    Book Description

The ultimate handbook for LTC insurance presents practical, third party information in clear, easy-to-understand language - then personalizes the information by explaining how to customize benefits for those shopping for a policy or how to evaluate an existing policy. This 167 page reference guide contains a special section with information on justification of inflation coverage and an explanation of virtually every policy feature on the market today that is not available in any other publication. The 1999 edition features new sections on The Cost of Waiting and Savings vs. LTC Insurance. The Long-Term Care Planning Guide continues to receive national exposure because the information is so current ... Health Care Reform, recent policy developments, Medicaid eligibility and the increasing efforts surrounding transfer of assets legislation, Medicare Supplement and the current year's Medicare program information.

Additional sections cover the importance of LTC insurance as a company benefit, plus a special section on the LTC Partnership Programs available in several states and a chapter on alternatives to the standalone LTC policy such as accelerated death benefits, reverse mortgages as well as the increasingly popular single premium life insurance/long-term care policies and LTC annuities.

In only moments after receiving your copy and looking through this in-depth and thoughtfully written volume of information, you will see why people refer to the Long-Term Care Planning Guide as the consumer resource for long-term care financing.

        Book Description

This book details the results of the authors' research using laboratory animals to investigate individual choice theory in economics: consumer-demand and labor-supply behavior and choice under uncertainty. The use of laboratory animals provides the opportunity to conduct controlled experiments involving precise and demanding tests of economic theory with rewards and punishments of real consequence. Economic models are compared to psychological and biological choice models along with the results of experiments testing between these competing explanations.

1 out of 5 stars I Gained All My Weight Back.......2005-05-27

The book tasted good, that's for sure, but then I think that might have been because it was one of those yellowish old books, and of course they're more nutritious, because they're already partly digested.

But I was really surprised by some of the weight loss methods, especially the part where I had to tow a tractor with an ox plow... and I couldn't get anyone to take the other side of it, so it was unbalanced and really heavy...

But that plus eating the book and I LOST 62 POUNDS!

But then, I only weighed 130 when I started.

The ER doctor pointed out that I must have left my right leg with the tractor, and that's when I passed out.

Anyhow, great book, at least for eating.

I only read 12 pages before I started eating it. Is the rest of it good?

5 out of 5 stars This Book Amazed Me!.......2002-06-08

I found this book in a used book store - of course, the title caught my eye - and found great, original humor. I recommend this book primarily to close friends and family that deserve to discover this gem; but, the author, Colin McEnroe, really deserves nationwide attention for this great book. Buy this one if you have an sharp, offbeat sense of humor; you'll cherish its comical strength. I agree with the other reviewer - where is Colin McEnroe?

5 out of 5 stars The funniest book I ever read..........2000-05-04

I'm not kidding. This book makes me laugh so hard. My copy is beat up now from years of reading, so I keep it safe and only look at it every year or so. Definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars McEnroe, Where Are You?.......2000-02-12

Not that too many people are ever likely to read this review at this point, but this book, which is now totally dated (topically) and which I've read probably 20 times, STILL kills me. Why this guy never put another book out is beyond me; I've been waiting for years. WAY, WAY funnier than Dave Barry or Steve Martin's Pure Drivel.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the funniest book ever! Similar to Dave Barry........1998-02-09

This book is written in a style similar to Dave Barry, but funnier. Colin's use of descriptions of incidents exceeds my ability to put it into words.

        Book Description

During the 1970s disco was the sound track to the lives of millions. Its hedonism, drive, and sweet, catchy melodies made dancers worldwide experience the bliss of complete abandon. This book traces its entire history, from the underground dives of New York to the glittering clubs of Rome. Along the way, the book provides instruction on how to do the hustle and the bus stop; explains the gay subculture central to disco; explores disco fashions, movies, clubs, and drugs; and tells the fascinating stories behind not only the American hits but the Eurodisco masterpieces, the soft-porn divas, and the mysterious producers behind the shimmering sound.

All other reviews aside, what I appreciate most about the book are the photographs by Joel Brodsky, appropriately chosen for this project, as he is known for creating the photos for hundreds of album covers....

5 out of 5 stars Almost the fully story.......2007-01-19

A brilliant well researched, and entertaining account of disco - ok I have seen some of the other reviews bemoaning about some of the exclusions, however dont let that put you off. I guess the 'whole story' still needs to be written but this is a first class valiant attempt. And puts the whole era (which I was to young to appreciate) into perspective. It deserves an extra star just for the chapter on Amanda Lear, finally getting the recognition she is due.
Definately recommended for all disco lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Giving Disco Its Due.......2001-01-24

As a child of the '70s who was not disco shy back in the day, I thought I knew disco ... that is until I read an earlier edition of this book. The wonderful world of Eurodisco is at SNF's core, a world that remained quite underground in the U.S.A. Thus, this ain't the Bee Gees, folks (nor Disco Duck), and cover chanteuse Donna Summer is only a starting point.

If, like me, you thrill at the thought of discovering obscure musical delights, making new musical connections and exploring a secret scene that -- 30 years on -- has barely been uncovered, this book will rev your engines.

It also works overtime to dispel those pesky rumors that disco sucked; that it put musicians out of work; that it was homogenous, mindless, faceless; and that it is dead. The authors also do an admirable job of connecting disco genres to their various geographic and demographic sources, as well as connecting the music and movement to larger themes such as art, fashion, theory, lifestyle and even interior design.

The book is very particular to its authors and their biases (or, at least, personal histories), but that makes it a lively and thought-provoking read. Couple this book with the wonderful Last Night a Deejay Saved My Life, and you have a crash course in the secret music of the night!

1 out of 5 stars I wasted my money again!.......2000-10-04

I purchased the first edition of this book and was very unhappy after reading it and seeing just how much history was left out. The authors did not go into much detail regarding the disco disc jockey's, disco television shows, nor disco radio.

When I heard through discomusic.com that a revised version of this book was out I was thrilled. I thought maybe they cleaned it up and made history right. WRONG AGAIN! They just rehashed the first edition and added a few more photos...and some more wasted words on songs.

No mention of IDRC (International Disco Record Centre and Eddie Rivera), no mention of Disco Step-by-Step Dance show, the first all disco television show, no mention of the New York Record Pool, no mention of Soap Factory Television, a quick blurb of Dance Fever .... slight mention of American Bandstand and Soul Train.

Oh well .... believe me I will not spend another nickel on the next revision...if there ever is one.

Don't get me wrong. This book does have a lot of information and for newbies it is fine but for someone who lived through the disco era I am very disappointed that more research did not go into it so that it would cover the entire realm.

          Book Description

The absorbing, astounding, true story of the invention of radio broadcasting in the early 20th Century, and a long-overdue tribute to the lman who actually devised practical AM receivers and the entire FM System: Edwin Howard Armstrong. His genius gave us all a wonderful new world, but his patents were stolen by corporate greed.
The story centers around three figures central to the period: Armstrong, Lee DeForest (who claimed to have invented a lot of things), and David Sarnoff (who founded R.C.A.).
Tom Lewis' bestselling book became Ken Burns' wonderful video, but David (Firesign Theatre) Ossman's audio adaptation is the best telling of the story of any version! Steve Allen, David Ogden Stiers, Edward Asner, Bonnie Bedelia, John Astin, Gary Owens, and a magnificent cast of 90!

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Turn your radio on . . ........2005-04-02

Subtitled "The Men Who Made Radio," this book is concerned with the principal actors developing radio: Marconi, Sarnoff, Armstrong, and De Forrest. Sarnoff ("The General") was the egoist who founded RCA, and Armstrong was the secretive inventor of FM who refused to compromise and lost everything (and committed suicide). The first half of the book is the best; it's all about the inventors and their new inventions and is very interesting. The second half suffers from being mostly about the legal hassling that occurred among the principals. Recommended.

          5 out of 5 stars Americana At It's Best........2004-12-28

I didn't just read this book, I've read it three times and will probably read it at least two more times, slowly. It's easily the best recounting of an industrial development that I've ever been through in any medium. The amount of detail about the invention of "radio" is almost overwhelming. The way that the lives of the major figures are professionally interwoven and spiced up with backstabbing, deceit, lying and tragedy is also keeps the reader's eyes glued to the pages. You also begin to realise why the work of honest inventors needs to be protected.

However, the authors distinction between "wireless" and "radio" is pretty thin in my opinion and his use of that to exclude Marconi from the group is a bit ungenerous and just flat-out, technically wrong. The inclusion of Sarnoff is just as wrong. Sarnoff was a classic, ruthless American entrepreneur- not an inventor. He was no doubt a great visionary but he also appropriated for himself events to which he was not connected. Sarnoff more properly belongs in a second volume with Paley and others who raised broadcasting to the level of a major industry. They gave alot to their country, but, not as inventors.

It's an all round great read and I highly recommend it. Tom Lewis did a fantastic job and I've got an opinion thanks to his incredible research. In fact, his book has caused me to do even more reading on the subject.

Finally, I think there's also an accidental, back-door warning in there about the debasement of the American economy. As radio grew, it created hard, marketable skills and spread the wealth into just about every town and household. That's not happening today in an economy that's based on endless consumption, paper debt, cheap unskilled labour, easy credit, no savings and a manufacturing heartland that is anywhere but the USA.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent History of Radio.......2004-06-03

As a radio professional myself, I very much enjoyed reading about the evolution of radio and the marvelous myriad of personalities involved. Since the beginning radio has been filled with colorful and interesting people. It reinforced in me that I picked the right profession to dedicate my life to.

I would recommend this book to any professional broadcaster. If we fail to have an appreciation of history, we fail to grasp the big picture.

5 out of 5 stars The History of Radio 1899 to 1954.......2002-01-12

This book focuses on the history of radio from 1899 to 1954 and thus has nothing to do with RCA's CED VideoDisc system, but one of the key figures in the account is David Sarnoff, so a lot of the early history of RCA is covered. In addition to Sarnoff, the book focuses on the technical radio pioneers Edwin Howard Armstrong and Lee de Forest. In some respects this book is a reflection on the development of the modern computer, as parallels can be drawn between these radio pioneers and computer industry figures Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Larry Ellison.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, Radio is Airwave Magic!.......2000-06-06

Read some years ago & book now lost. Fascinating in that it vividly displays the genius, sometimes luck, unstinting effort, inspiration, and often the "happy" accident that is part of basic effort when one breaks ground in a new quest in pursuit of a dream. Much of this history could not be repeated in our 2000 world because those opportunities no longer exist. An example is Sarnoff's success in getting meaningful work at the tender age he did in the story! Mankind's unflagging quest goes on but in different ways. The first way of making news available at the instant it occurs certainly shrunk the world. The process continues. Recommended highly for the radio buff of any age!

OFFICE 2000 8 IN 1 STEP BY STEP

            Amazon.com

Whether you're upgrading to Office 2000 or using the application suite for the first time, odds are that you'll need some help getting up to speed. Microsoft Press covers all of the bases with Microsoft Office 2000 8-in-1 Step by Step.

In trying to keep the needs of every user in mind, this book might intimidate the novice and yet go too slowly for the power user. In comprehensively touring the eight main programs in the Office package, it may be best suited to intermediate users.

Anywhere from two to five lessons on each application explain usage, including tutorials that show you how to design business cards or schedule meetings. As part of a training program, this would make for a pretty good reference book since each lesson ends with a table of quick explanations for performing the tasks you've just learned.

Microsoft Office 2000 8-in-1 Step by Step comes with a CD-ROM containing examples and multimedia walkthroughs for many of the lessons valuable to "hands-on" learners. Between the lessons, the diagrams, and the information in the book, you should be able to master Office with some patience and diligence. Of course, this is a Microsoft book, so if you're looking for bug reports or unofficial tips and tricks, you'll have to try elsewhere. But if a no-questions-asked tutorial and reference is good enough for you, there's nothing better. --Rob Lightner

4 out of 5 stars Step By Step.......2001-12-11

I ordered the book and it came propmptly. More promptly than getting Office 2000 loaded on my machine. It looks a bit more simplistic than what I was looking for but it looks like a great book for someone just getting started.

4 out of 5 stars Great initial investment pursuant to MOUS certification.......2000-12-12

My goal for 2001 is to obtain the MOUS certificate at the Master level. I have used MS products with the concentration of my experience centering on Word and Excel. I have used Access sporadically and with intermediate level performance. My experience with PowerPoint leaves much to be desired since I mainly use the wizards. My funds are limited so I wanted an all-inclusive reference (with CD Rom for practice) which would provide a basis for my study. I bought the book from another source (please forgive me oh mighty Amazon) and in terms of area concentration I would say it is intense concentration on beginning information, greater than average concentration on intermediate knowledge and average concentration on advanced applications. This is not a problem - I plan to buy books which center completely on each package as I master the foundation of each package. I would disagree with anyone who states that this is not for the advanced user, with constant upgrades and education there is no way anyone can ever retain each ounce of minutiae that can be acquired; this book is an excellent refresher. For the beginning or intermediate it is an excellent basis for further study.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Microsoft Office 2000.......2000-04-04

This book does a great job of explaining the basic concepts of all of the Microsoft Office programs. It also has good practice excerises. It does not, however, touch on any of the advanced or complicated features.

                    Book Description

What are the agents of life? Central to our conception of the biological world is the idea that it contains various kinds of individuals, including genes, organisms, and species. How we conceive of these agents of life is central to our understanding of the relationship between life and mind, the place of hierarchical thinking in the biological sciences, and pluralistic views of biological agency. Genes and the Agents of Life rethinks the place of the individual in the biological sciences, drawing parallels with the cognitive and social sciences. Genes, organisms, and species are all agents of life, but how are each of these conceptualized within genetics, developmental biology, evolutionary biology, and systematics? The book includes highly accessible discussions of genetic encoding, species and natural kinds, and pluralism above the levels of selection, drawing on work from across the biological sciences. A companion to Boundaries of the Mind, (Cambridge, 2004) where the focus is on the cognitive sciences, this volume will appeal to professionals and students in philosophy, biology, and the history of science. Robert A. Wilson is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alberta. He is the author of Cartesian Psychology and Physical Minds (Cambridge, 1995).

5 out of 5 stars An ambitious and interesting treatment of biological individuality.......2007-09-26

Robert A. Wilson provides a deep analysis of what he terms the "agents of life," those loci of biological causation running the gamut from genes to speces. R.A. Wilson takes a fresh look at essentialism with respect to biological kinds and applies recent work in biophilosophy to his views of genes, living things, organisms, and species. He grafts Richard Boyd's outline of homeostatic property cluster kinds (HPCKs) to these natural kinds. The merit of the HPCK view lies in its novel approach to essentialism shorn its negative features. An HPCK is a causally-related, usually co-instantiated "cluster" of properties; while entities will have many properties associated with their kind, no n-tuple of properties is necessary for kind membership. Thus, the arduous quest for a set of necessary and jointly sufficient conditions becomes a merit, rather than demerit, of essentialism.

R.A. Wilson's work is essential reading for those interested or even professionally concerned with biological individuality and those who continue to contend with the species-as-individual (SAI) thesis.
