I purchased this book because I have no idea what it is I'd like to do with my life. I am only one year out of college and am working in a job I most certainly do not enjoy. I was hoping this book could give me some insight into what it is I would enjoy, but instead it focuses on how to change jobs later in life. I am not a Baby Boomer who has worked at the same company for 20 years and yearns for a change. So while this book may be helpful to people who have been in the work world longer, it did very little to help me find my passion.

This is a concisely written career book that doesn't waste your time and invites you in even for scary stuff like self-assessment. If you believe that 'real jobs' have not lived up to their promise, you should check out this book. Also, the author, Julie Jansen, is highly responsive to email questions and sincere about helping those of us seeking something more than a paycheck.

A book like this is as good as the reader. In order to find one self one must look inward and that takes a little work, maybe even more than a little. Julie Jansen's book is a great help in helping the reader start that search and she then guides the reader to the direction he or she must take. Does the book guarantee a new career? No, I don't think so but if the reader works at it, it can come.It probably will. Julie Jansen's Guide is as good as a book like this can get. It is then up to the reader to make use of it. That's the work part. I like the book very much. Anyone willing to work to impove their lives will like it too.

This book was not what I thought at all. I thought it would help me figure out what line of work I would be best suited for. Instead, there were just random self exploration questions which didn't help me know if I would be better suited to be an accountant or zoologist.

If you would like specific employment/career "what would I really enjoy doing" answers, don't get this book.

In this now out of print volume, Bantock explores the spoken word. For anyone who has enjoyed the visual stimuli of the Griffin & Sabine books, or the mesmerizing narrative of The Venitian' Wife, or the Forgetting Room. The poetry calls to mind a more off-beat Shel Silverstein. Highly recommended.

I can't believe that those who are putting down this book have gone through much of a crisis in their lives. Having gone through the fire myself with losing a father, nephew, and son in addition to illnesses and financial troubles, I found this book to be very inspirational. This may be because Joan was echoing what I have come to believe on my own, but sharing it with the world takes a huge amount of courage. I never cared much about her as a comedienne but a person's work does not necessarily reflect who they are inside. I felt very sorry for her when her husband committed suicide and, at the time, I remember wondering if she was just going to shrink into herself and go off on her own to lick her wounds. Well, she didn't and I say, bravo, Joan! Edgar is gone but you and Melissa are still here and to keep plugging away at life takes strength. I have had so many people ask me how I go on and say they couldn't do it. Well, you have two choices: you either give up or you go on. We are big on humor in our family and a bit of black humor does come out now and then. I am just very careful as to who I allow to hear it. You need to separate Joan from her work to get what she is saying in this book. And, if you can do so, and if you can learn from it, you will go on and you will be stronger. Those who nitpick specifics like decorating your house and all will be well are totally missing the point. What she is saying is to find what makes you feel better and get up off your bum and do it. Don't sit and wallow in self-pity and pain. Believe me, when a loved one is no longer there in your life, just vegetating can be SO attractive. It takes a huge amount of strength just to get out of bed in the morning. Who says we aren't supposed to laugh after someone dies? My son loved to laugh and to not do so would be to dishonor his memory. I know he is out there laughing with us just as Joan's Edgar is applauding her efforts to get on with her life.

Book full of INCOMPLETE explenations of excel concepts.......2007-10-03

this book is good, if you already have years of experience with excel. It is horrible if you are learning it for the first time. These authors know the subject well, but struggle to clearly articulate that information to people who don't know excel well. I highly recomend trying any book except this one or any others from these authors. They do know excel but they don't know how to explain it for those who don't.

Sawyer knows his subject. He is a master of Chinese warfare and culture. He even teaches you how to pronounce some common Chinese words that we in the west always mispronounce.

The book is great. It covers a lot --- not just The Art of War, though that's included. It is a complete study of the Chinese strategies of war and I recommend it to those interested in this topic.

Hope that helps.

My one complaint about this book is that it uses the Wade-Giles transliteration rather than Pinyin, which is what everyone, including China, is using. Wade-Giles is now over 35 years outmoded, and can be very confusing for the uninitiated. Compare Ssu-ma I (Wade-Giles) with Sima Yi (Pinyin). Would you know that they're the same bloke? (If you do, bravo.) I assume this speaks to the age of the translation rather than an editorial choice, but it's pretty annoying that they didn't update it.

If you think you might like this book, but want more of a story than essays/discourses, I recommend 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms.' It's very long, but well-loved in most regions of Asia, and with good reason. Also, search for Zhuge Liang's commentary on 'The Art of War.' It's all on Amazon.

WHAT ARE THE NAMES OF THE OTHER SIX BOOKS

An engaging book.......2004-03-02

I first saw this book at my public library, and loved it. (Evidentally someone else loved it too, 'cause it wandered off and left a few years later.) It holds a great list of books.

Sun Tzu's "Art of War" is in there, but I especially like Tao Tai Kung (or "The secret teachings of the Tai Kung") The most entertaining thing about this work is that it is a beautiful example of a different world view. It was an excellent introduction to an entire philosophy.
(look for surprising parallels twixt this and Adam Smith's "...Wealth of Nations", with an eastern perspective.)

An oustanding addition to any library!.......2001-07-24

In considering Ralph Sawyer's translation of "The Seven Military Classics of Ancient China" one must look at the work from two angles. First, one must consider the quality of the translation, and how well the author has set the historical stage for the piece. Second, one must consider the pieces themselves, and their pertinence to modern strategic thinking.

Regarding the first issue, Sawyer has done a superb job in both his translation, and in his historical research. The prose is easy to read and understand, but the essential, almost poetic, essence of the original language has not been sacrificed. Furthermore, each piece is prefaced by a brief, but detailed, overview of the work including a biography of the author, or possible authors, and a synopsis of the historical context in which the work was created. In addition, the book is heavily footnoted, which allows the reader to fully comprehend each piece, without the primary texts being chopped up.

Regarding the second angle, I was genuinely astonished by how pertinent theses works are to modern military thinking. For such primitive (chronologically, not intellectually) works, they do a superb job of capturing the key elements of strategic thinking: maneuver, logistics, terrain, combined arms and command hierarchy. Moreover, they are extremely sophisticated in their consideration of Grand Strategy and the mobilization of the population. While these works are by no means a blue print for a modern army (the codes of conduct are draconian, to say the least), they undoubtedly provide a framework for the analysis/planning of modern operations.

This is truly a superb work that captures both the philosophical and the practical aspects of some of the most ancient books on the planet. Furthermore, it is a fascinating look at ancient Chinese history. It is truly a must read for anyone interested in military theory or international relations, particularly with China once again ascendant on the world stage.

Important and alarming book.......2005-06-26

This is a very good book that deserves a higher sales ranking and a better review than it has at the moment. What Smith does is compile a very eclectic set of martyr stories, illustrating the facts that (1) not all martyrs are religiously motivated and (2) not all martyrs are nice people. Some ARE blood-thirsty killers. And it is not the cause that makes someone a martyr. It is two important things: absolute certainty that the martyr is right and everyone else is wrong, and a belief that martyrdom somehow makes the cause more noble. Both of these facts are scary.
As Smith states more than once, the martyr is the ultimate egotist: he/she is right, the world is wrong, and he/she is showing the world something with his/her self-sacrifice. But that cannot be true: there have been lots of martyrs for lots of causes--in fact, even diametrically opposed causes. The Allies who died in World War II could call themselves martyrs for freedom, and the Nazis who died could call themselves martyrs for Nazism or Germany. Who decides who is a martyr...and what cause is noble?
The martyr is in the additional tricky position of wanting and needing to die without APPEARING to want to die. That is just suicide. The martyr must think that death is perhaps avoidable, and also that death will mean a greater success than life could have accomplished. It is a fine line to walk, one that ultimately not only fails but is contradictory.
People who respect martyrs, or who want to be martyrs, should read this book. Also, read my new "Violence and Culture" (Wadsworth 2005), that puts martyrdom and other forms of ideological violence in perspective.
And remember, terrorists often think of themselves as martyrs, and martyrs often think of the ones who kill them as terrorists.

Author Shows Martyrdoom Takes Ego, and Some Preparation.......2003-07-18

Lacey Baldwin Smith has crafted an engaging book that investigates great martyrs through the centuries. Although the book is subtitled, "The Story of Martyrdom in the Western World," it is rather a careful review of primarily English speaking "martyrs", and the events that lead up to their demise.

Some of the greats, such as Thomas Becket, do not bear well to close scrutiny. Indeed, some across as ravenous murderers: John Brown, in particular, is revealed to be little better than a common terrorist. But many of these individuals had great stage presence and oratory power they used to their advantage when finally put before the docket. Many also had an incredible ego and were incapable of understanding their opponents concerns or views. And not a few wanted martyrdom and forced their opponents' hands to achieve their goal.

The author's selection of martyrs (because he focuses upon English speakers) is a bit uneven. However, the author's short digression into martyrs of the Holocaust was interesting and ethically valuable.

The author provides photos or illustrations of the main protagonists which help to imagine them in more human light. The endnotes and index are excellent, and the writing itself is entertaining if a bit caustic on occasion. Omitted is much discussion of the political campaigns that helped these fools and traitors be designated as martyrs. Despite this, Smith has created a unique, fun, and educational book you're sure to enjoy.
