Book Description
Large and populous states are becoming major participants in a truly globalized economy. The surge in trade with, and foreign investment in, new partners has coincided with growing tensions in labor markets in Europe, North America, and Japan--in particular a deterioration of the relative position of less-skilled workers in Europe and North America. The main task of this volume--undertaken in chapters on the United States, Japan, and Europe--is to discuss the evidence of a link from globalization to growing tensions in Trilateral labor markets.
The authors conclude that trade with developing countries has played only a small role in these labor market tensions. Looking ahead, they construct--for the United States and Japan--extreme scenarios in which all of manufacturing industry which uses less-skilled labor above a certain threshold in its total employment is wiped out by new competitors. Even then, the growth of export opportunities and reasonable assumptions about substitution between different categories of labor prevent disastrous consequences for the weaker part of the labor force.

Book Description
The destruction or collapse of a social system is bound to be cataclysmic, and the collapse of the communist system which has played itself out at across twenty-eight countries is no exception. The political, social and economic relations which governed these societies are all being simultaneously changed in a fundamental way. In such a context the presence of macroeconomic instability is hardly surprising. Yet, it is the job of economists to try to identify the specific causes of economic phenomena, even when they are caught up in the whirlwind of history. This book, by a participant in the events, examines the causes of very high inflation and large fall in statistically measured output in the post-Communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. It focuses on the fundamental nature of the shift from supply constrained economies (in which there is no unemployment) to ones which are constrained by demand; on the reconstruction of monetary and credit systems; and on the central role of macroeconomic stabilization and generalised liberalisation in creating the basis for private sector growth. Many of the chapters have grown out of policy debates in which the author participated.

Good!.......2005-08-24
I bought this book in a used book shop. The Quigmans kind of reminds me of The Far Side as it has funny pictures and captains like The Far Side. It isn't as good as The Far Side but is pretty cute and I enjoyed reading it.

Music to take you back........2005-09-01
This is a great anthology for those of us who grew up with Carole King or those just discovering her. It's really good for piano players who would like to sound a little rock and rolly. It not only has good piano arrangements but it also has the chords for those who can play by ear and improvize. The arrangements are advanced enough that they will be fun for experienced keyboardists, too.

Book Description
This book chronicles the history of radio as technology and as media. Radio grew from a clumsy, temperamental form of wireless telegraph to a system that is so ubiquitous and easy to use that it has disappeared to users as a technology and became part of the fabric of human existence. This biography charts the growth of the technical end of radio, starting with the history of electricity, and moving through the invention of vacuum tubes, the heterodyne, FM, transistors, and microchips. But the history of radio is not just wires and electricity--it's the story of strange characters, deep thinkers, visionary mystics, hyperactive minds, ambitious souls, power hungry demagogues, and utopian humanists; all of whom strove to make radio into what they thought it should be. In addition, Radio: The Life Story of a Technology looks at the technology as a cultural phenomenon, including the corporate aspects and history of the business of radio. In the middle of the 20th century people saw that radio could be used as an agent of social change, both good and bad. The transition of radio from private corporate device to public news provider to entertainment box back to political tool is at the heart of this work.

Doctor Who Short Trips is a series of themed short story anthologies of new Doctor Who fiction, featuring the Doctor in all of his first eight incarnations. They feature stories written by some of the leading names in Doctor Who, past and present, including Paul Cornell, Gareth Roberts, Christopher H. Bidmead, and Paul Magrs. They didn't always ask to travel with the Doctor. And even if they did, they didn't know what the consequences would be. Were Ian's travels foretold? What paradoxical conundrums faced the Doctor, Charley ,and Will Shakespeare in Ancient Troy? And just how difficult is it to get a job when you can't account for a gap of several years on your CV?
Book Description
SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) is the next big step in evolution for Web services. This book is the first to educate people about SOA, and to introduce them to the technologies that they can use today, prior to the release of Indigo. It will introduce them to a new architecture and will help them realize why Web services are such a big deal (beyond today's popular but very limiting focus on using Web services primarily for RPC method calls). This book will contain a mix of theory combined with ample C# code samples that will show the reader how to implement SOA solutions using a wonderful mix of technologies. It will teach people about SOA today while preparing them for SOA tomorrow. This is applicable to all systems running Windows 2000 or higher.
Customer Reviews:
A great introduction to Web Services.......2007-10-03
In my opinion, you must know a bit of C# to really get everything in this book. But the game is very well written and make a complete intoduction into the Web Services. I only had problems while coding the authentication examples, the rest, worked great. A must have if you are getting into the service oriented architectures.
Good tutorial and reference literature!.......2007-03-08
I bought this book for one purpose. To learn SOA and WSE basics fast.
My background is senior software engineer and I've been working with .Net Web projects but not SOA. I was able to implement a WS Secure conversation between a web client and a web service in two weeks. Both using a common WS Policy document. The book gave me the basics, the understanding and the ability to implement WS Security. Though I recommend also to use the code examples provided by apress.com site related to this book.

When will I learn..........2006-04-13
Poor writing. Poor diagrams. Poor editing. Poor typesetting. Misguided sample code. Misleading title. Inaccurate information. Life is too short to waste your time reading this book when there are so many better titles. Burned by Apress again. When am I going to learn...
A Sorely Needed Book for our Camp - SOA Must Read for C#/.NET.......2005-10-02
This is the only book I am aware of that will show you how to correct all the inherent design issues (in terms of reaching an SOA) in using the 'default' Microsoft implementation of Web Services. It is astounding how many of my consulting customers I see who either don't know the WSE exists or know it exists but are reluctant to introduce change and stick with RPC style intrinsic Web Services in the base .NET releases. They lose SO MUCH and it is my job typically to move them to where this book describes (and I use it daily).
To do SOA correctly, it takes a shift in mindset that Microsoft does not really educate you on. Even the WSE documentation does not cover this. There must be other sources but I have not found them (to be clear I mean with such a Microsoft Focus - there are others but they don't have the details about the WSE 2.0 we need and he even shows how this can be done without the WSE in the beginning of the book - but I recommend using the WSE 1,000%).
For an SOA the XML-Schema is so important for both input and output of your richly defined services. As this book describes, UML is a create starting point (and the best tool I have found is an amazing tool called `Sparx Enterprise Architect' which goes from UML to XSD seamlessly).
1) If you are going to try to use Web Services, consider the SOA approach (they are absolutely not the same. WEB SERVICES != SOA by default)
2) This book will literally walk you through how you can make WEB SERVICES == SOA
3) It is not easy. Many are used to just adding a project and throwing an attribute on a method. You have MUCH more work to do, but the benefits are described in this book and they are well worth the effort unless you are doing trivial things with these technologies.
I know for a fact this will all get easier with VS 2005 (now a release candidate!) but for now, we must resort to these techniques (they are not all THAT bad). I know of at least one company that will make all this much easier (cannot say due to NDA but email me and I will see if I can get permission).
My clients often don't even know where to start, and they also fail to understand the importance of the WS-I for interoperability and what exactly an SOA is. Many believe it is just Web Services. I spend as much time educating as coding. Although this book is not really about interoperability, the WSE 2.0 SP3 today is required to reach WS-I interoperability (see the patterns and practices sample app on this), which is another reason you want this book.
In addition to this book (think in terms of 'Operational' - Code, 'Tactical' - Mid-Level Planning, and 'Strategic' - Longer Term Company Strategy) this is both an Operational and Tactical book. The strategic level leads us to Indigo. Well WSE 2.0 and WSE 3.0 are promised to get us there. So if you are still not using WSE 2.0, wow, just the fact you are not using the TCP channel and loosing all that potential performance is enough. But you are also not on the `train' of compliance Microsoft has made very clear and you are outdated, plain and simple. WS-I compatibility and a true SOA are motivations enough. If you are not using WSE 2.0 today (or 3.0 if you are using VS 2005) then you are loosing massive amounts in 'opportunity cost' and likely real cost.
See my recommend book list for more options and again, feel free to contact me for more info.
Kind Regards,
Damon Carr, CTO
Never judge a book by its cover.......2005-06-23
A very disappointing book. After reading the back cover and flicking through I expected much more.
Despite what you might think the core of the book is actually how to configure security and policy for web-services almost a hundred pages is given to this topic.
Given that WSE is a "plugable" architecture there are no real examples of how to go about plugging in anything. Don't get sucked in like I did by thinking that this book will have some information on showing you how to plug in MSMQ as a transport, as in too many cases in this book this topic is out of scope.
This book should have been called "An Overview of WSE: and the current state of WS standards in .Net".

James Bamford builds his case against America's intelligence agencies from the ground up, which makes for devastating reading not only for his subjects, but for anyone concerned with the nation's security or simply smart use of taxpayer dollars. Indeed, one can't help but cringe as the veteran journalist records the alarming post-Cold War floundering of the C.I.A., N.S.A., Defense Department, and succeeding administrations in the face of burgeoning terrorist threats that culminate with the attack on 9-11. Seemingly caught flatfooted by the demise of the Soviet Union, the U.S. intelligence community stumbles through the 1990s as it becomes institutionally hidebound and sluggish. During relatively peaceful times, its shortcomings, while not unnoticed, remain largely unaddressed. As Bamford sees it, with the arrival of George W. Bush, the situation goes from bad to worse. With the neocons in power, intelligence gathering is corrupted and politicized to create the grounds for going to war with Iraq. While much of what appears here has appeared earlier in works by Joseph Wilson, Richard Clarke, and others, Bamford pulls the loose ends together and adds new reporting to create a wide-ranging yet taut and absorbing expose of an American security apparatus that combines vast power with stunning ineptitude. --Steven Stolder

A Pretext for War is essential reading for anyone concerned about the security of the United States.
Customer Reviews:
A MUST READ!.......2007-08-03
a MUST READ for every American...chronological facts laid out for you so that you can't ignore!
Mostly bunkum!.......2007-01-27
One has to wade through quite a maze of disinformation in order to arrive anything of real value in this palimpsest. But, for those with extraordinary patience, there is some small modicum of value.
Bamford bores the reader at first with a very detailed, and absurd, recapitulation of the government's ridiculous tale relative to the "911" disaters, complete with impossible "cell" phone calls from high up in the atmosphere and implausible reactions on the part of government agencies that simply failed to act. Most of this seems to be intended to portray George Walker Bush as the bumbling fool that he is. We didn't need all this evidence, Mr. Bamford. That case has already been well made.
Finally, near the end, Bamford gets to the thesis: that the "911" disaster was nothing more than a pretext for the Iraq War. One wonders why the reader was taken on such a convoluted path to arrive at such an obvious conclusion. More than anything else, this book appears to be a partisan attack on the absurdity of the Bush administration and its foreign policy. A more factual account would have been more efficacious. We cannot, in good conscience, recommend this book.
What Intelligence failure?.......2006-09-20
It seems to me that Hans Blix and Muhammed al-Baradei correctly reported to us the likely state of Iraq's strategic weaponry and warned us against a preemptive war. The republicans are also using an incorrect definition of weapons of mass distruction. The correct definition of weapons of mass distruction only counts as WMDs those weapons which have at least the potential of killing millions of people. Using this correct definition most chemical weapons and some biologicals are NOT WMDs.
I would also point out that the american attempt to produce a "shock and awe" effect was THEIR use of a terror tactic.
Disappointing.......2006-05-02
The cover of the hardbook advertises "9/11, Iraq, and the abuse of America's intelligence agencies" yet a lot of the book feels like a history lesson. The author has a tendency to provide extensive backgrounds and histories for each and every person, organization, and agency involved in his book. It becomes rather tedious after the first couple of chapters. I can't swear to it but portions of this book appeared in Mr. Bamford's other books. The chapters and sections that mention the NSA are an example.
Overall, I am disappointed with the book and probably will skim the remainder of it.
The power of lies: we all were wrong.......2006-03-29
This book contains the analysis of two events: the 9/11 attacks and the war in Iraq. In both cases the evaluation of the intelligence community is devastating: the 9/11 attacks and the war in Iraq could eventually not be prevented; the first one because of incompetence, and the second one because of the cowardice of the CIA chief, who didn't fight or resign in protest, but chose simply to go along with all the lies.
The step by step description of the 9/11 events follows the official version. E.g., the collapse of Tower 7 of the WTC is due to blown debris which set the steel building on fire. Some official sources spoke of 'demolition'.
For a more critical evaluation of the events I recommend the works of N.M. Ahmed and D.R. Griffin.
Concerning the war in Iraq, the intelligence community knew that Saddam had no WMD and that there was absolutely no link between Saddam, Al-Qaeda and 9/11. But the Bush administration put the CIA under tremendous pressure to find 'something' that could justify a preemptive war. The administration didn't need serious intelligence reports. They wanted the CIA to serve their own agenda: rearrange the map in the Middle East by overthrowing Saddam and put a pro-Israel regime in his place.
When the bogus evidence became available, a massive disinformation campaign was launched in the gagged media in order to deceive the Americam people.
The author's description of the Iraq quagmire is a horror story.
Militarily, the poor, the young, those with the least education, those from small and rural towns paid with their lives, although they tended to vote for Bush.
In Iraq, the use of cluster bombs in residential neighbourhoods is leaving ten of thousands of live bombs in the backyards. 'The US military were killing and maiming the very people it had come to liberate.'
For the author, the regime change in Iraq is not the solution: (quoting T. Hamad) 'For all people in the Arab world, the Palestinian problem is the only problem they have with the US.'
The conclusion of the author is also a question mark: 'It is now clear that the original justification for the Iraq invasion was fraudulent. It was simply a pretext for war long advocated by a small group of hard-line neoconservatives'. 'The question mark to be answered is: How much of a factor support for Israel played in the ultimate decision?'
Quoting N. Guttman in Haaretz:'(there is) new life into the assertion that Israel and not American interests lead to the war in Iraq.'
James Bamford has written a courageous, but immensely sad book full of cynical behaviour.
A must read.

Lancester Pamplets - Elizabeth I and Foreign Policy 1558 - 1603.......2006-06-25
According to the description on the back of this booklet it describes and assesses England's foreign policy during te second half of the sixteenth century. It includes coverage of Elizabeth's relationships with foreign powers, the effect of the Reformation on foreign affairs, Elizabeth's success as a stateswoman and the war with Spain.
The booklet provides ample information about Elizabethan Foreign Policy between 1558 and 1603 and is devided into six chapters each dealing with a particular time frame and events impacting or changing the foreign policy as a result. I would recommend it to readers wanting to gain general knowledge about the subject. Don't expect in-depth information though - there are far better books available on some of the main players who determined and put their stamp on foreign policy under Elizabeth I - be it Sir William Cecil, later Lord Burleigh or his son and successor Sir Robert Cecil, later Earl of Salisbury, Sir Francis Walsingham and most significantly Lord Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex who was all but in title the Queen's Foreign Minister between 1593 when he gained a seat on the Privy Council and the end of 1597.

Book Description
Elizabethan foreign policy was very much the policy of Queen Elizabeth l herself. It was not foreplanned, envisaged whole in advance. It was built up out of her responses to questions and problems posed by her relations with neighboring and, in the case of France and Spain, far more powerful countries. The responses, inspired by consistant instincts and opinions concerning her own country's true interests, grew into a coherent policy.

Book Description
Metaphors of inscription and writing figure prominently in all levels of discourse in and about science. The description of nature as a book written in the language of mathematics has been a common trope since at least the time of Galileo, a metaphor supplemented in our own day by the characterization of DNA sequences as the code for the book of life, decipherable in terms of protein semantic units. An important recent direction in the fields of science and literature studies is to consider such descriptions as more than metaphoric, as revelatory of the processes of signification in science more generally. Nearly everywhere we look, the “semiotic turn” is upon us.
Recent science and technology studies have been characterized by a rich diversity of research directions, manifesting several trends apparently counter to one another. On the one hand stands the rich tradition of detailed microstudies of experiments, instruments, and scientific practice; on the other hand are grouped studies grander in scope, aimed at examining science within the framework of cultural production. This volume of sixteen essays seeks common ground among these different approaches by juxtaposing work from historically focused science and literature studies with work inspired by poststructuralist philosophy and semiotics.
The contributors are Gillian Beer, Lisa Bloom, Robert Brain, Lorraine Daston, Richard M. Doyle, David Gugerli, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, Friedrich Kittler, Timothy Lenoir, Alex Pang, Phillip Prodger, Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, Robin Rider, Brian Rotman, Simon Schaffer, and Bernhard Siegert.

Book Description
Scotland's natural environment is its most treasured asset and the subject of its most vociferous debates. Why have the farms, forests, lochs and hills generated such passionate disagreement? Is it so difficult to reconcile the competing demands of society and nature? Can there really be no acceptable way of integrating the various land uses? These are the questions explored in this book. Written in the light of international thinking in environmental management and of the author's practical experience in the Scottish highlands, it tackles the hottest current debates--land reform, the future of farming, public access, conservation of moorland and birds of prey, the place of forestry, and the control of alien species and red deer--and takes up the challenge of integrating conservation with social and economic objectives. The author also discusses the ethical and philosophical considerations that underlie the practical options. The book is illustrated with photographs and specially prepared maps and diagrams. It is designed for those studying Scotland's environment at undergraduate and graduate level and for those already engaged in farming, forestry, conservation, game sports and rural employment. Equally, the author addresses the wide range of people interested in these fascinating and important issues. They will be as entertained as they are enlightened by the book's congenial tone and consistently clear writing.
