            Book Description

This book is an analysis of the economic effects of the ICT revolution, and answers a few key questions: Did the ICT revolution contribute to the recent divergence in the growth record? And if this is the case, how and why were some countries better equipped to exploit the potential of ICT? It
assembles the work of two teams of leading economists, focusing on the role that the ICT revolution has played in advanced countries, and assessing whether or not the digital economy will indeed result in a more competitive and more equal world.

This CD "disappeared" from a yoga studio. In my search to replace it, I sampled several other Om chants. Everyone preferred this version at the studio I attended.

The Upanishads are called shruti, revelations. Mandukya Upanishad, though the shortest of all Upanishads, is a revered, profound Upnaishad that teaches us about four states of consciousness: the waking, dreaming and sleeping states and Turiya, the fourth state, beyond the first three. In this Upanishad, there is a unique combination of psychology and profound philosophy, a clear exposition of the four states of consciousness.

                            Book Description

This is both a remarkable journey through sacred India, and a pilgrimage to the immortal self. After a transformative journey to the lands of his ancestors- Ireland, and Holland- the author embarks on what would become a life-altering visit to the spiritual centers of Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism. With his ever inexorable determination to pursue his highest path, Jack Haas visits many holy areas within the subcontinent of India, and communes with numerous masters who have passed from this plane, but who remain in the subtle realm to assist mankind in its growth to freedom and eternity. These include Krishna, Guru Nanak, Ramana Maharishi, Christ, and Shiva himself. Within the pages of this book Haas describes his own evolution towards an expanded, unlimited consciousness as well as his unique relationships with many aspects of the divine feminine, including Mother Mary, Sophia, Parvati, Gauri, Kali, Saraswati, Durga, and Gaia. Haas' path eventually leads him to the absolute union of spirit and flesh, and to the inextinguishable Tao running through all of life.

By examining the cultural spaces occupied by youth--spaces represented in texts produced for youth, about youth, and in some cases by youth--contributors to this volume present challenging ways of applying critical ideas and theoretical frameworks to the crucial issues that surround youth and the cultures they inhabit as evidenced in their literature, magazines, computer games, films, television programs, popular music, and fashion. Many of the writers in this unique new collection write from provocative standpoints drawing on film and feminist theory, psychoanalytic criticism, semiotics, and literary theory, providing useful ways of thinking about the issues, texts, and practices that circulate within youth cultures, indicating their underlying tensions and contradictions. Providing a cross-cultural analysis of these texts, Youth Cultures provides scope for a wide readership open to unorthodox readings and bold interpretations.

The plot for this book really is split into two sections straight down the middle, but they are at least somewhat interrelated. The action is fairly tame, but does involve some grisly concepts, though they are not horribly explicit. Most of the character portayals are believable, if not perfect. The book is heavily focused on Captain Bridger, and the author seems to have a preoccupation with middle names, which got a bit old. I did enjoy reading it, and will probably read it again sometime. It's definately a book for 'seaQuest DSV' fans, and would probably not greatly interest the average sci-fi fan, as the characters are not as developed as they should be for a stand-alone novel. Some knowledge of the show is rather necessary to fully appreciate this book. I admit to enjoying this book, but my one major frustration was that the name of one of the crew is completely wrong: Lt. jg. Tim O'Neill is called Lt. Bachmann for NO concievable reason. It's clearly the same character, though; his mannerisms and speech patterns are very recognizable. It drove me crazy enough that I finally went through the book with White-out and a pen and fixed it. Other than that, it was a decent way to spend four hours.

                                5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2002-05-28

this book was excellent. Although like most novels it starts out slowly, the action quickly starts and carries you through the rest of the book. It inspired me to write a fanfic based on the storyline. A must-read for seaQuest fans.

1 out of 5 stars Way too confusing!.......2000-06-18

I had to read this book because I love Seaquest. But beware, this may be one of the worst books ever. It actually is two small stories that have nothing in common, combined into one. This author needs some writing lessons; the entire novel is written in about 3 paragraph segments, jumping between anywhere from 3 to 5 sets of characters throughout the story. Only read this if you need a Seaquest fix and are truly desperate!

Just failed the exam due to this book. As per other reviews the book does not cover Application Inteligence or Smart Defense which have been added to the new Checkpoint CCSA exam. The other topics are covered very well but despite scoring over 80% on the other topics my 8% I scraped on Smart Defense was not enough to get me a pass. If they bring out a book that covers the 156-210.4 exam I would highly recommend it (unless Checkpoint have brought out feature pack 5!!).

I just wasted $150 on the exam. The test contains many questions about Application Intelligence and SmartDefense. Two topics that not covered in this book. I should have read these reviews before buying.

3 out of 5 stars Some good info.......2003-09-09

I've been working with Checkpoint Firewall-1 for 5 years now, so I picked up this book as a review when I was told to get my CCSA and CCSE by my employer. I have not taken the exam yet, so I don't know how well it prepares one for the exam, but I do know that I consider my knowledge of FW-1 to be deeper than most, yet I still learned some new tricks from this book.

That was the high point. I thought the information was arranged in a confusing manner and that the questions at the end of the chapter were very poorly worded and caused a lot of confusion. Also, get used to the phrase "it's important to understand". It is used in practically every paragraph. After awhile, it began to bug me. Is this sentance important to understand, while the rest of the reading isn't? If I pay $40 for a book, it better all be important for me to understand. It's a stupid cliche, and it's redundancy got very tedious.

Buyer beware. This book, published January 2003, does not cover Application Intelligence or SmartDefense, two subjects included on the new Checkpoint 156-210 exam as of July 2003.

The book is good but is only for the 156-210 exam which you can not do anymore. The new CCSA exam is 156-210.4 which you will probably fail if you use this book. I just lost £100 because of this. The Checkpoint web site is not very good at explaining the difference in the new exam and Sybex do not know about 156-210.4 yet.

Where can I get a study quide for 156-210.4 ?

                                Book Description

War Made Easy cuts through the dense web of spin to probe and scrutinize the key "perception management" techniques that have played huge roles in the promotion of American wars in recent decades. This guide to disinformation analyzes American military adventures past and present to reveal striking similarities in the efforts of various administrations to justify, and retain, public support for war. War Made Easy is essential reading. It documents a long series of deliberate misdeeds at the highest levels of power and lays out important guidelines to help readers distinguish a propaganda campaign from actual news reporting. With War Made Easy, every reader can become a savvy media critic and, perhaps, help the nation avoid costly and unnecessary wars.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, compelling criticism of American media.......2007-10-09

This book inspired me to change my political affiliation from Democrat to Green. Not a big deal for the world but it took Soloman's deeply introspective and inspiring account of his 1960's activism to awaken in me my youthful idealism enough to take this action. It is the most inspiring political book I have read since "Greening of America," and that goes back a long way. Soloman intersperses his profound criticism of the corporate-industrial-war complex with compelling vignettes of real life incidents drawn from his long and rich life of activism. Highly recommended reading.

5 out of 5 stars Why have so many presidents lied to the people?.......2007-09-22

Norman Solomon is demonstrating that since World War II the US have systematically used war to defend their own interest and nothing else. So democracy and freedom is a lure for the public to fall into the trap of supporting the wars the President and a small group of people decide. He then demonstrates that all these wars are based on a fundamental and founding lie. Vietnam was based on the lie about the attack of some US battleship by the North Vietnamese in the Gulf of Tonkin just as much as the war on Iraq is based on the lie about the Weapons of Mass Destruction. Then he demonstrates how the press is literally forced into supporting the war though apparently very few are willing not to support it and the vast majority of media people are willing to support these adventures or ventures. But he also demonstrates that only two senators voted against the Gulf of Tonkin resolution in 1964 and only one congresswoman from California voted against the war on Iraq. He demonstrated how civilian casualties are increasingly the only casualties that count as for numbers. From 10% during the first world war they have risen to at least 90% in the war on Iraq. The present count of civilian casualties in Iraq are beyond one million. Then I will quote Senator Morse who voted in 1964 against the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution: "Since when do we have to back our President or should we when the President is proposing an unconstitutional action?" That is clear enough. Democracy does not mean to support the President but to take part in the devising of the US foreign policy itself on the basis of all facts provided to people for them to make up their minds. I will then conclude with Norman Solomon: "When it comes to life and death the truth comes back too late." And in the case of Iraq the truth about the weapons of mass destruction is definitely too late since these WMDs justified a war that had thus no justification since they were a willful lie. And this war led to the most obnoxious and inhumane or even inhuman acts on the side of American GIs, like torturing and killing the victims of their own rapes.

5 out of 5 stars American propoganda arm.......2007-01-06

There is a lot of talk about media bias these days but not so much about media complicity as the president's propoganda arm. Mr. Solomon identifies the tricks of Madison avenue so often used in the "news" media as willing victims of manipulation in war fever. It is an important topic for all citizens to learn the tricks that presidents have used for centuries to bring the American people to their cause.

Mr. Solomon hits the nail on the head with examples from the Lyndon Johnson administration and all the way through to the current George Bush administration. Indeed, the author seems to imply at times that this is a phenomena new with the late 20th century presidency when it is, in fact, an age-old technique of presidents to at least the time of the John Adams administration. It is also unfortunate that the author does not spend some time analyzing the reasons the media has been so complacent in its role. But, acknowledging it's complacence is a first step.

The media complacence is a sad fact. But the complacence of citizens who continue to have faith in a system that has proven itself untrustworthy (the media and the government) is equally sad. We continue to believe that our government is, at its core, entirely altruistic - incompetent, perhaps but seldom do we want to believe it has alterior motives. We believe the lie that some secrets must be kept from us and that those secrets are safe with them. We continue to believe that those they support are necessary evils while those they decry (often the same people) are the very reincarnation of Hitler. The same techniques are used over and over and we buy it everytime.

The indictment, in the end, is not really the media or the presidents - it is us. We have grown lazy and prefer to believe the lies rather than demand the truth. Truth requires effort in the finding. Mr. Solomon has done well to remind us that vigilance is the price of liberty.

5 out of 5 stars Good Reading but Think for Yourself.......2006-06-26

This book has a bunch of strong points and weak points.

Strong Point - Mr. Solomon starts with an attack on President Johnson's handling of several military situations including of course Viet Nam. So many of the current books seem to be nothing but a vicious attack on President Bush. At least this one doesn't seem to be so partisan, he attacks both parties.

Strong Point - When you look at other countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland, these countries haven't felt it necessary to go to war in hundreds of years. It makes you ask just why is the US so war like?

Weak Point - Mr. Solomon repeats the 'Bush Lied' mantra so loved by the lefties regarding WMDs. Every intelligence agency in the world believed that Iraq had WMDs. Bush may have been wrong, but being wrong is quite different than lying. And certain WMDs have been showing up, a binary nerve gas artillery shell was recently used in one of the insurgent attacks. Since it wasn't fired out of a cannon it didn't work properly, but the fact that it existed and that it had such sophisticated safety devices indicate a serious R&D effort on Iraq's part.

Weak Point - On the last chapter on withdrawal from Iraq he definitely leaves the impression we should withdraw. If we do, and Syria comes in to help the Sunni's, Iran comes in to help the Shia, the war between them grows to cover the entire Middle East, oil flow stops, gasoline goes to $10, then $20, then $40 a gallon then we will at least know one person to blame.

Good Reading but think for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars We Fall for it Over and Over!.......2005-12-27

Solomon reports how presidents take us to war, time after time, following the same old scripts:

1)America is a fair and noble superpower.

2)Our leaders will do everything they can to avoid war. (Except review facts objectively.)

3)Our leaders would never tell us outright lies. (Except about the Gulf of Tonkin, WMD, communists in the Dominican Republic and Grenada)

                                4)This guy is a modern-day Hitler.

5)This is about human rights. (Or, We have to protect American citizens in the area.)

6)This is not at all about oil or corporate profits. (Except for Niger, Iraq)

7)They are the aggressors, not us.

8)Opposing the war means siding with the enemy.

9)This is a necessary battle in the war on terrorism. (Or, We fight them there now, or here later. Remember the "Domino Theory" applied to SouthEast Asia?)

10)The U.S. fights wars as humanely as possible. (Our bombs never hit civilians or hospitals.)

                                11)Withdrawal would cripple U.S. credibility.

12)Our soldiers are heroes, theirs are inhuman. (Satan is on their side.)

Unfortunately, the press has unwittingly become complicit by not challenging these basic premises - instead, it limits itself to quibbling over specific times, tactics.

5 out of 5 stars More Than You Expect.......2006-09-14

I read Dr. Holmes' "Spores, Plagues and History" after having finished his two novels, "The Medusa Strain" and "Garden of Evil." Coming to "Spores" from two fiction pieces, I expected an informative, but probably academic treatment of the subject. To my surprise, I found the book to be highly readable and captivating. It held my interest more than I had expected.

Dr. Holmes launches us into the subject and makes it relevant to today by looking at the anthrax breakouts in the US after 9/11. From this starting point, he traces the history of anthrax from early Greek times to the present, but takes in much more than just the medical side. He leads us through areas of military history, sociology, biological research and bio-weaponry. Most riveting are the disclosures of activities related to chemical and biological warfare in the 20th century - including activities undertaken by elements of the US government.

I rate this book as riveting as the top-tier offerings of the science-based fiction writers of today. It should appeal most to readers with wide-ranging interests.

5 out of 5 stars A straightforward accounting of this devastating disease.......2004-01-17

Medical epidemiologist Chris Holmes, M.D. presents Spores, Plagues, And History: The Story Of Anthrax, a straightforward accounting of this devastating disease and its effects on humanity throughout history. From "woolsorter's disease" during the Industrial Revolution, to modern-day biological weapons, and so much more, Holmes' extensively researched sources aptly traces a path in clear, no-nonsense terms that students of both World History and Medical History will greatly appreciate. A work of impeccable scholarship, Spores, Plagues, And History is very strongly recommended for academic library reference collections.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book About Anthrax History - Moses Forward..........2003-11-04

This great book about the history of anthrax covers a lot of ground in relatively few pages. The more I learn about the author, the more I realize this man knows what he is talking about. I feel calmer about anthrax after reading this book.

The author is a native of Canada, Chris Holmes, and he received his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine and served in the Air Force during Vietnam. After stints in private practice and academia, he became a Navy physician and has studied extensively nuclear, biological and chemical warfare. He led the medical team aboard the USS Tripoli during the 1992 U.S. intervention in Somalia.

Captain Holmes, MC, USN (Ret.) has been studying the history of medicine for over 35 years. He is the author of two books dealing with Anthrax. He is a physician, epidemiologist, an authority on disease and bio-warfare past and present, and is arguably the world's leading authority on the history of anthrax. Dr. Holmes has taught at medical schools, has published many scholarly articles, and is certified in submarine and diving medicine with the U.S. Navy, just to survey some of his extraordinary experience.

His Op-Ed's have appeared in newspapers from San Diego to Tennessee, and he has been interviewed on radio talk-shows from San Francisco to Boston. Dr. Holmes has also appeared on Fox News with Mr. John Gibson, being interviewed about monkeypox and infectious diseases and on XETV in San Diego, being interviewed on Fox in the Morning about anthrax and bioterrorism.

ANTHRAX! SMALLPOX! PLAGUE! Until recently, most Americans were unfamiliar with these terms or assumed they were a part of history. The October, 2001 anthrax cases catapulted this condition into the headlines and the minds of many. What are the agents and the illnesses they cause? How worried should we be and what can we do to protect ourselves? With new infectious diseases emerging and old ones resurfacing, the challenge of early detection, containment and prevention is urgent.

Dr. Chris Holmes has written a provocative, engrossing book that offers the general reader the answers to these questions. 'Spores, Plagues and History' follows the trail of anthrax from prebiblical times to the present. The reader gains an appreciation for the challenge early investigators faced in responding to clusters of illness when the cause was not known. 'Spores, Plagues and History' also provides a highly readable, authoritative perspective of the role other infectious agents have played in world history.

                                          Book Description

Here is the perfect introduction to vascular and physiology for students, vascular and radiology technologists, sonographers, nurses, and others who seek a clear and simple presentation of the facts they must know to pass their certification examinations and to discharge their daily clinical responsibilities. There is a wealth of information on standard anatomic terminology, micro anatomy, gross anatomy, the cardiopulmonary and systemic circulations, and arterial and venous hemodynamics. All of it is presented with the clarity, simplicity, and practicality that are the hallmarks of Ms. Belanger's style. Clinical implications are always emphasized: How, where, and why do you palpate a pulse? What exactly is an anteroposterior view? A midsagittal section? What does one do with a transducer in order to move it medially or cephalad? How does Poiseuille's law help us understand blood flow data? What happens when the carotid sinus is massaged? Why? Coverage of these and a multitude of other topics includes terminology, micro anatomy and physiology of the blood vessels, gross anatomy and physiology of the cardiopulmonary and peripheral circulations, characteristics of arterial blood flow, energy concepts, arterial pressure and flow, mechanisms of control, venous pressure and flow, and the venous valves and leg muscles. This large-format manual contains reviews at the end of each chapter, self-assessment quizzes at the end of the book, a bibliography, and a detailed index.
