Book Description
Macroeconomics is in disarray. No one approach is dominant, and an increasing divide between theory and empirics is evident.
This book presents both a critique of mainstream macroeconomics from a structuralist perspective and an exposition of modern structuralist approaches. The fundamental assumption of structuralism is that it is impossible to understand a macroeconomy without understanding its major institutions and distributive relationships across productive sectors and social groups.
Lance Taylor focuses his critique on mainstream monetarist, new classical, new Keynesian, and growth models. He examines them from a historical perspective, tracing monetarism from its eighteenth-century roots and comparing current monetarist and new classical models with those of the post-Wicksellian, pre-Keynesian generation of macroeconomists. He contrasts the new Keynesian vision with Keynes's General Theory, and analyzes contemporary growth theories against long traditions of thought about economic development and structural change.

Here is the full story of the meteoric rise of Evanescence, whose unique sound has rejuvenated a music scene overrun with manufactured pop and male-dominated rock. Against all odds, the band's creative brand of music made up of soaring female vocals, hard-hitting guitar, and classically trained piano magically conjured up multi-platinum album sales, two Grammys, and a devoted worldwide fan base. This first biography explores the teenage songwriting partnership forged by lead singer Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody in Little Rock, Arkansas, and how they realized their musical vision years later with the major-label release Fallen. The instant success of "Bring Me to Life," the first of many chart-topping hits, set the band on a relentless concert trek around the globe. Details Evanescence's strong recovery from the abrupt departure of co-founder Moody mid-tour and covers the band's future plans.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty straightforward story on Evanescence ...........2006-08-24
I got this books as a present for my kind who loves Evanescence and has followed in pretty much detail their story and tracking. It provides very good background information and interesting notes on the group.
A must-have for the die-hard fans.
PICTURES ARE WORTH MORE THAN THOUSANDS OF WORDS. .......2006-06-28
This is a really good book for fans of Evanescence and Amy Lee. It has some nice pictures of Amy in it. The written part of the book isn't really anything special. There's nothing unusual about the man's story and there's nothing wrong with that. A person or band doesn't need a story of suffering and starving if their art is as good as that of Evanescence. I got the impression that someone had photos that they wanted to turn into a book to make money and that the writer is just someone who was contracted to write the thing and had no personal interest in the subject matter. Almost everything written has an annoying habits of saying "In SO AND SO MAGAZINE ON SEPT 13, 2002 it was said that...". I give the book five stars for the pictures. If I were reviewing only the written part I would probably give it a 3 star rating.
Excellent book.......2005-08-31
I picked up this book at Hot Topic when i was just browsing. So i bought it. I started reading it the next night, it was well written. I just couldn't put it down because i wanted to know "everything" about my favorite band. They have some great photos too. I read this twice then put some of the pictures up on my wall. It covered almost everything you would want to know about this band, past and present. It was full of great facts that i've never heard before. So i recommend you read this book, its very interesting and if everyone could only read this, it would probably put an end to all the Evanescence rumors.
Something for everyone!.......2005-01-16
I picked up this paperback while staying in Florida. It was hard to find on the shelf because it's actually very small. I paid 12 bucks for it and it was worth every penny.
I'm a knowledgeable fan of Evanescence I was very happy to find a few tidbits here and there I didn't know already. If you're like me, you're tired of reading/hearing "Ben and Amy met at summer camp" and "Bring Me To Life is about this" etc. The book had some great light reading covering the bands humble beginnings all the way thru the last stop of their tour. It's very easy to read and the pictures included are quite nice. I was hoping for some rare images, maybe like some early photos of Ben, Amy and David but no luck there. Most of the photos are recents, in black and white and a few color photos are thrown into the middle of the book.
My favorite part was the timeline in the back. Here the reader can see specific albums, track listings, locations of shows etc. Pick this book up if you like Evanescence, it's like having your own Evanescence scrapbook.
Great Book.......2005-01-07
Great awesome book about Evanescence. The author did a really good job explaining Evanescence's roots, background, history, etc. And there are lots of cool pictures of Amy and the band. Overall, just a really cool book. Defintley recommend to any Evanescence fan.

Actresses and Whores: On Stage and in Society
ASIN: 0415056527 |
Book Description
In Victorian society--rigidly stratified by both income and occupation--performers were drawn from various class backgrounds and enjoyed a unique degree of social mobility. Nevertheless, the living and working conditions of female performers were distinctly different from their male counterparts: fully justifying in social, economic, and gender terms the semantic distinction "actress."
Actresses as Working Women utilizes the methodologies of a number of disciplines--labor history, historical demography, sociology, performance analysis, and literary theory--and a vast amount of primary evidence to investigate actresses' separate and equivocal status. Their segregation and marginalization guaranteed economic insecurity. Their attempts to reconcile sexuality and the female life cycle to a physically demanding, itinerant occupation while under constant public scutiny led to assumptions about their morality that were difficult to overcome. Performance conventions--in both theatre and music hall traditions--that reflected popular pornographic images reinforced this stigma, which was documented in contemporaneous erotic literature and the male-controlled culture of vice that permeated theatrical neighborhoods.
One of the first in-depth feminist studies of the history of theatre,
Actresses as Working Women brings a fresh perspective and voluminous evidence to bear on the study of nineteenth-century theatre.

Controlling the Media.......2005-11-24
Ever since television first illuminated living rooms across America, it has made us laugh and cry, shout with anger and joy, and challenged and changed us with the images it brought us. Slowly, as its technologies have developed over the years so has our dependence on it. Today many of us would reluctantly admit that we don't know what we'd dso without our tvs.
Bob DeMoss, a culture and media expert, describes the possibilities. Combining humor, time-tested advice from 18 years spent studying the medium, the feedback from more than 50 families who agreed to turn off their TV's for a month, he holds out hope for regaining control of the television in your home. Thought-provoking daily readings that address our relationship with TV from a biblical perspective will motivate, instruct, and sustain your family if you take the "great escape"challenge. DeMoss doesn't call for a permanent boycott; instead, he invites your family to find a balance in your viewing and reciscover the riches real life has to offer. -- from book's back cover.
Book Description
A network is a system of two or more computers that are connected in some manner (you have lots of choices about the "manner"). Each computer on the network has access to the files and peripheral equipment (printers and modems) on all the other computers on the network.
Using multiple computers is much easier if you have a network. You don't have to remember which computer you were using when you started that letter to Uncle Harry because you can just reach across the network to finish it using any computer in the house. A home network allows you to do the work you have to do better and more efficiently. You can benefit from a network if you
- Use PCs that run either Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows XP
- Want to share computers on a network, whether they're desktop computers or laptops
- Have more people in the household than computers, so more than one person may use any single computer
Home Networking For Dummies isn't a novel, so you don't have to start at page one and read every chapter in order – you can't spoil the ending. This book is meant to be digested on a subject-by-subject basis. Each chapter is self-contained, covering a specific subject. You'll gain insight into:
- Planning and installing your home network
- Performing some software tasks to fine-tune your network
- Using your network to access or print files from other computers
- Keeping your network safe from viruses and intruders
- Preparing for disaster by keeping your computers healthy and making sure you don't lose your data if a computer dies
Creating a network is satisfying, fun, and incredibly useful. Have a good time. You're on the cutting edge of computer technology. By reading this book, you prove that you are a networking nerd – and that's a compliment.

Not the Greatest Solution for Home Networking.......2007-03-16
Ok, I admit I'm a dummy when it comes to wireless networking. This book, overall was not very informative. Many times the step by step instructions provided were difficult to follow and didn't match up well with what was shown on my PC screen. There is a ton of "fluff" in this book, I wish they would just cut to the chase and provide clearer step-by-step instructions. This book really did not help me much.
Another Essential Dummies Book!.......2004-09-29
I bought this one mainly because all of my Windows books lacked the kind of plain language instructions I needed to help get my home network up and running. This one covers everything from installing ethernet cards to file sharing, network printing, mapping drives, network security, and just about anything else you can think of. It's only 335 pages, including the glossary and index, but it feels like a 1,000 pages worth of valuable information. I still refer to this indispensable guide whenever some unexpected event arises. And that's one of the great things about these Dummies books. You don't necessarily have to read them from cover to cover, instead you can use the table of contents, or the index, to zero in on those areas where you need the most help. Home Networking for Dummies is well-organized and written in a language that is not intimidating for those of us who are not IT professionals, but would like the same level of results.
Home Networking - made easy!.......2003-11-24
Thanks to author Kathy Ivens for making setting up our home networks so easy! Actually, we used it for setting up a small business network too, so it served multiple purposes. I knew I might need some help getting the networks set up, but I was most concerned about security. I really have no worries now. This book explained how to ensure security...and why!
Book Description
This definitive history of one of the fiercest battles of World War II describes the siege of Budapest in unprecedented detail. Both Stalin and Hitler demanded victory at all costs, and the cost was extreme: 80,000 Soviet troops, 38,000 German and Hungarian soldiers, and 38,000 Hungarian civilians perished. The book provides the first full account of this shocking battle.
“As a military history [The Siege of Budapest] is unrivaled. . . . Magisterial.”—John Lukacs, New York Review of Books
“An exceedingly dramatic book, filled with fascinating stories, some of them even humorous, and with heart-rending accounts of suffering, limitless cruelty, and amazing decency.”—István Deák, New Republic
"Ungváry has written a dramatic, gripping history of this siege, filling a gap in WWII history."—Choice
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully written history.......2007-06-25
I enjoyed this book cover to cover. Refreshingly free of of the snotty professorial moral outrage present in so many English WW2 histories. Not that the author doesn't convey the horror wrought by both Germans and Russians on the Hungarians- he does so in a calm step by step description of this gigantic siege. I have but two nits to pick out- in this book the siege of Stalingrad is said to have lasted 76 days vs. 108 days for the siege of Budapaest but in real life by any measure the siege of Stalingrad lasted 5+ months or around 150 days. I think the author has confused Operation Saturn (which started in late November 1942) with the whole Stalingrad siege (which started in late August 1942). Lastly- in one section the author states that the execution of Jews down by the Danube River was the most overt and largest mass atrocity in Europe since the early stages of Barbarossa but I think Ukranians, Byelorussians, Yugoslavs and even Czechs would beg to differ on that point. All in all though this is an engrossing and beautifully researched piece of history- far superior to recent works about Berlin and Stalingrad...
Amazing horror.......2007-05-09
When I first started reading this book I was put off to some extent by the dry recitation of the villages , then cities and finally streets that fell before the Soviet onslaught. I kept thinking that better, and more regular, maps and street plans would help me "watch" the events taking place. The narative would have benefited tremendously from an introductory description of the city and its key sites - at no stage did I become "acquainted" with Budapest. Accompanying this "dryness" was a description of warfare that just numbs you with the agony of it all (it reminded me in some ways of the stark realism of "Blackhawk Down" - bullets and explosions and bits of flesh flying all over the place)... And then came the Breakout... I was previously unaware of how dramatic the events around Budapest in 1944-45 really were; it's strange how little is actually reported or written! The futility and sheer horror, of lives wasted and blind ideologies followed, ultimately rises to the surface... and leaves you filled with amazement and horror.
Budapest.......2007-03-14
The book pays little regard to the wider context of the events it deals with, the absolute idiocy of the German command to dispatch a large share of its remaining resources to the battle for Budapest while the Soviets were ready to take Berlin. The maps are illegible. There is no map showing the wider theater of operations. Some of the horrors are described well. Overall an uneven history.
First Rate.......2006-10-10
This is a first rate monograph. It is part of the new work being done on WWII since the opening of the Soviet & East European archives, which now bely the myth that the Battle of the Bulge was Germany's last gasp. This book discusses a serious German offensive, and serious battle, that took place in 1945. Interesting that the offensive had some degree of success before being overwhelmed. Even in its death throes the German Army could pack a real punch. I really like the fact that we are finally in an era where books can be written that give an accurate view of WWII in Europe- giving the War in the east its long deprived attention.
Important WWII documentation.......2006-07-08
The battle for and siege of Budapest has not received the attention it deserves and this deficit was made up by Ungvary. Inasmuch as I participated in the early stages of the battle (Panzer Grenadier Division Feldherrnhalle) up until December, 22 1944 the book was of great personal interest. Although I had the good fortune not to be caught up in that cauldron, after complete encirclement, which led to the annihilation of our division, I found Ungvary's descriptions to have been accurate, with some minor mistakes. For instance: Table 3 lists the Felherrnhalle in the southern theater of operations while we were in the North around Hatvan as depicted in the map.The battle for Vienna lasted only a little over a week, rather than 31 days, because Hitler's orders were disobeyed and the major portions of the army were withdrawn to spare the city Budapest's fate.
That the lack of Soviet infantry at the beginning of the offensive delayed the taking of Budapest was new information. This is a fact our war planners should take cognicanze of. Tanks and planes alone don't win wars. The behavior of the Soviet troops was also depicted correctly as experienced personally during their stay in Vienna and other parts of Austria. All in all a very worthwhile contribution to the history of WWII.

Book Description
In his enduring study of Spanish-speaking Californians--a group that includes both native-born Californians, or Californios, and immigrants from Mexico--Leonard Pitt charts one of the earliest chapters in the state's ethnic history, and, in the process, he sheds light on debates and tensions that continue to this day. In a new foreword for this edition, Ramón A. Gutiérrez discusses the shaping and reception of the book and also views this classic work in light of recent scholarship on California and ethnic history.

Decline of the Californios: A Social History of the Spanish-Speaking Californias, 1846-1890.......2005-09-06
Wonderful genealogical source for those with ties to the "Californios"...great reading for anyone interested in early California history as well.
Classic California - Here We Come!.......2000-12-28
Pitt's history of the decline of the Californios is an extremely important record of California's past. Few contemporary Californian's are familiar with the rugged settlers who came to this place and created a society of their own. Largely abandoned by the Spanish and then Mexican overseers, robbed by the invading Americanos, the Californios left their indelible mark upon us. their influence is subtle now, but we still live in the various "ranchos" they founded and ranched. This is a very accessible and well-written piece of scholarship. It is simple enough to qualify as a popular history, well researched enough to be taken seriously in academia.
it was informative but with so many names,a bit confusing.......1999-05-21
pitt certainly gives us a descriptive account of life in California before the gold rush and after. his referring to so many names and families did make the whole story of the people a little confusing.

In this slender volume, Stephen Jay Gould addresses three questions about the millennium with his typical combination of erudition, warmth, and whimsy: As a calendrical event, what is the concept of a millennium and how has its meaning shifted over time? How did the projection of Christ's 1,000-year reign become a secular measure? And when exactly will the millennium begin--January 1, 2000, or January 2, 2001?
"Our urge to know is so great, but our common errors cut so deep. You just gotta love us," he states disarmingly in the preface. "And you gotta view misguided millennial passion as a primary example of our uniqueness and our absurdity--in other words, of our humanity." Gould's own curiosity about time and calendars was triggered by a 1950 issue of Life magazine, which cut the century in half with its evaluation of what had happened and its prediction of things to come, propelling his third-grade mind to the year 2000. In Questioning the Millennium, Gould promises to make no predictions (other than "an orgy of millennial books"); court no millennial epiphanies; and put forth no theories on the collective angst that typically accompanies a century's end. Instead, he answers the millennial questions which, for him, represent the intersection of undeniable reality (i.e., natural fact) and human interpretation. Gould's questions and learned answers, weaving many historical and scientific facts, are a loving inquiry into the human need for order in a vast and teeming universe.
Book Description
In this new edition of
Questioning the Millennium, best-selling author Stephen Jay Gould applies his wit and erudition to one of today's most pressing subjects: the significance of the millennium.
In 1950 at age eight, prompted by an issue of Life magazine marking the century's midpoint, Stephen Jay Gould started thinking about the approaching turn of the millennium. In this beautiful inquiry into time and its milestones, he shares his interest and insights with his readers. Refreshingly reasoned and absorbing, the book asks and answers the three major questions that define the approaching calendrical event. First, what exactly is this concept of a millennium and how has its meaning shifted? How did the name for a future thousand-year reign of Jesus Christ on earth get transferred to the passage of a secular period of a thousand years in current human history? When does the new millennium really begin: January 1, 2000, or January 1, 2001? (Although seemingly trivial, the debate over this issue tells an intriguing story about the cultural history of the twentieth century.) And why must our calendars be so complex, leading to our search for arbitrary regularity, including a fascination with millennia? This revised edition begins with a new and extensive preface on a key subject not treated in the original version.
As always, Gould brings into his essays a wide range of compelling historical and scientific fact, including a brief history of millennial fevers, calendrical traditions, and idiosyncrasies from around the world; the story of a sixth-century monk whose errors in chronology plague us even today; and the heroism of a young autistic man who has developed the extraordinary ability to calculate dates deep into the past and the future.
Ranging over a wide terrain of phenomena--from the arbitrary regularities of human calendars to the unpredictability of nature, from the vagaries of pop culture to the birth of Christ--Stephen Jay Gould holds up the mirror to our millennial passions to reveal our foibles, absurdities, and uniqueness--in other words, our humanity.
Customer Reviews:
"Nothing ages faster than relevance".......2006-07-12
(To quote John Meier) and it is ashame too because this is a wonderful book with lots of interesting bits, sardonic humor and even spelling tips. This book is too much fun to have it drop out of existence because we won't have to worry about the end of time for another thousand years -- or so!
the millennium question unsolved.......2004-07-13
In his lively book Stephen Jay Gould offers a lot of fascinating material as to how the millennium question has been treated with in modern times. But when it comes to the fundamental matter, that is to the establishment of the Chistian numbering of years in the 6th century, Gould commits the all too common mistake to believe he can solve a historical question by common sense. He should have taken his time to look into the sources at hand concerning Dionysius Exiguus and Beda Venerabilis. He would then have detected that the millennium question is of an even more intricate nature than he had imagined, and in particular has something to do with the calculation of the full moon.
A joy to read.......2003-08-14
A joy to read. Gould makes a normally dry and tastless topic, humourous, and enjoyable. I loved the book, and everthing else by Gould I've ever read.
Questioning the Millennium.......2002-02-23
Stephen Jay Gould is entertaining. His work Questioning the Millennium is that questioning, but entertaining. I like Gould as an author and his essays are thought provoking.
This work is no different. Complex calendars and the idea of a millennium and how it effects us as a whole. A whole host of ideas brought to us from Gould's questioning mind.
This is a rather short work of essays, but no less provoking. As with all of Gould's essays... either you like them or despise them, idiosyncrasies and all.
Nonetheless this is entertaining.
A Joyous Quest In Search Of The Millenium.......2001-09-05
Without a doubt, this is one of the thinner volumes in Gould's prolific canon of fine scientific writing. Once more we are blessed with Gould's excellent erudition and prose, looking at the concept of a millenium from religious, historical and scientific perspectives. Although Gould does not give a definitive answer as to when the current millenium begins, he does acknowledge that traditionalists would regard 2001 as the start of the 21st Century and the third millenium of the Christian Era. Anyone interested in a joyous, intriguing look on the notion of a millenium should not miss this slender tome.
