This book is written for technical people. The overall tone is dull and pedantic. The contents will be difficult to follow for those who do not have mathematical or programming background.

Anyone who has an overall understanding of the EMV specifications will have very little use for the material in this book. There is nothing of note with respect to specific card schemes.

Business people can get much of the non-technical information in the book for free from other sources.

I found this book very useful in teaching undergraduate elementary and secondary band methods. As indicated in the table of contents, a variety of topics important to successful music teaching are discussed. The author did not include basic materials that should be covered in applied methods classes. Beyond a given breadth of knowledge in the content area, pre-service teachers need to know how to get along in the real world of day-to-day teaching. Walker provides eight chapters (out of"~ fourteen) on leadership and basic organization."~ wrong with this idea, he does not emphasize the fact that groups of students do not always possess the maturity to make this system work effectively. He is somewhat critical of the manipulative style, which can be effective without being despotic, and says nothing about using it as a tool for teaching participatory administration. Leadership and administration are the umbrellas for ensuing topics."~ several issues significant to young teachers just out of college who are anxious to demonstrate to the world how much they have learned. For example, change simply for the sake of change is not an effective educational policy; and there are some comments that may be thought but should not be spoken regarding one's predecessor. Some topics such as curriculum, lesson planning, and music selection and programming are discussed only briefly or not at all. But, Teaching Music does provide a solid point of departure for the journey toward effective music teaching.

Roger Wilmut is a great chronicler of 20th Century British comedy. All his books are worth reading, and this one-- a concise, well-written guide to the BBC's peerless Goon Show-- is no exception. Meticulous research and intelligent evaluation all in one package.

A bit dry, but an essential reference for fanatics.......2000-01-10

I first bought this as a spotty teenage goon fan in the late 1970s. It's still probably the best systematic guide to the show, carefully listing the shows by name, and providing the alternative names when they were not coherently announced. What I particularly enjoyed was his analysis of the characters - the tendency of them to pair up [with the notable exeception of Bloodnok] and the decline of Moriarty as the shows progressed. He also gives due regard to the importance of Secombe/Seagoon in the mix - something ofen overlooked by fans. Wilmut writes well, if a little dryly at times. The book could have done with more anecdotes about the show - a lack which indicates an absence of input from the principal participants. It's now about 20 years since it was first published, and the book probably does need an update. But this is still the most essential guide to a show that revolutionised comedy, even if the humour has now dated somewhat.

Decent book.......2002-03-01

As a programmer new to RPG 4 and programming for the AS/400, I needed help with subfiles. This book proved easy to read (I can't say I've read it through, but enough to get what I needed) and there are lots of helpful code examples. I used the sample program for a page-at-time subfile application almost verbatim to get started on one of my programs, which saved a considerable amount of time and effort. Overall this book has been quite useful for me.

Book really explains subfiles in terms anyone can understand. The CD/ROM has sample code that you can use immediately as "models" to develop your own programs. Author does an excellent job of explaining how subfiles work. But if you are like me, you will develop several subfile "skeleton" programs for your own future use. That's where the examples can really help...

This is THE subfile book for AS/400 RPG programmers.

Mr. Vandever approaches the subject with a sense of humor, lots of examples, and excellent technique. The examples are written in ILE RPG IV (RPG III programmers will find the book useful, as well), and do a nice job of showing off recent RPG IV enhancements by incorporating them in the examples.

I have developed lots of subfile programs, and read the other books on the subject. This is by far the best treatment of the subject that I have seen.

The Pacific War from the homefront........2007-08-28

For World War II history buffs, this book is an excellent view from the eyes of Japanese Americans. They were amazing people in how they dealt with the situation.
One section of the book gets a little bogged down covering the issue of "Question 28", and I passed over the poetry, but beyond that it is a great read.

Only What We Could Carry: The Japanese American Internment Experience.......2007-08-25

I thought I knew a good bit about the internment of Japanese-American citizens during World War II before I read this book, but I was badly mistaken. This is a very good gathering of different sources: journal excerpts, recollections, legal documents, photos, poetry, ect., that give a complete and horrible picture of these events. The parallels to an unfortunate number of things happening currently in our government/society are a real demonstration of the adadge that if we don't learn from history we are condemned to repeat it.

Only what we could carry, edited by Lawson Fusao Inada, is a compilation of photography, drawings, poems, personal stories, legal documents, and memoirs of the Japanese Americans that were put into internment by the American government after the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor. Not only did this book include the interneesEexperience and their feelings, the interneesEAmerican friends and the media who were on the government side were included.

Some of the interesting facts in this book were the propaganda images. One that really struck me as an interesting propaganda was titled, "How to spot a Jap.E In a cartoon style, it mentions the differences between a Chinese and a Japanese. The drawings are put there so that it'll be easy for the public to differentiate them. I'm Japanese and I found this propaganda amusing. By just looking or reading the propaganda, it gives the reader the history and portrays how so many Americans were narrow minded and easily persuaded.

This book has an impressive collection of accounts from various sources and manages to touch upon any significant Japanese American experience during World War II.
I purchased this book for its coverage of the Nisei 100th and 442nd batalions, and was impressed at the varied perspectives included. From an excerpt from Daniel Inouye's account to a reflection by a concentration camp survivor liberated by men of the 442nd, Only What We Could Carry certainly covers the map.
A good source for those studying any aspect of Japanese American life during the war, and an excellent one for those studying the subject in general.

Only What We Could Carry provides an important account of the Japanese American internment experience after the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor. Personal documents, art and propaganda are presented in a title which captures the camp experience in a series of personal autobiographical revelations. Highly recommended.

This biography tells the story of one of the most influential figures of the twelfth century, Eleanor of Aquitaine, successively queen of France and of England. Her marriage at fifteen to the young Louis VII was later annulled on the grounds of consanguinity. After her divorce, she married Henry II, then Count of Anjou and Duke of Normandy. Henry became king of England in 1154 and Eleanor thereby became queen of potentially the most powerful leader in Europe, whose empire stretched from the Scottish borders to the Pyrenees. Eleanor bore Henry eight children, two of them future kings of England - Richard (the Lionheart) and John. Her behavior and political motives have always been open to question, not least her siding with her children against Henry. Although their revolt collapsed, Eleanor was kept in close custody in England for much of the next sixteen years. Then, after Henry's death, she lent her unflagging support to his successors Richard and, later, John. In tracing Eleanor's life story, Professor Owen examines her part in public affairs during the reigns of Louis, Henry, Richard and John, and her role as a literary and cultural patron at the time of the great intellectual revival know as the Twelfth-Century Renaissance.
