The constant and seemingly intractable problem of world debt is much in the news today, and, despite the Baker plan of the 1980s and the more recent Brady plan, the plight of third-world borrowing nations and their first-world creditors continues to worsen. Developing nations are stymied by the portions of their gross domestic product that must be given over to servicing debt, and money center banks continue to write down their third-world loans, damaging their own balance sheets as well as their credibility. In this study, a follow-up to his Monetary Reform and Cooperation Theory, George Macesich addresses the world debt crisis and proposes a method for overcoming the dilemma. Macesich develops a useful framework with which to approach the world debt problem, focusing on his cooperation theory, which calls for a bilateral approach on the part of both creditor and debtor countries. There are significant obstacles to this type of cooperation, however, and these difficulties and methods for overcoming them are discussed at length. Macesich begins the volume with a survey of the world debt problem, followed by a detailed examination of the theory and strategy of cooperation. In succeeding chapters he studies the barriers to cooperation: domestic constraints in debtor nations, domestic constraints in creditor nations, economic nationalism, and the nationalism of the bureaucratic and political elite. He concludes the work with a discussion of the relationship between debt burden and world monetary stability. This study will be a valuable resource for finance and banking professionals and for monetary policymakers, as well as for courses in banking, world finance, and international monetary policy. College, university, and public libraries will also find it a useful addition to their collections.

I taught at a school were the final senior project in the Honors Physics class was the invention of a "Rube Goldberg" machine that had to accomplish a task such as making chocolate milk or putting toothpaste on a toothbrush. Goldberg's genius was to "invent" wonderful complicated mechanical solutions (totally tongue in cheek) for the real problems of American life such as a "Simple Way to Carve a Turkey" or "Putting the Cat Out at Night."

For example, here are the instructions for a "Simple Alarm Clock": The early bird (A) arrives and catches worm (B), pulling string (C) and shooting off pistol (D). Bullet (E) bursts balloon (F), dropping brick (G) on bulb (H) of atomizer (I) and shooting perfume (J) on sponge (K). As sponge gains in weight, it lowers itself and pulls string (L), raising end of board (M). Cannon ball (N) drops on nose of sleeping gentleman--String tied to cannon ball releases cork (O) of vacuum bottle (P) and ice water falls on sleeper's face to assist the cannon ball in its good work.

Now, the description alone is pretty good, but add to this Goldberg's illustration in which everything is labeled from A to O (in this case). In "The Best of Rube Golberg," Charles Keller has collected the best of his prolific output to introduce those fascinating contraptions, which made the name Rube Goldberg a household word. Granted, today's children might not recognize his name, but if they have every played "Mousetrap" then they will totally understand the guiding principle at work here. The book is tailored for young children as an introduction to Goldberg's genius. There are dozens of examples from his "Automatic Weight-Reducing Machine" from 1914 to a similar goal in "Every Woman to Have a Perfect Figure" from 1944.

That’s where the story begins. Long Bomb follows the plot twists toward the humiliating finale, introducing us to key figures along the way. As color commentator, Jesse Ventura was a piece of the puzzle that was supposed to explode the TV sports formula. Soon enough, he became an expendable scapegoat. Dick Butkus was meant to lend a measure of football credibility to the fledgling operation, but ultimately even he couldn’t see what was worth saving or dressing up.

Long Bomb also tells the story of the men who played in the XFL, which promised as much to them as it did to its viewers. Set in Las Vegas, the book follows the Outlaws, including the league’s biggest star, Rod Smart. His nickname, He Hate Me, was the one thing that worked in the XFL. But the real story behind He Hate Me has never been told.

Forrest deconstructs every aspect of this moment-in-time experiment that spoke volumes about the direction of the entire TV sports business. A combination of desperation and hubris, the XFL reflected a confused media landscape, where the cost of airing big games ran too high in a wilderness of splintered audiences and expanding entertainment choices.

The XFL was supposed to be greater, bigger, better—more, more, more. If it worked, competing networks would have fallen over each other copying the formula. If it didn’t work, man, what a train wreck.

Brett Forrest's book is a somewhat behind the scenes story of the disaster that was the XFL. He does a good job in the book of telling the story of what lead up to McMahon's idea of the XFL and the book does a fairly good job of the league and the problems that the league faced from its humble beginnings to its disastrous ending.

I would have liked to had more behind the scenes comments from more players and coaches. Obviously, the XFL was an experiment that went downhill very quickly, but it would have been an even better book if the author could have had more football players talk about the XFL experience on the road, during practices and how they viewed the XFL.

A good read and for football fans it is an interesting read on a league that came on the scene with high hopes and hobbled off the field quietly.

Good read.......2003-04-09

An interesting book that doesn't skew TOO far into McMahon bashing. In fact, McMahon is actually presented in the most realistic fashion that I've read personally. That said, it is kind of obvious that the author didn't write the book until he knew what the outcome would be, and one can't help but wonder if most of the "skew" comes out of that fact.

Whether you watched the XFL or only heard about it, this book gives us some really intriguing behind the scenes viewpoints of the mini-drama that was the league's only season. Anyone else remember the dead air in one of the early weeks? Charles Puleri? The SNL/J-Lo fiasco? Rusty vs. Jesse? "He Hate Me?" Clement vs. Grieb? All of the stories, big and small, of the XFL are covered, with additional info from an insider point of view. Good stuff.

Defense versus offense. Ya gotta love it..........2002-12-19

Let's get one thing clear up front: "Long Bomb" is not, repeat, NOT, the definitive history of the XFL. The XFL doesn't deserve a definitive history! "Long Bomb" instead is a neat little slice of gonzo journalism; an extended magazine piece showring Vince McMahon's year-long football hybrid with all the sardonic barbs it so richly merited.

What sold me on the book was author Brett Forrest's photo and author blurb, which talks about how he squandered his book advance on gambling and booze. He even looks like the kind of guy you'd expect would go undercover with minor-league quality football players for a year, just to get a book deal. There is no more perfect man to describe the XFL.

Actually, the XFL defies description. It sounded like a good concept at the time -- a stripped-down, bare-bones football league, without the attendant NFL media hype and over-management (like the gritty, muddy, audience-free football scenes in the movie version of "North Dallas Forty"). The problem is, XFL went right out and got everything wrong: it was all about the fireworks and McMahon-staged theatrics, and the players couldn't play. The league was "unscripted", but non-competitive -- all teams were owned by the league, an idea so awful that Major League Baseball went right out and copied it by purchasing the Montreal Expos. XFL couldn't lure talent away from the college campuses, so the teams were comprised of injured collegiates and retreads from the CFL or (even worse) NFL Europe. Their star attraction was a player who wore the phrase "HE HATE ME" on the back of his jersey. HE HATE ME was a running back who couldn't run. And now you know... the rest of the story.

Forrest's disdain for the entire misbegotten project pervades every page of the book. His recaps of the error-filled TV broadcasts are a hoot, and even by the final weeks of the season, when the ratings were gone and the Cheerleader Cam was shut off, he doesn't spare any bile. Forrest is more fair to the players and producers who granted him interviews or access, but even then we're allowed to see how empty HE HATES ME's home life is, or how sad it is when Las Vegas quarterback Ryan Clement retells the same tired college bowl triumph to the same disinterested crowd.

There are some hideous turns of phrase in the book: "In a season that lasted two fistfuls of games, the XFL was about to begin its second hand". A list of nasty adjectives used in the book would be longer than this review, although Forrest is neutral when it comes time to describe McMahon's near-shoving match with Bob Costas (he sneers at both sides!). He clearly admires Jesse Ventura, erstwhile XFL broadcaster and governor, but doesn't spare us Ventura's lack of ability to spin on-air phrases (see the title of this review for a great example).

Take "Long Bomb" for what it is: a bitterly funny and mercifully brief post-mortem of a spectacular TV failure. If you remember anything at all about the XFL (and I watched all of 45 seconds), this book is a great features-eye view of all the ways in which it went wrong.

A Fun Football Book and hey, ... Cheerleaders!.......2002-10-31

The XFL went under a little over a year ago, but seems like a far more distant memory. Long Bomb is Brett Forrest's take on why the league failed so dramatically-and the people who made it possible. Forrest followed the Las Vegas Outlaws for the season, and we learn about how players got ... into the league, how quickly the network head honchos lost faith after ratings dropped, and how Vince McMahon went down fighting till the end. He shines a light on how many people worked their ... off for the league, almost making you feel sorry for McMahon and his cohorts. With the XFL gone, football won't be as easy to make fun of anymore-well, at least there's still the Cincinnati Bengals. I love it, as Forrest is a very good writer who moves you along and doesn't miss a single detail.

Deserves more credit than its current rating.......2004-06-04

I found this book to be alot more useful than another review I have read on it.
The book is a good reference book showing very clearly in illustrations and instructions what you have to do to achieve the feature you wish to use in Photoshop and is very good at doing so. The book also packs every feature that Photoshop has to offer.
This book would be well suited to a person that likes to learn by taking a digital image on their PC and following the well written instructions to achieve the desired effect you want to achieve for that photo.
HOWEVER, having said this, the book is not a textbook with exercises to practice your skills and is does not inspire you to get stuck into Photoshop and enjoy indulging in creativity.
In other words, as the title suggest it is a very good "How To Use" book (i'd give it 5/5 for that), but not great at teaching you how to be creative with Photoshop

Photoshop Manual is Better.......2004-01-05

This was my 1st Photoshop book purchase and I was excited...

I thought it would be better than it was but it wasn't.
It doesn't really tell you how to use the program very well. I found myself lookinjg for more information elsewhere after every example in here cuz it didn't help me other than to show me where the tool was located.

I think the manual is MUCH MORE helpful. This book definitely made me appreciate the manual much more. I wouldn't waste your money....there are much better books out there. I'm sorry I wasted mine.

Vanilla "Osprey Modelling.......2007-08-03

Just your regular Osprey Modelling volume - something for everyone, every scale, every skill, great descriptions, brilliant techniques and great pictures. I'll only glve it 4 stars though, because the book should be (or have been) expanded, on the lines of the "Modelling the P-47"'s supplementary PDF, with an article on the not-so-brand-new 1/32 Trumpeter kit - it's sorely missed.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book as well as the backgrounds of the many different types of models available. Well written and documented.
