Bill Bryson follows his Appalachian amble, A Walk in the Woods, with the story of his exploits in Australia, where A-bombs go off unnoticed, prime ministers disappear into the surf, and cheery citizens coexist with the world's deadliest creatures: toxic caterpillars, aggressive seashells, crocodiles, sharks, snakes, and the deadliest of them all, the dreaded box jellyfish. And that's just the beginning, as Bryson treks through sunbaked deserts and up endless coastlines, crisscrossing the "under-discovered" Down Under in search of all things interesting.
Bryson, who could make a pile of dirt compelling--and yes, Australia is mostly dirt--finds no shortage of curiosities. When he isn't dodging Portuguese man-of-wars or considering the virtues of the remarkable platypus, he visits southwest Gippsland, home of the world's largest earthworms (up to 12 feet in length). He discovers that Australia, which began nationhood as a prison, contains the longest straight stretch of railroad track in the world (297 miles), as well as the world's largest monolith (the majestic Uluru) and largest living thing (the Great Barrier Reef). He finds ridiculous place names: "Mullumbimby Ewylamartup, Jiggalong, and the supremely satisfying Tittybong," and manages to catch a cricket game on the radio, which is like
listening to two men sitting in a rowboat on a large, placid lake on a day when the fish aren't biting; it's like having a nap without losing consciousness. It actually helps not to know quite what's going on. In such a rarefied world of contentment and inactivity, comprehension would become a distraction.
"You see," Bryson observes, "Australia is an interesting place. It truly is. And that really is all I'm saying." Of course, Bryson--who is as much a travel writer here as a humorist, naturalist, and historian--says much more, and does so with generous amounts of wit and hilarity. Australia may be "mostly empty and a long way away," but it's a little closer now. --Rob McDonald
Book Description
Every time Bill Bryson walks out the door, memorable travel literature threatens to break out. His previous excursion along the Appalachian Trail resulted in the sublime national bestseller A Walk in the Woods. In A Sunburned Country is his report on what he found in an entirely different place: Australia, the country that doubles as a continent, and a place with the friendliest inhabitants, the hottest, driest weather, and the most peculiar and lethal wildlife to be found on the planet. The result is a deliciously funny, fact-filled, and adventurous performance by a writer who combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiousity.
Despite the fact that Australia harbors more things that can kill you in extremely nasty ways than anywhere else, including sharks, crocodiles, snakes, even riptides and deserts, Bill Bryson adores the place, and he takes his readers on a rollicking ride far beyond that beaten tourist path. Wherever he goes he finds Australians who are cheerful, extroverted, and unfailingly obliging, and these beaming products of land with clean, safe cities, cold beer, and constant sunshine fill the pages of this wonderful book. Australia is an immense and fortunate land, and it has found in Bill Bryson its perfect guide.
Download Description
Compared to his Australian excursions, Bill Bryson had it easy on the Appalachian Trail. Nonetheless, Bryson has on several occasions embarked on seemingly endless flights bound for a land where Little Debbies are scarce but insects are abundant (up to 220,000 species of them), not to mention the crocodiles.
Taking readers on a rollicking ride far beyond packaged-tour routes, In a Sunburned Country introduces a place where interesting things happen all the time, from a Prime Minister who was lost at sea while swimming at a Victoria beach to Japanese cult members who managed to set off an atomic bomb unnoticed on their 500,000-acre property. Leaving no Vegemite unsavored readers will accompany Bryson as he dodges jellyfish while learning to surf at Bondi Beach, discovers a fish that can climb trees, dehydrates in deserts where the temperatures leap to 140degreeF, and tells the true story of the rejected Danish architect who designed the Sydney Opera House.
Published just in time for the Olympics, In a Sunburned Country provides a singularly intriguing, wonderfully wacky take on a glorious, adventure-filled locale.
Customer Reviews:
Don't be a drongo, enjoy this book.......2007-10-21
Bill Bryson loves and hates Australia. It's sunny climes and lush hills on the Gold Coast, flat open seemingly endless expanse of desert, and then another wonderful coast all serve to fill him with prose of praise for the place, and remarks on some of the stranger aspects of Ozzie life.
The people's charm is pleasantly placed next to the strangeness of a land where a Prime Minister can walk into the sea and no one hear from him again. Or that they built a city to house all the politicians, filled it with fantastic gardens, and yet have no idea how the government actually works.
The book follow Bryson on his trip around and across the southern-most continent and is chock-a-block full of interesting stories, people, and places. His usual wit and sarcasm does seem to fall off a bit, but (having been there I can say) that has more to do with the place than the writer. It's almost impossible to find nasty things to say about Oz.
If you've even been to Aussie-land you'll love this book for the memories it evokes, and if you have never been consider this book as a fantastic rainy-day travel guide and let your imagination sore (then get down to your travel agent and book a flight ;) ).
Gotta love a a place where everything wants to kill you........2007-10-09
It's obvious in reading this book that Bryson fell head over heels for the land down under. What makes him such a great travel writer is that, in love or not, he never resorts to gushing. He maintains the dry wit and eye for oddities that are his trademarks. I particularly liked the recurring bits about sharks and other potential agents of death. Bryson shows us a country full of interesting, likable and hardworking people; a harsh country not without problems, but a gosh-darned interesting place. You'll laugh a lot reading this, but without laughing at anyone. That's a difficult thing to pull off, and Bryson does it. His affection for the place is palpable. This is a great armchair travel book.
a great read.......2007-09-22
This is a great book, in my opinion. Bryson makes this tale both informative and funny. I had at least a few laugh-out-loud moments with this book. After I finished, I felt almost as if I had just taken a trip to Australia (never been there yet)- def the sign of a good writer. If you've never read Bill Bryson before, take a chance on this one - you won't regret it.
Everything will kill you.......2007-09-20
This should be required reading for anybody heading to Australia. He is an astute observer of human behavior, and relates his findings in the most humorous way. His description of the game of cricket is the most accurate and hilarious I've ever read, and his constant reminders of how everything in Australia will kill you provides nice continuity throughout the book.
Masterful........2007-09-06
What stands out about this book for me is that it stays with me. I often find myself referring back to it, telling people stories I read in it, chuckling about something in it. It helps that I appreciate Bryson's humor, his hypochondria and morbidity and his delight in the ridiculous. And since it is a travel book, its only fair to say that since I read his book, I went to see some of the things he saw, and I mean to see more of them.

The Australians - Defying Definition
Peter Luck
Manufacturer: Lansdowne Press
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: B000M51SB8 |
Product Description
If we look beyond the romantic image of the typical Australian being a lean and laconic bushman, as big as the Outback and as dry as a drought, there emerges a diverse character, who defies definition. Australians are a remarkable hybrid, and the collection of characters in The Australians is Peter Luck's celebration of the special breed of people to be found in this young and extraordinary nation. Mostly Australia is a forward-looking country, but our character is moulded by memories. We cling fondly to the few traditions we have - some inherited, but occasionally evolved on our own soil. One of the inherited ones takes place in the little country town of Boorowa, New South Wales, and a chapter of the book describes the charming ritual of rustic beauties coming out - making their debut. In Melbourne we observe upstairs and downstairs at Australia's most famous hotel, The Windor, and also at Yarralumla where the Governor-General represents an ancient English tradition. The fascinating and diverse people in this book all illustrate that the Australian population contains a rich cast of characters.

Time for another printing!.......2006-09-20
It's a crying shame this book's out of print as it's the best therapy I know for hypochondria. It should be on every hypochondriac's shelf right between the Merck Manual and Gray's Anatomy. Every time I have an attack I flip it open to laugh, calm myself and occasionally remind myself of other important symptoms or illnesses I've been neglecting.
I only wish the insect-borne illness section were longer, as I'm currently suffering from an undiagnosed case of eastern equine encephalitis and could use some tips. Perhaps a new expanded edition is in order. After all it's been nearly a quarter of a century and we now have AIDS, West Nile, Ebola, Hanta and Flesh-Eating Disease to contend with. The whole landscape of hypochondria has changed if you think about it.

Great Time ..........2007-09-12
if you're up to it. It ain't easy keeping up with with those sax cats. We have Byrd tunes like 'Billie's Bounce' and 'Blues For Alice' played at a fast challenging tempo and lesser known tasteful ditties like 'Birks Works' Dizzie Gillespie and more. Alot of the tunes remind you of Route 66. But the sound quality is fine. You get two versions of each tune. One with the head played one time through so you can work out a harmony and a headless one so it's all on you baby ! The rhythm section consists of drums, bass and piano all expertly layed down and recorded. I'd also recommend the Coltrane jam track book/CD because it's the same quality. The book gives you the head notes and basic chords in various keys; also known as leadsheets. Excellent product meeting a need for improvisers !

Customer Reviews:
Covers the latest features and options of InfoPath.......2006-04-14
Thom Robbins' PROGRAMMING MICROSOFT INFOPATH: A DEVELOPER'S GUIDE appears in its updated second edition to cover the latest InfoPath solutions in the MS Office system. It updates the former book to cover all new features and options as they work with Service Pack 1, provides updated examples and insights, and will reach practicing developers with the latest forms and options which can be customized to meet user needs.
A Clear Introduction to the Subject.......2006-03-30
This is an intermediate level book aimed a the programmer/developer who is setting up a distributed application using InfoPath. If you are an InfoPath end user, this is not the book for you. If you are just starting out as an InfoPath developer, then this is the place to start.
The book begins with a bit of history and description of the basic structure of the Microsoft .NET framework, Service Oriented Architecture, and its integration into Microsoft Office.
From there it goes into the InfoPath IDE and you're off and running. The book is somewhat tutorial in nature, with screen shots showing how to do things. It also has some of the characteristics of a reference book with descriptions organized by subject rather than going through in a straight tutorial format.
This is the second edition of this book and it covers all of the changes and updates included in Service Pack 1. There is a CD with the book that includes all of the source code, figures, and projects from the book. The writing is clear and to the point. This is a good introduction to the subject.
Infopath for Developers.......2005-04-14
This book really doesn't teach you much of anything - it tells you about things, it describes concepts - but there is very little step-by-step information. If you are looking for tutorial type materials, this isn't it. If you are looking for books to supplement tutorial type materials, this is very likely your book.
The Best Book on InfoPath for the Developer.......2005-03-26
InfoPath is a new component of Microsoft Office that serves to implement Microsoft's vision of how Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Outlook, Internet Information Server, VisualStudio.NET, Windows, SQL Server all tie together in the basic .NET environment to make an integrated business environment for the sharing of data within an organization.
Mr. Robbins is a Senior Technology Specialist with Microsoft. He appears to be an evangelist for the .NET, Web Services, XML and certainly the InfoPath approach. In this book he presents a complete introduction to InfoPath from describing what it is supposed to do, to using it's IDE to produce some intergrated solutions.
The book is said to be of beginner to intermediate level. This means beginner only so far as InfoPath is concerned. The book presumes you have a good understanding of especially Office 2003, the .NET Framework, and Visual Studio.NET 2003. You also need some knowledge of the other packages listed at the beginning. Finally, this is a book designed for the applications developer, not the end user. Consequently some programming experience may not be an absolute requirement, but a little .ASP, SQL, HTML knowledge wouldn't hurt.
This is the hands down best book on InfoPath for the developer that's been published so far.
Great place to get started.......2004-06-12
"Programming Microsoft InfoPath" is a great place to start.
The book covers how to get started and how InfoPath fits into the software developer's toolbox, from Form design thru security, and integration with SharePoint/BizTalk.
With this book and a little practice, I was able to start creating practical "Smart Client" applications on the first day.

Book Description
This is the best and longest-selling book on close combat in history. Reprinted and in current use by the U.S. Marine Corps as an official training manual, it details methods of self-defense, offensive close combat, combat shooting and crowd-control techniques in riot situations. Colonel Rex Applegate is widely regarded as the father of modern close combat and combat shooting, and this book is considered the standard by which all other books on the subject are judged.
Customer Reviews:
god help you if you think you need this book.......2007-09-24
as another has said, this is NOT a self defense manual. This was written in early WW2 as a guide to combat troops, on how to kill. As a young 15 year old, tired of being bullied and beaten in high school by thugs, i bought and read this book.
but after learning how to break a sitting man's neck without yourself breaking stride, or how to silence a sentry by a commando knife thrust to his kidneys, while simultaneously smothering his outcry, i was not really better prepared to defend myself at basketball games in tough neighborhoods, since i did not really want to kill my teenaged opponents.
the lessons of this book have no place in civilized society, and anyone who feels a need for this book in peacetime is to be pitied, and may even need psychiatric help. this is a book with a very accurate title, it is on learning to kill, a very serious business.
i am surprized it is still in print, and had not thought of it for 50 years or so, until watching ken burns WW2 movie tonight.
Dated but encyclopedic.......2007-09-10
I have the comprehensive hardback edition & use it mainly as a reference & always find tips you don't usually get elsewhere (ex. using the crook of the elbow to steady a pistol, how best to peer around cover & concealment - different but too many use them interchaneably - among others). If you can get past the 1950's photos, you can find useful tidbits. The late Col. Applegate was a pioneer who blazed a trail few had bothered to document before. Styers's "Cold Steel" is in the same vein.
must reading for small women.......2007-08-16
if you read this and practice, you will never feel like a small helpless woman again, even tho this book was written, apparently for large men doing dangerous hand to hand combat. I consider it a must for urban survival.
Good only if you are a police officer.......2007-08-03
Classic, must read book basically because it is a milestone in hand to hand combat manuals.
BUT: of the 400+ pages, only the first 50 or so actually speak about unarmed combat, the rest is all about guns, shooting tecs, knife fighting, riot controlling (the book was written when that was a major conflict scenario), immobilizing a prisoner, handcuffing a prisoner etc etc etc....
That is, if you are not a law enformcement agent, completely useless, as in a street fight you don't want to handcuff your opponent, you want to beak him the nose and leave !
To learn the few basic tecs to strike the opponent, the book is quite accurate and detailed, even more than W.E.Fairbarns "Get tough" , plus the photos are clearer (although black and white).
I would say, a must for your combat library, but for training/skill developing, look elsewhere and use other books (I strongly recommend the 2 "Solo training" series)
the best of its kind .......2007-08-01
this book by the late great oss pioneer col.rex applegate is the best book ever written on hand to hand combat.
my very very tough hard as nails grandpa was actually!!!trained in these vicious ruthless methods as a 6th battalion ranger in the pacific fighting the japs...and was a decorated war hero by general douglas macarthur!!in world war 2!!!
much of it was gleaned from the awesome capt.william ewart fairbairn of the british commandos (see get tough!!and his other great books)... rex applegates teacher.
this book has stood the test of time and (its techniques)helped the allies win the war!!
i would ALSO mix in some basic western wrestling skills and some basic western boxing with this world war 2 HTHC teaching and i think anyone would with some solid hard training be "a very dangerous antagonist at close quarters"...as the late great col.said...if you want to learn....BUY THIS BOOK...

Kill or Get Killed by Col. Rex Applegate has always been considered one of the most influential books on close-quarters combat ever published. But most readers are familiar only with the revised 1976 edition, with the distinctive red cover. Few have had the opportunity to study the extremely rare 1943 edition, written as America and its Allies were fighting desperately across Europe and in the Pacific. Now, serious students of the evolution of modern battlefield skills have access to this combat classic. The original flap copy best captures the conception, spirit and intent of the book.

Science in the form of a series of "What if ..?" dialogs.......2003-12-17
Some of the most interesting things that you can do are to take an unusual, unlikely or impossible event, assume that it has happened and then logically follow through to the consequences. That is the content of this book and it is done with a combination of adherence to the laws of nature and humor. The events can be divided into two general categories: those that presuppose the alteration of a law of nature and those that might be possible within the current laws.
For example, "What if men had babies?" is true for some species and probably would not require the violation of a physical or biological law. Certainly, it would require a redefinition of the word "man", but that is really not so difficult. An example of a change in a physical law is "What if Planck's constant were much larger?" The consequences of a change in a physical law are much more difficult to ponder, because we as yet do not know all of the interrelationships between the laws of nature. Nevertheless, the author handles them all with a good deal of humor, never straying farther from the current state of knowledge than is necessary.
This is a very good general science book. Where necessary, the author explains some of the difficulties in assuming the precondition, and then describes the consequences in a relaxed, easy to follow style. Even if you have a phobia concerning science, you cannot help learning a great deal if you read this book.
An excellent, thought-provoking book........1998-12-15
I saw this book lying on the table at a friend's house and picked it up, which turned out to be a mistake, because I just kept reading it throughout my stay there. It kept me turning pages, wanting to find out more about the world. It is written in such a way that the average person can follow the concepts, and the dialogue between the two characters adds humor and allows for more questions to be asked. I highly reccomend this book for anyone mildly interested in learning more about the world they live in.
