    Book Description

About two hundred and forty years ago, an English clergyman named Thomas Bayes developed a method to calculate the chances of uncertain events in the light of accumulating evidence. Though his method has extensive applications to the work of economists, it is only recent advances in computing that have made it possible to exploit its full power. In this new and expanding area, Tony Lancaster 's text provides a comprehensive introduction to the Bayesian way of doing applied economics. Using clear explanations and practical illustrations and problems, the text presents innovative, computer-intensive ways for applied economists to use the Bayesian method. In addition, each chapter includes numerical and graphical examples and demonstrates their solutions using the S programming language and Bugs software.

    4 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2007-04-12

I'm taking an intro to Bayesian stats class and we are using the Carlin & Louis book -- it is a POS.

I found this book in the library and it is much better. It gives very clear explanations of the ideas, and lots of concrete worked examples. Props to the author.

5 out of 5 stars Clear as crystal and plenty of workouts.......2006-07-25

This is as clear as crystal. It also has plenty of workouts. It is a very useful volume.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-03-19

If you are looking for a book for Bayesian estimation, this is the one. The first several chapters say it all about Bayesian methods. The rest of the book is applications. Very helpful reading for learning the method.

      Book Description

"As so many readers of his little book on Econometrics have long known, Peter Kennedy has a special talent for presenting difficult concepts in ways that are clear and intuitively pleasing, while stressing rather than minimizing what is most important about the concepts. His new book on macroeconomic concepts and data that are widely reported in the media does the same thing, and provides a lot of nice examples, applications, and problems to boot. I'm sure it will find several grateful audiences." -- Mike Watts, Professor of Economics, Purdue University

What do we want our students to be able to do upon completing an introductory course in macroeconomics--shift curves on diagrams or interpret media commentary on the economy? This book, an effort to lead students in the latter direction, offers a clear exposition of introductory macroeconomic theory along with more than 500 one- or two-sentence "news clips" that serve as illustrations and exercises. The author calls this approach "media economics" to distinguish it from the encyclopedic character of traditional texts. Although the book can be used as a macroeconomics principles text, it has been designed primarily for use as a supplement. It provides a guide to what the author calls the "really important" ideas of macroeconomics, with a strong connection to the real world. Thus many instructors will find the book suitable for use in courses enrolling business students. The method of presentation allows room for topics that are crucial for the interpretation of news commentary, but given inadequate coverage in traditional macroeconomics texts. Examples include the many roles of nominal versus real interest rates, and international phenomena such as purchasing power parity. Despite its nontechnical presentation, the material in the book is quite challenging for students; to answer questions based on the news clips, students must truly understand the economic concepts and apply problem-solving skills rather than rote learning. This text, unlike existing economic texts, provides the student with a practical yet sophisticated grasp of the macroeconomic principles necessary to interpret media commentary. 150 pieces of classic literature distilled to limericks, letters, and in one case, a children's story (N.J. Warburton on Great Expectations: "Here is Pip. Here is Pip's big sister. Pip's big sister is married to Joe the blacksmith. See Pip's big sister frown...", etc). Parrott (the book's editor) solicited the entries from 30+ authors, requiring only that they be succinct and "entertaining as well as enlightening". A warning: despite the book's title, these parodies are more fun if you've actually read the works described. A great gift for an English major with a sense of humor!

          Book Description

This massive book offers a comprehensive study of the Gypsy jazz or Manouche guitar style as perceived by French guitarists Derek Sebastian and Romane, two of the finest modern day practitioners of the Django Reinhardt style.

Each of the book's thirty-six progressive chapters consists of four parts: A.) Technique developed through exercises, chord progressions/diagrams, and illustrations of fingerboard positions; B.) A harmony lesson with leads in the Manouche style; C.) Soloing techniques based on the harmonic structure of a given theme; and D.) Self-testing materials with answers provided at the close of the book.

The companion CD for L'Espirit Manouche is unique in that it provides 98 play-along MIDI files that exactly parallel the order of the exercises, examples and pieces in the book as well as audio tracks of excerpts from eighteen Romane favorites from the Gypsy jazz repertoire. The MIDI tracks, which can be accessed via most audio players on PC or Macintosh computers, allow the student to play along with both short phrases and extensive rhythm tracks- at any desired tempo; The audio tracks on the companion disc can be played on any CD player.

L'Espirit Manouche not only makes Gypsy jazz accessible; it offers an opportunity to master the Manouche style. While many exercises and tunes appear in both standard notation and tab, not to mention chord or fretboard diagrams, standard notation is predominant.

Being a Django Reinhardt's music aficionado and guitar player for years, this is the most comprehensive and coherent book on that style of music I have known. Pieces of music of high complexity are divided into small parts to allow the access and learning step by step and always intoducing the theoretical content in a practical way.
I do not know of any other instructional book that teach more and give the solid foundation this book offers.the next step is logically, to follow with Reinhardt's songbooks.

5 out of 5 stars This is the only guitar book you need ! .......2006-03-13

In its foreword, the authors wrote "we sincerely believe we have created a major paedagogical and cultural work". After owning the book for a couple of week, I can sincerely say that this is a true statement. The autors introduce you not only in a detailed, meticulous fashion into the world of gypsy (jazz) guitar, but they provide from all jazz guitar methods I have so far seen the most understandable introduction into jazz music and its application to guitar. Granted, the typical jazz guitar book has the concept of introducing you to about 247 x 16 different scale and harmony patterns, with no prospect to learn anything playable within the first 15 years. Mostly, you are tortured with far to complex chord and harmony arrangements, and in the gypsy jazz literature, the typical procedure is apparently to start playing with Django standards, which leads you to nowhere, unless you are an extremely talented player, or have been adopted by Reinhardt family members somewhere in Alsace. This book, for example, starts with a four chord song (Swing for Ninive), and you are teached an arpeggiated solo over an Am/Bb6/E7 chord change. Harmonics are explained in detail and in a very clear and concise way. The fact, that Romane uses, with a few exceptions, his own songs in the book allows him to arrange the lecture patterns for a particular effective learning curve. I see this as a plus, not as a deficit. The material, although, is far from easy. Mastering the first song at 65% speed requires already a significant level of guitar proficiency. If you devote, say, two to three years of your life to this book, you will, however, achieve something. The wonderful situation is that it is all there , mapped out, nothing to guess, no enigmatic embellishment, you just have to pick up your guitar and study it. All the material is covered by original cuts from Romane albums on the CD which comes with the book, and in addition, all practice exercises are on the midi file. The comment of my fellow author (with the one star review) about the midi files is completely off, since the midi files are a a valuable tool to learn the beat and the phrasing of the exercises at any speed. If you don't like them, you can also slow down the original tracks by, e.g., using the windows media player and selecting a lower speed. The only thing which the book lacks, in my opinion, as a practice tool, would be an additional recording with only the rythm tracks of the songs, so that you can play along. Sure, as the authors recommend, you can record them by yourself and then play along. This is also likely part of the practice, but its more fun to play to a nicely laid out ryhtm track. Also, don't expect to much about rhthm playing itself (the "chompe"). I you are looking for that, you would need to search elsewhere. Apparently, Romane wrote also a treatise about that, but I did never had a chance to look into this. All in all, a true masterpiece.

I just received my copy last week, and I can't put it down. L'Esprit Manouche has been translated into English from French so occasionally the grammar sounds a bit silly, but what this book offers is invaluable, from the very basic rhythms to the most complex harmonies. And there's even tests you can take to keep you honest! A very nice edition every Gypsy Jazz guitarist should own.

This massive (330+ pages) book has been out for a while, but only in French. This English translation is superb; the entire gypsy jazz manouche style is broken down by Romane, a french non-gypsy who was taught at a young age by Manouche guitarists. The vast majority of the compositions that are taught in the book are Romane's own compositions, but he seems to use his tunes as a vehicle for teaching theory and tecnique. Even in translation, Romane comes of as a natural teacher of the jazz manouche style. I would recommend this book to any serious musician . Most of the music is in tab and standard notation, but some stuff is only standard notation.
Note: I am an amateur musican, and not really that great at all at jazz manouche. But this book still kicks butt.

            Book Description

Why is culture a problem that can never be solved? Charles W. Nuckolls poses this question to his readers, and offers a genuinely synthetic approach to culture that is both cognitive and psychoanalytic. He develops a theory of cultural dialectics based on the concept of paradox, in which he shows how ambivalence and conflicts, and the desire to resolve them, are at the heart of all cultural knowledge systems. Nuckolls combines and synthesizes the ideas of Max Weber and Sigmund Freudmajor influences in the cognitive and psychoanalytic paradigmsand develops the concept basic to both: the dialectic. He recovers the legacy of Gregory Bateson, who provided the foundation for a theory of paradox in culture. With his integrated theory, Nuckolls explains the conflicts of knowledge and desire in a South Asian knowledge system, in particular the religious mythology and divinatory system of the Jalaris, a Telugu-speaking fishing caste on the southeastern coast of India. This provocative book allows us to rethink the relationship between the currently competing discourses in psychological and cultural anthropology, and at the same time offers a general synthetic theory of cultural dynamics.

My father was one of the sources quoted in the book and I have heard many stories similar to those outlined. I also worked part time (volunteer work) at the station in later years and see strong similarities. It's a solid working man's view of how things got done early in the formative years. I recommend it for those aspiring television journalists/producers/engineers who need humbled after being exposed to today's technological advances

5 out of 5 stars Great in-depth info for a very under documented topic.......2006-08-14

Jason & Stacy have done a great job digging into the details of site definitions. You rarely find this level of depth in available resources, including in the WSS/SPS SDK or MSDN. Wish I had this a long time ago!

5 out of 5 stars Best Book so far on the topic..........2006-04-25

While there are other books that have been published in the past year on the topic of SharePoint and customizations and what not, I would have to say that this book brings all the pieces together, gives the explanations to UI developers, administrators and developers that they need.

5 out of 5 stars A Serious Book on SharePoint.......2006-04-24

Even though it is not a big book in pages, it is an excellent book in content! The core of the book focuses on creating site definitions; with many excellent examples and useful tips. Other topics covered include template construction, definitions for Lists and customization of themes and alerts.

There is other information on SharePoint which address these issues, but this is the only book wherein the information is centralized and readily accessible to the reader. None compare in clarity and ease of reading, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Real examples for Advanced Developers.......2006-04-20

I enjoyed reading this book and easily flew through it over a few sessions during a week. It was easy to follow, has in-depth examples, excellent documentation and inside tips about the sharepoint application configuration. Best of all the Authors were able to not only walk the reader through the examples, but also they were careful to point out the places that a person could easily expand on their work while covering the pro's and con's of the approach. It was a good read.

5 out of 5 stars SharePoint 2003 For Advance Users.......2006-04-17

I agree with the previous reviewer that the title of the book might be missleading but content, ease of use for this books is what the rating should be based off of and it is excellent!

I think the title "Advanced Concepts" could be clarified with for "Advance Users/Administrators", etc... as it probably the only book you need to quickly learn how to customize SharePoint. If it's used by Advance Users/Administrators... then it can be implied that it's Advanced Concepts. Any case, i'm not a editor.

The book takes you through the most relevant and practical examples of the information you need and not baby you with hundreds of pages of basic stuff that most people that's familiar with MS technology already knows.

You can read this book from cover to cover in about 3 hours and you'll feel empowered and knolwedge enough to get advance customization done with sharepoint. I highly recommend this book for experienced administers/MS programmers to get a concise view to the topics of Site customization and doesn't want to read extra fluff like in other books.

No French army officer had ever spoken out in such detail. Many in the goverment, including Francois Mitterrand the future president of France knew and approved of tortured and summary executions in Alegia. This book is particulary relevant to the current national debate on terrorism.

Amazon actually recommended this to me from previous purchases and as I had no idea what happened in Algeria it was good reading easy to follow a good number of photo's showing some of the main players, a feel of the city. The book gives one soldiers story on his shadow war in two cities and how he came about ending the terrorism - it is brutal.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read... With a Few Grains of Salt.......2006-10-12

This is a fascinating but brutal account of a desperate period in history: France's effort to preserve its overseas "departement" from takeover by the main Algerian revolutionary organization, the ultra-violent FLN. The author, then a captain, was the secret counter-insurgency commander in the then-regional capital, Algiers. Essentially, he met terrorism with terror, and justifies his brutal absolutism with grim historical facts that are excluded from Pontecorvo's historically-inaccurate propaganda film, "The Battle of Algiers." Although France was ultimately to lose the war, Aussaresses (as confirmed even by his opponents) won the battle!

It puzzles me that so many reviewers refer to Aussaresses as cold-blooded and unfeeling. The book owes its many stylistic faults to the passion and obvious defensiveness of a very emotional man. This gives the brutal story moments of unintentional humour, as in the bizarre anecdote of the Franco-Algerian farmer, his head "split in half" by a radicalized Moslem, who goes home to bed to die, first relating his experience to the local police chief!!!

The claim has been made that Aussaresses' methods had a major political impact on the war's outcome, but I doubt it. As in America's war in Vietnam, France's war was chiefly fought by draftees in the countryside, and it was the growing bodycount amoung the children of native Frenchmen, fighting for the privileges of a colonial population that was not ethnically French, that lost the war politically. Likewise the issue for the local native population was the cruel reality both of second-class citizenship and of FLN terrorism, as anyone whose political stance was not in accord with theirs was murdered, often with unspeakable brutality. Anyone examining this book in terms of other counter-insurgency operations, like America in Iraq, must bear these facts in mind. The appropriate context in which to weigh Aussaresses' account is the thorny question of whether order is more important than law or vice versa!

As this book focusses almost exclusively on Aussaresses' experiences in and around Algiers it needs to be read with more comprehensive works on the Franco-Algerian war such as Alastair Horne's "A Savage War of Peace." As other reviewers have pointed out, however, it makes for an excellent counterpoint to the rose-colored romanticizations of Pontecorvo, and I strongly recommend it. Aussaresses must be applauded for speaking with a frankness that has eluded his opponents.

5 out of 5 stars The Prince of Darkness MACV & TLC.......2006-05-27

A great bit of history revealed. The truth that's told is more important then the writing. It is a engaging journal from someone who was there and who did what needed to be done. This book should be read by every senior US and British commander in Iraq and then they should kick the prying and crying press out of the country for six months while they do what needs to be done to secure peace. If we don't do what needs to be done we will lose the world war against the terrorists. Ironically it is the French who have been the most brutal of modern western powers in the past 100 years yet they critized the US & Britain in their daring attempt to liberate a people from a murdering dictator. Read and learn my friends, read and learn.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for students of counterinsurgency. .......2006-03-21

I believe many of those who wrote reviews of this book are writing from their hearts as opposed to cooly assessing this excellent work. Afterall, it is hard for one to embrace the author's premise that physical torture and summary executions were the only way to effectively deal with Algerian insurgents.

Although one may not want to accept this methodology, many influential members in French military and political circles accepted this as the price to pay to keep Algeria French. Because these senior leaders were able to get men like Paul Aussaresses to do their dirty work for them does not make their hands any cleaner. Aussaresses obviously could not have done what he did for so long without the approval of his chain of command.

I commend the author for having the moral courage to admit his own actions when everyone else involved has taken the different approach of sweeping it under the rug. Admitting to crimes against humanity is nothing to be proud of, but Aussaresses was certainly the implementer of French political will just as Adolf Eichmann was for Germany.

This is an important work for understanding to what extent nations will go to, to secure their empires. It is also important for understanding counterinsurgency and the limits of violence. Whatever your political/moral take on the author, this is an interesting, unique book and well worth the time spent reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Nice to Hear the Other Side.......2005-06-02

It is true this book is limited in scope, but it does give you an idea of what the French were up against in their war against the terrorist FLN. You learn about some FLN atrocities that are so appalling that even old scratch himself (initials G.P.) didn't put them in the pro-terrorist film THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS. You also learn about some plans the French military had to deal with certain benefactors of the bomb-planters, plans that were regrettably not carried out.

Aussaresses was a hero. He helped crush the rebellion. It's unfortunate that he no longer was in charge when its evil head resurfaced.

This book is excellent. It is exactly what it says it is, a cultural atlas (map of culture). The book gives an refreshing survey of Iberian history. The book covers the Phonicians, Greeks thru the death of Franco. The book abounds with topographic and cultural maps. A must buy!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Should be entitled "A Brief Encyclopedia of Iberian Culture".......1998-12-13

Unfortunately the authors have no idea what the word ATLAS means (this seems to be the case with most recent so-called atlases that I have seen). Although there are a few maps, anyone who was hoping for an extensive series of interesting and detailed maps will be sorely disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on cultural and political history of Iberia.......1996-12-14

This book offers an interesting, non-textbook style cultural and socio-political history of Spain and Portugal, well illustrated by plenty of excellent photographs. The special sections on cultural, architectural features and the great artists of the countries, like "paella", "The Great Mosque of Cordoba" and "Dali" are excellent. Another good thing about this book is that you can start reading from anywhere because the sections are self-contained. Unfortunately, not enough is mentioned about Portugal, at least not to the proportion it deserves. It is good book for those planning to visit the countries as well as those who have been there and just want to sppreciate more the history and culture of the Iberia.

                        Book Description

Robots, androids, and bionic people pervade popular culture, from classics like Frankenstein and R.U.R. to modern tales such as The Six Million Dollar Man, The Terminator, and A.I. Our fascination is obvious - and the technology is quickly moving from books and films to real life.

In a lab at MIT, scientists and technicians have created an artificial being named COG. To watch COG interact with the environment - to recognize that this machine has actual body language - is to experience a hair-raising, gut-level reaction. Because just as we connect to artificial people in fiction, the merest hint of human-like action or appearance invariably engages us.

Digital People examines the ways in which technology is inexorably driving us to a new and different level of humanity. As scientists draw on nanotechnology, molecular biology, artificial intelligence, and materials science, they are learning how to create beings that move, think, and look like people. Others are routinely using sophisticated surgical techniques to implant computer chips and drug-dispensing devices into our bodies, designing fully functional man-made body parts, and linking human brains with computers to make people healthier, smarter, and stronger.

In short, we are going beyond what was once only science fiction to create bionic people with fully integrated artificial components - and it will not be long before we reach the ultimate goal of constructing a completely synthetic human-like being.

It seems quintessentially human to look beyond our natural limitations. Science has long been the lens through which we squint to discern our future. Although we are rightfully fearful about manipulating the boundaries between animate and inanimate, the benefits are too great to ignore. This thoughtful and provocative book shows us just where technology is taking us, in directions both wonderful and terrible, to ponder what it means to be human.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Analysis of the Rise of Bionic Humans.......2004-11-15

The quest for immortality has been a persistent theme in human history. From the mythology of ancient Greece through the ages to the present we have sought limitless life. Stories of vampires, for instance, are in part predicated on the quest for eternal life. So is the story of Frankenstein. But Sidney Perkowitz, professor of physics at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, demonstrates in this important new book written for a general audience that the quest has taken the form of androids, robots, and cyborgs for millennia. For example, Talos of Greek myth was a bronze automaton created by Hephaestus. More recently, fiction has given us robots, cyborgs, and replicants that all demonstrated this quest for immortality. For the first time modern science has created the possibility that the bionic human might be possible in the twenty-first century.

After an introduction that suggests that androids are all around us, Perkowitz divides his study into two parts--"Artificial Beings: Meaning and History" and "How Far Along are We?"--and proceeds to discuss the evolution of the quest for eternal life and the possibilities that exist at the present. In the process he argues that humans have always been bionic from the point that they picked up the first stick and used it as a club to the ultimate merging of humans and machines in cyborgian symbiosis. We see this all the time with artificial body parts made for amputees or hip or knee or other replacements. We also see it with pacemakers and diabetic pumps and hearing aids and eyeglasses.

Perkowitz believes that this is just the beginning of the merging of human and machines and finds the possibilities for the future truly exciting. He does envision serious moral and ethical concerns that require concentrated and long-term consideration. He does not, however, envision any way of stopping this inexorable movement toward ever-greater symbiosis between living beings and technology.

The quest for a bionic person is well underway in laboratories around the world and Perkowitz takes us on a tour of some of the most inventive people and places, ranging from Rodney Brooks and Cynthia Breazeal at MIT to the Honda Corporation lab to the ROBODEX 2003 exposition where the latest ideas on robotics found expression. There is, in Perkowitz's thinking, a critical mass driving humanity toward a new and different level of life and consciousness. Science is exploiting fast developing knowledge of materials, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and molecular biology to move toward the creation of ever more complex machines that look and act like people. At the same time scientists are incorporating into humans more and more technology to enhance the quality and longevity of life.

As written on the dust jacket of "Digital People": "In short, we are going beyond what was once the stuff of books and films to create genuine bionic people with fully integrated artificial components--and it will not be long before we reach the ultimate goal of constructing a completely synthetic human-like being." Perkowitz asks, will this step lead to reinterpretations of the meaning of life and debase the human spirit? As text on the dustjacket indicates: "Certainly this God-like ability brings us face-to-face with a host of troubling spiritual, ethical, and legal dilemmas."

This is a stimulating book, one that educates and provokes and questions all at the same time. I highly recommend it.
