trainer and advisor
From the new breed of military historians.......2006-08-30
Professor Citino, along with historians like Robert DiNardo (more diplomatic history) and Geoff Megargee are amongst a new breed of military & diplomatic historians. They seem to take off with Dennis Showalter as their touchstone (no problem there!), and merge with folks like David Glantz to give us a new view of German military history, especially, of course, WWII. If you want to be state of the art in your knowledge, you have to read these guys. You will not be sorry. They are utilizing the inspiration of Showalter- definitive writings intertwining diplomatic & military histories, to write some great stuff. This book is amongst that "great stuff".
I have one qualm with the book. It is really the Prussian-German way of war, not going into, e.g. traditions of Bavaria, Saxony, etc. That would have been interesting, very interesting in fact, but might have made the book prohibitive in length and discourse. Still, I'd like to know what influence, if any, the Bavarian military tradition had on the army established in 1871 by the German Empire, and afterwards. This is a small qualification for a first-class book.
The book brilliantly sets out its thesis of a steady and somewhat predictable (attack the enemy wherever they are) military tradition in the German Army from the Great Elector through 1945. Relevant examples are given to support the thesis, and Professor Citino convinced me of his point of view. Fascinating sections on Frederick the Great, (the first) Von Moltke, Von Schlieffen, and Hans Von Seeckt. Don't you think a new bio of Von Seeckt is needed? I also like his analysis of the willingness of the German General Staff to accede to the wishes of Hitler, then try and expunge its record post 1945. It never ceases to amaze me that it is only in the past 5-10 or so years that we have started to see Hitler as more than a parody. Finally we can admit that he was often quite on the ball & skilled, although ultimately deranged & wrong-headed. This, of course, leaves aside his penchant for Genocide. Also, read the footnotes- especially about Terence Zubler's book (Pg. 352, note 19), "the most important book on WWI in decades". To bad the damn book is so expensive!!
Another "must" for your WWII library.
or Why the Germans Fight Like They Do.......2006-03-26
Robert Citino takes a foundational view of Prussian (later German) way of seeing warfare that has led to the war fighting patterns observable over the past 400 years. Specific viewpoints based in the economic and population base of the Prussian state of 400 years ago led to a way of fighting that is recognizable throughout the history since.
Citino looks to Frederick William I as the progenitor of the Prussian way of war in the modern era. Frederick ruled a nation "on the periphery of the Holy Roman Empire" which had a very limited economy and a small population. It was impossible to field and maintain a large army for an extended war. Therefore, the Prussians had to fight to win very short, violent wars. The only way to do this was to attack the enemy with the utmost aggression. The best way to attack was to maneuver onto the enemy's flank or into his rear and destroy him.
According to Citino, this thinking is the basis for Prussian/German organization, training, and operation from Frederick's time forward. The author provides us with many examples of this modus operendi in action covered the era from Frederick William I to Operation Barbarossa. The author also points out where the Prussian way of war is deficient--logistics and intelligence being among the most important shortcomings.
I found this book superb. Seeing German military history through the lens of Prussian military philosophy makes what has been previously mysterious understandable. Despite years of reading WW2 history, I still could never get my head around certain concepts. Why were the Germans so unprepared for the end of the campaign season in 1941? Why were they so reluctant to go into winter positions when they had time? Why was the logistical effort so poorly planned and executed compared to the operational effort? Various authors have made various claims which never really satisfied me. Seen through the lens of Prussian bias, the events of the 1941 campaign make perfect sense. The Germans made every effort to finish the war in a single campaign. They were so strongly temperamentally disinclined (especially Hitler) to go to the defensive with the enemy still in the field against them that the Germans pushed until they literally ran out of strength. The WW1 experience only reinforced their determination not to go into prepared positions until the offensive options had been exhausted. Ultimately, there was no rational reason for the Germans to refuse to get themselves ready for Winter 1941-1942. They simply couldn't bring themselves to do it because doing so went against everything they believed.
This book would be a valuable addition to any library with a section for military history.

Beyond a Beginner's Book.......2004-03-29
Dr. Bulter's book is undoubtedly for the apiring "heavyweights" of Brazilian racial politics because it assumes that the reader has a basic to moderate understanding of Brazil's history, since it deals mainly with the political aspects of two of the major slave holding states after abolition (the late 1800's and onwards). This is a great thing for those who want detail--and yes, there are visuals. You can read overviews of Brazil in the encyclopedia; this is a book that can be brought into the classroom--undergraduate and graduate alike.
Good Place to Start.......2004-03-10
Nice beginner book if you are just starting to explore the African diaspora
A ground breaking study in the area of race relations.......1999-07-07
Finally a book that goes beyond, the fact that Brazil is not a racial democracy, and examines how the Afro-Brazilian has fought aganist racism. Dr. Butler shows the various ways that Afro-Brazilians have fought and reacted aganist racism. However, what makes this study so important is the primary research that she used, particularly in the case of Salvador,Bahia;very little has been known about how Afro-Brazilians have reacted to racism in the north-east. This is probably the most important book in the field of Afro-Brazilian studies-a must buy for all those who are interested in the Afro-diaspora in the Americas, and how Black folk have reacted to racism after slavery.

Book Description
This text introduces the field of communication to students who may have little or no background in communication theory. The three overriding goals of the book are to help students understand the pervasiveness of theory in their lives, to demystify the theoretical process, and to help students become more systematic and critical in their thinking about theory. Chapter by chapter approach allows students to understand one theory at a time, staying focused on one theory before learning another theory.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible, obtuse and wordy.......2004-05-15
This book makes learning communication theory far too difficult. The definitions are often incomplete, nosensical, circular, and too abstract.
The printed figures do not help with illustrating the theories that are presented, which is disapointing because pictures could have really helped with teaching the material.
The text is laughable in many places, I actually chuckled outloud at the irony of how difficult it is to understand a communications textbook which purports to be easily understandable.
A side note: Although the supplimentary instructional materials are provided with the intent of aiding teaching communications theory, I believe they do more harm than good. If a student is having trouble understanding the material presented in this book, having their instructor teach from premade PowerPoint files which contain exact wording from the text will not help.
Clear, Concise, Interesting (for theory, that is).......2004-01-05
I was assigned this book in class! Loved it. I hate theory, but this book made sense and was interesting to read. I think the book has great examples that are real life. For those of you who hate theory or don't understand it, this book will help you understand that theory is all around.
Great job!
